Hi ladies,
I appreciate all your responses.
I think my best strategy - at times when the smell gets too tempting - is to remove myself from my workstation and go talk to someone or just go to the washroom, etc.
I would never any fragrances to "override" the smell of deep fried food. For one, I have mild fragrance sensitivity myself and I hate having to breathe in other people's aftershaves, eau de colognes, etc. Our office is supposedly a scent free environment (each washroom has a feeble printed notice asking employees to be CONSIDERATE of others. Let me tell you that nobody is terribly considerate - everybody assumes that "their" scent is so lovely that nobody can have any objections to it).
BTW, Kaplods, you have idea how I agree with what you said in your post.
There was a time when we were not supposed to eat food at our desks but the policy has never been enforced and right now, with the reconstruction, there really is nowhere else to eat. In addition, due to the nature of our job, we often work through lunch hour (or part of it) - in order to accommodate our customers - so we each eat whenever it suits us.
Every here knows that I am eat healthy food and watch my diet / weight, and I assume they probably make fun of me behind my back. That's fine with me - it's my life and my body and I am not telling anybody else what to do with theirs.
My post was really meant to vent when the temptation got too strong.
And for whoever asked if I do talk to the said coworker - yes, of course we talk, although we are not exactly in love with each other (but that's an entirely different story - let's just say that outside of our professional life, we absolutely nothing to say to each other). However, I do not think it is fair to ask her to eat her fried tots elsewhere - I am sure I would not be thrilled if somebody asked me to take my mexican chili elsewhere. My main reasoning is that I cannot expect anybody to make allowances on the account of my weight loss. After all, if I cannot walk by McDonald's without letting myself be pulled in by the aroma of their French fries, I probably have a lot more work to do on myself. For the most part, I am doing really well with my exercise and my clean eating, and the scale is reflecting that.
