Post-op people
Hey Linda, wondering how you are doing? Thinking about you and hoping it wasn't too rough. DD be kind to you momma now.
|
tracey, babe, darlin. PROTEIN. not carbs for right now. that means no cream of wheat or cream of rice or tomato soup. try some blended cottage cheese. or puree the meat out of soup [don't puree the rice or pasta that comes with it - you'll have to spoon out the protein parts and leave the rest, including the broth.] nibble on some thinly sliced deli chicken or turkey or roast beef [nothing more processed than that!!!]. eat egg whites [blecch, but some people like this approach!!!!]
and i'm assuming you're using your protein shakes??? figure out what you need to do in order to prevent that lightheaded feeling. for ME, that meant 15 grams of protein every 3 hours. i had VERY GOOD LUCK mixing protein powder with about 1/2 c plain nonfat yogurt. congratulations on the 50 pounds!!!! now, we just gotta make sure you're losing it as healthfully as possible!!! take your vits. go ahead. do it!!!! |
Jiffy you know you are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't know what I would do with out you. I can't get the protein shakes passed my nose. Got my daughter to go the health food store to try some stuff there and even having trouble with that. I am not sure what to do. Maybe I'll be BALD SOON! LOL i sure hope not. When ever I eat my stomach start growling and freaking out so I have to lay down. I've been told this is normal and should get better. I hope thats right. I really don't know what I'm doing and any help from you is wonderful. Tracey |
The 2 types of protein that I use are Protidiet (liquid gel - comes in a pouch to mix w/ 8 oz. water) 1 = 15 grams & is available in many fruit flavors. Tastes pretty good. The other I really like is Nectar Lemon Tea by Syntax. 1 scoop in 16 oz water (w/ pkt of SF Lemon tea mix) = 23 grams protein. The Nectar also comes in a variety of flavors. Neither is as heavy as a shake to get down.

where can I purchase this stuff......................Help please!
|
i get my nectar at the vitamin shoppe - gnc doesn't carry it. good luck!!
|
and thanks for the compliments, tracey - how about telling us what you've tried and what's worked BETTER than the others? don't give up - this stuff is essential!!!!! after about a year with the milk-mixing proteins, i looked at them one morning and said NEVER AGAIN1!! and i'm very grateful that i found the nectar. mixes in water, goes into yogurt, it works REALLY well for me.
and one more thought - make an egg custard! use skim milk, a whole egg plus perhaps another egg white [don't have to do this]. a bit of sweetener, nutmeg, cinnamon. bake it. you can eat it warm or chilled, and it goes down SOOOO easily. with a jumbo egg and 4 oz of milk, you're at about 15 grams of protein, and that's pretty darn good. BUT DON'T MIX PROTEIN POWDER INTO THIS before you bake it. the heat will denature - break apart - the proteins, and you won't want that. but if you find something that tastes good with this, go ahead and sprinkle it on or mix it in just before you eat it. |
I live in the midwest so need to order mine online. The best price, delivery time that I have found for where I live (& they have a 10% discount for larger orders) is NashuaNutrition.com. I have also used BariatricEating.com. P.S. I don't like the powder protidiet, only the gel packets. Both of these places will sell you a sample pack of protein products to try.

Unjury is a bit expensive for me. Can I buy protein powder from Walmart?
|
hey there, being!
yes - you can buy protein powder wherever you find it. BUT REMEMBER: it should have less than 15 grams of carbs in it, and it should have about 20-25 grams of protein per serving. and you should be able to get it down! also, please remember that protein powder, vitamins, and all that stuff now becomes a medical tax deduction for you because they're now all part of post-surgical care! |
Wow, jiffy, really? I had no idea about a deduction after having surgery! An added benefit! ;)
What is the scoop on the Special K protein water mix? I bought some today to start experimenting, but it has 35mg of sodium and 5g of protein per serving. Would this count for protein? |
protein powder
Hi tracey, have to tell you a quick story, my daughter had gbs. could not keep any protein powder down, couldnt get teh smell. We tried EVERYTHING and she still didnt like it when she came up to take care of me at post.. Well, i had her make me SAE protein powder from sams, which i reasonalbe price. She loves it.... we put applesauce in it, flavors like hazelnut and come ice cubes, run it in the blend and wahlah.... a blullet blender is so handy for this and use it every day.. even before surgery i used this and drink .. must have worked because i had an easay surgery and i feel a good recover so far... If you do your protein first thing in the morning , it will keep you less hungry during the day, and give you more eneregy.... when i want a candy i take protein drink and freeze it and east like popcycle...... lots of ideas and help here.. so ask away.. carvinmom
