hi,

does anyone have any tips on avoiding emotional eating? that's one of my big issues. if i'm stressed, sad, depressed, etc, i tend to find comfort in food, especially the high-caloric kind.

any tips or suggestions would be appreciated

jp

Hi Jp - I've started working out when ever I get stressed it keeps my mind busy and I feel alot better than I do when I go pig out.

Veggie- Thanks .My little one is doing really well still some stomach trouble but other wise he's acting fine I just cant wait until it's all over .Have a great few days !!
fld

VeggieGirl1 11-07-2008 09:58 AM

Good morning all..

Turns out, I will not be away, so here I am!
Hope you are all ok...fld20, glad to hear your little one is one the mend...did they ever id what it came from?

JP - In addition to fld20's good suggestion re exercise, I have found that it sometimes helps me to write down on note cards ahead of time, how I feel immediately after a binge or day of bad eating...how sad I am and disappointed with myself, or how sick I feel or something like that...and then whip out those cards right when I am drawn to the kitchen, refrig, and about to eat badly....just reading how I felt after is sometimes (not always, I admit:p), enough to stop me from doing something I will later regret.

Hope this helps...we're here for you...you can do it..:carrot:

Morning!!

Veggie- They actaully sent a sample to the CDC (they'll compare to other cases of ecoli) so we'll see what they come up with .I'm thinking one of the fast food places we ate at on our way to Montana.Great suggestion about righting it down I might have to try that .

JP- I hope your days going well for you .

pong86 11-07-2008 12:12 PM

hi, it's me again!

i just finished my workout: 20 min. moderate pace walk and 20 min. workout video! wohoo!

i almost quit on myself 5 min. into my walk cuz i pushed myself too hard and tried to sprint, but on my way back up the stairs to my apartment, i talked myself out of it. this may sound silly since i just joined 3FC yesterday, but i remembered all the support i was getting from here and that helped me keep going!

so thanks again for the great support! i feel great about myself today! :0)

It is so great that you were able to convince yourself not to give up on the exercise...now keep at it:coach::carrot:

Good morning everyone

A good day yesterday...no cravings, and ate healthy; also got in exercise, and I did again this morning...another rainy day though, and a saturday to boot which is always problematic:mad:; So I'll try to keep busy...my daughter is at a swim meet all day, so maybe I'll try and clean her room:dizzy:

Have a good day, and stay strong!

hi all!

thanks for the support! dinner yesterday got strayed a little bit cuz i was invited to a friend's house for dinner with her family.

but, pretty good eating today. i even talked myself out of eating a bag of chips, although i had a couple pieces, but not the whole thing! wasn't able to exercise today cuz had a busy schedule and the weather isn't cooperating here either. i may try to fit something in though before the night is over. otherwise, all is well.

good job veggie with exercising despite the weather.

fld, glad your days are going well too!

jp

VeggieGirl1 11-09-2008 09:38 AM

Hi everyone

Glad to hear we are all doing well:carrot:

JP - I'd say that's a major thing, to stop at some chips rather than eat the whole bag...for me, that's even harder to do than not having them at all...

Finally, the sun is shining, which is great, althought it means I have not excuse to sit in the house and eat:o

Have a great day!

good evening!

good eating again today, resisited tempations. i'm not sure if this counts as exercise, but i walked around the mall for a couple of hours! then i did a 20 min. exercise video when i got home.

veggie, glad the sun came out for you. unfortunately for me, i got snow. brrr... :0)

jp

VeggieGirl1 11-10-2008 09:07 AM

Good morning

Glad to hear everyone is doing well...seems that there really is something to this support tihng...I know it helps me to come on and hear from you guys...hope it does the same for you:hug:

JP - walking for several hours around the mall definitely counts as exercise in my book...certainly better than sitting on the couch all afternoon;)

Yesterday was good, although I had a frustrating experience...As I was leaving church yesterday, two women who are running a hospitality campaign were at the entrance handing out pretty wrapped cello bags of mms and hershey kisses...I really didn't think I could refuse without insulting them (trust me on this), but I had just gotten rid of all the halloween candy and the last thing I wanted to do was have more in the house:?: I took the bag, and while I wanted to throw it in the nearest trash can on my way home, I felt that was wrong too given the effort they had made. So what did I end up doing...you got it, I brought it into the house, and ate it after lunch:o

Now I know it was no big deal, and in a way I did have a small victory in that I stopped myself at that treat, and ate no more bad stuff...for me, that 's huge...But I just thought it was funny, finding such temptation at church:rofl:

Have a great day,

Veggie

Morning -

JP- Great job !! I'd definatelly consider walking the mall exercise as well . I know I'm wore out after a day at the mall .

Veggie - Congrats on stopping at just that !! It's way to easy to keep going . I'm lucky on that if someone gives me chocolate I just give it to the kids :). That is funny you definatelly wouldnt think church would be the place for such temptation :).

My day went okay yesterday . I ended up eating a brownie (I made them for the kids a couple days ago). Oh well at least I made it a few days without one and I didnt eat the whole pan (I really wanted to ) .
Have a great day everyone !!!!
fld

pong86 11-10-2008 05:43 PM

good afternoon!

congrats veggie and fld on stopping on after just one treat. those are definitely accomplishments in my book!

pretty good day for me, so far. i think i'm doing much better in terms of portion control. i think we all are, actually! i think i'm gonna try the Gillian Michaels 30-day Shred work out video. my roommate has the DVD, and i think i'm up for the challenge. i'm trying to get my boyfriend to do it with me so i have someone to do it with. i heard it's pretty intense. i'll keep you posted on how it goes.

jp

VeggieGirl1 11-11-2008 09:36 AM

Morning everyone

Good job fld20 - one brownie is infinitely better than the whole pan!

JP - good luck with the exercise video. I too have heard its pretty demanding, so be strong:carrot::carrot:

Today started out well, exercise and a good breakfast, but I have that nagging feeling that today might be a problem...you know how some days you just feel like somethings brewing on the eating front and it works at you all day till you give in...well, I don't want to give in:mad: and I just have to keep reminding myself of that....wish I knew how to stop the nagging before it starts:p

Take care,

Veggie

No Binge Days Till New Years: 16/18

pong86 11-11-2008 11:49 AM

good morning!

veggie, i know exactly what you mean about the nagging eating-bad feeling. i feel like i get it almost every day, especially because my roommate has junk food everwhere and eats it all the time. and another thing is that the people who live across from me in my apartment are constantly cooking highly aromatic food, at 10:00 at night, nonetheless, when i'm desperately trying to convince myself to not eat! i just have to keep reminding myself of my goal and/or how i would feel after i give in to my craving. or i try to keep myself busy so i won't think about it, because i realized i tend to eat when i'm bored. but if it still won't go away, i allow myself to have a little bit of what it is i'm craving, which is hard in itself. so if i want a piece of chocolate, i'll open the pack, break of a piece, put the rest away immediately, eat the piece slowly, and drown it all down with a glass of water. finally, i don't beat myself up about it after because that just gets me more depressed. Instead, i feel good about the fact that i was able to only eat a piece of the chocolate instead of the whole thing. hope this helps a little.

my day is going well so far. pretty good eating. i guess my biggest issue right now is wanting to eat or getting hungry before bed. i tend to eat dinner around 6-7 p.m., but i usually go to bed around midnight. so there's a good amount of time in between for me to get hungry and i'm not sure what would be best to eat, if i should, at that time. any tips?

started my first day of the 30-day Shred yesterday. going well, so far. about to do my second day. :)

jp

fld20 11-11-2008 06:22 PM

Hi Everyone -

Veggie -That nagging feeling can be hard . I usually give a little just like the other night with the brownie or I know I'm really going to cave hard later and I will eat the whole pan :)

Jp- Why dont you try some fruit or such befor bed . I usually save about 200 calories for a late night snack . And i'll usually have a piece of fruit or a banana smoothie or occasionally a slimfast . Congrats on starting the 30 day shred .

My days going okay . I havent had a lot of time between working at my moms , taking the baby to the doctor ( he now has bronchiatus yeah :( )
going to parent teacher conference and finding out they believe my oldest is color blind and grocery shopping . But I havent eaten a bunch of junk so thats a good now if I can squeeze in some exercise.Hope evryones days going well .

fld, sounds like you're going though a lot, but good job on eating well through it. if you are able to slip in some exercise, it might help you relax a little to take your mind off things for a little bit. feel free to vent here if you need to or if you need any support we're here for you. i hope you're kids are doing well.

VeggieGirl1 11-12-2008 02:44 PM

Good afternoon everyone,

Wow jp, sounds like you are really on the exercise bandwagon...great job:D

As for the eating before bed, when I'm really desparate, I chew a wad of sugarless gum...I don't really like to, because most gums (even non sugarless) have some form of artificial sweetner, and most of them give me terrible headaches if I eat too much...but sometimes, just knowing I can have the gum, and keeping my mouth occupied with it for a while, staves off any bad eating...I am a huge yogurt eater, and sometimes, when the gum isn't enough, I will eat one of the really small portion yogurts (4 0z), and that's enough...

Fld- sorry to hear about your son...is this the same child that had the ecoli battle? Hope he's better today....

I did grocery shopping too today...I may have done a bad thing..:(...remember when I told you about my victory over the peppermint i/c...well, today it was on sale, and when i bought the vanilla ice cream for my daughter, yes I admit, I bought the peppermint for myself (no one else will eat it)...so, here's the thing...a "serving" is only 110 calories, and very little fat (this is the Edy's slow churned lite i/c)...that amount of calories is fine...really not much more than in a decent sized apple or banana which I often have for desert...the problem is how do I keep from binging on it:devil:
I really feel like I have to overcome the one slip leads to a roll down the hill mentality and by never allowing myself stuff like this, when I do indulge, its oh well, may as well have a free for all...so I deliberately bought it, hoping to learn that having a little of what I like is okay...

yikes, sorry to have gone on so long..:o...wish me luck...;)

good evening!

not so great eating today. i was doing well until i went to class and we had a potluck dinner with dishes from different cultures, like mexican, russian, persian, hmong, and jewish... and they were all really good and i was starving! which is not a good thing with potlucks. so i had a little bit of everything... but i didn't feel over-stuffed. so... i guess that's the silver-lining? yikes... good thing i planned to work out tonight!

veggie, good luck with the ice-cream. 110 calories per serving isn't terrible. i think it is important to be able to learn portion control and not to completely deprive ourselves of things we like to eat. if we completely deprive ourselves, it may just push us off the weight-loss/healthy lifestyle wagon. i guess it's just a matter of finding the right balance. :)

fld, i hope you and your kids are doing well. hang in there.

My evening went pretty well I didnt pig out and I worked out so all in all a pretty good day !

Good morning everyone

fld - Glad to hear your son is better...hopefully he's had his quota of illnesses for the year! or at least the holiday season...

jp - sounds like you did okay...they say that variety of foods is often the biggest problem for dieters, that if you give people a wide ranging buffet, versus a buffet with fewer items, that people will eat less from the less varied array...so I think you did fine, particuarly in avoiding that uncomfortable stuffed feeling

Sounds like you both are doing well with the exercise part of the program...keep it up ladies...we can do it :carrot:

Oh, I did have one serving of the ice cream last nite...it was really good, and I honestly didn't want more...now, if I can only continue in that vein....oh well, one day at a time, right?

Take care,

pong86 11-14-2008 12:03 AM

hi,

not so great day today. was running late this morning, so when i was driving out of my apartment's underground parking, i turned too sharp and drove over a boulder that my apartment complex has scattered around randomly, for decorative purposes? i don't know, but now i have a pretty bad dent on the bottom/side of my car, which wouldn't be such a big deal, but some of the paint chipped off too. and with winters in Wisconsin with snow and salt, i would be battling rust if i don't get it fixed. i'm really frustrated cuz i can't really afford that right now, but i also can't afford rust on my car that can spread and get even worse. so, as a result, i ate badly. fried chicken (1 breast and 1/2 wing) and french fries :(

veggie, congrats on the ice-cream! i knew you could do it!

fld, hope you're doing well!

i'm gonna go do an exercise video and work out my stresses away, even though it's 11:00 at night.

jp

VeggieGirl1 11-14-2008 09:48 AM

Good morning all,

Jp - don't beat yourself up about the food...that's a stressful thing dealing with car repairs, and you had the right attitude about doing the exercise video to work off the anxiety, so good for you:carrot:

fld - glad to hear things are better with your son, and congrats to you for keeping on plan despite a hectic week...

As for me, I did okay again last night with the ice cream...one serving and I stopped.

Today, however, i had a problem with our computer that is totally stressing me out...one of those things that I will worry about, but can do nothing about, which of course makes it worse:mad: Its going to be a real challenge not to do my usual dive into bad stuff to alleviate the stress:devil:

Take care,

Veggie

Laura Anne 11-14-2008 12:57 PM

Hi, my name is Laura, and I would also like to check in with you guys on a daily basis. I'm very new to this whole concept of sharing about my weight losses and gains. I am 5'2" tall and weigh in at 160 lbs. I used to be really thin and now it seems I'm following in my mom's path with overeating and obesity late in life.

I know I can choose another path so here I am. Typically, I am great at getting started, but not good at consistency. In other words, when the going gets tough, I bail out!

This week I started walking 3 miles a day. In the past this form of excercise has been really effective. I guess I'm just afraid I'll hit a snag, make excuses and quit. Haven't really made a plan for diet yet. Still confused on which direction to take. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

fld20 11-14-2008 01:50 PM

Afternoon Everyone!!
Jp- Totally understandable with the car and bad eating. But atleast you worked out afterwards which is a good thing so congrats on that !!

Veggie- Congrats on the 1 serving of ice cream !!! That's a great thing . Computer stress is a pain ! I hope your able to stay out of the junk you've been doing great !!

Welcome Laura Anne !!!
It sounds like your off to a great start with your plan . Just keep working at it and remeber you can do it !! I have the bail out problem as well but amazinglly I've been working out daily for the last 6 week and if I can keep it up anyone can(I hate working out with a passion ). As for a diet plan I do calorie counting it works well for me .It's simple and your not as restricted as to what you can eat ( I hate being told I cant eat something :) )Good luck!!

My days going well so far no exercise yet but at least my eating is going well. The hubby just went to pick me up an exercise bike so that'll be something new :) .

Have a great day everyone !!!!
fld

VeggieGirl1 11-14-2008 02:44 PM

Good afternoon...yes, I'm on two times today,,,

Welcome Laura:D
I'd say you're off to a great start with the 3 miles of walking...do you do it on a treadmill or outside? I used to like to work outdoors in the summer, but its turned nasty here, so I confine my exercise to the gym now. As for a diet plan, I've done most of them :p, and have had varying degress of success losing...right now, I'm looking to maintain pretty much, my issue is more of the "disordered eating" variety...you know, a generally screwed up relationship with food:dizzy:

My advice on choosing a plan would be to first think about what things you really can't not eat...like, do u love meat or can u take it or leave it...if the latter, then you could easily do South Beach or Fat Smash or Superfoods Diet and you would hate Atkins...There's always calorie counting, like fld says, it allows you the freedom to do pretty much what you want within set limits. When i caloried counted, i used "the daily plate" website, which makes it really easy to track calories and exercise.
Best of luck to you, and check back often...

Fld - Lucky you getting an exercise bike of your own...do u know what kind it is? I would love to have one in the house so that I don't have to sit on the seat and use the controls that other sweaty gym members have, or be forced to watch ESPN or something like that at the gym while on the bike, but c'est la vie! By the way, how many calories do you aim for if I might be so nosy?

good evening!

thanks for the support! was having a pretty bad day yesterday and even woke up this morning bummed out, but i feel a lot better. i just try not to think about it and just get done what needs to be done. went to a bunch of auto body shops for quotes on how much repair cost would be, and i found a place with a reasonable price. so i just need to get it done before the snow comes, and not think about it anymore.

good eating today. 30-day shred challenge is going well too. i'm about to do Day 5 after i post here. wohoo! :)

welcome, welcome laura! sounds like you're doing well! as a newbie myself, my biggest struggle is food since i love food and eating food. so right now, i'm working on portion control. i'm trying to fill up on more fruits and veggies, rather than carbs. i love white rice, and i honestly can barely go a few days without it, so i've cut my portions to 1/2 cup at a time and lots of veggies to fill me up. and, of course, posting here on 3FC has really helped me A LOT, in terms of support and inspiration. good luck on your journey! congratulations on your decision towards a healthier you! and we are all here for you! :D

veggie, sorry about your computer stresses, but great job with the ice-cream! it's hard to stay away from food when stressed, as i experienced last night! but you can do it! stay strong!

fld, wohoo on the new exercise bike! i would love an elliptical or treadmill of my own; someday down the road. hope your kids are doing well!

I'm gonna join in with you guys too! ^_^
This week has not been too bad... I have to say I've had many temptations of BAD food... I had such a hard time not buying kettle chips the other day.
I'm proud I haven't messed up yet with that... I usually give in pretty easily.
I want to go to the gym more, maybe at least 2-3x a week. I'm trying to go at least once for the moment.
I went to the gym tonight and I weighed myself. I lost 5lbs! Very exciting now I'm down to 230lbs... that 220LBS that seemed so far away at 265LBS now seems closer then ever. I LOVE all you guys even being on this site a week I feel so motivated and happy to help others too!
Lets hang in there guys, we can do it!!! ^_^

fld20 11-14-2008 10:30 PM

Eveneing Everyone !!!

Veggie - I'm not sure what kind it's an older air resitance one with the moving arms . I'm working on slowlly turning the shop into a small home gym .With as much stuff as the hubby will allow .So far I have the bike and a bowflex and now I just want a treadmill. I'm way to shy and paranoid to go to the gym :) . Calories I try to stay right at 1200 anything over and i gain . I think my metabolism is a bit messed up from my eating habits a few years ago.

Jp- Sorry your day started out not so great but atleast you made the best of it . And at least you found a reasonable quote . I'm lucky my father in-law does body work and painting so all I have to pay for is parts :).Great job on eating right and on working out !!!!

Satisfaction- Welcome !!! And great job on the 35lb !!

fld

VeggieGirl1 11-15-2008 10:00 AM

Good morning everyone!

:welcome2: Satisfaction....And congrats on your 35 pound lost...How did you do it? Glad you joined us; check back often...

JP - Good job on the day 5 of the shred video:carrot: Is it as tough as people say?

Fld - 1200 calories; that's hard to do, but I hear you about the screwed up metabolism thing...Sounds like you're putting together a nice work out space...as for being shy about the gym, I don't go to a big fitness center...we live in an apartment building, and we have a gym in the basement...its nicely equipped, and has two tvs, but its generally not too busy, so I don't really feel self conscious; the only exception is when people come in with their trainers...I always feel like the trainer is looking at me, inwardly laughing at my weight training form:p

Well I avoided bad eating due to the computer stress...and, I again had my one portion of i/c last nite...This is really so new for me, to allow myself to eat a small portion of something that I consider a "bad food"...So far, I haven't wavered, but today I am starting to worry about what this might do to my maintenance efforts...I know rationally that I'm not really consuming any more calories, and that the most important thing for me right now is to eat like a normal person (or as normal as any woman can be around food), but I feel that nagging voice getting louder..the one that says cut it out, go on a restrictive plan again:blah:...Help me to shut that voice up...it always leads to a binge:devil:

Take care,

Veggie

good morning!

welcome Satisfaction! great job with the 35lb loss so far! keep it up and we're here for you! and please do tell how you lost the weight! :)

fld, a mini-gym and an auto body shop?! wowee! that's everything i need right now :D hope your day is going well!

veggie, great job with the ice-cream portions! i totally understand about the nagging voice, but i do think it's important to teach ourselves to not necessarily deprive ourselves of things we like to eat. instead, have it within reason and in the right proportion. so i think you're doing really well with that! just try not to listen to the voice, and hopefully it should go away. or try to counteract it by telling it you're proud of yourself for only having that one portion.

as for me, good day so far. i joined the fitday.com website to track my food/calorie intake. i've been writing down everything i eat, but it doesn't seem to be helping me much, maybe i'm not doing something right... so i decided to try fitday.com. 30-day Shred video was pretty intense the first few times i did it. yesterday being day 5, i felt like i improved a lot from the first day. the strength part of the video is the toughest for me. i like the circuit form of the video, since i tend to get bored pretty quickly when i have to do a certain move for too long, so that's nice especially since i have to do the same video for 10 days straight. but overall, i think it's pretty good.

jp

Morning everyone !!!

Veggie - A gym in the basement that would be so nice ! I dont think any of the apartments around here have anything like that .Though I dont think I could do anyone looking at me . I like the privacy of my shop no one to see me but the hubby and the kids :) :congrat: on eating so well yesterday !! That nagging voice can be hard when it's pushing to lose weight . But you just need to keep reminding yorself that your not gaining weight on your maintance plan and your happy at your weight . Not sure how much that'll help but it's my plan for later .I hope your days going great !! :)

anyway, just a couple of questions:

1. so fiber is supposed to be good when trying to lose weight, right? i don't get enough on my daily diet, so would using fiber supplements like FiberOne be beneficial? has anyone tried that?

2. i'm trying to drink more water cuz i definitely don't drink enough. so, i'm trying to figure out how to squeeze in the recommended daily dose in my days without feeling like i'm drowning in water!

all for now, hope everyone is having a good day. :)
