What are your plans? Will you go for a turkey substitute?
I've never tried tofurky.
Last year I bought Celebration Roast by Field Roast and it was yummy! We also tried the Hazelnut En Crute and it was out of this world, but was also 100 calories more than the celebration roast.
Mom learned to make her cornbread dressing and gravy vegetarian, using vegetarian chicken broth and you really can't tell the difference.
We have 2 Thanksgiving dinners, one for my family and one for DH's. DH's mom always has vegetarian options for me, so I eat at her house. My family does the typical fat and meat-laden traditional dinner, so DH eats at their house.
Most years, my MIL has a tofurkey. It's not bad, actually. Not something I'd want to eat often, but I appreciate her thoughtfulness so much.
I'm contributing a roasted veggie dish and a vegan pumpkin pie to each of the dinners, and likely VegNews' vegan mac & cheese to at least one dinner.
I'm hosting Thanksgiving for the first time ever (7 people-2 vegans, 3 vegetarians, 2 omnis) and it's going to be an all vegan Thanksgiving. I have 2 Tofurkeys which aren't my favorite, but my husband loves them. I'm also making chickpea cutlets from Veganomicon. They are delicious!!
I'll have all the usual side dishes, but I'm most excited about my sister's dessert. She and her husband recently went veggie and she's a fabulous cook, so she's veganized all her desserts. She's bringing carrot cake, cranberry oatmeal cookies and chocolate fondue!!
I might pick up a pumpkin pie just to keep it traditional.
I usually make my own seitan roast but last year after Thanksgiving, Tofurkey was on sale so I tried it and it was alright but nothing close to home made seitan. I also have a celebration roast in the fridge because it was recently on sale.
I'll make a bunch of other stuff, TBD. Although really, for Thanksgiving itself, we'll probably do nothing but we will be visiting my husbands parents and make them a vegan dinner. They aren't vegetarian but they like my cooking (and probably more that they don't have to cook ).
I'm making a pot pie, mashed taters (both recipes from a recent Vegetarian Times issue), roasted asparagus, salad, and a vegan pumpkin pie. Also spiced cider. Fairly simple!
I'm doing Thanksgiving lunch with the fam-damily, who teases me for being vegetarian. They won't have many options for me. I'll mostly eat starch and veggies there, in small amounts. xD We're doing dinner ourself for the first time! I guess my sweetheart's parents will also be here since we currently live together. But-- I'm very excited. I've prepared chickpea cutlets ahead of time (LOVE EM)! I was going to do a cauliflower mash instead of mashed potatoes as a healthier option, but I was too broke to afford the cauliflower and we already had a few potatoes. So we'll be doing the chickpea cutlets, mashed potatoes, vegetarian gravy, hawaiian rolls (I'm indulging even though they are soo soo preservative filled), and asparagus. MIL said she would be sharing some vegan stuffing with us. Simple, affordable, easy.
It's just my daughter and I this year. New city, we don't really know anyone to invite over. I picked up a Quorn roast for us and also came up with a recipe over the weekend that turned out AMAZING!
I don't know what to call it. It's kind of a nut loaf but also steamed like a seitan roast. A combo of the two ideas. I used raw hazelnuts, cashews and walnuts ground with carrots, zucchini and chickpeas. Several cloves of garlic, a dash of chili powder, a dash of poultry seasoning and a dash of sweet paprika. Then mixed in some cold water and wheat gluten to bind it, rolled in foil and steamed for an hour. The texture came out like meat loaf and it was sliced and served with mushroom gravy. Again, turned out amazingly good. Probably the best vegan dish I've had yet.
My company had a catered Thanksgiving feast for us today. There was an obscene amount of food! The funny part was my boss asking me a few times if I was going to get something to eat. Everyone else was like cockroaches on a spot of grease over the buffet. I told him I was in no hurry, since I don't eat meat the stuff that I do eat will still be there long after they've made the rounds. The vegetables always make it to the end
