My secret santa person (the one I am giving to ) listed all food items as what she likes to receive. Cookies, chocolate, candy. She is a nice healthy weight, neither skinny nor overweight. I baked cookies for her and had to hurry them out the door before I ate too many.
Buckeyes are creamy peanut butter balls almost completely coated in a soft chocolate, they melt in your mouth and are sooooooooo goooooood! Ugh. The only place I can find them around here are Cracker Barrell. I think I would die if I ever had them fresh and homemade.
You can find them at Cracker Barrel, eh? I've never seen a Cracker Barrel down here This is Gator Country, so everyone's supposed to hate the Buckeyes and everyone else...
Does anyone want to play secret santa and send me some?
I can't wait to eat tons of sweet, horribly unhealthy Christmas treats.
I have a friend that always gets one of those sausage/cracker baskets for me at Christmas time....he is 59 years old...probably the sweetest man ever.....he gives me this gift every year because, from years past, it was one of the nicest gifts he got when he was younger....and poor...to him it is special...it is special for him to give it to me...it is special for me to receive it! Do I like it?...not so much...do I look forward to getting it? Yep! Because I look forward to seeing my friend...not because of the sausage ~of course that goes in the trash and it would break his heart if he knew I didn't like it...but I will never tell him...why break down his joy.
Gary, that makes me what to cry. If someone gave me something that meant a lot to them personally, it makes me want to keep it and see how they saw it originally. Of course, I'd probably be one of the few that would keep it and eat it because I can (while I'm still young and fit) but if my health were in hazardous condition, I'd re-gift it without telling him, but still appreciate it! But man... that's just so sweet

I've never tried store-bought buckeye balls - I can't imagine they would be as good as homemade (most things aren't).
They are VERY easy to make, if you want to give them a try for yourself - they are well worth the effort:
Combine the melted butter or margarine, powdered sugar, peanut butter and the vanilla together and mix well. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. Roll into balls and place on waxed paper.
Melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a double boiler. Use a toothpick to dip balls into the melted chocolate, leaving a small uncovered area to make the balls look like buckeyes. Refrigerate until firm.
Thanks for the recipe, 1TiredGradStudent! I see now that I must never make them...
Shane, it is not that those in Gator Nation and Bulls Nation hate everyone else... we have great sympathy for those less fortunate.
As for obsolete traditions, I'd like to see the tradition that "college students have to be drunk for three days when there's a big game" come to an end.

And I'd VERY MUCH like to see the tradition where I can make those buckeye balls and eat as many as I'd like and not gain an ounce.
Of course, I'd like to see the college students not be drunk for three days too come a big game.
We have a tradition of family getting together every year before Christmas to make Buckeyes and other candy, cookies and treats. We really enjoy the comraderie and fun. My Buckeyes also have graham cracker crumbs, coconut, & ground nuts in them & they are to die for. I have to mail a bunch of them to my daughter in college every year and she savors them one at a time to make them last.
The people I work with (nurses) gobble up treats so fast it would make your head spin and yes, many of them are overweight. The last few years, instead of food gifts, many of the physicians have been giving us stuff like Bath & Body Works lotions, etc. Much friendlier on the waistline and everybody likes it.
EEEEE 1TiredGradStudent, thanks for the recipe!! I'll DEFINITELY have to make them... YUM!
Robin, I'd LOVE to eat as many of those Buckeye Balls as I want and not gain an ounce. I bet ONE ball has, like, 800 calories.
And Jay, I'd like to see that tradition end, too! Most of the college students here irk me... I've been hit and almost hit by cars while biking more times than I can count due to their recklessness
I wish that was true in my family. I am dreading the Thanksgiving food. There will be an entire table full of sweet stuff. not to mention deep fried turkey and ham and mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. I will have to use ultimate will power. Ahh, I will just try to watch lots of football instead!
