Question Quick Question

I've been exercising in the morning before eating anything. Walking actually.

Well, this morning it was incredibly hot outside (like 96 degrees) and I have asthma and faint when I become overheated so I'm waiting until this evening to get my walk in.

Does it matter that I ate first and am walking afterwards?

Or should I stick with morning before I eat?

Doesn't really matter either way. Figure out a schedule that works for you.

I don't think it matters what time of day you exercise, as long as you do!

I ate a large dinner last night and then immediately went jogging. I don't like doing that, but I got home later than normal and was starving. I think it only matters if you feel uncomfortable exercising just after eating. Some people don't. Personally, I try to avoid it.

Either way! Some recommend that you eat 1/2 hour before exercise, preferably a food with protein. But it's better to get a walk in than not get a walk in.

I've heard conflicting reports on this. I've heard better to workout on an empty stomach because then you're burning fat stores to give you energy...then on the flip side of the coin, i've heard to eat first to give your body energy for your workouts. I think you just have to do whatever is best for you and your time schedule. I usually work out on a pretty empty stomach because of when i can get to the gym. I eat lunch at noon or 1pm, then have a yogurt snack at 4:30 pm and then hit the gym at about 6pm. So...that's how i do it. But whatever is best for you. I don't think i'd want to do any heavy duty cardio with a belly full of food though.

I think it's an individual choice. For me personally, I can't exercise after I eat; I always feel like I'm going to throw up if I do.

This seems like the perfect opportunity to remind folks how quickly we can become dehydrated in the summer heat. Make sure you're drinking water!

I seem to have more hypoglycemic episodes in the hot weather too. Don't really know if there's any science to that. Could just be because I'm more active.

Things is, from all I've learned is....Calories in must be < than calories out, no matter what time it happens.

I've never had it make a difference, so I'd go with what feels best for your body. If you feel nauseous exercising right after you eat, don't eat right before. If you get dizzy if you don't exercise, then eat! Figure out what works for you - for overall burn, it shouldn't make any difference.

These days, I do my treadmill running in the morning (I get up at 5:30 am to fit it in) and so there is no way I can anything prior to that. I always need a considerable time between a meal and exercise, otherwise it just feels like the food in my stomach is weighing me down. I am fine while I am on the treadmill (one hour) but then I get quickly very hungry within 30 or minutes or so. But by that time, I have already showered etc. so i am ready to eat. I sip water while I am on the treadmill - I usually drink 1/2 litre during that time.
Do what feels best for you.
