Good morning everyone. It is lovely and cool here this morning. It is great waking up to cooler temps and not so much humidity. I was able to turn the thermostat up on the ac units to give them some rest too, which was nice.

Well, I finished the first of Jackson's socks. Real fast knit. I am making Thomas's exactly alike so Jackson can feel like a big guy. The yarn is called Tree Fort. How appropriate for a rough and tumble boy. He is really growing. His dad posted a picture of him getting a how towel treatment when he went and got his haircut and I couldn't believe how much he has grown. Thomas keeps shooting up too. They just are growing up too fast.

I finished a good book yesterday. It was one I had gotten on ebooks from the library. I thought I had read all of Dick Francis's books, but I am finding some of the older ones I haven't read so am enjoying them. I am currently reading an old Raymond Chandler book, which is fun as the descriptions of clothing and hair and such, which were so "it" back then seem so archaic today. Phillip Marlowe in the first chapter describes his "hot" look of a baby blue suit! It is a fun read though can drag a bit. I am also listening while I knit to another J A Jance J P Beaumont character series. It is always a good read or listen to.

I am going to be chopping up canteloupes and a whole watermelon and baggin it up today so it doesn't spoil. I have been putting it off, but it has to be done. We are having mongolian beef and rice tonight. I found a decent recipe and it uses a lower fat beef so it has good pt value. I keep trying to expand our horizons so to speak.

Jean: I got the giggles over your "dump and chop" salad. I bought salad fixins and am going to have that for lunch today myself. Glad your church monies were a fast work.

Well I best be going. I have things I want to get done this morning and want to get back to knitting and get the socks all done. Have a great Tuesday all!!! Faye

Good Morning, Flowers! It started to thunder while I was in the shower; that makes me a bit nervous because of the sky light near the tub. We did get a 1/2" of rain which the crops need. Bob watered my flowers last night so they are water logged this morning. I sat and watched the Today Show for awhile after Bob left for the office. I can tell it's going to be a lazy day for me as I have no ambition whatsoever. Bob's annual dinner meeting is tonight with a show after the meal. They are called "A Touch of Broadway" with 16 guys and gals singing and dancing accompanied by a 3 piece band. They have a different theme every year and use props w/o actually changing clothes; the guys wear tuxes and the gals have long dresses with lot of sparkling jewelry. They usually perform at our church in February after the prime rib dinner so we get to see them twice.

"Gma" -- Thanks for starting the new thread. I just finished reading The Lincoln Lawyer and picked out another book by the same author. Is J A Jance the author of the series you mentioned? I can Google the name for more information. My salad last night was a success! :cheer: No one had ever had it which surprised me because I got the recipe from the newspaper and also an out of town friend who had made it. One gal, who is an excellent "fancy" cook, asked if I would share the recipe. She was surprised when I said it was a "dump and chop" easy salad! When you don't get to see Jackson very often he will grow up even faster. I really like the colors in his socks; I'm sure he will get a kick out of having socks just like Thomas does.

Maggie -- I wondered where you were yesterday! ;) I like to go to Applebees and there is always a line if it is close to meal time. :congrat: on the maintain this week! :cp:

I need to get dressed and do something constructive this morning. I have lots of chores to choose from. :o Have a terrific Tuesday and enjoy! :D

Titilating Tuesday

:comp: GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is supposed to be in the 90's somewhere & mostly sunny this day and that is fine with me. Tomorrow is said we are in for some thunderstorms. We don't plan on going anywhere this day and I haven't done anything of value this morning so far. Dogs woke me up earlier than usual and I am just easing into the world. After I leave here I will go to the kitchen and start the process of making that Chile Verde and get it all in the crock pot. I am sitting here typing inbetween yawns. Will has decided what he wants to do for his birthday which is Sept 1. There is a restaurant in a very small place called McCracken which is about 30 miles from here where the chef is, that used to work for "the Donald," that they say does a wonderful prime rib. It has been a long time since we have had prime rib. The very best we ever had was in a little place in WY and after the chef's wife shot and killed him we didn't get it there anymore. If that is what Will wants for his meal then that is where we will go ~ to McCracken. :p I'll be sure to save my weekly points allowance for that meal. I haven't decided where I want to go on my day.

DONNA FAYE Isn't it wonderful that the temps are getting lower. Sure makes life easier. I imagine your swelling subsides when the temps lower also and it makes you more comfortable. Those boys are sure growing up fast. It is neat that you are making the sox alike. That will certainly put a smile on their faces to have them alike. I love that pattern.

JEAN Isn't it nice that you can make a dish and everyone eats it all up. The Lincoln Lawyer is a good one. Do you read Ludlums books? When I get a good book I marithon it and so I have to plan on a block of time in which to do that. Nothing else gets done when I am into a book. :book2:

Everyone have a lovely day. I am waking up now and can get the day going. Type at y'all later.

QuilterInVA 08-16-2011 11:37 AM

Good morning, ladies! A lovely day and only 78 degrees so far. It was 68 when I got up this morning.

I had a good time with Sandy and we went to a couple of quilt shops on Saturday. I didn't buy anything - wasn't I a good girl! We always stay up way later than I do normally and I was so tired last night I went to bed at 8:00 and didn't wake up until 6:30 this morning! I feel well rested today and ready for the world. PT also takes it out of me. She has my knee bending a lot better but there is still some more stretching to get it to bend correctly. I go back to the doc next week and hopefully I can return to real exercise in the pool.

Maggie, congratulations on your maintain. It's always better than a gain and I think it helps our body to get adjusted along the way so we don't hit a plateau and stay there for weeks. Prime rib sounds really good. I haven't had any since Christmas.

Jean, post your salad recipe. I'm always looking for salads to take to covered dishes and for myself.

Faye, how about sharing the mongolian beef recipe. I love the sock colors. Jackson will surely feel so grown up to have socks like Thomas. I hope the Elvis folks don't get in your way too much. My library changed to a new ebook service and we can now return our books when we are done with them instead of having to wait. I love it! Between what I "read" on ebooks and the real books I read, I go through a ton in no time. I've been saving books to give to Elaine when she gets back from Idaho (she's there from May until September) and I have 53 books in the bag already. I only bought one myself. My friends keep me well supplied. Adora and I went to see Harry Potter one last time yesterday. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD so I can have my own personal marathon and watch them all in order. Have you signed up for www.pottermore.com? More about Harry! I saw a movie on tv of Rowlings life. Very interesting. Did you see it?

Nothing happening this week until Friday when I will go to Bella for lock-in.

Have a great day!

Jean 08-16-2011 11:21 PM

Maggie -- We are supposed to get more rain tonight but the stars were out as we drove home from the meeting. The meal and entertainment were excellent as always. The president of the board has no clue how to conduct a meeting and it was rather embarrassing. None of the board members who spoke were any more confident speaking in front of a group -- lots of "ums" and "ahs." :( I've not read any of the Ludlums books; I will have to look for them.

Susan -- It sounds like your weather is finally cooling down. :cp: I'm glad you got a good nights sleep last night, and hope tonight is more of the same.

3 C Salad

1 can whole kernel corn, drained
1 can shoe peg corn, drained
green pepper to taste, chopped
onion to taste, chopped
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
1/2 - 3/4 bag of Chili Cheese Frito chips, crushed slightly, add just before serving

I usually just put chips on the top, with the rest in a bowl for people to add after the top layer is gone. They will get soggy if mixed in and not eaten right away. (One gal said she has used Mexican corn with red and green peppers already in the corn.)

I am heading off to bed to read for awhile. See you all tomorrow! :D

Maggie 08-17-2011 12:21 AM

:comp: GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

The Chili Verde is done now and it sure tastes good. We had a bowl for dinner. :p Now if anyone wants to add any "heat" to it they can but it is great for those who don't like it mo hotta da betta like I do.:D I always add some red chili flakes to my serving. Tomorrow we will deliver some of the Chili Verde to our friend at that Mexican restaurant for we found out he will be at work then. When Will got back from the car place he said they ordered a part to fix the problem and it won't cost us anything. The Jeep is still doing that shifting hesitation thing and they said when they changed out that part last visit that if it continued that behavior bring it back. The current problem, and has been the problem all along, is a relay thingie that sends signals to the working parts or some such thing. It is sending false signals. So he will take it back on Thursday for them to install it when the part comes in. This mechanic has a direct line to the "big folks" that know what to do.

SUSAN I am glad you had such a nice visit with your friend and didn't spend any money while enjoying those excursions to the shops. :bravo: It is hard to visit those shops and not buy a thing. Isn't it nice to have a good PT gal that knows her stuff. That makes a big difference on your progress. Soon you will be back at your swimming routine. Yep, soon.

JEAN Shoepeg corn is that white sweet kind isn't it? Your recipe sounds yummy and one that Will and I will surely like. Thanks for posting it for it sounds like a good one to take to potlucks also.

I'm heading off to beddy bye now.
All y'all have a lovely nights sleep.

Jean 08-17-2011 09:00 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! It's another sunny cool morning in my corner of the world. I need to run some errands this morning, and want to stop at the computer store to see what is available in laptops. I'm meeting with the gift shop treasurer this afternoon; I hope I remember what I think I learned from a couple weeks ago. :crossed:

Maggie -- I'm sure your friend will enjoy your chili verde; I think adding the extra red chili flakes would make it too hot for me. :dizzy: I do hope your Jeep is fixed this time. Yes, shoepeg corn is "white" or at least a more drab yellow yellow. I've used the yellow and white mixed corn also.

I have my "to do" list ready to go so better get a move on. Have a wonderful Wednesday and enjoy! :D

Good morning to you all! I hope you are not slooshing around in rain. We sure are here. I heard thunder around 7 and it has been pouring down ever since. The crops need a steady rain not a down pour and the last time we were out at the commissary the corn looked absolutely horrible. It was all yellow and parched, no tassels, nothing so it was in bad shape. The cotton thrives in that hot dry stuff so it was all lovely with the little flower buds already out on it. It has a very long growing season Jack said, about 6 months or so.

Susan: Glad to share it. I am putting it on here exactly as it is written, but you can exchange the sugar for Splenda or whatever if you wish and I will let you figure out the pts plus servings and such. One thing is make sure you tenderize the steak well before marinading because the marinade has no acid, ie vinegar or citrus juice so it will not break down the meat like other marinades do. Jack really liked it. We went to the HP movie twice and enjoyed it both times. I look forward to it coming out on dvd too so we have the whole set and I can do a marathon of the whole shebang if I want too! I haven't joined that website. I haven't even looked at it yet. We use the ebook service that allows you to return them, but our audiobook service you have to wait for whatever lending period of time you chose. It is sort of a pain as you have to download the audiobook to your computer, then download that to the overdrive media system, then transfer it to your iphone or Kindle or whatever. The ebooks you can get straight from the ap onto your Iphone.

Spicy Mongolian Beef

1 lb sirloin or flank steak, pounded and tenderized
1/4 c low sodium soy sauce (my preference in this case)
1 Tblspoon Hoisin sauce
1 Tblspoon sesame oil (I just used canola as I couldn't find any anywhere)
2 tspspoons white sugar
1 Tblspoon minced garlic
1 Tblspoon red pepper flakes or to taste (I used cayenne but didn't put enough in)
1 Tbl peanut oil (again I used canola)
1 bunch green onions thinly sliced

Whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, sugar, garlic, and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Toss beef with marinade, cover, and refrigerate 1 hour to overnight.
2. Heat peanut oil in a wok or large, nonstick skillet over high heat. Add the green onions, and cook for 5 to 10 seconds before stirring in the beef. Cook and stir until the beef is no longer pink and is beginning to brown, about 5 minutes

Jean: Did you like the Lincoln Lawyer? You should read all his other books, the Michael Halley series and Harry Bosch series. The J A Jance series of J P Beaumont is a detective a lot like Harry Bosch. It is a great read and there are tons of them. Try and start with the first one. I have had to bounce around with them and they should be read in order. Did you skylight leak? My sister has a skylight and they were always having trouble with it leaking so they finally took it out and put in a permanent glass I think, I am not sure frankly.

Maggie: Way too hot for chili here! I like to make soups in the fall and winter, chili, potato soup, veggie soup and the like. Jack is pretty particular what kinds he will eat, but he does like quite a variety.

Jack has his pre op appt today. I was going to go with him, but I starting feeling icky after breakfast. I don't know why, but I am having abit of a tummy queasiness so I think I best stay home. They have one bathroom there and they get business. Would hate to get sick and the bathroom be in use! :o

I started making plans, buying tickets etc, for our vacation months ago and if you remember a couple months ago changed our hotel because I felt they led me astray with regards to their free nights and then the hotel I booked Trip Advisor people had found bedbugs so I hurried canceled and rebooked with another. It is a great hotel and lots of good reviews, but I found another one yesterday with wonderful reviews, each room has a loveseat and recliner, free breakfast buffet every morning and evening they have a homemade cobbler, homemade cookies and ice cream for all the theater goers when they come back. It has all the rest of the amenities too and I will save $153 so I switched again! I told Jack with the city taking his pay I want as much bang for my buck as I can get. Oh and listen to this, they take almost 5% of his pay, lay off around 100 workers yet the city council is going to have their portraits done for a $1000 apiece to hang in city hall! Can you believe that!!! What a city this is.

I am on the foot of Jackson's sock so should finish it up today sometime then can start on Thomas's. I am going to order this yarn to make a couple pr of slippers for the vet tech and the receptionist at Fortune's vet and a pair for myself. I love the look of it and hope it felts nicely. I haven't used this brand before, but they had it on sale when I was looking for pink yarn for the one lady who loves pink. I am going to make the other lady the blue ones and myself a set of the blue and yellow.

Well, better skeddaddle and get some chores done. Have a good middle of the week all!!! Faye

Maggie 08-17-2011 12:19 PM

Wonderful Wednesday

:comp: GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is a beautiful 90 degree day here in the Heartland. Summertime. I don't have anything special to do this day. I am in between glass projects and don't want to get started on something just yet for I need to tackle those two buildings for that order now so need to get the patterns ready. The process begins with that. It is hard to believe that this month is half over already. It seems to me that we just stepped into August to leave July behind and here we have traversed half of it already. Gobbeled it up. OH graceous sakes Rod is singing "wake up maggie." His music is good to wake up to. :p I love music of all kinds except screaming kind I can't understand the words or rap that is just plain mean and nasty. But that isn't really music I guess. I have eclectic taste. ;) After Rod I think I'll put in Credance. I like to have music going when I type or do my glass in here. :D

DONNA FAYE I had to laugh about your comment that the weather is too hot for chili or soup. ;) It's because I come from an area that we ate whatever all year round regardless of the weather which was always Summer anyway. Folks "out east" ate with the seasons so the books said. After all they had their geraniums in pots inside by a window where we had then out in the yard and made forts in them for they grew so big. Any day out in CA is a good day for chili and I think I have chili running through my veins. Donde esta el es torta? Does Memphis have an Asian market? If so you could probably find the "out of the ordinary" oils there. I keep my sesame and peanut oils in the fridge to prolong their life since I don't use then as often as canola oil. I like to have them on hand for they do lend a good taste to a recipe that calls for them. But you have to do whatever works for you and thats for sure. Thanks for the reciepe ~ looks yummy. I have some sirloin in the freezer that the butcher ran through the tenerizer that I can use.

JEAN I showed that "Dump" recipe to Will and he suggested I make it for pot-luck this coming Sunday so I made a list for what I will need. You gonna buy a lap top? I love my lap top and that is all I have used for years. When this one goes ca-put I'll get another one. In fact that is all that Will wants now and has one in his office. They sure can put the gigs in them now. All we need. My current one is "HP Pavilion Entertainment PC" which I can watch TV on if I choose. I loaded my (bought and paid for) office program on it so have Desk Top Publisher which I use for lots of "work."

All y'all have a wonderful day this Humpday.

Jean 08-17-2011 05:38 PM

"Gma" -- Thank you for sharing your recipe. It sounds very good! :T I did enjoy The Lincoln Lawyer and got the next book (can't think of the title), but Haller talks about taking a year off because of pain pill addiction and going into rehab. We haven't had any trouble with the skylight leaking, but I don't like being close to a window if it is lightning. I hope your stomach has settled down and Jack's pre opt appt. went ok. I'm glad you found a better hotel deal! :cp: You are a good online shopper! Having pictures taken for $1000 sounds like a typical DUMB government move. :( I really like the colors in your new yarn.

Maggie -- We don't eat soup during the summer months either. We were supposed to have 24 people for 4 salads the other night so I doubled the amount of corn, cheese, and mayo I used, but not the chips. I usually go light on the green pepper and onion because some of my "big" kids don't like either one, but will eat them if I can hide them. I did go to the computer store and the guy is figuring up a price for me. People have said, "go to Best Buy (I don't live close to one), go to WM (yeah, right!) or order one online (nope -- have no clue what I'd order). I like the fact I get personalized local service, a 3 year warranty, etc., etc., etc. Besides that, Bob is a BIG "buy local" mind set which is fine with me.

Susan -- Hope you are having a good day! I know you are looking forward to the lock in this weekend.

Gail -- You have been gone too long! Come back, come back wherever you are! :twirly:

gma22 08-18-2011 08:21 AM

Good morning to you all! It is back to being sticky and humid. I had turned the ac up to 78 and noticed this morning the house seemed to be pretty humid and let the dog out and boy oh boy, so much for nice weather.

I just finished paying all the bills, I have to put the rest of the washing in the dryer. I have a large capacity washer and extra large capacity dryer and usually have to split the load I do every two days because I have these lovely thick, big towels and they overload my washer if I put too many in at one time. So, I do two loads and dry them as one.

Jack is now all set for his surgery in two weeks. These people are very efficient and they give him his pain prescriptions, set up his follow up appts and his rehab appts all during his pre op appt so everything flows. They are letting us take that chilled water thing to the surgical center and use it again as it was great to keep the swelling down on his knee after the surgery. The kids will be here the following weekend so he should still be on crutches possibly. We then go on vacation a couple weeks after that, which I am really looking forward to.

I still have to unload the dishwasher and reload with Jack's cereal bowl and such. My sweet hubby is now down 43 lbs and only has a few more to get to goal. He said he is going to lose a bit below goal so he can enjoy vacation! Me, I am coming along, though I have gained just a couple lbs, I am working hard and not letting it get to me. Staying on program, etc. I had been stalled because for a couple weeks I had the swelling back in my feet and lower legs which my weight stubbornly refused to budge, but they are back to normal again since the heat is down so I should start dropping again.

Jean: You could do a lot of things with that salad, put in jalapenos if you wanted a kick or chopped green chiles if you wanted the flavor and not the heat. I bought some little salad tortilla strips and I bet they would be good in place of regular tortilla chips too. Thanks for the recipe, it sounds delicious. Is the book The Brass Verdict? I think that is the next one in the series. He has done many more Harry Bosch books then Mickey Haller and has stuck Harry Bosch in the Haller Books too. In fact, I believe Harry Bosch is in this next one. I guess if I had a full time job, I wouldn't have the time to dink around finding the best deals on stuff, but if I can save money and not give up quality, I am going to do it. Oh, I was going to ask you a favor. I know you and Bob enjoy the whale watching when you go to Hawaii, can you tell me what other stuff you guys do you enjoy? The receptionist out at the plant won a contest and two plane tickets anywhere int he continental US and is thinking of taking them and then buying the flight from there to Hawaii. She is around early 50's so I figured she would enjoy the same stuff you and your friends do and told Jack I would ask you about it.

Maggie: I like soup year round too, but Jack doesn't during the summer. I could eat chili, good chili all the time. Jack loves potato soup so once it cools off, I will be making it. I told him just last night that I try to stir things up so we aren't eating the same stuff all the time. I made stuffed shells last night and they were really good and fairly easy too.

Well gals, I need to get to work and get stuff done. I am decided to take out part of the one project I did and make it longer and want to tackle it today. You all have a great Thursday! Faye

Jean 08-18-2011 10:12 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! It's a cloudy cool morning with thunderstorms predicted for later this afternoon. I have lots I can do today since I was in and out yesterday. I never have much ambition after I've "dressed up" to go someplace. :o

"Gma" -- A big :congrat: to Jack for the 43#s he has lost! I'm glad his surgery and follow up are all set to go. You will get there eventually! :) The books is The Brass Verdict and so far is another good one. Depending on which island the secretary stays on, I'd suggest going online to look at the tourist attractions. If she stays in Maui, I don't think she could possibly see everything in a week. We've done the "road to Hana" which is an all day trip, a Lahaina Luau which is expensive but supposed to be the best one for food and entertainment, the winery, a visit to what they call "Hippy Town," and it looks just like it probably did back in the '60s, the guys went deep sea fishing (didn't catch anything), the acquarium, the kids did a glass bottom boat ride and then snorkled, and a day trip to Honolulu to see Pearl Harbor, just riding around looking at beaches/surfers as well as houses/homes that rent to tourists. There's always the mall, WM, K-Mart, etc.; we did the mall the last time to kill time before heading to the airport. The planes leave Maui between 10pm and midnight so we always change into our "winter" clothes after we eat supper somewhere. We haven't done the trip up the volcano to see the sunrise (have to leave the hotel at 3am!), the pineapple field train (did that in Honolulu), or the helicopter tour. That all doesn't include all of the neat little shops and points of history interest scattered around Maui.

I need to get a move on and make a "to do" list. I feel like I accomplish more when I can cross things off a list! ;) Have a GREAT day and enjoy! :D

Jean -- from Iowa!

Maggie 08-18-2011 03:13 PM

Thankful Thursday

:comp: GOOD EARLY AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is supposed to get to a tad bit over 100 this day in the Heartland. Thats what the experts say anyway. I am doing inside things and Will is at his job at the Museum and the dogs are napping and all is well. I have been deciding what to cook for dinner and came up with a Grill and Glaze recipe called Grilled Chicken with Cola Sauce. I have all the ingredients on hand so it will be a good thing to make. I'll serve it with some of my rice mixture and cut up fresh pineapple spears and baked zuchini. I have decided leaving my closet doors in here open about a foot on each side so Beanie can get his ball when he rolls it in there. It is such a game for him. The doors hang from the track above and so they swing a bit at the bottom with a wide gap to the floor. Just enough for his little ball to roll underneith. Sure saves me from having to get up and go over there every few minutes and get his ball out of the closet.:p

DONNA FAYE I hope all goes well with your husbands treatment and he is recovered enough for your vacation to go smoothly. Won't it be wonderful. He sure did stick with it and showed a good loss for his efforts. :congrat: to him. I am sure now that your swelling has gone down you will start dropping pounds.:D You go girlfriend.

JEAN When my cousin lived over there we would always know where to go that the "natives" liked best. Not just the toruistie places. She isn't there anymore for she lives stateside now so there goes our personal guide. It's a beautiful place but I don't have the desire to go there. There is so much right here on the mainland that interests me nowdays. Like I do want to get back to Yellowstone in the winter and go out on that snow-track to see the animals at night under the moonlight. Drink hot cider near the fire in the lodge after a full day of being out and about there. ;) In order to do that we have to have our reservations in a year ahead of time.

GAIL I do hope all is well with your and yours. I miss your sweet self here. :p

SUSAN How goes the day with you?

Back to Say . . .

:comp: GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

KB :welcome: Please come back and tell us a bit about yourself. We are a group that will surely be with you and help encourage you down this road to thin. Hope to see you here.

I just rounded up the ingredients for my chicken tonight and maybe I can persuade Will to to it outside on the grill. :D Maybe I will get it done inside for him when gets home. We shall see what transpires. :p

Type at Y'all later.

Jean 08-18-2011 10:13 PM

Maggie -- We had thunderstorms late this afternoon with more coming during the night. I don't think we got much rain though. I'm surprised you are still having such hot days. We've talked about going back to Yellowstone; we were there in '90 after the fire so I'm sure it is looking better now. There are lots of places I would like to see stateside -- I'm trying to talk Bob into a bus trip to Washington, D.C. some time. I have some laundry to fold and then I'm heading off to bed. I didn't do much today but I'm tired tonight.

gma22 08-19-2011 05:09 AM

Good morning ladies! I hope your day is starting out well. It is fairly cool this morning but pretty humid still. The overall day to day temps have fallen, but I hope they stay close to 90 during our vacation as the swimming pool is outdoors at this hotel. I love to swim outdoors, but Jack has to have the water seriously warm to go swimming and really warm to swim outside. He just doesn't like cooler water below around 90 degrees or so to swim in.

Ok, I told you I wanted to lengthen that one project, but when I took out the decreases to lengthen it, I found you couldn't follow the pattern so took it almost completely out and started over. I am not almost finished with it. I have about an inch of length then can do the decreases and be finished with it. I never know when something is good enough. I ordered the yarn for the slippers this morning so am anxious to get that. The company is in Wisconsin so I hope they ship out by Monday so I can get it by the end of the week or so. I want to hurry and get mine made and felted so I can take them on vacation. Don't know why I didn't think of it before now. I also have most of Jackson's sock finished so I am rolling along there as well. I imagine I will be knitting on T's socks or the slippers or my sweater at the surgery center in a couple weeks. I will be taking all three so I can do what I want along with an audio book and a regular ebook so I have enough to do. I think once they take him back, the surgery is about 60-90 minutes if I remember right.

This weekend is commissary weekend oh joy, but I need groceries! We had plain old gr sirloin cheeseburgers for dinner last night and Jack said they hit the spot! We are having chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and a veggie tonight. I guess I'll have to get my tenderizing hand in shape to do the pounding.

Maggie: We are going to take the cruise next year and go to Vegas the following year, 2013, then probably only do small trips as we will be heading towards Jack's retirement and having quite a bit less money, but that's ok. We have enjoyed our bigger trips over the last several years very much.

Jean: I have been to D.C. once and I was 7 months pregnant with Jay. We were being transferred and going to my sister's wedding too, so we took a couple days and did one of those bus tours in D.C., but considering my size at the time, it was not enjoyable. I walked up the stairs to see the Lincoln Memorial and couldnt' get back down. We almost missed the bus to take us back to the hotel! Jack weighed almost 10 lbs so there was a lot of baby I was lugging around. I think I enjoyed the Smithsonian the most, but truth be told, we got to tour the White House back when they still did tours and that was something else. I still have pictures of the outside as you couldn't take pictures inside. No one gets to do that anymore, which is a shame.

Well, I best go. Fortune is woofing because I am sitting here instead of in the recliner where he can cuddle back up with me and Jack still has about half an hour to sleep. He goes back to his regular hours starting Monday so it will be fun adjusting Fortune back to that and me too for that matter. :) Have a great weekend everyone! Faye

Jean 08-19-2011 09:37 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! It's another cool sunny morning in my corner of the world. The weatherman says we are heading back into the 90s next week; I thought we were done with "hot." :dizzy: I've got to vacuum and dust today. We have a funeral, in Sioux City tomorrow, for a lady that Bob grew up with. The funeral will be in the church we were married in so I'm kind of anxious to see the church again. In the evening there is a retirement party for the local farm vet. He and Bob spent some quality time together when Bob used to do hog chores for his friend. I think the high light was helping with a C-section. Next week is my week to cover the church office in the mornings. I hope the secretary found someone to do the afternoons as that makes a long day when there isn't anything I can do.

"Gma" -- You have lots of knitting projects going on at one time! I would get confused trying to remember where I was on each pattern. I hope the commissary has everything on your list, and your shopping trip is a quick in and out. Where do you want to cruise to? The gal we are going to Maui with just sent me an email saying there are no SUVs available for the time we will be in Maui. :( We just rent one vehicle and share the cost so guess we will go with a full size car in order to get all of our luggage in the trunk. We call the place "Rent A Wreck" because it is located away from the airport and the vehicles are older, have scratches and door dings. However, they are much cheaper than the brand name rentals. Anyhow, I would still like to do a cruise someday.

I need to get busy and get a few things done this morning! Have a fantastic Friday and enjoy! :D

Finally Friendy Friday

:comp: GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood and expected to stay under 100 this day. I feel so sorry for those folks in AZ getting that horrific dust storm that lasted over an hour. That gets into every nook and cranney in car and home. And this is their third one this year. That chicken we did last night was really good but just needed some more spicing up which I can fix next time we do it. Will did do it on the grill after all and I set the timer and told him when to turn it according to the recipe. I love it when I try a new recipe and it is so tasty and a do again. I have yet to decide what to do for dinner this day. After all I am just finishing my first cup of coffee. :o I clipped a nice little chart out of a magazine that is a "Chile Heat Index" with pictures which has them in categories from "mild" to "off the charts" arranged in their classifications. It will be helpful when I ask Will to buy some fresh chiles to show him a picture of what I am wanting. I had planted in our garden that got destroyed the ones that I knew I would be using and could have them on hand. My plan was to prepare them and freeze them, but alas, Mother Nature took them all away. :( When I want to cook a certain dish it is always nice to have all the ingredients on hand that go in it and not have to make a trip to the store for an item. I have just about decided what to do for dinner this day. "Glazed Sweet & Sour Grilled Pork Chops" it will be. They are so yummy done that way.

DONNA FAYE I am sure you will be able to find fun and interesting things to do for vacations after Jack does retire. Folks on a "fixed income" do quite well in going places. It all depends on what you want to do as to where you will go then. I know you don't like to "camp" but there are other places. ;) I got a chuckle out of Jack wanting his swimming water so warm. He would not like swimming and riding the waves in the ocean at all.

JEAN Take a book along when you work at that shop and no custumers come in the afternoon. Might help the time go by a bit faster for you. :D That will be fun to see if that church building is the same or if they have made any changes in it.

Have a lovely afternoon Magnolias.

Jean 08-19-2011 11:55 AM

Maggie -- Your dinner menu sounds good. :T I think we are having grilled chicken breasts and whatever else I dream up . . . probably a salad. I need to get some fresh fruit later today. I'm only working in the mornings next week. I do take along magazines or a book but sometimes there are enough people coming in and out that I can't concentrate for very long. I have a perm one afternoon, and we are meeting with our lawyer to update our will. We did go back for a Sunday church service, several years ago when we were in SC for a wedding and stayed overnight. At that time the church looked pretty much the same as it did in 1967.

gma22 08-20-2011 08:08 AM

Good morning to you all! It looks pretty overcast this morning so I hope we don't get any rain as we have commissary shopping to do today. I am going to have to go to Target and Walmart to get a few things the commissary doesn't carry like the tiny pasta for Fortune's food, more WW ice cream, and I buy some premade ham salad for sandwiches at Walmart.

I finished Jackson's socks so have them done and have Thomas's first one on the needle. The place I bought the yarn has already shipped and it is UPS so will have that next week so I can start on them. I think I will make mine first and felt them so I know how fast this yarn felts.

Jean: We have booked a cruise to the Caribbean with stops at Nassau, St Thomas, and St Maartins. Jack has always wanted to take me to St Thomas since he went there when he was in the Navy so we finally put our deposit down to go Sept of next year right around my birthday. I have been trying to convince my younger sister and her hubby to go with us, but I don't think they are going to go.

Maggie: At least not swimming in the Atlantic or Pacific as it never warms up, but we are looking forward to go into the warm gulf waters when we cruise as I hear they are very warm. I however, do not like walking barefoot into the sea so will get some water shoes from Land's End to wear. I may look stupid, but euwwww I can't stand walking into the unknown, though that water is quite clear and you can see the bottom for quite aways out.

I noticed yesterday that Jack has a rehab appt just the next day after surgery. I didn't remember him doing that last time, but he said he did. We don't pay for any of the followup medical appts, but we do have to pay a copay for each rehab so it will cost us about $85 or so, which isn't too bad. The surgical center will cost us $25 and he paid his $12 copay to the doctor when he went in this last week. I have his pain meds to get and the most they will cost us is $9 so we come off pretty well all the way around. His finally surgery will come right before he retires from the city to get his hand fixed. Looks like they will have to replace his thumb joint in that one and it is a much longer recoup time.

Well, sounds like Jack is done showering so I best get upstairs and get a shower. We need to leave her by 8:15 so we can go by the bank and get some cash and get to the commissary by 9 and get in and out. Have a great Saturday!!!! Faye

QuilterInVA 08-20-2011 12:44 PM

Good afternoon, ladies. 81 degrees right now but we are smoky so I have to stay in the house. I never knew that smoke follows water and concentrates over it. That was in the newspaper earlier in the week because the rivers have been so smoky. That's wat I get for living with nearby water. It's been so bad you have to drive with the headlights on and it is nearly dark in the early afternoon. As soon as the wind shifts, it starts to clear. The fire has caught the peat on fire and that can smolder for years. So have they only have it 10% contained. There was a picture in the paper of a mother bear and her cub sitting on the edge of the road peacefully watching the firefighters.

Faye, your cruise sounds lovely - do you need someone to carry your baggage? LOL I'm sure Jack's thumb joint replacement will be worse than his knee. When I dislocated my thumb I was amazed at how hard it was to do a simple thing like pull up and fasten my pants, get a bra on, button a shirt.

Jean, was the church as you remembered it?

Maggie, we have a new WW cookbook - "Fruits & Veggies A to Z" that has 175 recipes and wonderful pictures and descriptions of all kinds of vegetables and how they taste and how to prepare them. $9.95. I'm making Velvety Corn Soup with Edamame for supper tonight.

I have housework to do today and laundry. Have a great day!

Maggie 08-20-2011 01:42 PM

Sunny Warm Saturday

:comp: GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is in the 80's today with thundershowers. We have not had to water our lawn but a couple times this summer. Not much going on around here this day. I am going to make Apricot-Glazed Pork Kebabs this day ~ another meal to cook the meat on the grill day. This is another one out of the new "Cooking Light" magazine that I have all the ingredients on hand for. :p Will went to the farmers market this day and brought back some home made soap and the phone number of the local lady that makes it and said if I like it I could buy more from her. He got some lovely large globes of garlic and onions and mulberry jelly which is sugar free. I have never had mulberry jelly so this will be a treat to try. Beanie is in the hall way having a blast playing with a plastic milk carton. Why buy him toys ~ he loves packages and cartons. I have been working on a new church address booklet for this group here since I made one last October it is time to up date it. There have been a few changes. What I do is tape the pages together and put them up on the bulletin board and have folks check to see if their name and information is correct and give them a final date to do that before I take it all down and start to work making them. I include phone numbers and e-mail addresses. I also have a page of everyones name with brithdays and anniversaries. Makes it easy to check the list each month and see who to send cards to if one wishes to do so since the list goes month by month. The finished booklet is 3 1/2 X 5 so it fits nicely in purse or pocket.

DONNA FAYE They sure can make tiny pasta now days can't they. How many varities of dog food do you make now? I have a nice pair of water walkers to use in streams when we gold pan. They sure save your feet and drain real nicely. You will find some that will work nicely for you. Thumbs are so important in making the hand work properly aren't they. It's amazing how one misses the use of it when it is hurt or damaged. I tucked mine under right now and couldn't pick up my coffee container with one hand.
Thumbs are important members of ones hand for sure.

SUSAN I will keep an eye on the books offered on the WW web page and hopefully they will add that one soon. It isn't there just yet. It sounds like a real good one and as far as I know they have never done one exclusively on fruits and veggies. I will just have to have it. :p That soup sounds yummy. Yep the air around the rivers is heavy and keeps the smoke down. Remember that song "Smoke on the Water." Can't remember if that is the name of it or who sang it but in my head I hear the tune. :o I hope the wind continues to blow it away from your area.

GAIL Dear friend of mine ~ please come back.

We are off to Home Depot. Going to get some table legs to go on the computer printer table Will is building for me. He will stain it to match my wooden desk. :p Life is good.

Type at y'all later.

Jean 08-20-2011 03:45 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! The sun has been in and out with a breeze now and then. Strange day for weather! We went to Sioux City for the funeral this morning. We were about a half hour early so sat in the parking lot. Finally two more cars pulled in beside us. We weren't expecting a huge crowd, and there are two parking lots so we figured the other cars might be on the other side of the church. Finally two more cars pulled in beside us. We walked up to the door and there is a sign saying the funeral is next Saturday! Both of children live in the Sioux City area so have no clue why they are waiting so long. Anyhow, some guy pulled in and yelled that the funeral home gave the newspaper the wrong date! Bob knew a couple of the "kids" who belonged to another friend of his mom's, so we did visit with them. We stopped at Menards and McDs for a quick lunch, then headed home.

"Gma" -- Having a definite cruise date next year will be so fun to look forward to! I hope your sister and hubby decide to go with you. I think it's fun to travel with another couple. :) I don't like walking in water where I can't see the bottom. Our lake has an abundance of seaweed, not to mention "stuff" that washes into the shoreline, and I don't like taking a chance! One of our bell choir members had a finger joint replaced because of arthritis. It took a long time to heal so that she could use it properly again, but it finally is ok now.

Susan -- I didn't know that smoke follows water. I learned something today! I hope nobody bothered the bear and her cub -- that would be a cute picture. We didn't get inside the church since the funeral is next Saturday. The area around the church used to be the lawyers and doctors kind of neighborhood. It has really gone downhill and a few kids who walked by kept looking at our car. I said to Bob that I hoped they wouldn't come back and try anything while we were in the church. Was your lock-in last night? I didn't think we would see you today. ;)

Maggie -- We stopped at an intersection of a small town on our way home from Sioux City. There were two pickups with tents set up and loaded with fresh produce. Everything looked so good :T I wanted to buy alot, but we can't eat it fast enough. It's nice of you to create a church book. I'm thinking we will probably be doing a picture directory next summer/fall before the college kids and snowbirds leave the area. It's a good idea to include the dates and email addresses. That makes me think of cell phone #s -- I got a political call on my cell phone the other day! I didn't look at the # and answered it.

Guess I will do some laundry. I've changed clothes and will figure out what I'm wearing to the retirment party later this afternoon. Hope you all are having a nice relaxing day! Enjoy! :D

Maggie 08-20-2011 04:33 PM

Back To Yack

:comp: GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

We didn't find any legs that we particully wanted for my little computer printer table so Will can make some on his lathe. ;)

JEAN That is too bad you had a mix up on those dates. Are you going back for the real time? I am so glad that some folks veggie gardens didn't get totaled by that hail storm so we can at least get some fresh home grown items. The folks that have items for sale aught to make a good showing this year for their home growns are in demand. I think they will be there each Saturday to sell their goods. The soap bar Will bought me smells just like soap meaning no perfume and is cream color with green swirls running through it. It measures 2 X 3 inches and is an inch thick. I think I will put it on a cute little dish in my bathroom. I use pump in the bathroom and at the kitchen sink. Right now my only soap dish which is enameled metal with holes to dran into a matching underneath thingie is being used for my Sal-Ammoniac block to rub my hot soldering tip on to remove oxidation buildup. And I want to keep it that way for it is working for that. If I continue to buy these blocks of soap I need to get a new soap dish. :p

Everyone have a lovely afternoon.

gma22 08-21-2011 09:49 AM

Good morning to you all. I talked to Gail a couple days ago and she and her dgds and dd are in Va Beach on a visit. She is doing fine, just busy as usual.

Got through the commissary fairly quickly, but they hadn't gotten their new stock in or at least hadn't put it out, so the pickin's were thin in areas. I got everything I needed though, but I do have to go to Walmart's still and get a couple things the commissary doesn't carry or only has big bags of. So, that job is done for another couple weeks. Next payday Jack will have just had his surgery so I imagine I will just get a few groceries at a time in town until we go on vacation because buying $300 worth of groceries, hauling them in and putting them all away by myself is not something I look forward to.

We got his pain prescription yesterday and drove by the building where his surgery will be so we knew exactly where it was so he is now all set.

I made a triple batch of lowfat buttermilk biscuits this morning along with a double batch of the Kruteaz ff blueberry muffins and will put them all in freezer bags and freeze them then we can have them whenever we want one. The biscuits are a very nice size and only 2 pts. I use ff buttermilk and I can't believe it's not butter instead of shortening. They are very good and the muffins are great. You can have things that are tastey and not zooming in pts, people just have to put in a little effort. I saw on tv the other day new Lean Cuisine snacks and one of which is a spinich and artichoke dip with pita bread so I bought one to try at the commissary.
We had some yummy strawberry shortcake with lowfat lb cake, strawberries and ff redi whip last night. It was a wonderful treat.

Jean: So sorry you trip was a bust, though I guess a funeral isn't a whoop dee doo time anyway. At least you got out and about. We had a whopper of a rain storm when we were out yesterday and of course got soaked. then, early this morning a big lightening, thunder and rain storm that knocked out the power for awhile. I woke up in a sweat and the house really hot. It is back to being in the 90's and very humid with the rain and such so it gets uncomfortable fast. I have a good book for you to read or audiobook if you have something to listen with. It is called One Dangerous Lady by Jane Stanton Hitchcock. It is all about New York society and the upper crust and has a bunch of murders all thrown in for good measure. It is a great read. I just finished for the second time on an audiobook. I had forgotten I had listened to it way back when I was "training" to do a 5K several years ago and was walking so much everyday.

Maggie: Sorry you didn't find what you wanted for table legs. It would have cut down on the time to put it together.

Today I have to get out and go to Walmart's but I am still in pj's and not very get up and go yet even though I made all the food this morning. Just sitting here with a fresh biscuit with a bit of blackberry jam and a carton of oJ. Doctor wants me to get more potassium without pills if I can so I have been having bananas and oj to help it. The pills I take robs me of potassium since then are a diuretic.

Oh and last but not least, please put a young woman named Missy on your prayer list. I don't remember her last name, but she is suffering from cancer and has had several surgeries with organ removals and now has to have another which is devasting emotionally for her because of what it involves. She is a friend of Kelly's and Jay's age so is a young woman. She has an adorable family and it breaks my heart what she is going through.

Hava nice day all. I am going to get some work done. Faye

Jean 08-21-2011 02:09 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's a beautiful day in my neighborhood! We went to church and Bob just left for the lake to do some more repair work. Jason mowed yesterday so Bob won't have to do that. I opted to stay home and declutter the kitchen, pick up Ernie toys that he as scattered willy-nilly around the house, laundry, and get ready for my "work" week at church. :jig:

"Gma" -- I knew that Gail, her daughters, and granddaughters were spending a weekend together at VA Beach but forgot when it was. I'm glad you got to touch base with her. Your biscuits and muffins sound delicious. :T - fresh bread of any kind is my downfall! Our temperatures are supposed to be back in the uppers 80s with a 90+ degree day later in the week. We've just had strange weather this spring and summer! I will go online and see if our library has the book you mentioned. I will keep Missy in my prayers; it's sad :( that young people have such major health challenges so early in their lives.

Maggie -- Yes, we will go back for the funeral next week. I'm just glad we live close enough to do that. :) It's nice that Will has the tools and talent to make your table legs.

I hear the dryer buzzing so time to change loads. Have a fun rest of the day and enjoy! :D

Maggie 08-21-2011 04:59 PM

Sunny Hot Sunday

:comp: GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is another hot day here in the heartland and I am so thankful for air conditioning. Pot-luck after church was a good one for I got to pick and choose what to eat and still stay on program. Everything I ever take is all eaten up so that is a good thing. I think for dinner we are going out to Applebees after chruch this evening. I can eat OP there also. :p I am not doing much this day but staying back here in my office. The dogs are happy to be inside.

DONNA FAYE Looks like you have some good things in your freezer with making those biscuits and muffins. I use a small cutter for my biscuits and they are made with that low fat Bisquick and only 2 points each and yummy. I love those Krustaez products. I have some cran-orange ones in the freezer. :p I too have to replinish my potassium and have to watch it also. I am sure glad I like fresh fruit for it helps. Our doctors are on the same page with the bananas and oranges.:p Geting the potassium naturally is so much better than the suppliments.

JEAN Well I gotta tell ya ~ that salad was a hit and I was asked for the recipe so I made some cards this afternoon to take to them tonight. I called it Corney Dump Salad and used Miracle Whip instead of the mayo since neither of us like mayo and I don't have any in the house. I also made little cubes of the cheese instead of shredding it and it made it look festive with the other items in it. Yeppers it is a keeper ~ Thanks for it. Will just thought he could buy legs and have it done quicker but I am not in a hurry and he can do that table when he gets the time to do it for he has the "can do." :D

Have a great afternoon Magnolias.

Jean 08-21-2011 09:38 PM

Maggie -- I imagine you are at Applebee's about now. :T I'm glad the salad went over well at the pot luck; it's certainly easy enough to make. I like it because I usually have everything on hand, except the chips, to make it for unexpected guests. It stayed a beautiful day all day here; I hope your heat goes south instead of north!

gma22 08-22-2011 05:55 AM

Good morning gals. It is back to being warm and very humid. The lovely weather was wonderful while it lasted. I woke up to a mess this morning. Fortune had thrown up in several places in the living room. I don't know if he got into something outside again or what. I will just have to keep an eye on him and see what develops. I did go ahead and feed him though so we shall see. He is bad about licking so he may have licked something with fuzz and upchucked because he has done that before.

Jack goes back to fall hours today so he isn't up yet, but I had to go to the bathroom so decided just to get up and stay up. I have things I can do and want to work some more on Thomas's socks as the yarn for the slippers will be here sometime this week and I will want to get those knitted up and done when they come so I can give them to the ladies when I have to go and get more meds for Fortune in a couple weeks.

Jean: I am a sucker for fresh bread too so I rarely make it anymore or if I do, I use those frozen dough balls and make Jack and I just one roll apiece so we don't sit there and scarf down bread and butter. Have you ever had that cinnamon bread from Pepperidge farm? It is very tasty but something like 4 pts apiece per slice so I don't buy it either. I like raisin bread toasted and such and bought the cinnamon stuff and then got home and found you could almost have a sandwich for what a piece of that bread cost you. :D Hope your week at the church works out fine and dandy with no problems.

Maggie: I imagine your salad went over gangbusters. It is one of those salads you can adapt to almost anything and make it fun.

Well I guess I better get going. Fortune is barking at me so he probably wants out. Have a good start to your week. Faye

Jean 08-22-2011 02:27 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's turning out to be a warm and humid afternoon; I guess we are on our way to 90 degrees tomorrow. My morning at church went super fast. First thing was helping to count money and then trying to log into the computer on the secretary's desk. It wanted her password for the "office" site and I couldn't get in with the one she normally would use; the pastor finally called her and left a voice message . . . password for "office" is office. Well, duh, how was I to know? My password for what I had to do was the same as always thank heaven. Between selling tickets for two different luncheons and phone calls it took me all morning just to do what normally takes me less than an hour.

"Gma" -- I hope that Fortune is ok, and his food is staying down. What a mess to face first thing in the morning! Bob likes raisin bread; the last time he brought some home it had frosting dribbled on top. Needless to say it was a major mess cleaning up the toaster. :( Is Jack's day the same amount of hours just different times from summer to fall? Amanda's dad works 10 hour days June through August and then has Fridays off.

I need to change clothes and do some dusting and vacuuming that I didn't finish the other day. Have a nice rest of the day! :D

QuilterInVA 08-22-2011 02:39 PM

Good afternoon, ladies! A lovely smokeless day at 82 degrees but rain is a maybe later in the day. The fire is now 15% contained and while we aren't in danger from Irene, they are predicting torrential rain and that would sure help put the fire out.

My PT says no low impact water aerobics or water zumba for at least 6 months and maybe longer. We're switching to winter schedule the day after labor day so I guess I'll pick up a couple of deep water aerobics classes - no impact. I'm loving the Yoga and she approves of it for stretching my knee. Things seem to be going a little slower than we thought but today we did some very light leg weight exercises and the stationery bike.

Nothing happening today. Vacuuming and washing floors. I'm going up to sew shortly. Tomorrow is River Country Quilt Guild so that will be fun after working and exercising.

Faye, I hope Fortune is okay. You need one of those little lean mean cleaning machines to spot clean where he throws up. Does Thomas like his classes this year?

Jean, I hope your "work" goes quickly this day. It's hard to believe it'll soon be time to close up the lake cottage for winter.

Maggie, what are you making good today for dinner? That cookbook may not be available on the website, I think it is meeting room only. You are sure lucky to have Will. He can do so many things.

Gail, I hope you had a great, relaxing weekend with the girls.

Have a great day.

Jean 08-22-2011 03:50 PM

Susan -- I don't want you to get flooded, but hope the rain will help put the fire out. I'm sorry about the 6 month wait for you to get back to Zumba and the class you enjoy so much. I'm glad the yoga works and great if you can get into a deep water class. You will have a busy day tomorrow, but know you will enjoy quilt guild. I'm not used to getting up and dressed so early . . . I'm ready for a nap!
