Calorie counting need not involve any of the above. Once you know the calorie content of macronutrients and basic foods, you can loosely estimate calories and portions. I've been doing this for close to three years now, with no calculator, log book or app in sight. I call it being "calorie aware" rather than obsessively measuring and logging every calorie. I find it super-easy. Of course, you (generic you) need to be honest with yourself to avoid portion creep.
