Furhrman summarizes his diet by providing "Ten Easy Tips for Living with the Six-Week Plan"
Remember, the salad is the main dish; eat it first at lunch and dinner.
Eat as much fruit as you want, but at least four fresh fruits daily.
Variety is the spice of life, particularly when it comes to greens.
Beware of the starchy vegetable.
Eat beans or legumes every day.
Eliminate animal and dairy products.
Have a tablespoon of ground flaxseed every day.
Consume nuts and seeds in limited amounts, not more than one ounce per day. Eat lots of mushrooms all the time.
Keep it simple.
Yes, you can lose weight as a vegetarian! I was a vegetarian for six years and was my fittest and smallest (130 lbs, which is my goal again) during those years. Like everyone else said, chill on the dairy and instead eat a lot of BEANS and HUMMUS. Mmmm. . . so tasty too. . .
[I went back to eating meat after I went to visit the Rocky Mountains and was frightened at how poorly my body adapted to the higher elevation and the 30, count em, 30, bruises my boyfriend and I discovered over my body. Something wasn't right with my iron and protein intake, but that's because I was doing a poor job keeping healthy and being a veg at the same time. Didn't have enough time or resources. But you can do it! I kinda miss being a vegetarian although I don't think I can go back now --- bacon and the like has taken its hold on me. Haha but that's why I'm so damn fat now!! Damn succulent meat. . .]
I started a vegetarian diet about three months ago (with several cheats along the way, mind you!) and I love it. I lost weight initially, but all the cheese has brought me back up again. I don't want to go vegan, but I am trying to cut back on my cheese intake, and I don't drink cow's milk (Light Silk soymilk has less calories and more protein/calcium than skim milk!), while at the same time, being vegetarian basically forces you to get your day's worth of fruits and veggies. As far as carbs goes, I try to substitute whole grains for "empty carbs" like white bread and pasta, so at least you know you're getting your fiber.
Oh, and if you're vegetarian, it's essential that you take a multivitamin with iron in it! I suppose everyone should be taking their vitamins, not just vegetarians, but for us it really makes a noticeable difference in health!

The other thing beside iron that is important is B12. From the research I've done B12 is the one vitamin that a well rounded vegetarian diet lacks. I am working on going back to a vegetarian then vegan diet. When I was following it before I felt the best I ever felt, so I'm going to combine it with calorie counting for weight loss. But I have been taking a B12 supplement because blood work showed my B12 was low.
In the past I've only lost weight on the low carb diet. Low Carbing messed me up and killed my gallbladder. Reciently I put together a 1200 cal veg diet that includes Amy's Organic frozen meals. I've dropped some weight and am feeling better! I say 1200 because that's what nutrisystem & Jenny go by. I havn't been hungry and I am eating better then ever. Lots of veggies, fruits and some dairy. Everyone's system is different. But I have PCOS...Insulin resistance, that's why I did so good on low carb. I gained 20 lbs on weight watchers because I started eating sugar....I'm since stoped the sugar and am doing well!!
I know that even eating vegan I havent been losing as much weight as I could.
My problem is I am eating way too many carbs, to big of servings...
rice pasta bread etc.
I really need to go to a macrobiotic or raw food diet. I just need to get read up on some meal options. ..
SoulBliss - Would you be interested in posting something about your low carb diet? I am curious as I do tend to avoid super carby items. It'd be interesting to see a possible food list/example meals.
