As you can see from my signature, I have been doing well with weight loss and find myself getting more and more disgusted with meat every day.
That, and the societal issues surrounding the world's ability to afford to produce a lot of meat.
One question [and I am researching] is that mantra that you need a lot of protein to preserve muscle mass. I can meet the US RDA for the essential amino acids under a more vegetarian approach (using cron o meter to log which takes into account all protein sources) but with a low calorie diet (about 1200 calories) it is tight. But all the "gurus" say I would need either 90 grams of protein a day (30% of calories) or 160 grams (yikes) based on weight. Full vegetarian I am looking more at about 50-60 grams based on about 1200 calories a day.
What is the response here? I do know a certain number of vegans who are gaunt and not robust at tall with very low muscle mass but I also know there are vegan athletes though undoubtedly not on a low calorie weight loss diet.
Suggestions? Lacto ovo is my target for now.
