Question Heartburn??

I need some help on this issue. I'm a little at a loss of what to do about heartburn since right now I'm miserable. I've been doing really well on eating right and being OP, tonight was the first night in a long time we ordered out pizza and buffalo wings. I was really good too on my portion sizes and only had one small slice of pizza and two small buffalo boneless wings and now I'm miserable. I've tried tums, drinking some milk. Nothing seems to work and my romantic evening with my hubby cuddling watching tv together has gone down the tubes. So what do you do when you have heartburn? I also have issues with acid reflux problems so I usually have a bland diet and I know tonight's food wasn't exactly bland. Can heartburn also cause chest pain too since I'm experiencing that as well?

Ok, I really hate to be an alarmist ... but heartburny feelings with chest pain CAN = heart attack. My mom died because she ignored "acid reflux" and mid chest pain for 3 days and it turned out she was having a continuous, 3-day heart attack.

Please please please please please go to the hospital. Please. If it's just heartburn/acid reflux then you've just suffered a small amount of embarassment. If it's not, you've just saved your life.

I've battled with stomach problems, etc most of my life, been on probably every thing known to man and the only thing that has helped me was Nexium. It works for me, its a prescription. But first, like PhotoChick said, be sure to get yourself checked out, just to be safe. My cousin, who is younger than I am, (I'm 33) had a very mild heart attack and his symptoms was the worst heartburn he's ever had. So luckily they did go to the ER!! So like Photo said, go and if its just acid reflux, then so be it, they can give you something for it and you can go on home. But its better to be safe than sorry!

Good Luck!!!

It sounds to me like heartburn because of its appearing after the pizza and wings. My belief is that some foods are not meant to be eaten except in small amounts. Pizza will give me terrible heartburn--something about the combination of greasy meat with carbohydrates is just sure to produce a problem. Tomato sauce of course makes it worse.

I do not think the solution is to take some drug and just keep eating those foods! I've learned to avoid overindulging in foods that give me heartburn--usually they are foods that aren't great nutritionally anyway.

If I do find myself with a problem I like the Mylanta that is calcium based. I stay away from antacids that contain aluminum.

Oddly, drinking cola with some foods helps them to digest.

I have terrible reflux, and I've been reduced to taking Nexium. If I'm careful not to eat too close to bedtime, I can get away with not taking it. (hate taking too many meds)
As a temporary measure, try taking a teaspoon of cider vinegar. It burns going down, but your acid reflux will be gone for the night.

But please get checked out by your doctor!

I used to be constantly plagued with heartburn but since my body has gotten used to being fed better almost never hve it anymore.

The combination of high carbs with high fat (Pizza is a good example) definitely used to do it for me, too.

Try a tsp of Baking soda in a little water . . . you burp up a storm (you'll scare small animals ) for a few minutes but it always used to work for me.

I hope you are feeling better today, can you please post an update? I was worried when you mentioned chest pain.
I have acid reflux myself, though it seems to be under control with my "healthy" eating (and smaller portions probably have a lot to do with it).
Speaking of pizza - surprisingly enough, I would not have heartburn after eating meaty pizza but I almost always had bad heartburn after having Pizza Pizza's Amore pizza - it is on a whole wheat crust (quite thin, I have to say), with pesto instead of tomato sauce, red onions, roasted red peppers, goat cheese and spinach. All in all, a very healthy pizza (there is not a whole lot of the goat cheese - definitely less than the amount of cheese on a regular pizza). I always ended up with heartburn after that - though I have to admit that was in the old days with my ex-BF and between the two of us, we finished the whole pizza easily. I no longer eat that way.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and concern. After I posted my question I started throwing up since my stomach was so upset too. I feel MUCH better this morning but my throat feels pretty raw to say the least now. Like I said before I'm able to control my acid reflux problems by having a pretty bland diet and not really using spicy seasonings and etc on my food. I didn't expect my body to react that way-especially so violently heh after not having something like that in a long time but it did and now I know. I like spicy food but my stomach/body just doesn't like it :-). Thanks for the concern and I will be going to get some mylanta as well just in case for next time but hopefully there won't be a next time since I won't be ordering pizza or buffalo wings again. If I want pizza I'll make my own healthy and grease-less version. :-) Thanks all for the concern!

I have acid reflux, or "GERD", also. I have learned the hard way to stay away from those "acidic" type foods, else I bear the pain.

I have been on Aciphex for about a year now. It's good meds. I don't have to eat "bland" anymore, but I still don't get crazy with pizza/wings/etc. I mostly avoid alcohol/chocolate & other trigger foods. I'd rather miss the yumminess than deal with the pain!

Oh, and the last time I lost weight & was a happy/healthy weight, my acid reflux magically disappeared. Imagine that!

Glad you're feeling better!!

The same thing happened to me this weekend. I have acid reflux as well. Saturday night I was at a friend's (staying the night) and the heartburn was the worst EVER. But then, it got to the point where I thought I was going to throw up. I ended up being really sick all night long. Maybe it was just a stomach bug? Thats what mine was.

Modkittn-so sorry to hear you were sick too this weekend!

Nexium has been recommended to me but it's expensive for me so I use prilosec instead from time to time and I think it's probably time for me to do another round of that since it has been awhile. Plus I really do enjoy cooking some foods and have been abstaining from them and my husband is starting to complain about the bland food I've been cooking as well. Is it just me or does anybody else suffer more cravings when they go on a more bland diet? Since I have noticed that for myself. I'm thinking I'd rather get back on medication and cook my own healthier versions (reduced spiciness but just enough) of not so bland foods so that I can enjoy some of what I eat at least.
