ok thanks for that, I will have to work on the calories I eat and do some homework about what are good calories and what are empty ones. Thankfully I very rarely drink any kind of soda so thats not something I have to be careful about, just the coffee and tea, but I get a sore throat really easily and like the heat off those drinks to relax my throat.

I drink a TON of tea. I used to be a big afternoon snacker, so I needed something to keep myself busy in the afternoons to keep from eating. In my office I have a "wall of tea." For a sore throat, I like a lemon herbal with a teaspoon of dark honey (the darker the honey, potentially more antioxodants!)

Empty calories - anything that doesn't help your body nutritionally.

Examples:
sugary soda
Most fast foods
Packaged baked goods (look for partially hydrogenated oils in food labels - trans fat, a very bad usually man-made fat)
Alcohol
Most fried foods

Good calories - anything that has a positive effect nutritionally on your body.
Lean protein
Low fat dairy
Vegetables
Fruit
Whole grains
Healthy fat - the fat found in salmon, avocados, most vegetable oils (canola, olive), nuts (1/4 cup is a serving)

Learn to read labels. Try to avoid foods with trans fats or high fructose corn syrups. Look for hidden sugars. Make sure bread is high in fiber.

Thanks for that link I really appreciate it. I really thought I was eating more than enough to be honest so I'm glad I decided to have a moan about it today to find out what I've been doing wrong.

I wish I was 25 but I'm not I'm 31 will that make much of a difference?

I often will just have a salad sandwich at work or with a slice of ham or chicken, so it's not too hard to find what to have it's just the same thing over and over. Maybe I'll start taking a yoghurt or some fruit in to have too. It's awkward though because if customers come in I have to leave what I'm eating and go back to it when the queue dies down again so sometimes it's not possible to actually have a proper meal. By the time I get home I have to cook tea for my kids so it's pointless cooking again later on just for myself.

In the past when I've tried dieting I have always viewed one slip as a failure and just gave up, but this time when I've had a slip as soon as I finished eating whatever it was that I had then that was one little thing over with and just made up for the extra calories in the next meal. So I can understand what you mean about it not being about willpower. For me its still tempting to just grab a packet of crisps instead of cooking a meal when my kids are at their dads or something though. I'm trying to make sure I dont have the chance to do that now by not having them in the house

As far as the age thing, I just had to guess so I picked something kind of neutral. Definitely play with the calculator and input your own numbers for more accurate results (although even the best results are just estimates since an online calculator can't be exact for individuals).

Katyan - I keep going because I want to lose weight more then anything and I knew it would happen eventually. Keep trying and/or maybe talk to your doctor.

I know I get disipointed when I read how fast people on here lost weight to beging with but I can't let that bring me down because eventually I will lose it too and in the end it will all be worth it.

Good luck!

Make sure you drink plenty of water. I bought one of those big water bottles and drink it everyday. Also like everyone else keeps saying you need to eat more. Eat 6 small meals or snacks a day. You have to keep your metablolism going all day long.

Glory....just a thanks for what you put in words better than I can.The last time I started cutting back...had to keep saying over & over...it is NOT a diet. It's eating healthy & let the weight fall where it may.So far I've lost 20 pds...with 40 more to go & it's slow going...but it IS going.Every so often I find myself falling into the same ole mind set....if no loss that wk....saying"what's the use?". Even tho I do know better.....& I am proud of sticking it out. I'm so done eating junk...healthy is the way for me.
Katyan......there's a lot of good info on this board....just ask & the answers appear quickly from all the nice posters. Are you able to take a lunch? How about making something low cal ...just to have when you don't need to cook? Veggie soup, bean salad...chicken in a wrap? Good luck.

<I decided when I started back in July 2004 to never make weight loss about will power again. That had been my mindset in previous weight loss efforts and when I cheated or failed I just felt awful. Like I was a no will power loser and I might as well quit. This time, I decided it wasn't a diet, it was how I was going to eat forever. I changed how I ate to make it healthier so I could stick with it forever. It was never a matter of will power, this is just how I eat now!>

Here's a great link about why it's important not to drastically reduce calories:

http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspart...metabolism.htm

(of course, I'm sure the internet has an equal number of links saying it's completely fine to drastically reduce calories)

thats a great link, it really makes sense to eat plenty huh?

I went shopping today and made sure I looked out the whole grain stuff.
Is wholegrain bread the same as wholemeal or is that something completely different again? I have to say I got the wholemeal one instead of the wholegrain one beause it was buy one get one free on the one I got.

Another good link!

http://www.cspinet.org/nah/wwheat.html

It's whole grain if the front label says: rye (crispbread crackers), whole grain, or whole wheat.

It's mostly reflned grain if the front label says: cracked wheat, made with whole grain, made with whole wheat, multi-grain, oat bran, oatmeal, pumpernickel, rye (breads), seven-bran, 12-bran, etc., seven-grain, nine-grain, etc., stoned wheat, wheat, wheatberry, whole bran
