Never heard gomerel. We'd say someone stupid is 'dateless' or 'gormless', or 'thick as pig [expletive]'... British English is much higher in insult count than American english, I noticed. We have a much more aggressive style, linguistically, and yet you're much less likely to get shot here. Maybe we get it all out verbally!

I love "linguistic differences." My maternal grandparents were both born in the US (central Illinois) but there families came from different areas of Poland. I remember them constantly bickering about who's polish was "correct," when they disagreed on a word.

My husband and I often have to ask for "translations" of expressions we use, though we're both "midwesterners" - I was raised in central Illinois, and he in northcentral Wisconsin (about a five hours drive apart).

I had to explain "living the life of Riley," to him yesterday, though he had me stumped when he asked me who Riley was.

http://www.jameswhitcombriley.com/the_life_of_riley.htm

It dates back to the 1880s. There was a sitcom entitled "The Life of Riley" with William Bendix on TV during the 50s. It was adapted for TV from an old radio show as was much of the 50s TV shows.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! Lint is the stuff that collects on the screen in the dryer. Cotton ball is correct for the stuff in the top of a pill bottle. They are also used for removing make-up, eye make-up, nail polish, etc.

Thanks again!

There's nothing wrong with Essex (but there's quite a bit wrong with Gordon 'F' Ramsay). Basically people who think they are better than others (like Gordon Ramsay) believe that everyone and everything in Essex is second rate.

I always thought the Essex thing was similar to the American 'Red Neck' thing ?????

Posh Totty - is just what an average type lad calls a young woman from a well-to-do family.

I did for a while - but mainly for little 'uns. Although I did once manage to get a rather spectacular standard poodle Burberry mac and matching sou'wester. Weirdest thing I ever saw. Who on earth in their right mind would buy their dog a hat!

Heavens yes! I love her books. I just found out that she goes to some of the Scottish Games here in the Bay Area. I may go to the one near here this year just to see her.

Warning: Jamie and Claire are addicting.

The original has been selected for a miniseries. I heard that several years ago. I wish they would hurry up and do it.
