Measurement wise, the standard sizes for bigger sizes differ by a bigger amount than in smaller sizes. So where there might be a 2" difference in waist between a 20 and a 22 in pants, there is only a 1" difference in waist between an 8 and a 10. So it takes more of an inch loss to drop a size in the higher sizes than it does in lower sizes. Same with bust and hip measurements.

once you get to a smaller size, the difference between sizes will be lower. You'll also spend less time "in between" sizes - which is a HUGE problem I have right now, apparently I'm a women's size 19 - the 20's require a belt, and the 18's won't zip!

mandalinn, thanks for explaining this. I didn't know. It did seem like at first it took a long time to change sizes. Then, the closer I got to goal, it seemed like I changed sizes every 10 to 15 lbs.

I'm frustrated at having lost 42lbs, and only going down one size. BUT the last time I weighed 310, these were the clothes I was wearing - some size 26 tops, mostly size 24 tops, size 26 pants (that fit).
Also, when we first start losing weight, usually whatever size we are wearing don't fit well already, it fits snug! So we have to lose enough weight to get the size we are wearing to fit properly and then lose enough to go down a size.

ok... I'll admit this was me... I was in size 16... I won't admit to size 18 cause I never actually bought them.

Don't get frustrated and hang in there. I'm going through the same thing. You can look back at my posts and see that I asked the same question a few months ago when I had lost around 25 lbs. I've lost around 33 lbs now and I am just starting to go from a sz 20 to a sz 18. The discouraging thing is that my sz 20 pants still fit me fine. But like I said I am starting to get into a sz 18 as long as it is an 18W. I believe I'm more toned looking from exercise this time around in my sz 18 pants. So I still fill like I'm achieving something. I'm dying to wear a sz 16 though I know it's going to be a long time before I will be in those. When I was gaining weight I wore a sz 16 when I was around 210-220. So I still have a ways to go. Just stick with it and you'll notice your clothes start getting looser.
