Anyone tried Slimming World?
I have been on a training event today and one of the girls there is on the Slimming World diet. It sounds just what I am looking for. It sounds like there are a lot of free foods.
I was just wondering if anybody here is following this or has in the past? Would love to hear from you. |
Hey Super, my daughter lost 2sts on SW. I tried to do it here but could'nt follow it to the letter because of the branded foods that i can't get here. The only thing that i could complain about was lack of bread..i eat too much of that  you really can stuff your face on this plan as long as you can live with the red and green days and weigh out a few things.
|
I may be joining SW but I don't know if I'll be able to cope with the plan being a fussy vegetarian. I know people who are going for the first time next week help. Should I go? :?: :dizzy:
|
Bread! I love bread...I don't know if I could deal with less of it.
|
I hardly eat any bread at the moment. Veggie, the girl I was talking to was telling me about all the pasta, rice, jacket potatoes etc that she eats. In fact everything she mentioned was vegetarian. She also said that she eats bread but can't remember how much she said or on what days.
I heard that the Bachelors pasta and sauce packets are free from sins on a green day too (apart from the macaroni cheese one), I love the cheese and broccoli one - yummee. I'm thinking about biting the bullet and starting on Monday. Am going to go on my own but hubby will have to pick me up afterwards. |
I've never tried Bachelors pasta and sauce packets told you I'm fussy :o I have a thing against broccoli but I may get one to try.
|
You can hardly taste the broccoli in them. They are really tasty. I love them but they are something like 14 points on WW which is why I haven't had them in ages - lol.
|
In the magazine they list all the free foods that you can eat on the 'green' and the 'red' days i.e. Princes Beef and Red Wine or Icelands Good Choice chicken breasts in white wine and mushroom sauce (sound good?) are all free foods on and Original/Red Day...Marks and Sparks Vegetable Medley and Heinz Rigatoni pasta are free on Green Days..don't know how they do it when you can eat a can of spaghetti which contains about 300cals and it be free  but it does work..i lost 4lbs the first week don't know why i did'nt keep it up  i either got fed up with the eggs for brekky or it was the no more than 2 slices of bread that i could'nt do without and i did'nt want to use my sins on bread  i was saving them for beer or chocolate
I'm going to start either this or W.W. again ;) Veggie, if you're a vegetarian i don't really know what you'd get out of it unless you were going to follow green days every day  you might learn a few new recipes but thats about all..it would'nt hurt to go to just one meeting anyway, right? Super, are you going to live on Batchelors Pasta and Sauce packets then? i know that Batchelors Potatoes and sauce (the cheddar cheese ones excluding milk and butter) are free on green so i substituted Idahoan Spuds over here..don't know if they are equivalent or not but i love them :T |
can I make up those potatoes with just water then? this diet sounds better all the time - lol. I really could live on those pastas - lol. Seriously though, I will probably just take them to work for lunch.
Am going to ask my mum to drop me at the meeting o the way home from work on Monday and get my husband to pick me up. |
Hi!
just thought I'd chip in as I've done both SW and WW. I am a vegetarian and stuck to 'green days' everyday. i consistently lost 1 - 2lb a week. On green days you can eat unlimited pasta, rice and potatoes. SW does limit your bread - the most you can have is 4 slices per day, and after that it is very high in 'syns' (I know it's a stupid word!) You can eat ALOT on SW - there a loads of processed foods that are free, including pasta and sauce (if not using butter). One thing I have found is that treats are quite high in points on SW - you only get 10 syns a day, and a pack of Walkers crisps are about 8 points - so it makes it really hard to work them into your diet. On WW, Walkers crisps are 4 points and I get 26 points a day so I can fit treats in easily, and still lose weight! This makes it easier for me to stick to in the long term - sometimes you just want chocolate! I am now doing WW - I think I just wanted a change really. I think that SW teaches you very little about healthy eating and portion control - I used to eat HUGE plates of pasta and loads of ready meals. You certainly won't go hungry on the SW diet! One bad thing I've heard is that ALOT of people end up putting the weight back on with SW -I did, maybe because they haven't really learnt about healthy eating and portion control? I'm certainly not against SW - You will definately lose weight on it! Hope this helps! Amanda xxx |
Thanks for all the info  I'm only going as other people are (if I do go that is) :dizzy: I'd be happier if they were going to WW I did the online plan for a bit and it was great. I don't think it really matters what plan I'm on. I just need to cut down. ;)
|
I lost a few stone with WW before I got married but have put it all back on (nothing to do with WW - I just have no will power - lol). I have tried to get back on plan with WW but can't find the motivation. I only get 20 points a day (in fact they cut me down to 18 at one point). My main problem is that the portion sizes are too small for me on WW. I can go without chocolate as long as I can have huge bowls of pasta etc - lol.
I don't really know much about SW except for the girl that I was talking to said that the syns are higher than WW point but there are far more "free" things on SW which suits me fine. She said that she was on 15 syns a day but she wasn't particularly large, wierd). |
Hi Superwitch.
I was on Slimming World for quite a time and am planning to return - Well I am still eating the things I would have done on SW but not attending classes. Our leader left so I will join my friend in her new class. I will probably join up again around Easter Time. Incidentally I did go to WW ages ago but was always hungry and headachey which never happend on this SW one. I used to get al the slimming mags and was impressed at the veggie reciipes in Slimming World. Too often the other mags would eithr ignore that a thing as vegetarianism existed or would tell you to just leave the ham or avoid the recipe qall together and have beans on toast instead! Veggie why not buy the mag before you join and see what you think. Veggie - Have no fears I have been Vegetarian for around 22 years and the Green Plan suits me just fine! If you are okay to eat Quorn - a lot of the ready meals (though not all) are point free. YOu can have Macaroni cheese (check Syn value -but the tinned stuff was free - ok not haute cuisine but alright with a jacket spud). Yes Superwitch you can eat rice, pasta and spuds! Hoorah! Look out the Marks & SPencer count on us mash - these are (or were) 'free'. I had just that for a lunch (they do mash with cabbage or an oniony or is it leek one. Very filling. I think as well as a swede one if you are into that (yuck!). Don't go the full fat one with mature cheddar though. Yes it is lovely but oh so naughty! These can be nuked in the microwave. Yes the Batchelors Pasta n'Sauce are very good (if a little too flavoured) The mushroom one is my fave. I try not to eat too many packets of food and try to get those packets of ready to nuke vegs. Due to unfortunate circs (having to share a kitchen with people who (practically live in it and I am not fond of waiting hours for the electric oven to heat up) unable to spend lot of time preparing and cooking llke I used to so have to rely on microwave a lot of the time. The green diet while not totally veggie (if you want you can add small amounts of meat and fish as long as it counts as a healthy option or you add up the syn values), but the Red diet is meaty and fishy and you would have to add syns or healthy options for the pasta, rice and so on. Yes everyone misses bread - you can eat it but you have to be aware of how much it "costs" syn wise. A simple sandwich is using up syns and even then you are not necessarily full after wards. The weightwatchers and nimble breads are lowest in "syns" I am not that bothered about ordinary sliced bread but it is the speciality breads I miss. Ah well... I have made some great recipes and I am thrilled that you can cook no/low syn version of things such as (a personal fave) falafels. These are baked rather than fried. The green recipe book has a number of recipes in it including a number of Indian ones so have no fear this is not a bland "diet". |
Reading what Amanda said about putting on weight afterwards - I think that is true of any "diet" if you don't keep up the good intentions. However I find I am able to get back in the saddle with SW far quicker than with WW. What everyone has to remember is to check on the Syn value before hand. Even an item labelled low fat , low calorie can come up high. I bought a tin of WW rice pud. Let me tell you it was disgusting and to add insult to injury it was high in Syns!
Mueller light yoghurts are a fave of SW's but please not these are no good for conscientious veggies as most light yogs have gelatine in and these certainly do. |
hi all
what happens if like me you do not eat salad or much veg or not that much fruit are all the programs based on lots of salad veg and fruit Who said ignorance is bliss? thanks linus |
I am not completely sure about SW diet as have not been before but rfom what I can see, this might be one diet that you might get away with that although you should try to eat some fruit and veg whether dieting or not. It doesn't have to fresh fruit and veg, it could be juice, soup, frozen, tinned, dried. I am lucky because I like fruit and veg but I know that there are plenty of people who don't. Why not add a new thread asking for new ways to eat fruit and veg?
|
hi sw ican eat lots raw i just dont like them cooked and as ive never actually been on a diet before i thuoght they were all salad and stuff .I eat lots of rice pasta and stuff i just don,t like salad i refuse to eat anything my hamster does but i will look at sw thanks again

The only thing to be very careful with is not to do fruit smoothies. These are ladled with calories (after all there are 80 in a glass of orange juice alone!). As my ex SW leader explained when having a smoothie you can gulp down loads without realising it whereas you would not be able to eat the same amount of fruit raw!
Certaily you can have as much cooked veg as you like. Just don't deep fry it! Steamed would be good because it keeps in the vits and the veg tastes more of the veg itself. Don't go putting butter on it all though (I still have to wean myself off doing this from time to time!). SW- I hope you enjoy going to Slimming World. Don't worry if at first it sounds barmy or you think it is just you that cannot get to grips with it. We are here to help! It took me a while. One good product they will tell you about is the spray oil which has minimal calories/syns. The sunflower one is better as some people don't like the taste of the Olive oil one. All you have to remember is, if you start the day on a red day you have to stick with it. If however you are going out and have no idea what you will be eating later- plan ahead by having cereal for brekkie then perhaps an egg sarnie and then you can either go green or red for dinner! By the way, I am sure "Hammy" or whaever your hamster is called is quite put out by you dissing his food. Remember sunflower seeds give him that glossy coat! |
Sorry the end bit was for Linus in regard to her rubbishing her hamster's diet. I did not make it clear. SW will be wondering why I mention her hamster!
|
Hmmm, had a good look at SW's 'diet' last night and i remember now why i could'nt keep it up  i got sick of the oven baked fries and the idea of a poached egg with syn free chips and mushy peas was :p i could have had one fried in fry light but even so the diet seemed very bland after a while :( i'm sure all you UK'ers who can get your hands on the pre-packaged "free" foods will do really well..i know when i used to get the mag and see all the yummy grub that was free (and i can't get) it used to make my mouth water  GOOD LUCK :lucky: to all of you who are going to start this :) think it will have to be calorie counting for me.
|
Bland? WIth all the spicy stuff you can cook? Loads of Asian stuff. Recipes as well as packaged food.
|
 I don't like spicy or asian food :)
|
;) hi peacock my hamster or jerry as he is calle d im afraid prefers wotsits and chips thanks mainly to the efforts of my sons but my dogs do love sunflower seeds! :o it,s the goldfish who eat the lettuce :p .see its not just me that has a weird taste in food and why i cook 4 different meals a night ,also for those who are having bother with virus,s have you tried a spy sweeper it check s emails as well .Hubbby builds comps and we have 3 constantly hooked to broadband and we very rarely have any bother all you do is run the program every now and then, and if theres anything dodgy including spam or cookies it takes them off
thanks linus |
Lettuce eating goldfish?! That I cannot believe!
We used to give our mouse cheesey footballs. Are you old enough to remember them? The round things. The heighth of sophistication at dinner parties ..not. I think Will Self mentioned them on room 101 once. Well Kipsy our mouse loved them. We also had a mouse called Jerry. 3 hamsters too. I miss having the litte fellas around. They are so comical. My dad used to let one out when I had gone to sleep. For some reason he fed it raw spaghetti bits and you could see the thing sticking out. The same one got under the floor boards where the forgotten apples were . You know the ones you store away and forget about. They were well cidery when the hamster found them and was quite drunk (probably with a little hangover too) when my dad found her. She probalby started a fight with him as well! |
Just a quick note before bed. I joined SW today and am quite looking forward to this way of eating. Will fill you all in on the details tomorrow.
|
Forgot to say, my hubby builds computers and fixes them currently have 4 of other people's in my bedroom waiting to be fixed - grr - lol).
Do you not get mad with all the bits in the house like I do? - lol |
super don,t i know that feeling unfortunatly hes really good with the software side as well so you get frantic phonecalls from people who,s system is going beep beep beep ;) weve been really busy having to reinstall a lot of virus plauged comps at the moment i think anti virus should be compulsary and i wouldn,t have a sore ear listening to people trying to explain probs to me cause hubby is on a clan match and yes goldfish really do eat lettuce it stops them from eating the plants in their tank i give it to our tropical fish as well
bye all ps ihave suvived 18 hours of no coca cola and i normally drink 2ltrs plus a day |

weird :chin: |
I meant in the basement. We used to. The hamster somehow got under the floor boards into the basement.
OK now?! :) |
I joined SW on Monday (I could have sworn that I already posted that here somewhere). I went on my own. I am on my second day and I have to say that so far the diet is suiting me (two days isn't much to go but I always find the first couple of days dieting hard).
I have been eating plenty. I am having quorn sausages, Iceland Good Choice mashed potato and baked beans for tea - all of which are free from syns. |
YUm Yum Superwitch!
Keep up the good work! A long way from rabbit food eh? |
SW, you did say it - about 5 posts back!! Looks like it's making you light headed!
Hope it is going ok for you - tea sounded lovely and all free of syns! Tracy |
well done sw .you,ll have to keep me posted on how you go
|
sorry about that meant to go advanced and posted instead :o as i was saying i,m not joining anywhere until iget this caffene addiction knocked on the head {no coca cola for three days or choc or crisps} will be interested to hear how you go :)
|
Linus. I gave up caffeine years ago when I was pregnant. I started off by switching to Decaff coffee, then moved on to decaff diet coke. It was wierd at first but now I can't tell the difference. Only ever drink caffeine if there is no alternative. Have recently started drinking tea (never liked it before but have developed a taste for it - lol) I have been buying the Tetley decaff and it is ok. Stick with it you will get there.
|
:) hi super i think if i could just get rid of the thumping headaches that i get trying to stop drinking cola and the constant tiredness id be half way there but thanks to all on this forum im determined this time ,hubby said hes noticed a difference in my attitude already  i think its because i know i just need to come here and theres someone to listen to my moaning my freinds and sisters {all 4 of them}are all very thin they try to listen but just dont under stand how frustrated ,berated and undervalued you feel when you carry all this extra weight anyway enough of my moaning good luck on the new diet and thanks to all my cheerleaders just thanks for being here :bravo:
|
Linus, if you're suffering from headaches with your withdrawal from caffiene, make sure you drink loads of water luv. I never, NEVER used to drink water unless it had some flavour and now I don't ever drink less than six HUGE glasses a day and that's not counting my cuppa's.
I set myself times to drink as I found it hard, but it's just part of my life now. I drink my cuppa first thing, six a.m. Then a glass of water, then breakfast with another glass before work. At lunch time I drink water and a cuppa, when I get home I drink a glass, one with dinner and then one during the evening, and sometimes I drink more because I'm just plain thirsty. I do tend to stay away from soda but do have a treat of the diet vaariety every now and then, and I'm not a big acoholic drinker so I find it easy to deal with that. So drink, drink, drink luv, and be merry. On water of course :) |
I must admit i don't think i would no the difference between caffeinated and caffeine free stuff  i've got some caffeine free diet coke in the fridge and i certainly can't taste any difference (have'nt done a taste test tho' ) what was weird about it Super? i don't like coke anyway :p unless there is a dark rum in it ;) no wonder coke is so popular over here  there is no competition! there is a much better choice of pop in the UK :D dandelion and burdock and vimto being 2 of my faves :T
|
I am a particulary happy bunny this morning because I looked in the SW syns book and I noticed that Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Farmhouse yogurt - Gooseberry one is only 2 sins! It takes so creamy it should be arrested! They have other flavours such as strawberry but they are all different syn values.
I know it would be better if it was 0 synvalues but most very low fat ones are not vegetarian and I do love creamy yoghurts! |
