That is great. It is just another tool to let us see how we are doing. Nothing is written in stone when it comes to the choises we make. We have this today we don't have it tomorrow if it is high in something we don't want the body to have all the time.

    Raf
You are right I love the site. I would have tuna everyday but that just isn't good for me lol. Have to have a bit of variety.
  • I put in my food for today into fitday (today was a pretty standard day for me) and my percentages came up as...

    Fat 16%
    Protein 17%
    Carbs 67%
  • Nelie
Seems to me the fat should be a bit higher. I could be wrong.
  • Shy,

From what I've read, Fat should be no more than 20% and somewhere betwen 10-20% so I fall right in that range and that is where I aim to be.

Of course people do find their own ranges but for health reasons, 10-20% is a pretty good range. Below 10% is a bit too low and someone may experience problems.
  • It looks like there are many fitday addicts.. and Iīm oficially one lol!

    Today my %s were:
    Fat:12
    Carbs:53
    Proteins: 35

I know iīm a little down on the fat but I went from 6 or 7% to 12.. thatīs not bad! And I had chiken today instead of tuna fish and it was yumii and changed my veggies too (I tend to eat everyday the same and I know itīs not good, so Iīm trying to make changes, little by little).
Recently I bought a digital kitchen scale (I love it) and Iīm amazed how much cabbage you get for 100 grs, it was a HUGE plate! (So I changed the lettuce! yey) and had spinach too and tomatoes!

I get a little scared that if a eat a lot I wonīt lose weight, I know itīs stupid, but itīs something hard for me, and telling you this is helping!

Nelie, this question is absolutely ignorant, but protein looks low. I mean, I have no idea about this at all, but just wanted to ask..

How much water do you drink?? Sorry I keep asking questions but Iīm new to this healthy lifestyle!
  • Raf

How many calories did you take in to get those percentages?
  • Nelie
there are different percentages depending on where you look and who you talk to. The nutritionist I talked to told me 20 to 30% and never under 20. Guess it just depends on how people feel about it.
  • Yesterday I was a little low on the calories... 1.100! (Are you pshych or what? is that the correct word?) I usually have 1200, but yesterday I was lower, but one day 100 cals low I donīt think matters or it does?

Today itīs two weeks since I started my healthy eating journey! I swear I never had stayed eating well for so long! I know itīs not much, but for me itīs a big accomplishment! and Iīm happy! And I had a small banana at breakfast today to celebrate lol (with my milk and toast and quesillo)
  • Rafaella,

I'm going by a whole foods vegan diet and from what I read, our bodies don't need a lot of protein although some people like to eat more protein which is fine.

    Shy,

I actually never heard anything about never going below 20%. Most heart healthy diets are below 20% as is the diet I'm following which says over 20% is too much fat. Of course, there are various sources and people get their information from different places, that is why there is no perfect percentage for everyone
  • I don't know about the rest of y'all, but "percentages" always throw me off anyway. I don't know how much I'm eating of what until I've eaten it. (Thank the diet gods for FitDay!) But now that I've been logging my food for so long, I'm finally starting to be able to "eyeball" certain things. For instance, I no longer have to pour a cup of cereal into a measuring cup to know that it's a cup.

And I've always thought that "percentage wise", whether you're dieting or not, it should be a daily consumption of:

    40% carbs
    30% protein
    30% fat

But wow.... 30% fat?!?!?!?!?! Makes me wanna barf just thinking about it!
  • Hey Beach Patrol,

30% fat, if you're eating 1300 calories, would be 390 fat cals, or around 40 grams of fat. That's not a whole lot! A tablespoon of olive oil has 14 grams of fat; so does 1 ounce of almonds (22 almonds). So just those two together would be 28 grams--getting close to 3/4 of the grams. A whole egg has 5 grams.

    Remember, it's percentage.

Fat is not the enemy--it's just that most people who are overweight have been eating too much of it, and too much carbohydrate.

You're absolutely RIGHT Jay! - and that's why I said that "percentages" throw me off. Seeing it in print like that, makes it look like more than it is, to me. So instead of trying to keep the ratio of carbs/fat down... I just try to keep the ratio of protein up. It's easier for me that way.
  • Right now... I'm at 16% fat... 54% carbs.... and 30% protein. I've had breakfast & a mid-morning snack. After lunch, those numbers will change & look more like this:

    24% fat
    47% carbs
    29% protein

& even more different after my mid-afternoon snack. And WAY MORE different after dinner time. I tend to get my carbs/fat more in the morning, & more protein during the day.

No I don't think that matters much. Don't want to be to low on the calorie front but as long as you stick to your general guide lines you shoud be fine. I am under from time to time too. When I get the sinus thing nothing at all tastes good and trying to make myself eat just hurts my tummy.

Wish I knew where Heather and I both saw the different fat amounts because we both fround places that said fat way over 20% oh well doesn't really matter. Just depends on what kind of food life style a person wants to have.

    Beach
Funny you posted that. I just saw those exact figures on a site this morning.
Mine tend to stay around around just that. I tryed 20%-50%-30% but just couldn't get protein anywhere near that. Doc said what I was doing was good.

    Fat 25%
    Carbs 59%
    Protein 16 %

Pretty much right where the doc told me to be. She said since a lot of carbs are from fruits I could go less on the fat and more on the carbs which is what I have done. The nutritionalist said about the same thing.

I also talked to my mother since my dad was on a diet plan for his heart. What I am doing is right in those same amounts. Still would like to get the fats down just a hair and the carbs down just a hair but that would mean giveing up fruits and you are to have 2 or 3 servings a day of them which tends to mean carbs.
  • Rennie -- Most of the FDA guidelines seem to recommend fat %s from 20-35% for most people. If you google something like fda fat guidelines you will find the recommendations posted many places. They also note frequently that saturated fat should be (I think) no more than 10% of your overall calories.

It sounds like Nelie is doing a different kind of diet which may be designed for a particular population of people. I don't want to speak for her!

It seems the current thinking is that if you don't have any heart issues, it's recommended you have 20-35% of calories coming from fat. However, I am not an expert on this topic. I just know what I read in the guidelines.
