Smile Losing Weight on the Road

Hi Everyone!

One of the biggest parts of my job as a professional actor is the travelling. Because I'm on a National Tour, I'm not exaggerating when I say I move to a new town every week. Eating while on the road is a huge challenge for me. Living in hotels about 75% of the time, it's really easy to eat fast food for every meal.

Exercise is a whole different matter. I teach dance classes to elementary school kids every week, but that's about as far as my workouts go because of my schedule.

Does anyone have any tips for losing weight on the road? It's been a challenge for me so far to find healthy, cheap, and quick food and to find a workout program that works with my schedule.

Presumably you are american so i don't know what the food availability is like.

There's plenty of food you can get from the supermarket that will help. Lots of fruit, buy your own breakfast foods and prepare them in your room.

If you only snack on fruit and carrots, you should be able to limit your meals..

Try fruit salad and natural yoghurt for breakfast.

Make sardine sandwiches or banana sandwiches on wholegrain bread.

From the supermarket buy
1 can beans or lentils, drain and rinse
add 1 chopped tomato or corn cob or other salad vegetable
1 capsicum or other salad vegetable
1 finely grated carrot or beetroot or other salad vegetable
1-2tsp olive oil you carry around with you
1-2tsp of balsamic vinegar you carry around with you
A bit of fetta cheese crumbled into it. I can buy it in a tub
black pepper.
5 walnut halves or other nuts or 1tsp mixed seeds.

You should be able to prepare this in your room and eat it for lunch or dinner.

You can pack a small chopping board, vegetable knife, nice grated, and appropriate bowls and cutlery.

This recipe is one of my basics, i can vary it a lot according to what i have on hand.

Easy. I travel with a travel scale to weigh myself. I also tend to stay in hotels with mini-bars that I can stock with food I buy from a local store. I eat a lot of canned fish too so that helps.

So I have no excuses when it comes to healthy eating while traveling. It's often easier that at home because I can buy more varieties of fresh food.

Exercise is more challenging however. For that I try to pick hotels with gyms or investigate where I can run before arrivial.

When I'm on the road, I try to look for vegetarian options to make sure I'm getting in veggies, as Ian suggests fish is a good option too, lower cal than meats. Good suggestions from Patience as well, I'd checkout the salad bar at the supermarket if you can get to one.

If you have to eat fast food, look up the nutritional information before hand and find some better choices, grilled chicken, skip the fries, some places have salads and wraps, most will skip the mayo if you ask, kids meals with sliced apples instead of fries, try and make sure you have an idea of what you're going to get before you get there.

I do crunches and stretches in my room, if there's not a treadmill, I try to find a safe place to walk, like a community park.
