And, we need fat in our diet, so eat your pesto made with olive oil! Otherwise you can end up with gallstones... If their diet is heavy on saturated fats, and they don't want you using olive oil then you are better off following your own diet. You should only consume 30g of saturated fat per day MAXIMUM... depending on your body. I was eating way to much of it and I had high cholesterol (219) and I cut it down to about 20g a day during a nutrition project at school and I kept it up for about 6 months now. My cholesterol is now down to 177. That is all I cut fat-wise.

I have been using a daily check in thread in the buddy up section. We post how our days are going, what we have eaten, what we have avoided, exercise we have done. It isn't necessarily a strict weekly weigh in or anything, but a nice place to "fess up" what you have eaten and get support from the other ladies. Come join us if it will help you!

Good luck!

FatMommaCat- Yea what you have said sounds pretty much what iv been researching alot about. What i was doing before was pretty much 2 servings of wholemeal/brown/grainy carbs, so eg wholegrain bread for sandwhich, if i had a pasta dish at nighttime, it would be wholemeal pasta. Id did have like 3 peices of fruit, the rest of a mix of meats or fish and mono-unsaturated fats, most days were under 20g of fat, although some days were a bit higher, just depening on what i was cooking.

Jennifer 3FC- Yes i believe all the gym workers rotate their schedule and a few of them take the role of "nutritionist". I know that dietitians have to have qualifications, but i am unsure if nutritionists due, you'd think they would want to though!

Gym for the past week has been really good. At the moment im only going twice a week, i want to start going more, but i am taking like 2 whole days to recoever from my weights sessions. Once im able to not feel as sore i will go about 3 or 4 times a week. It's just hard to walk around, especially sitting down i have to use mty arms lol

I usually spend about 50minutes doing a mixture of free weights and weight machines, and 5 min cardio beforehand, then 15 mins after then do some stretches. I have lost 100g this week, which the nutritionist said on monday wasnt good enough, she wasnt happy with me. I havent been following their plan, i havent even been following my own, iv had alot of events on this past week happen so i havent been able to watch what im eating, i had to attend a court hearing as a witness to an assult and iv been staying out at my friends house over those few days for moral support, and she lives out in the bush, so i was stuck with their fridge which was pretty unhealthy, but anyway that is all over now and im back home so i can start eating normally again. The nutritionist lady, asked me again, this time the 3rd time, why i dont want to do the shakes. Then she said to me "this is why you are not seeing results, and if you havent lost any weight by next week then we are starting you on the shakes". I told her i am still not doing them, then she said she will give me some sample packs for free and then i can start buying the tins for $70Au. It's not even about the money, i just dont like shakes!

Geez i am enjopying the gym and my personal training sessions, they are all really wonderful its just this lady, she is nice and means well, i just dont think she knows what all of us on these forums know, plus shes just doing her job i guess, but i shouldnt have to tell 2 different people, 5 times that i dont want to do shakes.

Maybe next appointment i should wear a badge on my shirt that reads, Anti-Shakes

Wow Flutter, what a pain that woman is! Tell her next time, you are not interested in shakes and if that is a requirement of the plan then you are going to have to go elsewhere because you do-not-like-them. Surely then she will get the message! I'm sure she doesn't want to lose you as a customer so hopefully that will make her back off. 100g is better than nothing, and if you haven't followed plan this week then it is even better. Progress, not perfection should be perfectly acceptable.

I think i am doing alright for the past few days. My calorie intake is varying between 1400-1700. Iv been hungry since i am eating less but iv drinking more water, i haven't been snacking at night time and instead just drinking mainly water, or coffee or diet coke. Iv been out to dinner tonight, didnt eat too badly, tomorrow is friday, so im going to have to make sure i eat a nice healthy sandwhich before i go out late night shopping with my friends. Would like to avoid the food court. The only junk i ever get anyway is a Footlong Subway Melt, i allow myself to have that once a week. Im not feeling as sore as i use to from my weight sessions, im still sore but still able to move around it's not so bad.

Thankyou for all your support. Ill update with weekley progress.

Flutter, you're not going to Fernwood are you? I'm sorry, but a lot of their "experts" are MORONS whose philosophy is to belittle women into losing weight ... grrr.

You already know what works for you, forget the so-called "experts" ... at one Brisbane gym, my brother-in-law overheard a PERSONAL TRAINER telling a woman that if she wasn't puking once a day, she just wasn't trying hard enough!! Go with your gut.

PS, I am also Aussie (Brissie chick) and I too, have IBS (having colonoscopy soon to confirm diagnosis) so I HEAR YA. IBS can also cause some WICKED weight fluctuations too!!!

Yay! Another Aussie on the boards. Im from Canberra and yes i do go to Fernwood. I chose this gym only because of it's location, i dont drive and it's easiest for me to get to. Im much happier doing my own thing which i think the nutritionist doesn't understand. I have my next slimplicity appointment tomorrow, the lady told me if i havent lost any weight she will start me on their shakes program. Im not too sure how that is going to work, will she feed me spoolfuls of the powder?

Thats so bad that that trainer was telling a women to throw up everyday. Whats up with that? Where did they get their qualification from? Thats the most ridiculas thing i have ever heard.

I hope you do ok with your Prep before the colonoscopy, i dont know if they told you about it, but its non stop toilet trips for 2 days. I know what you mean about the weight fluctuations. I started losing alot of weight at the start and i was worried i wasn't getting the nutrients from the food i was eating so i started eating more to keep my weight steady, and then the ibs died down a bit, but then i started to out on the weight again. My weight has been steady for the past year, and now im down that track of losing it again to get to a healthy weight for my height.

I went to the Gym yesterday to do some weights, i did some free weights exercises that i know of so far, dont know what their called, then i did some of the machines for my legs, back and arms. Fernwood dont have many machines and you know the bench you use to lay down or kneel on when your doing free weights? Well whatever you call the bench, there is only 1. So most of the time when im at the gym i cant do free weights coz the bench is usually taken which is a bit annoying, so im going to be buying some dumbells and a bench for home so i can do my free weights at home. How many benches do most gyms usually have?

I am from Canberra, currently living in Brisbane. Fernwood is a good gym if you don't get caught up in the crap that goes on ... as you say, just do your own thing and you'll be right. The trainer I was talking about wasn't at Fernwood ... but actually worked for Zest, which is a HUGE chain of gyms up here in Qld. There are some dodgy people out there in the fitness/ weight loss industry let me tell you!

I know a bit about the prep for the colonoscopy as a co-worker went through it ... mmm, mmm sounds like FUN ... not lol.

My fluctuations are more day to day fluctuations from uber-BLOATING uuugh, I can go up a dress size or two sometimes. It's not as bad as it was when I was eating crap and not exercising, but still annoying.

Yeah, the one problem I found with Fernwood is the weights are usually a bit wussy and they even discourage you from getting too heavily into it ... my gym has about five or six of those bench things, and I am now doing hard-core weights and loving it

What is Simplicity? Is that a Fernwood thing? To be honest, if you're not losing weight, those dodgy suppliment shake things won't help - if you've been exercising and eating right and it's been going on for more than six weeks you should speak to your doc, or even your gastro specialist.

Simplicity is Fernwoods "weight loss program". Which is pre set meal plan which is based on 1200cals a day. About 250g of carbs, very low in fat which is mainly saturated and Small amounts of Protein. Iv lost 11kg in 6 months by having 1600cals a day, moderate mono-unsaturated fats, Higher Protein and Moderate carbs, no more then 150g of carbs a day and high fibre foods. And this is what i am trying to do again except not the high fibre coz of the ibs.
I am doing Ok but could be doing better. Im really getting into the weights atm. Iv heard all the benefits so that is my main focus at the gym.
Iv just started so im doing 3kg-5kg dumbells depending on the exercise, on the machines, on the leg press im doing 36kg, the other leg machines whatever their names are im doing a bit les then that. Im much stronger in my lower body then my upper body. Im doing 2 sets of 15 which is what my trainer said i should do. Iv got 11 months left on my contract, once it is up i am going to go to a different gym which has more weights. When i was doing some arm exercise with weights the 3kg was too light and the 4kg was too heavey so i wanted to use a 3.5kg but there were none. I thought they should have had some, so i opted for the 4kg instead which i guess is better to try and do it heaver anyway.

I know what you mean about the bloating. I would say when i first got ibs i was 100% bad, but now i am only about 40%. I didnt find anythign that made me better iv just tried to deal with it much better. Im not sure how your coping but if you wish to talk privately about it if you need any advise just send me a private message.

Ok, well i am now considering joining a different Gym. The Gym i originally wanted to join is 2 bus trips from my place, but i really think it is going to be worth it, i am getting fed up with where i am now.

Iv started to notice area's in my upper arms and sholders that are harder and more bumpy then usual, so i am starting to gain muscle, which is great, but i havent been seeing a difference in my upper underneath area of my arms. I was chatten to my mum about this and she said to me to make sure i am balancing out what i am doing. Like i need to work different muscles, not just focus on the same ones, so then i went and had a chat to my boyfriend, and he was telling me, yea those are my triceps and i need to do this and that. Then he was explaining to me which machine to use, and im like...well, we dotn have that machine. And he's like, you must have that machine, and im like, no really we dont! So then he was telling other machines i can use for this and that and im like, um we dont have those either... then i was asking him about doing bench presses? I think thats what their called, and i said to him how i cant really do it coz i dont have anyone to spot me, and he said well try your best to put it on the thingy it rests on, and i said...um we dont have that thing, and i know what that thing is, are we ment to have one? And he said, um yea, your gym is ****.

So it got me thinking, yea, my gym IS ****! We have like... 10 machines, the free weights dont have many half kg weights, like i needed a 3.5kg, and there were only 3 or 4. Theres no one walking around who you can ask for help that works there, and when you do ask at the reception desk, which i have done, they say they will send someone over, then they dont. So you ask again and they say that person will be with you shortly, and then you see that person helping someone else and they never come and help you. I got over that, i know now that i will not get help, so im doing the best i can, i keep asking my boyfriend all the time if im doing things right.

My personal trainer, is really nice, i like her! But she has totally changed what we were doing. I made it clear i wanted to do weights coz i am interested in maybe doing body for life, so i need to learn everything and the proper techniques, so we atrted doing a few, and i mean a few, free weight exercises, which were always the same ones, and we would do one rep of one exercise, switch to a different exercise and do one rep, and then go back to the other exercise again and do another rep, and i have read on some websites that, that is not good, iv read you should do your once exercise, do all your reps, get it done, then move onto the next thing.

I dunno im just getting so annoyed. Everytime my 30minute personal training session is done, she asks me what i am going to do down at the gym, and so i tell her, im going to do weights for about 50min, then do about 15min cardio and leave. And she keeps telling me to go do about 45minutes cardio and then 1 circuit, and im like, i do my cardio at home. I do my jogging on my tredmil, i have an exercise bike, actually we have 2 of each, so i am fine for cardio, but shes like, oh well just do more...

Sorry just needed to vent here. It might sound like i am doing too much weights and im obsessing over it, but the thing is, im not doing enough weights, and i hardly know any free weight exercises, and when i speak up i am told that i am fine with what i am doing already. Right now i am still only doing weights for about... 1hr...twice a week, im still feeling sore from it.

You know, one of the reasons I know Fernwood sux is because I joined too ... but you know what? Without being a newbie at Fernwood, I might not have ever been confident enough to enter the realm of the unisex gym!

I'd say, find out how much it's gonna sting ya to cancel outright. If it's too much, I guess you're just going to have to use the membership until it expires - though you could to sell it in the Trading Post (I work for them and I see quite a few people selling gym memberships) ... if you can't sell it, make the most of the equipment that's there. Skrew your personal trainer! Their trainers are of the "ladies shouldn't lift" brigade and it sucks. Do some research online to learn how to use the free weights they do have (the ladies who lift forum would be a good start) and www.stumptious.com is another good un'

I love my gym, but I would like to change to a closer one so I am in the same situation - but I am just going to use up my six month membership there.

Thanx goeatanapple, Iv been to that site before, i am just checking it out again now.
I just read my gym contract, if i were to cancel now i would have to pay 30% of the remainder of my contract which is way way way too much. I have advertised it on all classifieds, the aussie one. If i can transfer it then that's great, if i cant i will just have to stick it out till August next year.

I have my personal training again tomorrow, so im going to see what we are doing. How do you think i should approach the subject of doing a program like Body for Life? That is kind of what i wanted to do, that's why i joined the gym, so i could learn how to do all these free weight exercises, but i have not learnt hardly any and i am being told every week i should be taking their silly shakes and eating their weight loss diet plan.

Jennifer 3FC, that's a good idea, im going to start a post in the Weightlifting section of the forum.
