One Last Virtual EZ-5k in Memory of Gary

Those of you who have been around may remember EZMoney's Unofficial Virtual 5K weekends. Members would sign up, then return to post their times, photos, and stories. For a lot of folks, an EZ-5K was the push they needed to run or walk that distance for the first time.

His first 5K Challenge was almost exactly this day back in 2008. Here is what he wrote:

Quote:

I thought it would be a good idea to have our first annual "3FC ~ I'M NOT A WHIMP ANYMORE ~ 5K!"

For those of you that don't know ~ 5K equals 3.1 miles!

Since it is my idea, I am making the rules....First rule ~ Rules can change!

DATE OF RACE ~ APRIL 12-13 Either day you want to run/walk it is fine with me.

COST ~ A few calories!

LOCATION ~ Wherever you want!

PRIZES ~ PRIDE!

I'm not looking for miracles here, I think if we get 100 of us in it for our first one that would be cool! So are you in?

We will ALL benefit by your entry...especially YOU!!

I'd love it if anyone would like to join me in running an EZ-5K, on those same dates 5 years later, in his memory.

Post here to join in, and then with your results and any memories you'd like to share.

RIP, Gary.

Shannon in ATL 04-11-2013 08:25 PM

I'm in.
I didn't do the very first EZ-5k, my first was around Mother's Day in 2009. He assigned us numbers, and I remember making a race bib and pinning it to my shirt at my local park.

I'll make one this time as well, and will be back with pictures and my time.

This one is for you, Gary.

Amanda, I can't believe you found the original thread!

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/weig...s-ezmoney.html

And the results thread from the first one!

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/weig...sted-here.html

Oh, the memories!!!!

I'm in! Not very elite these days, but if EZ were here I would suggest a "Haul yourself 5K and then take a nap" category.

mandalinn82 04-11-2013 08:32 PM

Over 200 people did the first one. That's over 600 collective miles.

Shannon in ATL 04-11-2013 08:33 PM

Oh wow. Reading that first thread made me a little teary, Midwife.

junebug41 04-11-2013 08:34 PM

I love this and will complete mine tomorrow morning via treadmill. I'm such a wuss when it comes to races, and ran my first last fall. But I'll do this!

alinnell 04-11-2013 08:38 PM

I'm in. I did do these 5k for a while. I do believe that it was this first one, that I did with my DH and dogs, that my DH stopped me toward the end and remarked at how horrible my varicose vein looked and that prompted me to have it take care of. I never posted the photos then, but here's a link to it.

BTW, the church in the photos is where President Carter was for several days before his burial. Virtual 5k

lunarsongbird 04-11-2013 08:42 PM

I didn't know Gary, but I've been going back through some of his old posts. Incredible.

I would be honored to lift up Gary's family up in prayer as I walk/jog/skip/crawl 3.1 miles on Saturday. (I don't pray much, but it looks like Gary's family was pretty faith based.)

elvislover324 04-11-2013 08:44 PM

Count me in too!

jiffypop 04-11-2013 08:47 PM

We've lost a good 3fc friend, and he's still inspiring us. This should be an annual event. Unfortunately, i still don't have the stamina to walk more than a block, let alone 5k, but i'll do what i can.

CyndiM 04-11-2013 09:08 PM

I'm in. Those challenges made me push my walks a little further and a little faster. Thanks EZ

Suzanne 3FC 04-11-2013 09:25 PM

I'm in! Friday, April 12.

Karen31 04-11-2013 09:26 PM

You can count me in on this too. I don't know if I will get it done Friday, Saturday or Sunday -- depends on our crazy weather here. Thanks and I agree-- this needs to be an annual event. Thanks for starting this.

RavenWolf 04-11-2013 09:28 PM

I'm in for Saturday! I wasn't a member here until this January, so I am unaware of all of this. I'm going to go read the thread now!

Will you be assigning numbers? And will there be categories? I'd be the "with dogs" category!

LockItUp 04-11-2013 09:30 PM

I just so happen to already be signed up for my very FIRST 5k this Saturday (13th). I will absolutely run it in memory of Gary!

I'm IN!

shcirerf 04-11-2013 10:17 PM

Did my first 5k last weekend, doing another one on 5/4.

In his memory!:D

BillBlueEyes 04-11-2013 10:26 PM

I'm in for one of the days this weekend. It's for you Gary.

Found my old category in that thread:
EVEE...OO ~ The "almost" RACHAEL RAY SPECIAL ~ for BILLBLUEEYES
where EVEE stands for Extra Virgin Elite Elder.

nelie 04-11-2013 11:15 PM

I never did any of the original 5ks but I'm in (and glad the weather has cooled a little for it).

gggirls 04-12-2013 07:28 AM

My first EZ virtual 5K was Memorial Day, 2008, so I was close to the first one. Sign me up!

Heather 04-12-2013 07:56 AM

I'm in!! I did a couple of those on the elliptical back in the day and will happily do it again in memory of Gary! Thanks for thinking of this, Amanda!!

Clydegirl 04-12-2013 08:55 AM

I did that one too. I was in the overweight SAHM group, the early bird special.

I always enjoyed his 5K threads. Plus they got me moving.

I will do one in his honor.

Cali Doll 04-12-2013 09:22 AM

I'd be honored! I'm in!

Daki 04-12-2013 09:43 AM

I may not have known him personally but I enjoyed him and 3FC means a lot to me and he means a lot to 3FC. I'm in. Doing it tonight, it'll probably be mostly walking but I'm gunna do it.

XLMuffnTop 04-12-2013 11:17 AM

I enjoyed his humor in the baseball threads. :)

I will also take part in this. Tomorrow I will do a walk/run mix.

Jimmy Carter? He isn't dead.

Congrats on completing that run.

cbmare 04-12-2013 11:50 AM

I wish I could sign up. I can't do this any longer because of A Fib and now vertigo. I'm there in spirit.

Oops! Thanks for catching that Mare! I meant President Ford!!!

elvislover324 04-12-2013 01:29 PM

My 5k to Gary's memory is done, part ran and part walked. RIP Gary, you will be sorely missed here.

traveling michele 04-12-2013 04:28 PM

I was just thinking that I need to start doing some running. I will definitely do a 5K sometime this weekend in memory of Gary.

We should do it annually in Gary's memory and honor.

bargoo 04-12-2013 07:04 PM

Count me in, gonna try to do it 4-12.

WardHog 04-12-2013 08:52 PM

I'm in, too! Tomorrow.

Riddy 04-12-2013 09:00 PM

Count me in, too.

Kitcherella 04-13-2013 04:10 AM

My 45-minute run today was dedicated to him. May he rest in peace.

traveling michele 04-13-2013 11:07 AM

Yesterday I ran for 51 minutes in Gary's honor. RIP my dear friend.

Riddy 04-13-2013 12:08 PM

Done! And my best time since restarting running for spring. 42:36!

I didn't know Gary well, but I always enjoyed reading his posts.

JenMusic 04-13-2013 12:08 PM

I had a long run planned for today, 10k, so I guess I did 2 5ks in Gary's memory. It's a beautiful day here in GA, and I prayed for Gary's family and loved ones as I ran - may they know and feel the peace that comes with being sure that Gary is with the Lord he loved so much.

Megan1982 04-13-2013 01:42 PM

My dog and I just did our walking slightly >5K in Gary's memory. We walked just over 11,000 steps according to my pedometer. We smiled and waved to people we passed, and stopped to say hi to some friends. Not that I'm usually a grouch on our walks, but thinking of Gary made me extra-conscious of being kind to those around me, because he was always so kind. RIP Ez, we will miss you but I know you're in a happy place.

Clydegirl 04-13-2013 04:03 PM

I did my 5K this morning. I walked it and it took 1 hour 3 minutes.

Thanks Gary for getting me moving.

ForMyRoo 04-13-2013 09:25 PM

Ran my first 5K today! Kicking myself for not timing it.
