My friends like to drink, and so do I!

  • Most people I know drink until they are drunk-not sure how many drinks it takes them. That def includes skinny people, but they probably eat less than I do, so in the end they maintain the weight. I only dropped it unless I am at a huge event, cause I'm neutral about it. So if you like it, just make sure it fits into your calorie plan.
  • This is the way my drinking goes -- most of the time (like if I'm having dinner with my boyfriend or friends), I stick with one or two and I'm done with it. But for a special occasion (Birthday/holiday, like St. Patty's), I'll let myself go and drink til I get drunk, then I stop. Majority of the time, I don't drink during the week and if I do it's like ONE beer/mixed drink. And most weekends are like that as well, it's just like at least once or twice a month there's an occasion where everyone wants to let their hair down and get drunk. Like tonight, I've been pretty stressed out and I do NOT want to be sober.

I guess there's no real way around it, though because getting drunk isn't really good for a diet, lol. I guess I'm probably gonna have to be one of those that has to sit there with my one beer and watch everyone else get drunk...bleh.
  • I drink. Probably too much. But I've been able to lose weight with it by just restricting the rest of my calories and sticking to low/no-cal mixers. I can't really drink beer anymore because I can drink 12 of them before I know what happened. Vodka and diet soda (diet orange soda with vanilla vodka is great); light juice with rum/vodka/gin; wine mixed with a little sparkling water.

For me, the key has been having a very light breakfast (I know this doesn't work for some people, but for some of us, having a bigger breakfast seems to make us hungrier during the day. This took me forever to realize, and it's made a big difference for me)- like 150 or 200 cal., a big huge salad for lunch 250-300 cal, and then a reasonable meat/starch/veggie dinner 400 cal. On 1500 cal/day I can still afford a few drinks if I'd rather have that than snacks.
  • When I lost over a hundred pounds I drank alchohol and I have friends doing well with weight loss that are healthy, look great and drink. For me I like the taste and find wines and certain beers do enhance the palate, which can be good or bad. lol I now see having light beers like 67 (67 calories) enjoyable at a bbq. Like others suggested I plan to drink, so eat accordingly or use my ww bonus points, just like you might plan to have cake at a birthday party or pizza.
  • I have to say, I've never been willing to cut out alcohol while losing weight. I don't have an issue with it, I'd just rather drink wine than eat cake to be honest. Plus, I'm 27 and I work in NYC - all my friends always want to do dinner, drinks, happy hour etc.

When I decided to make a lifestyle change, I didn't want to take away all the things that made me happy so instead I just made sure to control those things better. If I go to Happy Hour or dinner & drinks, I only do it once during the week and I try to work out before or arrange it so that's my rest day anyway. If I want to go out on the weekend, I do it one night so the the other night I can rest up and go to my early morning kick-boxing class.

Also, if you're worried about the calories, maybe switch to vodka and soda and avoid the empty calories in fruity drinks or beer but you should have to give it up altogether. I started making frozen margaritas from scratch [they are my favorite] when I realized most of the calories/sugar is in the pre-made mix and I avoid things like frozen daiquries etc. - the ones at TGI Friday's type places can be anywhere from 250 - 750 cals per drink! Yikes!
  • For me the problem is not the alcohol (my liver is about the size of a U.S. dime or 1 yen coin, ahaha) so much as the great decisions I make under its influence, like "I'm going to eat 10 wings and pizza and wash it down with CANDY BAAARRRSSS." Those decisions usually wind up as up to 5 lbs of gain overnight and a very bloated face, plus a double hangover from booze and junk food carb withdrawal.

I've never totally cut out drinking, but I try to keep it minimal and only really go hog wild as rarely as possible.
  • Rum and diet coke runs about 100 calories so if you're just having one or two that should be able to work into your plan.

I went off course with alcohol this weekend as it was my anniversary and DH and I went to a wine bar. We bought a few glasses then went back to the hotel lounge and had a few more. It had been a while since I'd had anything to drink so it gave me a nasty little hang over the next morning. Needless to say, I'm in my late 20s and already feel like I'm getting too old to drink to excess! I won't be drinking much anytime soon.
