Right gonna have to get creative with the oatmeal and the cottage cheese. I kinda liked the Kashi it just isn't filling. Oh well, could use it for packing valuables instead of polystyrene!!!

The funny thing is we have a solid base coffee table that I can't get under LOL ;) Stupid article really, seemed like a good idea at the time!!!!

I can't wait for lunch, there better be something worthy on the menu!!!

And if I lose weight this week on "free week" I'm gonna scream!!!!

YP - Sounds delicious - I'm going to try making it on Friday. Did you use any particular colour lentils? Would green ones be okay??
Yayyyy :carrot: I've been negotiating with DH and I've got him to agree to 2 meat free meals, 2 fish meals and 2 meals which are to be meat/chicken with beans added per week. The proviso is that we have at least one meal of a solid type red meat - and not so much salad. You never know, I might get him to commit to a fitness lifestyle plan yet!!

This next bit isn't so great just after talking about food, but does anyone have any idea why I feel nauseated just after weight training? Is it normal?

Frus - Thanks for the good idea about using dried fruit (I don't know why I never thought of that). Try just using quarter to half a teaspoon of cinnamon with a pinch of nutmeg instead of mixed spices in your oatmeal/cottage cheese mix, then let it stand for 10 minutes before eating. I had it at lunchtime mixed with diced pear, raisins and a tiny amount of grated ginger root and it was absolutely gorgeous - tasted just like cookie dough. My diabetic neighbour came round when I was making it and told me that cinnamon is good because there is research which shows it stabalises blood sugars.

2frustrated 03-07-2006 10:20 AM

Oooh that would be effluvia. It rocks! ;) Kidding.

It will pass. I used to feel sick after squatting heavy and there were a couple of kickboxing workouts after I started training heavy that I wanted to throw up. I think once your body gets used to being under a heavy load and working out hard it sorts itself out.

You might want to try and experiment with what you eat before you train, a little wholegrain snack like an oatcake might help. Or sometimes nothing is what you need. Also don't forget to drink. I always have a glass of squash handy between weights, but that's just me... It might make you worse, but remember to keep your fluids up anyway! :dizzy:

Sarah Ann 03-07-2006 10:24 AM

I'll try eating before weight training - up until now I have been working on the Hussman theory that I ought to try eat protein immediately after doing weights - so I've been working out just before lunch. On Thursday I'll try having something before I start. Yes, I found out the hard way about drinking water during a workout (the world started spinning and I nearly passed out!) I even take some with me when I'm walking the dogs now.

2frustrated 03-07-2006 10:35 AM

Instead of waiting eating lunch before weights, try just a small amount of food, sometimes too much can have the opposite effect. And yes some protein after weights is good too! Maybe take a bite or two of lunch, then finish lunch after... Sounds  but it might work!

Happy Birthday Veggie!

Sarah Ann - I used red split lentils, if I get time tonight or tomorrow I'll dig out the recipe book and give you proper instructions!

Work was really busy today so I ended up staying late, then I've come home and cooked a very complicated (for me) feast with three separate things on the go at once - brown rice (OK, so that's easy), spiced spinach and three bean curry. Lovely. I still need to get to the supermarket later tonight for a couple of essentials.

I was offered a charity place in the Great North Run today but had to turn it down :( I might have mentioned about the people I know who run a rugby charity? They've got 13 guaranteed places and are making a big event of it, paying for accomodation for the team, doing a kit, getting a RL "celeb" to run etc, but it's the week after Berlin so I can't do it :( I was impressed when the bloke messaged me to ask for advice about a couple of things as he never met me when I was really fat and seemed to assume I knew more about this running thing than maybe I do :D

And I'm down another pound :D :D

Mazarin 03-07-2006 03:48 PM

Happy Birthday Veggie!

2frustrated 03-08-2006 03:38 AM

YP can you post that recipe or CC it to me pls? I'm going to start trying new things :D

I applied for a place in the Great North Run in their ballot but I didn't get one. I'm starting to think it was quite lucky, since last night I calculated that I could be a brown belt by the time of the Great North Run if I get my arse in gear! ;)

I had cottage cheese and oats this morning with raisins and splenda and mixed spice. It was rather nice and very filling! :D

Sarah Ann 03-08-2006 04:57 AM

Morning!

I'm back early from my walk (I suppose it makes up for the extra long one yesterday). It was drizzelling as we left and slowly it turned in to a steady rain - it didn't bother me much but George doesn't like rain and when George has had enough he just sits down and refuses to move forward at all. At that point the only thing to do is return back the way we've come - any variation from the route and he just sits down again. I still managed 6.5 miles though. Fred, my other dog, doesn't mind the rain at all - DH says I ought to get George a waterproof coat and hat to match mine!

Nevermind, I'll do half an hour on the exercise bike later - they say cross training is good for you. Oh boy - the muscle ache from weight training crept up on me yesterday, especially the muscles down my sides.

We ought to start a recipe thread - I'm sure we've all got recipes that others would like to try. The American ones are nice but it can be difficult, expensive or impossible to get some of the ingredients over here. (To anyone reading this who has visited or lives in the US: I'd really love to know what Mrs Dash is!) :stir:

I've had a NSV - my favourite belt has gotten too big for me. I should be celebrating except that its the belt I use to hold up my size 24 walking jeans which are 2-3 sizes to big for me now. I refuse to buy 3 or 4 pairs of jeans just for walking on the moors until I know what size I'm going to end up at!!! DH says I look daft but I've seen teenage boys wearing baggy jeans about 5 sizes too big - so I'm probably in the height of fashion! ;)

2frustrated 03-08-2006 05:10 AM

You really need a "bling" chain to go with those baggy jeans ;)

A recipe thread would be excellent. I always get confused with pudding mix and cool whip :?:

kykaree 03-08-2006 05:12 AM

I dithched the Kashi and went back to the porridge this morning. I'm still hungry!!! I've been swimming this morning, it was lovely, and am going again tomorrow morning.

Nothing exciting to report, just another work day, sigh.

2frustrated 03-08-2006 05:27 AM

You might want to try an omlette for breakfast? Fills me up! Try omlette with a little bit of cheese and some veggies. That little bit of fat might be what you need. Do you drink plenty in the morning? I find I get dehydrated and that can make me think I'm hungry!

kykaree 03-08-2006 06:07 AM

I'm a bad girl, I don't drink enough in the morning, and I should try having more protein for breakfast!!! But I can't face an omlette at 5.30am, and Col would murder me for cooking at that hour!!!

I'll try and be better!!!

Sarah Ann 03-08-2006 06:38 AM

Ohhhhh - rumble, rumble - this thread is making me hungry today. I've got avocado, cottage cheese, raspberries and a big salad for my lunch today.

Kylie, how about making a frittata the day before and have it cold for brekkie. Frittata is a Monday thing in my house. My shopping is usually delivered on Tuesdays - so on Mondays (if I've got a fridge full of odd bits of veg and deli that we haven't eaten during the week) I make a huge frittata. Apart from the leftovers I usually dump in some strong cheese, onions, peppers, garlic, chopped sundried tomatoes, hot paprika, mixed herbs and 8 or 9 eggs. We eat it for brekkie, lunch or dinner (whenever) and Kevin takes some to work for his packed lunch for a couple of days. It usually works out at about one and a half eggs per portion. Economical and yummy!

I've been reading about that high intensity interval training thing - so I thought I'd try it out on the exercise bike - I'm feeling all wobbly now, like Bambi! Its not so much the high intensity bit thats a problem (I expected to feel wiped out during that bit), nor is it actually using the bike at normal (for me) exercise levels - the problem came when I try to recover from the high intensity interval while still exercising at a normal level. Perhaps I'm too old for this!

2frustrated 03-08-2006 06:41 AM

:) I don't really like eggs in the morning, and I think that's why they fill me up!!! I'm too busy trying not to throw up to bother about feeling hungry  ALSO you could try those protein pancakes, 1/2 C CC, 1/2 C oats, 2 egg whites. You can cook a batch and freeze em then just micro them with some fruit et voila! They might fill you up more. Or try having a protein shake with porridge.

I'm really laughing at my food today... I'm trying to have no refined foods, but I've had rye bread :barf: instead of white bread (not bad at all so that's a good thing) but then DF bought pizza, so that's dinner tonight, then the costco shopping's just been done, so we have danish pastries in the kitchen! I just had half a custard one! I'm an idiot! But I enjoyed it and I'm still under 1700kcals for the day including pizza and danish!

Sarah - I am MEGA impressed at your HIIT AND Dog walking in one day!! Are you BFL-ing?

kykaree 03-08-2006 06:46 AM

I adore rye bread, but can't find a decent one, except at a health food shop in Hebden Bridge. I like my rye bread dark, heavy and full of caraway seeds, yum!!!

I bought some granny smith apples the other day, and just had one, lovely!!!!

Not sure what's on our menu for lunch, it's curry day, so I normally avoid that, we have three other hot choices, then theres baked spuds and various fillings, or cold poached fish and salad.

I love fritatta, but I don't know if I could do that for breakfast!!! I'll give it a try. I'll try and get more organised!!!!

2frustrated 03-08-2006 06:49 AM

Why does it taste of baking soda though? I've got one with sunflower seeds in, I can get it in Tesco and Waitrose round here.

I'm having porridge with an egg for lunch and probably a pepsi max!

Oh and a thing about drinking your water, kyk. Have you tried drinking squash? I've just sent the man (at work) out to Costco to buy loads of concentrate and a crate of Pepsi Max for me :D I will be sloshing around like a goodun!

kykaree 03-08-2006 06:55 AM

I do drink squash, but I can't face it of a morning!!! LOL I like the grapefruit one from Tesco the best, but I hardly ever get to Tesco. I find English bread very different to Aussie bread, and I really miss it. We seem to get more choice in Oz, it tastes fresher and nicer.

I don't know why yours tastes of soda, that's just weird!!! Is it yeast free?

I had a such a lovely swim, I wish I could do that every day. I can go tomorrow though. It really sets me up for the day.

It'll be interesting to see what my weigh in is like on Thursday/Friday. I have been on my free week, and have been quite good, nowhere near as bad as I could have been!!!!

Sarah Ann 03-08-2006 07:10 AM

Ky - You can make frittata the day before and keep it in the fridge - it lasts about 3 days. If you want you can give it a little nuke in the microwave to make it warm before you eat it.

Have you tried Lidl for rye bread? My local one has got 3 different flavours - I like rye bread with cream cheese and fruit.

Hmmmmmm! I don't think I've got the dedication to do BFL entirely but from what I've read it makes good sense. Using your link I started off with Skwigg's blog and moved on to John Hussman's website about it. www hussmanfitness org/ (fill in the gaps with dots) and I've ordered the BFL book from Amazon.

I thought I would give the BFL rotating exercise theory a try out. I have to walk the dogs every day so I've increased my speed to get a more aerobic workout. I tried to add in some jogging/running to try out HIIT but the dogs REALLY hate it when I run so I abandoned that idea! Today was my first attempt at it on the exercise bike. I'm aiming to rotate HIIT with weight training on alternate days. I'm definitely sleeping well! Are you doing BFL? Is anyone else?? :)

2frustrated 03-08-2006 08:00 AM

I'm a loose BFLer but I'm mainly doing what skwigg describes for her martial arts training now. I don't want to shred my muscles so badly that I can't fight the next day and I don't want to eat so much protein that it compromises my energy levels.

I'm doing the Frus/skwigg plan really

There's a lot of sense behind the HIIT it increases your metabolism both while you workout and for hours afterwards. In fact, it increases your metabolism for longer during rest than any other workout (I suppose excluding weight training, but that's due to something else ;) ).

As for other people doing BFL, you might want to check out the ladies who lift forum (I think it's under exercise), most of them started out on BFL but are now hardcore lifters :D

veggie 03-08-2006 09:14 AM

I'm glad my birthday is over! I could barely move last night I'd eaten so much :o My brother came (he lives in Manc) :carrot: that was the best bit. :D

YP1 03-08-2006 03:29 PM

Glad you had a good time, food doesn't count on your birthday ;)

I feel very proud of myself today, I went to a seminar after work with a buffet. I expected it to be before, but it was after, I went into the room with the food, looked at it, decided I could make something tastier and healthier at home and walked out again! There were cakes and everything!

impossible princess 03-08-2006 03:44 PM

I was good today too I really wanted a takeaway with chips but was good and saved myself a fiver and a few inches on the thighs by making a quick dish of tomato noodles with quorn, peppers and onions in soy sauce and it was yummy yum

veggie 03-08-2006 03:58 PM

Takeaways are bad things  I wish I hadn't had one yesterday I really could not move.

I'm trying to decide if I want to see Will Young :o in September I can not decide. I may just get a ticket then sell it if I can't be bothered going. :p I have no one to go with anyway. Shut up me!

Homersmummy 03-08-2006 05:51 PM

D-day tomorrow. *shudders*

veggie 03-08-2006 07:20 PM

You'll be alright it's me who should be scared! :o I lost last week but my fat club was cancelled so I have no idea how much I lost as I only weighed on my very dodgy scales. Now after my birthday I have probably put on half a stone so have probably cancelled out the loss from last week.

kykaree 03-09-2006 05:14 AM

I'm going mad, crazy, bonkers. I have had my week off this week. Popped on the scales expecting the same, maybe a slight gain, but nope. I've lost. For the first time in a month.

So I am giving up!!!! I'm going to just sit back, enjoy my food, enjoy my exercise, and relax, and see what happens next week.

I've really enjoyed this week of food, haven't been horrendous, but haven't been an angel either. I think maybe I'm not eating quite enough for the amount of exercise I have been doing, hence the utter exhaustion setting in a couple of nights this week.

2frustrated 03-09-2006 05:20 AM

Are you overtraining kykaree?? Read my blog about acceptance of naughty food, and also check out LWL this week for Frus's Fatigue quiz! ;)

Mands and Veg, don't worry about your weigh-ins, I'm sure you will both be fine :D :crossed:

I had the BEST rest day yesterday - a long soak in the bath with pizza and a women's boxing book :D

Homersmummy 03-09-2006 05:39 AM

3 and a half lb! I got slimmer of the month! Whoopwhoop! :carrot:

2frustrated 03-09-2006 05:43 AM

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YEAH! :carrot: Well done :cp:

kykaree 03-09-2006 05:55 AM

I don't think I am overtraining as such. It doesn't seem quite the same as what happened to you, but I do think I'm hanging on too tight, and forgetting to just "be". I'm thinking too much about food and exercise, and I am getting just a tad obsessive. I watched a non diet related tv programme for the first time in weeks on Monday night, and realised just how busy I have been.

So I'm gonna relax, concentrate on other things, and make sure I have balance in my life. Life can't all be about calories in and calories out. I don't want to lose my mind as well as weight!!!!

2frustrated 03-09-2006 06:22 AM

 Good idea to chill out more... I am starting to eat more doughnuts! Which can only be a good thing and lead to less of a binge at weekends!

2frustrated 03-09-2006 06:59 AM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4788704.stm

Traffic light food labels

If you were going to pay attention to these, wouldn't you already be aware that certain foods were high in fat/salt/sugar?? Even if they have lots of red lights on packets, people will still buy them because some people will not care. And doesn't it just prompt companies to come up with more chemically filled junk so that they can put green lights on their packets?? Can't they just make nutritional info mandatory on the back of every packet so we can see exactly what we are stuffing our faces with??

kykaree 03-09-2006 07:15 AM

Food labelling in this country does my head in, I think it makes better sense in Australia, but is that coz it's what I am used to?? I don't think traffic lights will make a blind bit of difference.

And if I see that Walkers advertisment one more time, that makes crisps sound like a reasonable, healthy food option, I'll scream. I love crisps as much as the next person, but I'm not kidding myself, I know they're fattening and empty calories, which is why I have them very occasionally, and I don't eat them at the pub, it's just asking for trouble!!!

2frustrated 03-09-2006 07:21 AM

TURN THE TV OFF! Then the advertising geeks won't convince you that crisps are healthy, chocolate is good for you (we know that anyway ;) ), and that you really need a new sofa, espescially if there's a Weimaraner sleeping on it!

kykaree 03-09-2006 07:25 AM

I only watch commercial telly at the gym!!!! I can't be bothered with it normally. But is just really gets me how Gary Linekar can sleep at night peddling junk food to young impressionable minds.

I quite fancy a Weimeraner!!! It might eat the cat though :D

2frustrated 03-09-2006 08:15 AM

I like Weimeraners... They are beautiful! But they are gun dogs, so I suppose it probably would eat the cat! You can get Vislas which are austrian gun dogs and look like weimeraners but are a more ginger colour and about half the size!!

I'm torn between WY, Derren Brown, sing a long a abba, mamma mia and Radiohead probably touring this year so I should save my money. :p

Sarah Ann 03-09-2006 09:31 AM

Derren Brown - cor! Definitely go see Derren Brown. I'd love to find out if its a fake-up. Either way he's still gorgeous - and that voice!!!!!
