2 wks pre surgery
hi, In the middle of my 2 wk pre liquid diet. my doctor allows protein drink, oatmeal, chicken broth, water , tea, decaf coffee, tomatoe juice. the protein drink is Unjury.. THis is a new program they say they are having suscess with and so far its been a good one to follow for me.. Of course i practiced before hand about a month !! I have been wandering about the carbs in the protein drinks that ive looked at, dont you have to worry about sugar??? Also eating so little is causing my tongue to be white, and hard to swallow.. probably all the meds i take... Bet i need more water!!! im concerned about the idea of all the protein drinks having sugar in them... does that little amout count.. or am i being to strict.... |
If your tongue is white and sore it sounds like thrush. It is a yeast infection that you get in your mouth. I had it on and off for about 4 months after my surgery. I would talk to your doctor about it they can give a prescription to deal with the yeast and it helps a little with the discomfort of it.

Unjury
Carvinmom, I've heard from several of my friends that the Unjury is good stuff. Most say it is tasteless. Seems like you are doing very well. Gosh, if your surgery is on Oct. 2nd, it is coming fast! YEAH! I tried the Micellar Milk this weekend and kind of liked it. Tasted good in my SF Chai Tea recipe.
|
yeah, carvin - go to the doc about your tongue.
as for the 'sugar' in the protein drinks - there are a couple of points. AS A RULE OF THUMB, less than 15 grams of carbs per serving is generally OK. very few people dump on 15 grams or less [notice i said VERY FEW PEOPLE - i'm sure there are a few out there!!!] the other important point is that you need to consider a serving of protein to be about 20 grams [a little more is better than a little less - but you get the idea]. and you'll have to tweak that in order to meet your own particular needs. at the beginning, i had to have 15 grams of protein every 3 hours in order to keep moving! others do fine with a little less, and others need a little more. you're doing great - and i'm so impressed! things have moved extremely fast for you, and you're soooo on track!!!! |
thanks girls, to my resue again.... have a few problems going on, insurance is bulkking a bit, not sure why ... and only one week to go!!
i will ask doc tomorrow about white tongue and know it isnt thrush , had it before but thanks for mentioniing it ophelia... THe unjury protein drink is working out okay.. i do put my sugarless syprups in for more flavor when i make my smoothies etc. The Muscle milk is too sweet but added it to my sugar free pudding which i discovered i could have it also on my pre surgery... thank god im not having trouble staying with this pre stuff so far!!.. Of course my dentures are ground down some i noticed!! Glad to know about the 15 grams Jiff.... i was being real strict of trying for no grams!! that was making really hard to find anything legal...Lots of emotional things going on around me but have to keep focused on MEEEEEEEEE first this time!!!!! Not easy with hubby mad at me for doing this surgery and son moving in after seperation from wife.. etc etc... Nothing is gonna stop me with this chance of a new and less fat way of life... thank you all for your support.. i look for it everyday...... stay safe..... bye |
Wow! You are determined! I'm so happy for you. That's the mentality you're going to need. It's for you! I'm sorry home life is so stressful, but you're off to a beautiful start.
Good luck! |
thanks Jaxs,,, can i call you that!!!!
anyhow the support means so much to me... when theres none at home. my daughter is driving up to help next week, oct 2 is the DAY...Passed all my pre today and lost 25 pounds for the big day, so that i could be in better shape.. i want to give it the best chance i can.. im a tough farm wife , i can do this. I look forward to doing things i havent been able to do.. like tie a shoe, get out of a chair, walk a few steps without pain, breath some fresh air without coughing for more............ have no idea why im so determined and just a month ago i was scared to death. I think its because of all the years ive wasted being fat, all the remarks and looks... i dont have anymore tiime to make excuses... life sure went by fast !! im on disability and retired now... So a word of wisdom to you youngins.. dont wait to long like i did , no matter if you do surgery or not, start early with healthy eating habits, please.. sorry that sounds like a sermon...... six days to go.... |
Hi all
I am having the RNY surgery tomorrow. I am Canadain but going to the States for the surgery. I'm very scared. Please tell me this is a good thing and it will be worth it. |
geeezzzz tracey - you're nervous, aren't you??? where in the States are you going? who's handling the followup? remember a few points here [and i hope i don't overload you!]
1. do what you doctor tells you 2. the first three months will be hard - but you'll be OK. 3. make sure to get your protein and water in. no excuses!!!! 4. take it day by day - don't look too far ahead. things WILL get better 5. you now get to re-learn everything you ever knew or thought about food and your relationship with it. that's the hardest part. it'll take time and trial-and-error. be patient with yourself 6. take your vitamins 7. stick around here - it's a good place to be soooo, having said ALL THAT - keep us posted, and good luck to you!!!!!! |
WOW!!!!!! Jiffy pop your doing GREAT!!!! I can only hope to do as well as you.

Hi Carvinmin
today will be my first full day home. yesterdays 3 hour car ride home was brudal. i felt every little bump in the road. they had some problems getting me on paid medication that didn't upset my stomach, ive got that under control now. the only other thing is my breathing. my oxygen level is in the 60's and its supposed to be in the 80s or 90s so im going to be on oxygen for about a month. other than that everything was pretty much as i expected. i wish you the best of luck on your surgery tomorrow, i cant wait to hear from you, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Tracey |

Hi guys,
Well went back to the USA yesterday to see the doc. Got my drain out and it feels alot better. He wants me to stay on oxygen for another week or so. he said it will help with the Healing! I'm still light headed at times. He weighed me and I'm down 50 pounds now. Now I can start to try alittle more food, but it scares me. I don't want to get sick. Any suggestions on breakfast, I tried cream of wheat yesterday and hated it. It might be good with brown sugar but pretty gross with none. Go back to the doc in 3 weeks. The ride there and back took alot out of me. I hope today a better day. Take care all. Tracey |
Post-op people
Hey Linda, wondering how you are doing? Thinking about you and hoping it wasn't too rough. DD be kind to you momma now.
|
tracey, babe, darlin. PROTEIN. not carbs for right now. that means no cream of wheat or cream of rice or tomato soup. try some blended cottage cheese. or puree the meat out of soup [don't puree the rice or pasta that comes with it - you'll have to spoon out the protein parts and leave the rest, including the broth.] nibble on some thinly sliced deli chicken or turkey or roast beef [nothing more processed than that!!!]. eat egg whites [blecch, but some people like this approach!!!!]
and i'm assuming you're using your protein shakes??? figure out what you need to do in order to prevent that lightheaded feeling. for ME, that meant 15 grams of protein every 3 hours. i had VERY GOOD LUCK mixing protein powder with about 1/2 c plain nonfat yogurt. congratulations on the 50 pounds!!!! now, we just gotta make sure you're losing it as healthfully as possible!!! take your vits. go ahead. do it!!!! |
Jiffy you know you are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't know what I would do with out you. I can't get the protein shakes passed my nose. Got my daughter to go the health food store to try some stuff there and even having trouble with that. I am not sure what to do. Maybe I'll be BALD SOON! LOL i sure hope not. When ever I eat my stomach start growling and freaking out so I have to lay down. I've been told this is normal and should get better. I hope thats right. I really don't know what I'm doing and any help from you is wonderful. Tracey |
The 2 types of protein that I use are Protidiet (liquid gel - comes in a pouch to mix w/ 8 oz. water) 1 = 15 grams & is available in many fruit flavors. Tastes pretty good. The other I really like is Nectar Lemon Tea by Syntax. 1 scoop in 16 oz water (w/ pkt of SF Lemon tea mix) = 23 grams protein. The Nectar also comes in a variety of flavors. Neither is as heavy as a shake to get down.
|
where can I purchase this stuff......................Help please!
|
i get my nectar at the vitamin shoppe - gnc doesn't carry it. good luck!!
|
and thanks for the compliments, tracey - how about telling us what you've tried and what's worked BETTER than the others? don't give up - this stuff is essential!!!!! after about a year with the milk-mixing proteins, i looked at them one morning and said NEVER AGAIN1!! and i'm very grateful that i found the nectar. mixes in water, goes into yogurt, it works REALLY well for me.
and one more thought - make an egg custard! use skim milk, a whole egg plus perhaps another egg white [don't have to do this]. a bit of sweetener, nutmeg, cinnamon. bake it. you can eat it warm or chilled, and it goes down SOOOO easily. with a jumbo egg and 4 oz of milk, you're at about 15 grams of protein, and that's pretty darn good. BUT DON'T MIX PROTEIN POWDER INTO THIS before you bake it. the heat will denature - break apart - the proteins, and you won't want that. but if you find something that tastes good with this, go ahead and sprinkle it on or mix it in just before you eat it. |
I live in the midwest so need to order mine online. The best price, delivery time that I have found for where I live (& they have a 10% discount for larger orders) is NashuaNutrition.com. I have also used BariatricEating.com. P.S. I don't like the powder protidiet, only the gel packets. Both of these places will sell you a sample pack of protein products to try.
|
LOODIE, YOU LOOK great!!!!! i CAN'T WAIT TO GET THE POINT WHERE YOU ARE NOW. GOOD JOB!
|
well done loodie
Boy have you been working hard and it shows!! congratulations and glad to see you here... ive been here a little bit and am home from my first week of surgery... everything mostly is going good. just takes getting use to.. thanks for the websites and info on nectar drinks.... going to go check them out now... linda
carvinmom |
YAY!!!!!! you're back!!!! how'd it go???? tell us EVERYTHING!!!!!
|
Unjury is a bit expensive for me. Can I buy protein powder from Walmart?
|
hey there, being!
yes - you can buy protein powder wherever you find it. BUT REMEMBER: it should have less than 15 grams of carbs in it, and it should have about 20-25 grams of protein per serving. and you should be able to get it down! also, please remember that protein powder, vitamins, and all that stuff now becomes a medical tax deduction for you because they're now all part of post-surgical care! |
Wow, jiffy, really? I had no idea about a deduction after having surgery! An added benefit! ;)
What is the scoop on the Special K protein water mix? I bought some today to start experimenting, but it has 35mg of sodium and 5g of protein per serving. Would this count for protein? |
protein powder
Hi tracey, have to tell you a quick story, my daughter had gbs. could not keep any protein powder down, couldnt get teh smell. We tried EVERYTHING and she still didnt like it when she came up to take care of me at post.. Well, i had her make me SAE protein powder from sams, which i reasonalbe price. She loves it.... we put applesauce in it, flavors like hazelnut and come ice cubes, run it in the blend and wahlah.... a blullet blender is so handy for this and use it every day.. even before surgery i used this and drink .. must have worked because i had an easay surgery and i feel a good recover so far... If you do your protein first thing in the morning , it will keep you less hungry during the day, and give you more eneregy.... when i want a candy i take protein drink and freeze it and east like popcycle...... lots of ideas and help here.. so ask away.. carvinmom
|
that special K protein water seems like SUCH a rip-off to me. all that $$$ for 5 grams of protein??? doesn't seem worth it. but more important than the sodium, check out the carbs - i have no idea if there are any, but if there are, it's not worth it. too little protein.
|
Wow tax deductable. Sounds good to me. Now if I can only include my pet bills in there too. Lol :-)
|
Carvinmom...Sure sounds like your doing GREAT! I'm so happy your back. I got the word today, that I no longer need to be on oxygen. Which is great news. Today was the first time I went out by myself. I went to the drug store, doc appointment, shopping and paid a few bills. It feels good to be back on track and not counting on others for help. I'm now down 59 or 60 pounds and it feels great. Now i just have to get rid of these bad cold I pick up from my lovely son. Thanks to you guys for all the help. Please keep me posted on how your doing. Tracey
