Maggie -- We had thunderstorms late this afternoon with more coming during the night. I don't think we got much rain though. I'm surprised you are still having such hot days. We've talked about going back to Yellowstone; we were there in '90 after the fire so I'm sure it is looking better now. There are lots of places I would like to see stateside -- I'm trying to talk Bob into a bus trip to Washington, D.C. some time. I have some laundry to fold and then I'm heading off to bed. I didn't do much today but I'm tired tonight.

gma22 08-19-2011 05:09 AM

Good morning ladies! I hope your day is starting out well. It is fairly cool this morning but pretty humid still. The overall day to day temps have fallen, but I hope they stay close to 90 during our vacation as the swimming pool is outdoors at this hotel. I love to swim outdoors, but Jack has to have the water seriously warm to go swimming and really warm to swim outside. He just doesn't like cooler water below around 90 degrees or so to swim in.

Ok, I told you I wanted to lengthen that one project, but when I took out the decreases to lengthen it, I found you couldn't follow the pattern so took it almost completely out and started over. I am not almost finished with it. I have about an inch of length then can do the decreases and be finished with it. I never know when something is good enough. I ordered the yarn for the slippers this morning so am anxious to get that. The company is in Wisconsin so I hope they ship out by Monday so I can get it by the end of the week or so. I want to hurry and get mine made and felted so I can take them on vacation. Don't know why I didn't think of it before now. I also have most of Jackson's sock finished so I am rolling along there as well. I imagine I will be knitting on T's socks or the slippers or my sweater at the surgery center in a couple weeks. I will be taking all three so I can do what I want along with an audio book and a regular ebook so I have enough to do. I think once they take him back, the surgery is about 60-90 minutes if I remember right.

This weekend is commissary weekend oh joy, but I need groceries! We had plain old gr sirloin cheeseburgers for dinner last night and Jack said they hit the spot! We are having chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and a veggie tonight. I guess I'll have to get my tenderizing hand in shape to do the pounding.

Maggie: We are going to take the cruise next year and go to Vegas the following year, 2013, then probably only do small trips as we will be heading towards Jack's retirement and having quite a bit less money, but that's ok. We have enjoyed our bigger trips over the last several years very much.

Jean: I have been to D.C. once and I was 7 months pregnant with Jay. We were being transferred and going to my sister's wedding too, so we took a couple days and did one of those bus tours in D.C., but considering my size at the time, it was not enjoyable. I walked up the stairs to see the Lincoln Memorial and couldnt' get back down. We almost missed the bus to take us back to the hotel! Jack weighed almost 10 lbs so there was a lot of baby I was lugging around. I think I enjoyed the Smithsonian the most, but truth be told, we got to tour the White House back when they still did tours and that was something else. I still have pictures of the outside as you couldn't take pictures inside. No one gets to do that anymore, which is a shame.

Well, I best go. Fortune is woofing because I am sitting here instead of in the recliner where he can cuddle back up with me and Jack still has about half an hour to sleep. He goes back to his regular hours starting Monday so it will be fun adjusting Fortune back to that and me too for that matter. :) Have a great weekend everyone! Faye

Jean 08-19-2011 09:37 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! It's another cool sunny morning in my corner of the world. The weatherman says we are heading back into the 90s next week; I thought we were done with "hot." :dizzy: I've got to vacuum and dust today. We have a funeral, in Sioux City tomorrow, for a lady that Bob grew up with. The funeral will be in the church we were married in so I'm kind of anxious to see the church again. In the evening there is a retirement party for the local farm vet. He and Bob spent some quality time together when Bob used to do hog chores for his friend. I think the high light was helping with a C-section. Next week is my week to cover the church office in the mornings. I hope the secretary found someone to do the afternoons as that makes a long day when there isn't anything I can do.

"Gma" -- You have lots of knitting projects going on at one time! I would get confused trying to remember where I was on each pattern. I hope the commissary has everything on your list, and your shopping trip is a quick in and out. Where do you want to cruise to? The gal we are going to Maui with just sent me an email saying there are no SUVs available for the time we will be in Maui. :( We just rent one vehicle and share the cost so guess we will go with a full size car in order to get all of our luggage in the trunk. We call the place "Rent A Wreck" because it is located away from the airport and the vehicles are older, have scratches and door dings. However, they are much cheaper than the brand name rentals. Anyhow, I would still like to do a cruise someday.

I need to get busy and get a few things done this morning! Have a fantastic Friday and enjoy! :D

Maggie 08-19-2011 11:45 AM

Finally Friendy Friday

:comp: GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood and expected to stay under 100 this day. I feel so sorry for those folks in AZ getting that horrific dust storm that lasted over an hour. That gets into every nook and cranney in car and home. And this is their third one this year. That chicken we did last night was really good but just needed some more spicing up which I can fix next time we do it. Will did do it on the grill after all and I set the timer and told him when to turn it according to the recipe. I love it when I try a new recipe and it is so tasty and a do again. I have yet to decide what to do for dinner this day. After all I am just finishing my first cup of coffee. :o I clipped a nice little chart out of a magazine that is a "Chile Heat Index" with pictures which has them in categories from "mild" to "off the charts" arranged in their classifications. It will be helpful when I ask Will to buy some fresh chiles to show him a picture of what I am wanting. I had planted in our garden that got destroyed the ones that I knew I would be using and could have them on hand. My plan was to prepare them and freeze them, but alas, Mother Nature took them all away. :( When I want to cook a certain dish it is always nice to have all the ingredients on hand that go in it and not have to make a trip to the store for an item. I have just about decided what to do for dinner this day. "Glazed Sweet & Sour Grilled Pork Chops" it will be. They are so yummy done that way.

DONNA FAYE I am sure you will be able to find fun and interesting things to do for vacations after Jack does retire. Folks on a "fixed income" do quite well in going places. It all depends on what you want to do as to where you will go then. I know you don't like to "camp" but there are other places. ;) I got a chuckle out of Jack wanting his swimming water so warm. He would not like swimming and riding the waves in the ocean at all.

JEAN Take a book along when you work at that shop and no custumers come in the afternoon. Might help the time go by a bit faster for you. :D That will be fun to see if that church building is the same or if they have made any changes in it.

Have a lovely afternoon Magnolias.

Jean 08-19-2011 11:55 AM

Maggie -- Your dinner menu sounds good. :T I think we are having grilled chicken breasts and whatever else I dream up . . . probably a salad. I need to get some fresh fruit later today. I'm only working in the mornings next week. I do take along magazines or a book but sometimes there are enough people coming in and out that I can't concentrate for very long. I have a perm one afternoon, and we are meeting with our lawyer to update our will. We did go back for a Sunday church service, several years ago when we were in SC for a wedding and stayed overnight. At that time the church looked pretty much the same as it did in 1967.

gma22 08-20-2011 08:08 AM

Good morning to you all! It looks pretty overcast this morning so I hope we don't get any rain as we have commissary shopping to do today. I am going to have to go to Target and Walmart to get a few things the commissary doesn't carry like the tiny pasta for Fortune's food, more WW ice cream, and I buy some premade ham salad for sandwiches at Walmart.

I finished Jackson's socks so have them done and have Thomas's first one on the needle. The place I bought the yarn has already shipped and it is UPS so will have that next week so I can start on them. I think I will make mine first and felt them so I know how fast this yarn felts.

Jean: We have booked a cruise to the Caribbean with stops at Nassau, St Thomas, and St Maartins. Jack has always wanted to take me to St Thomas since he went there when he was in the Navy so we finally put our deposit down to go Sept of next year right around my birthday. I have been trying to convince my younger sister and her hubby to go with us, but I don't think they are going to go.

Maggie: At least not swimming in the Atlantic or Pacific as it never warms up, but we are looking forward to go into the warm gulf waters when we cruise as I hear they are very warm. I however, do not like walking barefoot into the sea so will get some water shoes from Land's End to wear. I may look stupid, but euwwww I can't stand walking into the unknown, though that water is quite clear and you can see the bottom for quite aways out.

I noticed yesterday that Jack has a rehab appt just the next day after surgery. I didn't remember him doing that last time, but he said he did. We don't pay for any of the followup medical appts, but we do have to pay a copay for each rehab so it will cost us about $85 or so, which isn't too bad. The surgical center will cost us $25 and he paid his $12 copay to the doctor when he went in this last week. I have his pain meds to get and the most they will cost us is $9 so we come off pretty well all the way around. His finally surgery will come right before he retires from the city to get his hand fixed. Looks like they will have to replace his thumb joint in that one and it is a much longer recoup time.

Well, sounds like Jack is done showering so I best get upstairs and get a shower. We need to leave her by 8:15 so we can go by the bank and get some cash and get to the commissary by 9 and get in and out. Have a great Saturday!!!! Faye

QuilterInVA 08-20-2011 12:44 PM

Good afternoon, ladies. 81 degrees right now but we are smoky so I have to stay in the house. I never knew that smoke follows water and concentrates over it. That was in the newspaper earlier in the week because the rivers have been so smoky. That's wat I get for living with nearby water. It's been so bad you have to drive with the headlights on and it is nearly dark in the early afternoon. As soon as the wind shifts, it starts to clear. The fire has caught the peat on fire and that can smolder for years. So have they only have it 10% contained. There was a picture in the paper of a mother bear and her cub sitting on the edge of the road peacefully watching the firefighters.

Faye, your cruise sounds lovely - do you need someone to carry your baggage? LOL I'm sure Jack's thumb joint replacement will be worse than his knee. When I dislocated my thumb I was amazed at how hard it was to do a simple thing like pull up and fasten my pants, get a bra on, button a shirt.

Jean, was the church as you remembered it?

Maggie, we have a new WW cookbook - "Fruits & Veggies A to Z" that has 175 recipes and wonderful pictures and descriptions of all kinds of vegetables and how they taste and how to prepare them. $9.95. I'm making Velvety Corn Soup with Edamame for supper tonight.

I have housework to do today and laundry. Have a great day!

Maggie 08-20-2011 01:42 PM

Sunny Warm Saturday

:comp: GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is in the 80's today with thundershowers. We have not had to water our lawn but a couple times this summer. Not much going on around here this day. I am going to make Apricot-Glazed Pork Kebabs this day ~ another meal to cook the meat on the grill day. This is another one out of the new "Cooking Light" magazine that I have all the ingredients on hand for. :p Will went to the farmers market this day and brought back some home made soap and the phone number of the local lady that makes it and said if I like it I could buy more from her. He got some lovely large globes of garlic and onions and mulberry jelly which is sugar free. I have never had mulberry jelly so this will be a treat to try. Beanie is in the hall way having a blast playing with a plastic milk carton. Why buy him toys ~ he loves packages and cartons. I have been working on a new church address booklet for this group here since I made one last October it is time to up date it. There have been a few changes. What I do is tape the pages together and put them up on the bulletin board and have folks check to see if their name and information is correct and give them a final date to do that before I take it all down and start to work making them. I include phone numbers and e-mail addresses. I also have a page of everyones name with brithdays and anniversaries. Makes it easy to check the list each month and see who to send cards to if one wishes to do so since the list goes month by month. The finished booklet is 3 1/2 X 5 so it fits nicely in purse or pocket.

DONNA FAYE They sure can make tiny pasta now days can't they. How many varities of dog food do you make now? I have a nice pair of water walkers to use in streams when we gold pan. They sure save your feet and drain real nicely. You will find some that will work nicely for you. Thumbs are so important in making the hand work properly aren't they. It's amazing how one misses the use of it when it is hurt or damaged. I tucked mine under right now and couldn't pick up my coffee container with one hand.
Thumbs are important members of ones hand for sure.

SUSAN I will keep an eye on the books offered on the WW web page and hopefully they will add that one soon. It isn't there just yet. It sounds like a real good one and as far as I know they have never done one exclusively on fruits and veggies. I will just have to have it. :p That soup sounds yummy. Yep the air around the rivers is heavy and keeps the smoke down. Remember that song "Smoke on the Water." Can't remember if that is the name of it or who sang it but in my head I hear the tune. :o I hope the wind continues to blow it away from your area.

GAIL Dear friend of mine ~ please come back.

We are off to Home Depot. Going to get some table legs to go on the computer printer table Will is building for me. He will stain it to match my wooden desk. :p Life is good.

Type at y'all later.

Jean 08-20-2011 03:45 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! The sun has been in and out with a breeze now and then. Strange day for weather! We went to Sioux City for the funeral this morning. We were about a half hour early so sat in the parking lot. Finally two more cars pulled in beside us. We weren't expecting a huge crowd, and there are two parking lots so we figured the other cars might be on the other side of the church. Finally two more cars pulled in beside us. We walked up to the door and there is a sign saying the funeral is next Saturday! Both of children live in the Sioux City area so have no clue why they are waiting so long. Anyhow, some guy pulled in and yelled that the funeral home gave the newspaper the wrong date! Bob knew a couple of the "kids" who belonged to another friend of his mom's, so we did visit with them. We stopped at Menards and McDs for a quick lunch, then headed home.

"Gma" -- Having a definite cruise date next year will be so fun to look forward to! I hope your sister and hubby decide to go with you. I think it's fun to travel with another couple. :) I don't like walking in water where I can't see the bottom. Our lake has an abundance of seaweed, not to mention "stuff" that washes into the shoreline, and I don't like taking a chance! One of our bell choir members had a finger joint replaced because of arthritis. It took a long time to heal so that she could use it properly again, but it finally is ok now.

Susan -- I didn't know that smoke follows water. I learned something today! I hope nobody bothered the bear and her cub -- that would be a cute picture. We didn't get inside the church since the funeral is next Saturday. The area around the church used to be the lawyers and doctors kind of neighborhood. It has really gone downhill and a few kids who walked by kept looking at our car. I said to Bob that I hoped they wouldn't come back and try anything while we were in the church. Was your lock-in last night? I didn't think we would see you today. ;)

Maggie -- We stopped at an intersection of a small town on our way home from Sioux City. There were two pickups with tents set up and loaded with fresh produce. Everything looked so good :T I wanted to buy alot, but we can't eat it fast enough. It's nice of you to create a church book. I'm thinking we will probably be doing a picture directory next summer/fall before the college kids and snowbirds leave the area. It's a good idea to include the dates and email addresses. That makes me think of cell phone #s -- I got a political call on my cell phone the other day! I didn't look at the # and answered it.

Guess I will do some laundry. I've changed clothes and will figure out what I'm wearing to the retirment party later this afternoon. Hope you all are having a nice relaxing day! Enjoy! :D

Maggie 08-20-2011 04:33 PM

Back To Yack

:comp: GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

We didn't find any legs that we particully wanted for my little computer printer table so Will can make some on his lathe. ;)

JEAN That is too bad you had a mix up on those dates. Are you going back for the real time? I am so glad that some folks veggie gardens didn't get totaled by that hail storm so we can at least get some fresh home grown items. The folks that have items for sale aught to make a good showing this year for their home growns are in demand. I think they will be there each Saturday to sell their goods. The soap bar Will bought me smells just like soap meaning no perfume and is cream color with green swirls running through it. It measures 2 X 3 inches and is an inch thick. I think I will put it on a cute little dish in my bathroom. I use pump in the bathroom and at the kitchen sink. Right now my only soap dish which is enameled metal with holes to dran into a matching underneath thingie is being used for my Sal-Ammoniac block to rub my hot soldering tip on to remove oxidation buildup. And I want to keep it that way for it is working for that. If I continue to buy these blocks of soap I need to get a new soap dish. :p

Everyone have a lovely afternoon.

gma22 08-21-2011 09:49 AM

Good morning to you all. I talked to Gail a couple days ago and she and her dgds and dd are in Va Beach on a visit. She is doing fine, just busy as usual.

Got through the commissary fairly quickly, but they hadn't gotten their new stock in or at least hadn't put it out, so the pickin's were thin in areas. I got everything I needed though, but I do have to go to Walmart's still and get a couple things the commissary doesn't carry or only has big bags of. So, that job is done for another couple weeks. Next payday Jack will have just had his surgery so I imagine I will just get a few groceries at a time in town until we go on vacation because buying $300 worth of groceries, hauling them in and putting them all away by myself is not something I look forward to.

We got his pain prescription yesterday and drove by the building where his surgery will be so we knew exactly where it was so he is now all set.

I made a triple batch of lowfat buttermilk biscuits this morning along with a double batch of the Kruteaz ff blueberry muffins and will put them all in freezer bags and freeze them then we can have them whenever we want one. The biscuits are a very nice size and only 2 pts. I use ff buttermilk and I can't believe it's not butter instead of shortening. They are very good and the muffins are great. You can have things that are tastey and not zooming in pts, people just have to put in a little effort. I saw on tv the other day new Lean Cuisine snacks and one of which is a spinich and artichoke dip with pita bread so I bought one to try at the commissary.
We had some yummy strawberry shortcake with lowfat lb cake, strawberries and ff redi whip last night. It was a wonderful treat.

Jean: So sorry you trip was a bust, though I guess a funeral isn't a whoop dee doo time anyway. At least you got out and about. We had a whopper of a rain storm when we were out yesterday and of course got soaked. then, early this morning a big lightening, thunder and rain storm that knocked out the power for awhile. I woke up in a sweat and the house really hot. It is back to being in the 90's and very humid with the rain and such so it gets uncomfortable fast. I have a good book for you to read or audiobook if you have something to listen with. It is called One Dangerous Lady by Jane Stanton Hitchcock. It is all about New York society and the upper crust and has a bunch of murders all thrown in for good measure. It is a great read. I just finished for the second time on an audiobook. I had forgotten I had listened to it way back when I was "training" to do a 5K several years ago and was walking so much everyday.

Maggie: Sorry you didn't find what you wanted for table legs. It would have cut down on the time to put it together.

Today I have to get out and go to Walmart's but I am still in pj's and not very get up and go yet even though I made all the food this morning. Just sitting here with a fresh biscuit with a bit of blackberry jam and a carton of oJ. Doctor wants me to get more potassium without pills if I can so I have been having bananas and oj to help it. The pills I take robs me of potassium since then are a diuretic.

Oh and last but not least, please put a young woman named Missy on your prayer list. I don't remember her last name, but she is suffering from cancer and has had several surgeries with organ removals and now has to have another which is devasting emotionally for her because of what it involves. She is a friend of Kelly's and Jay's age so is a young woman. She has an adorable family and it breaks my heart what she is going through.

Hava nice day all. I am going to get some work done. Faye

Jean 08-21-2011 02:09 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's a beautiful day in my neighborhood! We went to church and Bob just left for the lake to do some more repair work. Jason mowed yesterday so Bob won't have to do that. I opted to stay home and declutter the kitchen, pick up Ernie toys that he as scattered willy-nilly around the house, laundry, and get ready for my "work" week at church. :jig:

"Gma" -- I knew that Gail, her daughters, and granddaughters were spending a weekend together at VA Beach but forgot when it was. I'm glad you got to touch base with her. Your biscuits and muffins sound delicious. :T - fresh bread of any kind is my downfall! Our temperatures are supposed to be back in the uppers 80s with a 90+ degree day later in the week. We've just had strange weather this spring and summer! I will go online and see if our library has the book you mentioned. I will keep Missy in my prayers; it's sad :( that young people have such major health challenges so early in their lives.

Maggie -- Yes, we will go back for the funeral next week. I'm just glad we live close enough to do that. :) It's nice that Will has the tools and talent to make your table legs.

I hear the dryer buzzing so time to change loads. Have a fun rest of the day and enjoy! :D

Maggie 08-21-2011 04:59 PM

Sunny Hot Sunday

:comp: GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is another hot day here in the heartland and I am so thankful for air conditioning. Pot-luck after church was a good one for I got to pick and choose what to eat and still stay on program. Everything I ever take is all eaten up so that is a good thing. I think for dinner we are going out to Applebees after chruch this evening. I can eat OP there also. :p I am not doing much this day but staying back here in my office. The dogs are happy to be inside.

DONNA FAYE Looks like you have some good things in your freezer with making those biscuits and muffins. I use a small cutter for my biscuits and they are made with that low fat Bisquick and only 2 points each and yummy. I love those Krustaez products. I have some cran-orange ones in the freezer. :p I too have to replinish my potassium and have to watch it also. I am sure glad I like fresh fruit for it helps. Our doctors are on the same page with the bananas and oranges.:p Geting the potassium naturally is so much better than the suppliments.

JEAN Well I gotta tell ya ~ that salad was a hit and I was asked for the recipe so I made some cards this afternoon to take to them tonight. I called it Corney Dump Salad and used Miracle Whip instead of the mayo since neither of us like mayo and I don't have any in the house. I also made little cubes of the cheese instead of shredding it and it made it look festive with the other items in it. Yeppers it is a keeper ~ Thanks for it. Will just thought he could buy legs and have it done quicker but I am not in a hurry and he can do that table when he gets the time to do it for he has the "can do." :D

Have a great afternoon Magnolias.

Jean 08-21-2011 09:38 PM

Maggie -- I imagine you are at Applebee's about now. :T I'm glad the salad went over well at the pot luck; it's certainly easy enough to make. I like it because I usually have everything on hand, except the chips, to make it for unexpected guests. It stayed a beautiful day all day here; I hope your heat goes south instead of north!

gma22 08-22-2011 05:55 AM

Good morning gals. It is back to being warm and very humid. The lovely weather was wonderful while it lasted. I woke up to a mess this morning. Fortune had thrown up in several places in the living room. I don't know if he got into something outside again or what. I will just have to keep an eye on him and see what develops. I did go ahead and feed him though so we shall see. He is bad about licking so he may have licked something with fuzz and upchucked because he has done that before.

Jack goes back to fall hours today so he isn't up yet, but I had to go to the bathroom so decided just to get up and stay up. I have things I can do and want to work some more on Thomas's socks as the yarn for the slippers will be here sometime this week and I will want to get those knitted up and done when they come so I can give them to the ladies when I have to go and get more meds for Fortune in a couple weeks.

Jean: I am a sucker for fresh bread too so I rarely make it anymore or if I do, I use those frozen dough balls and make Jack and I just one roll apiece so we don't sit there and scarf down bread and butter. Have you ever had that cinnamon bread from Pepperidge farm? It is very tasty but something like 4 pts apiece per slice so I don't buy it either. I like raisin bread toasted and such and bought the cinnamon stuff and then got home and found you could almost have a sandwich for what a piece of that bread cost you. :D Hope your week at the church works out fine and dandy with no problems.

Maggie: I imagine your salad went over gangbusters. It is one of those salads you can adapt to almost anything and make it fun.

Well I guess I better get going. Fortune is barking at me so he probably wants out. Have a good start to your week. Faye
