People do get to goal using MFP, similar apps, and just plain calorie counting. As long as you're eating at a deficit, you will keep losing weight.
However, if someone
stops calorie counting and resumes eating the way s/he did prior to losing weight, s/he'll gain weight back. There's no getting around that with any weight loss plan--we have to change our long-term eating in order to keep off weight we've taken off. I've lost this same 30 lbs 3 times. I didn't gain it back because I continued with changed eating habits--I gained it back because I returned to prior eating habits.
If what you're doing is working right now, I'd stay with it. If it stops working (or you are getting burned out and want to try something else), then try something else.
You can also incorporate protein shakes as an occasional measure and see how you like them. Would they make a good meal substitute a few times a week? Perhaps every day for breakfast? It doesn't need to be an all or nothing thing.
