Default The Worldly Chicks - July Thread Kicking off the 3rd Quarter

Ok Worldly Friends, I will openly admit if you haven't already figured it out that I am not into cutesy titles or inspirational quotes. So I'm going back to a generic title, if someone wants differently, please have at it.

I find that no matter what we call our thread, it doesn't really have that much of an influence on how the month goes for me - just marking time here. Actually with the drop in posts, we could probably just go to quarterly threads and still be under the maximum 500 posts per thread limit.

And July does kick off the 3rd quarter of the year. That's hard to believe - I'm still in the middle of summer.

Let me go back and do the admin stuff and I'll come and post.

I sort of hate to see July come around – for us summer is half over and considering how chilly it’s been, doesn’t even seem like summer has hit yet. This is one of those weekends where I try to stick as close to home as possible. All the crazies are up for the holiday so forget going on the boat or into town or other normal activities. We are heading out tonight for a fish fry at a new place – thank goodness they start serving at 4pm so we can try and get there early – not interested in sitting at a bar for 90 minutes waiting on a table. DH was longingly looking at places for picture taking opportunities this weekend – the zoo and a botanical garden. The zoo will be insane with little kids and Moms with their “stroller boats” – those huge things they push around without regard to anyone else’s space. And I am just not up for walking to much more than the car and back. I have been icing my leg, then in the hot tub for a short soak and finishing it with a liniment rub and so far I can at least move a bit. But I am still in a lot of pain so I am trying to limit being on my feet. I feel sorry for DH who is itching to get out but I can’t help it. I told him he can go himself if he wants to but that’s no fun.

Bingo was on the quiet side yesterday. The crowds are down from last year. The casino gets a bigger turnout because they can pay higher prizes as they are exempt from the government fees and licenses and overhead that we have to pay out. I think the people who do come, do so in an effort to support the senior center. I did a lot of the paperwork last night as I am preparing to be able to handle things as the lead person and we came out money wise balanced to the penny. My partner shook my hand and said “You’re hired” I said “thanks… I guess ) I also did the thrift shop sales for the month and though it appears we did good, we are down substantially from this time last year. We seem to have a steady stream of customers and donations are consistent, I think sales are much smaller – a dollar or two for the most part.

We aren’t planning much for this weekend . I did bow out of getting together with friends on Sunday – I am not in a good enough place to prepare for company and get everything in order. We are doing fish fry tonight. Will probably bop into town tomorrow for a bit and we’ll attend at least one fireworks show on Sunday. It does look like a beautiful weekend – low 70’s and sunny. I will have to make sure I water the garden. After I post this I will head out to the garden and check on those strawberries – they look quite pretty. This will be my first batch and Laura – yes they are perennials – in fact they send out runners and you have to control them or they will take over the garden bed in the blink of an eye.

Talking earlier about lefties and your comment about right handed parents having “lefty kids” I was curious about that. There are genetics involved of course as my dad was a lefty who was forced to become a righty, so I inherited that. Also there is a gene which is right dominant and if you don’t have that one – you get the “chance gene” – you could be either. We have the chance gene and went the lefty route. Interesting that some people have the chance gene and are still righties. I still think being different for me is right up there supporting my non-conformist personality One major diet rule for me is trying to eat right handed – I sure don’t seem to get much food in my mouth that way
I’m sorry to hear about Coal’s weakening legs. I hope he can be made comfortable. It’s good that he is still walking, even if you had to reduce the length of the walks. I have watched Meadow go down the stairs to the litter box and she goes carefully one step at a time. We have litter boxes in 2 spots to make it easier for her. They said the diabetes will eventually weaken her legs too. But so far, like Coal she seems to be making the best of it.

I ruined a good box of fresh strawberries and a bunch of fresh rhubarb by making a dessert bar recipe that was bland, dry and pretty awful. I had an inkling as I was making it that it would not be that good and I should have heeded my misgivings. The crust was was too thick for the size pan and I even made it in a bigger pan! It needed something extra and I don’t have room in the freezer for ice cream as it is filled with citrus popsicle treats that DH is craving right now. I made a Chantilly cream – fancy whipped cream with Gran Mariner, vanilla extract and sugar which helped it a bit but I will most probably toss the entire pan out. I even toasted up some of my fresh Georgia pecans and that didn’t help either. I did make a rhubarb salsa that had lightly blanched rhubarb, red, green and yellow bell peppers, red onions, chopped Roma tomatoes and lime juice with a hint of brown sugar, salt and pepper. I put a serrano pepper in there but it wasn’t enough heat so DH added an entire good sized jalapeno pepper – seeds and all. That really flamed it up – Annie come on over and help him eat it! I’m glad he got to enjoy something at the heat level he likes. He made steak bites yesterday but I was full from lunch and didn’t eat any – good thing he said as they were very salty. I thought he was shaking far too much salt into the bag – he was trying to make a crust for the meat. :P

Annie you make me laugh with your comment about us all following each other in the surgical line. Believe me I would rather not have knee surgery although people said it changed their lives getting new parts. I am still jaded by the experience with my “new eyes”. My MRI is scheduled for July 7. The knees come and go – they calm down yet it seems that when they flare (and they do every year) it lasts for months. And the ongoing expense of physical therapy, shots and doctor’s visits. I hope your surgery will be successful and that you heal sooner than planned. You’ve been suffering a long time. I hope that Sam can find a full time job – what about the kids though? Daycare will eat up more than her salary. I wish she lived up here – they are desperate for people to clean houses, especially in the nice waterfront homes that rent out for the big bucks. They are paying $25 a hour and you get to work your own hours, just as long as it’s done by the time the next family checks in. One of my friends did one house as a favor and now has realtors stalking her. She handed it off to a neighbor who accumulated 6 houses in one week. That would be ideal. If nothing else if Sam moves to the commune, she will have steady work! I feel for you on the increased water bill. Especially if your water is like my sister who calls hers “liquid gold”. Just have one more person in the house can be pricey, much less 3 more. I am glad in some ways we have a well although I do miss the city water pressure. Sending you good thoughts and wishes for the struggles that never seem to leave

Ceejay – it may very well come down to the point where you are just tired of work and eager to get out of the office altogether. Especially if they drag their feet hiring your replacement and then expect you to do 30 years of training in 2 days. I’m sure you have one of those jobs where all your knowledge is accumulated by years on the job. They will have fun with L, who it sounds doesn’t pay close attention like you do. You reminded me that I forgot to get my B12 shot. Maybe you should get mine too, doesn’t seem to be doing anything for me.

Hellos to Shad, Michelle, Dee and Susie. Hope you all have a good weekend.

Quick post. I posted 2 times last week only to lose it because it kept saying I wasn't logged in. From now on, I'm typing it in word and copy and past.

DH and I are officially on vacation! Which is a stay-cation this year. We have a lot planned and a lot of rest time planned too!

I went to see Phillip Phillips in concert on Tuesday with my best friend who won the tickets. Tonight DH and I are going to see Zack Brown Band and tomorrow night my best friend and I are going to see The Romantics, Nightranger and Rick Springfield and we are sitting row five from that stage at that one!!!

I will do personal's tomorrow.

Happy--Thanks for starting the new thread!

Just lost a long post due to the fact that the cursor flew off the writing part of the screen, picked up Dees post and put it in quotes in the personal messages section. Drat.

Better go fix up my expenses sheet and then I will come back to this.

Good morning Ladies,

I am going to try and do personals from what I remember from the June page.

Happy: Good idea to be sure you balanced the Bingo to the penny before taking it over as a lead person.

I am sorry to hear that your knees are still hurting you. I have had people tell me the BioFreeze liniment rub is very good.

I saw that many of us on here are lefties--I am too!

Annie: Congratulations on your 9 month sobriety milestone! I am proud of you sister!

Laura: I remember you posting that you lost your fitbit. It really drives me crazy that I have no idea where I lost that first one. It sounds like you are ok with using the pedometer that you have and I say "why not"! Really the fitbits are the same thing, with a few more bells and whistles.

Dee: Nice to see you posting here again. I'm sorry to hear that you had to give up your business due to the hand issues. But if I know you, you will make the best of it.

Ceejay: It won't be long now and you will be a retiree! We had a lot of people retiring at my work place this past week as it was the end of our fiscal and that tends to happen. Two ladies that I really look up to retired. It's sad for me to lose those mentors and examples, but I am excited for them. They met their biggest goal!! And here you will soon. It's what we all are working towards--RETIREMENT!

Shad: I hate to lose a post! We will be right here when you come back.

Hi to Michelle!

I am excited about the concert I am going to tonight! It is going to be a perfect evening for it. I can't decide between two dresses that I plan to wear. I want to look amazing just in case I get photo opportunities with Rick Springfield tonight! hahaha!

Susie
Wow a Rick Springfield concert. I can remember some of his songs. Enjoy.

Laura
Sad to hear that Coal is not feeling his best. But he has a good mom and daddy that will take care of him.

My doctor's appointment went as expected. He did the test for anemia and he came back in my room and he wow this is good and asked about what the gyn did. I told him. I was down another 3 pounds at the doctor's office.
Today I'm at work and so far so good. I have filled out request forms for 24 hours vacation in July and 48 in August. Sorry L. I've text her but she has not responded.
Talked to my sibling that lives in Dallas. They had their swimming pool over hauled. She said it took 24 hours to refill it. I almost laughed but I did tell her now think about us with two 500,000 gallons tanks and one 250, 000 gallon tank. It's not hard in the winter time to keep them full but now till it cools off the pumps will be running a lot.

Expenses finished and sent in. They owe me $343.00 I should have put them in much earlier. Still it will be nice to get that lot back.

Little miss S is having a bit of a party on the week after her birthday - apparently DS1 (her Dad) has a couple of projects coming to the sharp end next weekend. So I will change my plans to be there the following weekend. Will go home to Brisbane this weekend instead.

We had an election for government this weekend here in Aus. We don't make such a production out of it as you do in the States and obviously the people are pretty fed up with the whole bloody lot of pollies. They have voted for a hung parliament again - that is no side has enough seats in the House of Representatives to govern in their own right. They may have to do a deal with some of the minor parties or independents. It is not surprising really as none of them seem to have any inventive or fresh ideas how to get the country out of the pooh!. Since the mining boom bust, it has been a fairly hard road for the rest of the population to get on and thrive. We are taxed out of existence and prices are way too high and the whole country is in debt - particularly credit card debt.

Work is stressful because everything is changing rapidly. Hard to keep up with the new bits and pieces. The business policies are not set in place and everyone has a different idea of how their work will fit with the model.

Happy - I see you are having a bad summer over there. It is not surprising since we had a very long hot dry one, and it didn't really start cooling down until the end of May. The rain we are supposed to have during the raining season didn't come and the vege garden didn't take off until mid may - where normally I am starting to harvest tomatoes and corn in May.
I must have the 'chance' gene because I can and do use my left hand the same as my right including writing - though it is a bit shaky at time. There are things I use the right hand for (eg mouse) and others I use the left (ATM Machines and unlocking the car and unlocking the door to the house)

Laura - sorry to hear about Coal's legs. Hope there is a cure for this and he is not in pain.

Susie - sounds like you are having a great break from work. All these concerts - enjoy.

Ceejay - good to see that you are using up some of that holiday time. You will appreciate that time when it comes to moving. Can get packing done and also throw out some stuff which you find you really haven't used in a long time and will not use in a long time to come.

Okay - that's about it from me at the moment. There is a program coming on tv in a moment that I enjoy watching - bunch of comedians making fun of the weeks news. Can be quite hilarious. So be good or be careful and I'll be back.

Well that's a relief - it wasn't going to post and I had to copy the post and then close out of the site and come back in again. Worked third time.

It is a rainy day here in Ohio for the 4th of July. Our community did fireworks last night. It had rained most of the day but stopped long enough to get the fireworks in.

DH and I are going to see the new Tarzan movie today and dinner out at Red Robin. We are cleaning our bedroom and the exercise room before we go. This week we are cleaning house a couple of rooms at a time and cleaning them from top to bottom. Moving the furniture and mopping the wood floors and wiping down the wood work. I usually do it once a month but haven't done it in almost 2 months now. I use the damp Swiffer on the wood floors weekly.

Tomorrow, we are going to Kings Island and taking one of our nieces and a friend of her's that has passes too. It is our first time there for the season.

Wednesday we will clean the living room, the hall way and the dinning room as we are today and then in the early evening we are taking our other 3 nieces to Young's Dairy Farm for dinner, put-put golf and ice cream after that.

Thursday is cleaning the kitchen, bathroom and office, my TOPS group has a summer picnic that evening where we bring our family members as well, so DH will go with me. I also plan to go to the library on Thursday.

Friday, we are going to see another movie with one of our friends, "Central Intelligence" and then dinner at a new place called "Pints and Pies--the pies are pizza pie! this is all located at one of those shopping centers that are set up like little cities and they have life bands on the weekend in the summer so we will spend some time sitting on the square and listing to the music if the weather permits.

My week is going by quickly!

I'll come back later and do personnel's. Time to get moving on this house stuff.

Hi ladies,

Tooling along here through the holidays. Our quiet little town is invaded by "foreigners" aka those city people with the bad manners. It's horrid to go into town at all. We had a nice Saturday, ran some errands and stopped at a few boat landings and got lulled to a false sense of encouragement because they were about half empty. This holiday weekend as well as Labor Day in September (the last hurrah of summer) are the busiest on the water. We actually thought we could get out yesterday. I invited friends, we packed up a nice basket of fresh fruit, cheese, crackers and wine and were just about to head out when DH said - let me run down and see what the boat landings looked like. Landing 1 - only one parking spot left and someone was pulling in as DH left, Landing 2 - parking well out to the road, Landing 3 - a line of 5 people waiting to pull into to an overcrowded lot. So ... no boating for use yesterday. sad faces - it was a gorgeous day to be on the water. We instead went to the friends house with the intent to play board games but just sat and nibbled and chatted away. Came home around 6pm, went into town and ordered a pizza when we found the place we wanted the pizza from was closed for the holiday weekend. Came home, ate pizza, lazed about and went to bed. Today I have to run into town in a few minutes - they are running the farmer's market and I have to go in and get my eggs she is holding for me. 2 weeks ago I forgot I asked her to reserve some and never picked them up. I might swing by the thrift shop to see how things are going since it's on my way and out of the way of the main street crowds. DH is pulling apart more of the deck in the hopes that the deck man will keep his promise and actually show up in 2 weeks to start on that work. We did not feel like going back out again for the fireworks show in town. Tonight they have a big show at the casino - we usually go to that one, not sure if DH wants to. We might get a spot of rain tonight. Momma deer came by this morning with her 2 spotted fawns. Very cute.

Susie - glad you had fun at the concerts. DH wants to see the Tarzan movie - I have no interest in it but may go if he wants to see it that badly. You sound like you are making the most of your vacation - a bit of work, a lot of fun. GOod for you for balancing things but you are making me tired with all your busy Thanks for the recommendation on the Biofreeze - I have a bottle of that somewhere in this house but it's alluding me at the moment.

Shad - Regarding your politics (and ours) I am afraid we have tipped mankind over the edge of no return. I'm not sure the tailspin can be stopped. Just hoping I leave this earth before it all implodes. I feel sorry for the younger people as I don't know how to get back on track again. How much longer will your contract run now that things are getting to the usual chaotic - oh Lordy, HOW will we make this work?????

Ceejay - I see that you are working your last holiday weekend. At least you can relax in September - will be nice that it's not your problem any more. NO worries answering the phones either. Time is ticking, make your checklist.

Annie, Laura, Dee - hope you are all enjoying your weekend. I think we all have decent weather for the 4th. Enjoy some picnic time! The fresh fruit - melons, cherries are wonderful as is the corn on the cob. We are having grilled chicken, corn on the cob, fresh peach pie and potato salad if I get my act together. I need to start canning my ripe peaches today also.

Have a good one everybody!

Hi ya!

Happy. Thanks for starting the new thread. Don't take this wrong but I can tell you are in pain with your legs and knees by your posts. God love you. I hope you get some relief soon. I think if my my and heart weren't in so much pain my ankle and knees would hurt more or bother me more. You sure are busy.

Susie. Your staccato on sounds like fun with a bit of work thrown in. Enjoy.

Shaddie. I am over all the politics and bull ship. I am with Happy. Hope to be gone before it gets much worse.

Laura. Hope you are enjoying the long weekend. Poor Coal. Hate when their health starts deteriorating.

Ceeg. Not much longer now. Glad your iron was better.

Hello to all. Mostly raining here. Kind of depressing. Ready to go back to work. Cleaned out two closets. One cabinet and the 4 shelf unit in the laundry room. Washed sheets and ran the vacuum. C has worked all weekend. Sam and the boys spent the weekend at my sons. Quiet.

Better post before I hit the wrong key on my phone.

Hugs.

Evening all. Bf & I are debating if we want to go see the fireworks tonight. I wish we could just find a spot away from the crowds & traffic/parking chaos where we could view them...

Happy - Thanks for starting up our new thread! Too bad your town was invaded by the "foreigners" & you couldn't even get the boat on the water. How was the fish fry the other night? Have you harvested any strawberries yet? I just bought some today, and some blueberries. A couple of peaches too. Too bad the dessert bar recipe didn't turn out. I'm waiting for the local corn to come in, but I might feel just a bit guilty eating it with bf avoiding it due to his braces. Not too guilty though- he can saw it off the cob if he wants it badly enough. Aww, I bet momma and the fawns were cute.

Susie - Hello to a fellow lefty!!, Wow, you have quite a week planned! How great you went to all those concerts - so much fun to go to outdoor ones. A friend of mine saw Rick Springfield, Loverboy, & the Romantics this weekend. Wish I kept up with this stuff & gone to that one. I saw Loverboy way back when I was in college! !

Ceejay - Good for you scheduling the vacation time!!

Shad - This November's presidential election will be interesting for sure. Will the dislike for both major candidates cause low turnout or high, votes against rather than for?? Who knows? My state - Illinois - is in the worst condition ever and I don't know how our legislators live with themselves. Sorry your work is stressful - that always seems to be the case!

Hi Dee - How was the cookout?

Annie - Boo on the rain, and you went from full-house chaos to lots of quiet. Must feel strange. But try to savor it before it ends!

Hi Michelle!!
==

Beautiful weather all weekend, but today's been cloudy /overcast all day. Very dry so far, so I watered well yesterday.

At the vet on Friday, the vet said there's not much more re meds for Coal, which differs from what another vet in the practice said. Anyway, now we just have to take be prepared for what's coming & make the kindest decision for him when the time comes. Right now, some days are better than others. Yesterday his tummy was upset. Today he stayed put all morning, but we've found he perks up when we encourage him to get up & about. I guess it's the same with dogs as in humans - feels a bit better to move around periodically. Maybe more of a mental benefit than physical. We're doing much shorter walks now, so we've decided to do two walks a day instead of just one.

Yesterday we went to a local fest with friends & saw a band called Here Come the Mummies. Our 2nd time seeing them. Very good band.

That's about it for me. I'm off two more days so I'm happy about that. I might buy some paint that matches our soffit, fascia & gutters (taupe ) & get the small garage door scraped, sanded & painted. This will be a change from the old color scheme. If it looks good, we'll paint the overhead door that color too. We also considered a deep reddish/rust color that complements the brick, but I think it would fade too much in the exposure to sunlight. I don't want to paint any more frequently than necessary!

Okay, enough rambling. I'll get this posted. Enjoy what's left of your day/holiday/weekend.

Hello. It feels great to be on vacation when I think of all my friends back at work!

Today we are going to Kings Island. We are heading out about 10:30 a.m. We are taking our "niece" Cailyn and a friend of hers. I think it is going to be a fun day.

We have a bit of rain this morning and then we could have spotty showers up until noon then just cloudy with some sun (I'm taking my sunscreen).

Yesterday when we were cleaning the bedroom, and moved the bed, DH found my old fitbit! I couldn't believe it. I am giving it to him to use. He is excited to try it and see how many steps he gets in. At KI today we should get a lot in (Happy--I may be hunting for that BioFreeze bottle too!)

Anne: It sounds like you had a lot of quiet to yourself yesterday. Was it a good thing or was it hard to be alone with your grief? I'm thinking of you, praying for you and giving you a hugs!

Happy: I'm sorry you couldn't get out on the water yesterday. The 3 big summer holidays always make for busy times on the lakes. Hopefully you can get out again soon and take your friends.

I hate to hear that the contractor for the deck is putting you guys off. I think if he doesn't show up in 2 weeks, that we Wordlies all need to show up at his house and get your money back!

Shad: I agree with Happy and Anne...politics everywhere sure are a mess!

Laura: I would love to see pictures of your garage door when you get it done. It sounds like it will be very nice.

I LOVE my 80's music and bands. I have seen Loverboy 4 times and will see them again if they come around.

I'm sorry to hear that Coal is not well and that in the future you might have to make some kind decisions for him. In the meantime, taking him on shorter walks and things will be good for him.

Ceejay: how did it go working the holiday weekend? You are now about 7 weeks from retirement! Can you believe it?

Also, I wanted to congratulate you on the 3lb loss at the doctors office! I bet that made the doctor smile! They always smile when we lose weight.

Hi to Dee and Michelle!

I need to get a move on and get my shower so we can leave on time.

I'll see you all tomorrow!

Morning girls,

Well it's a sad day for most of the country today - back to work after a long weekend I was talking to my sister over the weekend. Her DH was off for a 10 day vacation - they stayed at home because he just likes to chill out and be away from work. At one point she found him sitting outside on the patio staring at nothing for the longest time. She asked him what was going on and he said "I'm pretending I'm retired" and had the biggest grin on his face. Yeah, it's something like that...

I have another busy week ahead - I need to get those peaches canned. I made a pie late last night - it came out great. Got the thrift shop today, the shelter board meeting tomorrow and I need to gather some info for my discussion topics. Thursday I have to go for the B12 shot I forgot about last week, get the MRI for my knee and I have bingo where I will be left along for about 2 hours to handle the show. We are supposed to have a rainy week ahead so no boating although the weekend is looking nice. I'm not sure where yesterday flew to but it did and I never did get to the laundry I needed to do. I went to town to get my eggs from the farmers market. Picked up some bacon and pork chops, dill, garlic scapes, new red potatoes, onions, radishes and bread from the Mennonite ladies. Then I went over to the thrift shop. I saw on Saturday that they had an extra large cat litter pan like I have at home. This is a great pan for the older kitty because it gives her more room to move about as it's literally about 3 feet long. It takes 2 boxes of litter to fill it. Which makes it a job to clean. I figure with a pan to switch out I can let the litter get down in the active one and then empty it out and immediately swap it with the clean one. It's a little more complicated than regular pans but works well for the cats. One of the board members as well as one of our "used to be regulars but now has a full time job" were in there substituting for the regular staff who took off for the holiday. I noticed our regular Monday staff never works a holiday. Must be nice. Anyhow, I did get a chance to chat with them and there are always questions and sometimes we make decisions about the layout so that took a while. Came home, made grilled chicken for dinner, prepped the peaches for pie. Neither of us felt like going out to see the fireworks this year. DH went into the hot tub but I was cleaning up and went in later. As I was sitting there I kept seeing flashes in the sky - not sure if it was fireworks or approaching lightning so I decided to err on the safe side and get out of the tub after about a 10 minute soak. I was on my feet alot yesterday and my knees and feet were really hurting. Took some Motrin and went to bed. Such an exciting life!

Susie - I hope you have a great time at home on your stay-cation. The King's Island trip sounds like alot of fun. I hope you're not needing that Biofreeze bottle TOO much after today. I hope the crowds are down and the lines for the rides short! Yay on finding a missing Fitbit. It was just hiding

Laura - when we first moved to AH, we could sit on end of our property at the corner and clearly watch the MP fireworks. Did that for several years until the trees grew up and blocked the view. That's where we'd go until it got really crowded over there with traffic and all. We did go to the racetrack one year but that was surprisingly not very impressive. Sigh.. that's really sad about Coal. I guess that's a part of aging but we hate to see it happen. I hope he can be comfortable for many years yet. "Here Come the Mummies" - what a great name for a band!

Annie - I need to stay home more and be your kind of busy. How nice to have a quiet evening with just you and C and Sassy again. Did you skip the veggie garden this year? I can't remember...

Shad - are you naturally left hand dominant or just ambidextrous? Was S's party this weekend?

Hello to the rest of the chicks

We had lots of animals come by yesterday - the deer were especially hungry because we are literally down to the last cups of seed and corn. We scraped together what we could - I feel badly because the nursing moms are hungry and when the 2 bucks show up, they push the girls out. I finally got the girls eating when I looked outside and the darn bear was out there. He's a youngin' probably just booted from Mom. He was chasing the deer - literally running after them as they hesitantly approached the perimeter with a "hey that's MY food". Always something out there. DH chased the bear away but I guess he came back this morning.

I hope it's quiet in town and everyone from out of state WENT BACK HOME.

I have to get ready for the day. Have a good one all.
