Default Mushrooms = chestnuts? (f word)

Gordon Ramsey did a delicious looking dish last evening. It was fillet of beef with a mushroom topping. He was beginning to chop them and called them chestnuts.

HUH?

Oh, I was in tears when he took the pigs to slaughter. I'm not going to become a vegetarian, but now I know I don't want to grow my own food that isn't a vegetable.

TIA

I'm not much of a mushroom afficionado, and I didn't see the programme, but I'd hazard a guess that he meant chestnut mushrooms?

What kind of mushies are they? Are they like our brown crimini ones? Crimini mushies look like button mushies only brown. I think they are baby portobellas.

Yes they look like the normal white button mushrooms, but a pinker brown colour, with a stronger more earthy taste, and slightly crisper. Mush better taste wise.

Hi

Chestnut mushrooms are very yummy - they have a bit more sustance to them than normal button mushrooms and don't seem to lose quite so much liquid when they are cooked. Here's a link to a page which gives a better description of them (chestnut mushrooms are about a third of the way down that page).

I didn't see the GR programme but I know what you mean about pigs ... about a month ago DH and I were in our car stuck behind a truck delivering pigs to an abattoir which was down a narrow lane in a small village with cars queued up behind us so there was no hope of turning round - and I am convinced that those pigs knew exactly what was going to happen to them, they were SCREAMING in fear as they were offloaded from the truck and they kept on trying to escape which made the whole offloading process very slow so the pigs got even more upset. By the time we were able to drive on I was in floods of tears and I haven't felt comfortable eating meat ever since.
