I didn't know Gary, but certainly felt his presence on these boards. My husband and I ran our very first 5k ever today in his memory. 38:35
RIP Gary. Thank you for getting so many people moving! |
Finished my 5K tonight in about 54 minutes or so. Good job to everyone that has completed this so far. Awesome work.

Did the Warrior Dash yesterday in Gary's honor. I don't know my time, but I ran the whole thing, did all the obstacles and got muddy, and it was 90 degrees out. Kicked my butt. RIP Gary!

This morning, I ran on a path that I used to love, but rarely run on now, as I'm usually indoors and in classes at the gym. I did this in Gary's honor, and really hoped I'd cross someone walking a golden retriever. I went 4.25 in just about 40 minutes and I thought of Gary along the way. How even when he was ill, he checked in just after Hurricane Sandy to see how **I** was doing. Gary's post were inimitable. Full of emoticons, written in that humorous voice, offering practical wisdom and good advice on getting by in life, and above all, his testimony to his faith. I do not share his faith but I honor it. He was a good, good man.

Ran my longest run ever today - 15 miles. Miles 3-8 were with the MP3 player off listening to the sound of my breath and thinking about Gary.
|
Mostly walked, but it is done.
|
All done - a 6.4 KM walk in an hour. Thought warm thoughts of Gary on the way.
|
Just got back from Gary's 5K Challenge. Thought of Gary the whole way.
|
Done. I thought about Gary, and his impact here, the whole time. He will be missed.
|
I'm done too. I frequently workout for about 45 minutes, but yesterday I really thought about making it to a 5k (took 46.5 min). I did a little fist pump at the end. It was a great workout! I also thought about Gary and the goofy titles and ways he had of engaging people in these 5ks. He will be missed.

Angie Here:
I just saw a post from Karen on Gary's FB page about the virtual 5 in memory of Gary. It was fun reading your posts and looking back at his original post. I actually did a 5k on Saturday, April 13. Amanda and I signed up for it in January, before things got really bad for Gary. We both hemmed and hawed about doing it. I opted to go with friends since it was better than sitting at home alone. It was The Neon Run and held at night in San Diego at Qualcomm Staduim. As you ran the course, you were sprayed with neon glow paint and ran through tents with black lights. I'm still cleaning yellow glo-paint out of my ears! This was my first 5k in a couple of years and I kept thinking about Gary looking down at me and thinking "What is Da-Ang up to now?!" Keep it up! Keep running/jogging/walking - doing whatever you do to keep your body moving. Take care of yourselves and your health. |
I did mine today....it wasn't a real good time (57 minutes) but it was a good time remembering Gary and all the memories that everyone here will always have of him, Angie and his Goldens!! It is almost like he has pulled each and everyone of us into his family. He will never be forgotten. Angie, thanks for sharing him with us all these years.
My niece ran the glow run in Arkansas and she was covered in the paint too but said she had so much fun!! Hugs to you!! |
