Obesity absolutely causes cycle irregularity and infertility. Sometimes losing weight can actually trigger ovulation and it can regulate your cycles as well. I *think* this has something to do with estrogen and testosterone storage in fat. Amenorrhea due to low body weight causes LH asn FSH hormones to be supressed.
My doctor attributes my 3-5 periods a year to obesity. I was put on BCP at 22 and just went off Nuvaring (I'm 27). If I am now regular at a normal weight, then that will be the proof that my obesity was the cause of the many issues I had.
As for OP, I do second someone's suggestion of going to Planned Parenthood for a "pill consult". However, since you are having fewer than 4 periods a year I would strongly recommend a routine exam to investigate any potential problems. I know it's far from pleasant, but I just repeat, "it's only a couple of minutes, it's only a couple of minutes..."
