  • Right now my BMI is 45.9 - so that makes me morbidly obese. My weight range is 125-164, so I split the difference and my goal is 140. My body frame is on the small size, even though I am tall. I also based my goal on my mother; she has never had problems with her weight and hovers right around 150. She is 2 inches taller than me and her frame is larger. So I figure my goal of 140 is just about right. The last time I was 140 was when I was in 7th grade! I have been the same height since then as well, so I think that's about right. Of course, I also want to gain some muscle, so that goal is somewhat loose; I know that my muscle may make my weight higher. That's okay with me, I just want to be fit and healthy.

    I think the BMI is ridiculous, for the reasons already mentioned. It doesn't take into account muscle mass, general body composition, lifestyle, fitness level etc.!
  • I am currently at 35.9. To be 'normal', I will have to weigh 179 altho my BMI will be at the top of the 'normal' chart then. Sigh.

    I agree with you that BMI is an awful way for people to measure themselves.
    my BMI is 31.4...that's "obese" ..I am comfortably fitting into size 10s and 12s at every store i go to..my measurements make me feel merely "overweight" I'm in the process of reevaluating my goals because 135 is more than likely too small for my frame with the muscle i've put on, even though i was 135 in high school and 135 would put me in the high end of "normal" .. i think that if i can reach 135 it's going to be way too skinny at the rate that i'm dropping inches, though i know that that will slow down eventually.
  • The BMI scales are purposely broad to try to take into account different body frames. That said, they are still not the best measure. At most they are a rough guide.

    Certainly most NFL football players would come out as "obese" on the standard BMI scale, so it's easy to see that BMI is not a measure of fitness.
