I started back in January, so it has taken about 9 months for me to lose 34 lbs. Not quite a pound a week. But I also strength-train, so I am basically losing fat and retaining muscle (I have only lost like 5 lbs. of lean body mass since I started, so most of my loss is pure fat). I don't really care how much longer it takes me to lose the rest; I look a lot better now than I did before, and I feel much better both physically and emotionally/mentally.

My memory is a little hazy so this is very approximate I lost 85 lbs over the course of about year when I first started losing weight. I maintained at 180 for about a year or so... then over the next year I gradually gained 20 lbs back. That brings me up to Jan 05 when I decided it was time to get rid of the evil 20 lb gain before it became even more and ended up sticking it out all the way to goal plus a little extra. In the last 9 months I've lost 54 lbs.

I first started when my first son was 6 months old at 188 lbs.
It took about a year but I lost 55 lbs. I got pregnant with my second son and gained 50 lbs with my pregnancy. But took that back off within 6 months. I have maintained 5 years other than when I was pregnant.

Just posting to offer a bit of a slower journey. I think a lot of you maybe lost faster than me due to being further away from goal. It took me about 7 months of very strict 1200 calories a day or less dieting to lose 28 lbs. However, I don't know if I believe the whole "think how long it took you to put on that weight" as I promptly gained 20 lbs back in 2 months. Am back to being strict with myself, here's to hoping.

I have lost 77 lbs in 13 1/2 months (since Aug 2004). So I have been losing almost 6 lbs a month on average. I think that it is a good pace; not too fast to be unhealthy and risk a yoyo effect, and not too slow to be discouraging.

I started at the end of April and went from 248 to 199 by the end of September. Then I went crazy and started eating a ton again, got back up to 205. I'm 198 as of this morning now, so in about 5 1/2 months I've lost 50 pounds. I'm hoping to have the rest of the weight off by summer.

I,ve lost about 20 so far.... Took me two & a half months. I dont do anything special. I eat anything I want, just stay with single portions.. and exercise a bit. , age might make a difference too, not sure. ... the first time I lost weight was thinner, and took me 3 & a half months to lose 20 lbs. ANY weightloss is something to cheer about! Just think of all the healthy benefits that go with it! you FEEL better, you LOOK better , more energized, the moods start to lift, theres only positives when it comes to weightloss, no matter the pace its lost Hang in there!

Default Great Idea!

What a great idea...I know myself that I get discouraged sometimes thinking that I should have lost more by now and forgetting that the goal is to lose - not lose it overnight!

I started my journey in January 2005

250 lbs - mid January
240.5 lbs - end February
239.5 lbs - end March
237.5 lbs - end April
237.25 lbs - end May
235 lbs - end June
232.75 lbs - end July
234.5 lbs - end August
231.5 lbs - end September

current weight 229.75

My total current loss is 20.25lbs over 9 months.

I still have quite a ways to go before I will meet my goal - but at least I can say proudly that I am going in the right direction this time around - I am determined and that has to count for something!!

Good luck everyone

I've lost 38 pounds in the last 8 months. I started in February at 213...and though I frequently get frustrated with the pace at which my body is "giving it up", I know this is the best way for me to go about it.

Thanks for the reminder that the pace isn't as important as making the journey!!

Cheers to everyone on your successes!

I've lost most of this far quicker than I expected, but it wasn't always like that. I started this in July 2004 at 260. By about October I was down to maybe 248, then I went back up to about 256 and back down to 251 over the course of another five months to take me to the beginning of March this year - so over 9 months I'd lost 9 pounds.

Then everything just clicked and I'd lost another 20lb by the end of April. Since then I've been averaging about 8 - 10lb per month to take me to a total of 73lb, 64 of which have been in the past 7 and a bit months.

Over the past month though it's been nearer to 5lb, partly because I've been very disrupted and not sticking to what I usually do, but also partly I think because I've lost the "easy" weight and it's going to get harder from here.

Thanks for all your posts, ladies!! This is really interesting info !!

And LOL...I was just reading through the thread and realized my own math was wrong when I started it -- which is NOT suprising considering I have the math skills of a 6th grader.

So, correction: I was 163 lbs in mid-April (Tax Day, actually ), and today I'm 143 lbs...{{{Kate gets out calculator to make sure her math is right}}}...so that's 20 lbs lost in 6 months. NOT 8 months...duh, Kate .

I'm losing much quicker in this "second phase" cuz I do a lot more cardio -- just a tip .

I'm normal!!!!!! Sometimes I get discouraged because it looks like everyone is losing faster than me! But that isn't the case. I have lost just over 50lbs in 9 months, which I can see is bang average for someone of my starting weight. I was aiming for 100lbs in two years, so I am still on track for that, then goal in year 3!!!

This was a brilliant thread, the best I have seen in ages, so well done Kate!!!

Hello! I am new here and I want to thank you all for sharing your realistic weight loss stories. I've been exercising and "watching what I eat" for about six weeks now, feeling very discouraged, but reading all these posts really helped!!

I agree with the poster above -- brilliant thread!

great thread! i lost 17 pound in the first two months, then over the next 3 years lost and kept off the next 20 pounds (there was about 10 months in there where I wasn't dieting at all) i started really watching what i am eating again about 1.5 months ago and have lost 2 pounds so far (progress is definitely slower when you have less to lose!)
