Default looking for support

hey, everyone! I have been with 3fc for a long time, but have stayed mainly within the buddy-up section. Maybe this is where I should be instead of there. I am really looking for support and motivation.

I am 21 years old, about 5'5", and I weigh 240lbs. I have been to weight watchers before... and I lost 35 lbs. But life happened and I stopped paying attention the way I should, and I gained it all back. My life is fast, and most of the time it is so easy to just stop and get something to eat. But I'm needing to take time for myself to actually make something health and to find time for the gym. I am a full-time college student, I work at a radiology office as a precertification specialist and 24-27 hours per week, and next month I will also become a Partylite Consultant, which I'm pretty excited about. Maybe if I keep myself busy, I won't think about eating so much.

I have two very important motivations right now. First of all, I may have an opportunity to go on a 7-day cruise in may through PartLite if I qualify through sales, and inJuly, my best friend of 8 years is getting married and I want to look good in my dress. Actually, one thing that has helped has been to pin up pictures of him and myself to remind me what my goals are. It seems to be working well for now.

Ok! That's my story! I'm sorry I was so long-winded! I hope to hear from someone soon!

Thanks so much,
Seren Dee

Hi Seren Dee:

I was surprised to see your thread moving down the board and that no one had welcomed you to this area yet. So here I am, just call me the Welcome Wagon!!!

It sure sounds like you are one busy, busy person! But you know, sometimes busy doesn't give you a chance to eat healthy. I know from experience. You are right that you need to take some time for yourself and make some of your own dinners, etc. It really helps.

I'm an old lady in comparison to you, but I have two sons your age, 21 & 23, who are full time students and I know what they are going through to try and control their waistlines. It's not all that easy.

The 21 y/o has found that a slimfast in the morning has helped a great deal and that gets him through until lunch. Most of the time he comes home from work (it's summer after all) for lunch and has some leftovers that I have portioned out for him. On the fast food front, there are grilled chicken sandwiches offered almost everywhere and they run between 7 & 8 WW points if you order them without mayo. Also if you have Wendy's nearby, their Mandarin Chicken Salad is out of this world. Just don't get the oriental dressing (14g fat) I usually order the reduced fat Ranch to go with it. It's only 3.5 WW points if you don't add the almonds and the rice noodles that come with it, 7 WW points if you do add it all.

Party Lites should be great fun. I sold Princess House crystal for 8 years and Park Lane jewelry for 5 years in home party plan. I just loved it. Just beware of eating all the goodies at your hostess' house. Make yourself a rule before you even start that all you'll enjoy is a big glass of ice water. You can always pack a granola bar for in the car on the way home, and make sure you have dinner before you leave home.

Ok, that's my best advice and welcome. Hope to see you around the Support area. Good luck with getting back OP.

Thank you so much for the reply! Those suggestions will help! Yeah, I've thought about that whole snacking thing that goes along with the parties, but I think that I'll be too busy to eat and most of the time there is a fruit and/or veggie tray and maybe I can get some of my veggies in that way

It does sound like fun, I just hope I'm not trying to do too much at once with two jobs and being a full-time student. Oh well... I'll figure something out!

C-ya!

Hi, Seren Dee!! Actually, this is the first time I've spotted your post ... I think the board is moving so fast these days some of the threads are moving down before people are getting to them! But you are definetely welcome and I'm in awe of your active life. I think it's great you are working so hard on your goals.

For me, though, the odd thing is that the busier I am and the more on the run, the more I don't pay attention to what I'm eating. Thinthinker's sons' menu ideas all sound great. I'm an avid slimfast fan, though that can backfire if I have too MANY slimfasts. I'll have to try the Mandarin Chicken Salad. Thanks, Thinthinker, for the idea.

Seren Dee, please jump on one of our threads, if you haven't already! It's a fun group here with lots of different challenges and check-ins going on. I personally think weight loss is a fun game and know we will all succeed in our journey if we can keep each other going long enough ... or keep ourselves going in the dead of night by posting here!

Hi! Well, I've tried fitting the slimfast in with my weight watchers plan, and it works. But those things are expensive! And I usually end up hungery sooner for some reason.

Those mandrin chicken salads at wendy's are good, and so are the taco salads! (You just may have to have a few extra points handy!) But what I go for most of the time is the Chicken BLT salad. I usually order the light ranch with that, also because the honey mustard that comes with it is like 8 points by itself!! I don't remember off the top of my head how many points they are, but they are very filling.

Well, Iwill check in later. I've got lots of homework and I'm trying to get it done so I can have some sort of weekend without worrying about it! Thanks, guys!

I'm having a Partylite party next month. Of course, since I'm the hostess - all the food will be healthy. I also love to cook, which helps.

We seem to have some things in common. I have three reasons for wanting to lose weight. The first is my brother is getting married next year and I am one of the bridesmaids. The second is that I gained 10 pounds this year (due to the candy jar my secretary started keeping) and none of my winter clothes fit. I have no desire to buy larger clothes. The last is that I have been suffering some sports injuries that I don't think I would have if I wasn't overweight. That's actually the kicker for me because I don't like having things hurt. It makes me seem older than I am.

Anyway, I'm 26. I work full time and go to grad school at night. I also workout 45-60 minutes 6 days a week (two days I lift weights and 4 I either take a Spinning class at the gym, do step aerobics at home (rarely), or use some exercise machine in the gym. I cook nearly everything I eat and have been working on watching excess calories (the candy jar my secretary keeps on her desk for example - which she has now knitted a cozy to hide). I weigh about 183 lbs (as of 3 days ago) - which is 5.5 lbs less than I weighed 3 weeks ago. My biggest problem has actually been perhaps not eating enough. With the extra exercise I've added (I've also upped the intensity) I've been hungry a lot and have lost weight faster than I expected to (even though I've been eating 2000 calories a day).

Hi! Nice to meet you. I've wanted to try a spinning class... they seem like so much fun. But I don't know if we even have them around here or even how to find out. I will be attempting to go back to the gym sometime this week. I had surgery on August 1st for a shoulder injury from a car accident last december. But I thought maybe I could go ahead and go back and use the bikes. They've got the normal stationary bikes and the ones that kinda lean back a little... you sit into them instead of sit up on them, so I won't have to worry about falling off!! I have two more weeks before my arm comes out of the monsterous sling, but I have 6 months after that of physical therapy. I have to start exercising before then because I am Absolutely determined to lose this weight before summer.

I have a question tho... do you guys think that losing 40 lbs before the end of the year, which would be ~10 lbs/month, is too much or an inattainable goal for me to shoot for? I am trying to set realistic goals for myself, but I don't want to set myself up for failure, either, y'know?

I think I may have to start saving up and once I get to goal, send myself and my mother on a cruise... if I don't get the one that I may be able to qualify for!

Ok, well... It's, umm. something in the morning and I've been studying all day/evening/night, so I think it's time to take a little break and go to bed Oh, but not to fear! I have *plenty* to keep me busy for tomorrow!!! (JOY!!)

Default Yes - it's too much

If you want the weight to stay off - a more realistic goal is 0.5-1 pound per week. You can lose a pound a week by reducing caloires needed to maintain weight by 250 and adding 250 calories worth of exercise. At the very beginning, you may lose a little more than that. Usually, when a person loses more than 1-2 pounds, it tends to be muscle. Also, people have a more difficult time maintaining a loss that happens quickly. Part of the reason for that is many times, people will also lose muscle mass.

When the body believes itself to be starving (which it often does when creating a calorie deficit of 1000 calories per day - the amount needed to lose 2 pounds in a week) - often when the body believes itself to be starving, it will cannibalize muscle to use as energy. When you lose muscle, you lose the calorie burning powerhouses of the the body. This means you slow down your metabolism, which makes it easier to regain weight you've lost.

The recumbent bike (the one where the pedals are out in front) is probably the exercise that will place the least stress on your shoulder. The only other thing that might be okay is the EFX machine, but I think that usually carries a natural arm motion (that you would clearly need to avoid).

Thank you for the advice. The reason why I thought that maybe 10 lbs a month would be ok is because I have heard of many people (with weight watchers) losing quite a bit in a short amount of time. I wish I knew how they were doing it. I definately don't plan to starve my body or anything. I don't think I could do that even if I wanted to! I enjoy food too much, unfortunately:P

I have also thought about the EFX machine, but you're right... I think I would use my arms more than I should, so I will just stick with the other deal for now

Thanks! SerenDee

Sorry, Seren, I'm with Ariashley. 10# in a month consistently is a bit much. I think when you see people "losing quite a bit in a short amount of time" they are usually people with a bit more weight to lose than you have. I took 50# off over 4 months when I first started, but that has slowed down now. You'll be far better off pacing yourself, that way when it's gone, it's gone for good!
