Unhappy Breakfast Proved Evil

This morning I had breakfast. I have not done this in years. It proved evil for me as I am hungrey this evening even though I have had 1700 cals already and still wanting to eat!

I have not done a work out today but I am thinking I should now. Treadmil time? This is day two of baby steps, I was not getting into working out yet, mostly dealing with food and water and emotions. My love leaves in two days (military) and I was going to start working out then.

8:30pm is it wise for me to even try a work out?

Help! Beating myself up!

Blessings,
Kontessa

I've felt like this before... sometimes I just went ahead and exercised; other times I had a cup of green tea and went to bed.

What did you eat today? Especially your breakfast? When was the last time you ate... I mean how many hours ago?

I think breakfast may make you hungry -- if so, it may be doing its job! That is, getting your metabolism going. But sometimes our hunger is also affected by the kind of food we eat. Food with protein and fiber keep you fuller.

If you want to think about eating healthy and really helping breakfast work for you, you might want to rethink your food choices and incorporate more foods that will help keep you full. Well over half of your calories are somewhat "empty" (dressing ,candy, pizza, and cookie) and do not have a lot of nutritional value.

exercising at 8:30 may not be a bad idea if you feel like doing it... If you have a treadmill at home, you can do it for like 10 minutes.

Breakfast is very very important and the most important meal of the day! (infact starving for a long period through the night makes you hypoglycemic and when you overeat at lunch, ur insulin shoots up like crazy making you eat more and more throughout the day!)

You should have your breakfast before 10 hours fasting. (if you had dinner at say 9:00 pm, eat breakfast at 7 am). have atleast 150-200 calories.

I feel sorry to hear that your bf/hubby has to leave soon but dont get depressed and try to keep your and his mood good and tell him that when he gets back he will get a sweet surprise!

Smile Ideas to help

Hi Kontessa! MY DH was military for 15+ years & spent much of it away. I have been where you are. I did work out at night, often because I slept badly unless I was really tired. Exercising at night also helps relieve built up stress from the day. OTOH, bubble baths, a great book & soothing music are fantastic at night too. Anything, as long as I didn't/don't eat.

I agree that eating breakfast makes a huge, positive difference in my overall eating patterns for the day. If I skip b'fast it's much harder in the long run to stay on plan for the day. Currently, my favorite b'fast is peanut butter on an apple & TONS of coffee. Fiber, protein & a delicious apple. Ready in seconds, portable if I'm on my way out the door.

Best wishes for you & DH. Let me know if I can help in any way.

I totally agree with wyllen. It's not really too bad for total number of calories, it is the way the calories were consumed. Protein will fill you up longer. Much of what you ate and drank was loaded with carbs and will make you hungrier , IMHO. I eat breakfast everyday and it consists of protein and whole grains with little fat. Such as an omelet, or Oats, or scrambled eggs with whole wheat LC toast and a small amount of butter. This keeps me full for at least 4-5 hrs. I use fruits as snacks. I usually do have a salad for lunch that has chicken , or eggs in it for the protein. My dinner is almost always Grilled chicken, fish, or beef with green salad and green veggie. I know we all eat differently on here. I am just trying to give you some ideas of how to stay full for a longer period of time. Good luck to you. I know you must be very stressed with your DH leaving to the military. My son left (Army) last Friday and I am stressed because I haven't heard from him and don't know when I will. Hang in there. Be kind to yourself. This is a learning process for each of us and it takes a while to learn what works best for each of us individually. No two people are the same. Best of luck on a successful weight loss journey.

I knew those choices where not wonderful at all but I was so busy and when I did sit down to eat I had so little energy I just grab what was available. I am sending my hubby out for some more food now at the super market.

I was trying to stay away from bread and cereal today and focus on the water.

Food ideas would be great at this point. I am not sure I have enough experience with healthy eating.

Blessings,
Kontessa

i'm new but some of the things im liking so far is chili with beans, its good fiber and protein and you can make a big pot and eat it thru the week. for snacks besides any raw or steamed veggies, i like bananas good potassium, string cheese, laughing cow cheese, and yogurt. all are quick and all you gotta do is buy them. and also look at the super food list, most of them take no prep etc. and if im really desperate i eat half a protein bar for something sweet. hope maybe that helps. I'm really sorry about your hubby, you'll be fine and i thank God for people like him for what he does. You can do it and then he'll come home to hotty wife

You don't have to stay away from bread and cereal - just make it wholemeal/wholegrain bread or even dark rye bread and wholegrain cereals with no added sugars etc.

A good breakfast for me (that will hold me from 6:30am to 11am) is untoasted muesli (I buy the ingredients seperate and make it myself
- steel cut rolled oats
- bran
- mixed dried fruits including date, apriocot, pineapple, sultanas, pawpaw etc
- coconut flakes) with no-fat yoghurt.

A snack at 11am is then usually a small (about 15-20) unsalted mixed nuts (Brazil, almonds, cashews, walnuts etc) or as I had today 4 Ryvita biscuits (Rye crispbread) with vegemite spread

At 12:30 is my lunch - Today's example was homemade soup (Barley & mixed vegetable - very thick and very filling)

Snack again at about 3:30 - usually a piece of fruit, in this case an apple.

Dinner is usually a salad (Mixed bean & beets is a fave) or tonight I think will be fish with veges

As a general rule of thumb try for unprocessed foods, whole foods, natural foods - things like beans, lentils, grains such as barley, plenty of fruits and vege. Cut back on white foods like white bread, and pastries. Go for low-fat dairy (milk, yoghurt) try things like soy and tofu...eat fish...etc etc

I feel ya on that stress...I was a military wife for years. I know one of the things I wanted to do was wallow in the food. There are ways of giving in and not giving up. And you don't have to knock yourself out working out 24/7 either.

Food choices make a big difference. Did you know that sugar can give just as much of a rush as caffine? It may have some bearing on your nerves especially at night. Your blood sugar will spike on sugar and carbs and the drop you flat so you really won't want to do much of anything. Your mood may even be much lower, not a good thing to deal with when DH is leaving.

It looks like you had a smoothie this morning, frankly, especially with the blueberries, the healthiest thing you had all day. Keep that, find other things to add during the day. I also noticed that you use Flax oil, another GREAT thing. Try making your own dressings out of that. I love mine with some garlic, onion and cayenne powder with lemon juice. You would never know it's good for you.

It is no joke that you can actually eat more, and more frequently without adding any more calories. As was mentioned before, we all eat differently, but changing the things I ate and how often was a Godsend for me and my nerves, i'm never hungry!

I just found a great new forum on here the other day under "Diet Central". It's called the "Whole Foods Lifestyle". Obviously, not for everyone, but just check it out, you might find some great ideas to incorporate one at a time. A lot of people on here have a "Fitday" link on their profile, check those out too, especially the maintainers. Lots of ideas.

BTW, bless you, your husband and your family for your contributions!

kontessa --

WELCOME, btw!!! I hope you didn't think I was trying to criticize you! As Lily said very well, this is a learning process, and I was trying to make some suggestions. I think along the way making "better" choices has gotten easier with practice and planning and time to think about what choices I want to make.
.
First, I think focusing on one thing at a time and taking "baby steps" is a great idea. Most of us can't fix everything at once (I couldn't!). So don't worrying about doing it all at once!

Healthy eating can mean different things to different people depending on your goals. I recommend taking a look around the forum and seeing what people say...

What plan are you following (if any)?

Default Feeling Better

Free of Hubby around and our 8 month old as they went to the store. I was feeling some up and down emotions. With hubby here I am kind of cold as I do not want to feel anything happy because I fear that I will miss him more some how in a few days. I know, that sounds silly. With him not home for a little while I can feel brave, happy even about me, and then all of a sudden very sad and hopeless. I know it is just part of all this though. Nice to have some place to put it all.

Our 7 year old daugter jumped in the bath tub for a long play bath so I felt free to jump on the treadmil for the first time since moving here. I got out the MP3 player and a speaker that blasts what ever I need it to. I did 40 minutes! I only got up to 3.5 mph though and it felt hard. Durring cool down I felt I needed to stretch my back and ended up closing my eyes and lifting my arms and went flying back. OUCH! I scrapped up my knees but got right back on to finish. Then had to rush outside to see what the dogs where upset about. The puppy got off her runner and was free! Not good so I got a work out getting her back in the house (1 year old sheperd) So I still need to do some stretching. Going to wait till hubby gets home so he can help me more.

My mood is so much better now. I have some more great ideas thanks to you ladies. Thank you.

You know I have never had beans before that I can remember. My parents where standard meat and potatos people. Since I do not know how to cook much, prepackaged food is common and I am seeing now, clearly not ok.

Whole foods is going to be a challenge to what I am used to but baby steps I think will be key.

Goodness I hope my hubby will have his Hotty wife back when he gets back from Iraq. We like to do geo-caching and sadly I can not do many that have required lots of hiking. I would love to give him a challenge. LOL

I might just make my water goal today thanks to that work out! LOL

Thank you all!

No Biggie. I did not take offence at all as these where my choices and I knew what I was getting into when being honest and posting my food for the day.

I have a lot to learn or else I would not be here. I am happy to be able to chat with those like you who have more information and experience then I do.

Blessings,
Kontessa
