I bought a new scale.

  • And it's now my enemy. Why you ask? But it's so pretty! It's glass and sleek and has digital numbers and matches your bathroom decor? How can it be so horrible?

It said that I am 20lbs heavier than my older scale. I hopped back and forth at least ten times like a crazy person to make sure I wasn't just seeing things and pink elephants hadn't moved into my brain.

I wasn't seeing things. So, now I'm horribly depressed. What was my weight BEFORE this spiffy sleek new scale? Am I doing all this for nothing?! Have I done ANYTHING?!

Ugh. I hate the new scale.
  • Obviously you need a third scale - but regardless if you actually are 20lbs heavier than you thought who cares? It doesn't change anything. You've lost a lot of weight and you'll lose more.
  • I can relate! My old (first) scale underestimated my weight by almost a stone.

I realised it was out when I weighed myself at my parents and my grandparents homes. Two scales couldn't be wrong!

So I got a new scale and started over with that. However, I also kept the old scale for comparison purposes.

If you know your starting weight on the wrong scale, you can still count how much you've lost by weighing yourself on it occasionally.

Ok, so you may weigh more than you think, but you have still lost an impressive amount of weight and you can continue to do so. Don't let it dampen your spirits, you can do this
  • You guys are right. I'm putting the scales in the closet for a month or so and not looking at them.

I'm going by measuring tape and how I feel. After all, this isn't about vanity, this is about lifestyle improvement. And maybe a little vanity.
  • I know it makes it feel like you 'gained', but truly it is the relative change in the number that matters. If you've lost thirty or fifty pounds, it doesn't matter whether it puts you at 250 or 230 or whatever, you've still lost the same amount and the achievement is still momentous.

Don't let a tool dispirit you!
  • You're right. All of you are.

And my husband said if he saw me step on either one of them he was going to throttle me.
  • Haha, in a loving way, I'm sure
  • Yea He keeps saying, "It's ok! We're working on it!" As if it's his personal mission too. And "You'll get there!" He's been a real doll.

Until it comes to things like the scale issue. Then he can't understand why I feel the need to belittle all my hard work.
  • Just a thought - do you know if the new scale is calibrated correctly?
  • Ugh--I'm sorry--that's really demoralizing. I check my scale every so often by putting weights on it--make sure the number it says equals the total of the weights. Maybe it's off.
  • I put a bunch of things on it and checked them twice to what I know they would weigh, like a gallon of milk, the dog..It's right!

I just have to work a little bit harder. No big deal, right?
  • Excellent idea Hungryhungryhippo- our scale is pretty old and I have wondered how accurate it is. UPDATE it is and so I am not going to buy a new one
  • Oh God I would die if that happened! I totally feel for you. What an awesome husband.
  • I was at my mother-in-law's place last weekend, stepped on her bathroom scale, and was dismayed to find I weighed 5 pounds more than expected. I asked her if her scale might be off, and she barked, "no, it's perfectly accurate." She's always had a knack for saying exactly what will make people feel worse. I've talked about it numerous times with my husband, who says that's "just the way she is."

    F.
  • Well both scales are in the closet now under some shoes. I'll pull it out in a month and check, until then, I'm going to keep trudging along, day by day

My MIL is the same way, I just sing in my head to ignore her.
