Have you ever been to a salad bar in rural minnesota. A tiny bit of anemic iceberg lettuce and some wilty cucumbers and carrots. macaroni salad, potato salad, tuna salad, cheese, croutons, bacon bits, ham, ambrosia, etc. etc.
Dressings are french, ranch, thousand and blue cheese
Some peolpe think if it comes in a salad it must be healthy.
I'm from rural minnesota...i've never seen a salad bar like this
I LOVE ruby tuesday...it has the freshest, most delicious salad bar!!
Kaplods Well you do have to work to that point and even I'm not to that point. I do try to exercise as if I was a 150-200 lb girl though rather not exercising which is something you would expect of a 250-300 lb girl.
I agree! There's almost a social brainwashiong about what people of certain sizes can or should be doing, especially in public. I'm really trying to ignore the social "rules," and the nasty little voice inside my head that tells me I can't or shouldn't do something (especially when the biggest reason is that I'll look ridiculous).
Salad bars do me in because of perceived value. I just can't go in and spend $8 on an appropriate size, nutritionally sound salad. I feel like I'm getting ripped off because I could make a better salad at home for probably $2. I always end up going back up and picking out something bad just so I feel like I've gotten my money's worth. I try to avoid salad bars.

Now that is MORE food for thought. Ooops. Should I say "salad" for thought?

I USED to look at it that way. What I had to understand was that I COULD make the salad cheaper at home, but then I'd have to eat salads every day for a week to keep from throwing out all the ingredients. Plus, there's all the chopping/cutting. I'd need to buy tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, onions, etc. etc. to get the salad I like. There, it's all done for me. So I figure the price into the prep rather than into the amount I need to eat.
I have trouble with salad bars, though I really do love them.
I think I'm doing really well and eating reasonably healthy, with lots of veggies. But then I just have to have some chicken, eggs, pickles, and green olives, to fill out the salad. Not that any of those things is bad for me. I just end up with more than I would normally want to eat for a meal.
The salad bar at my work/school place (University of California) has a really really good salad bar (if not the other sections of the cafeteria)...They have atleast 3 fat free dressings available always with separate cups and lids for those who want it by the side...The veggie and meat sections are separate... !
I love the salad bar we have in our local supermarket. They do carry the pasta salads, croutons, etc. etc. but I only take the lettuce, a sprinkle of red cabbage, about 6 olives (green & black combined), hard boiled egg, mushrooms, and some broccoli or cauliflower flowerets. I usually bring it home and put my own dressing on it and add a sprinkling of cheddar cheese. It's delish!!
