  • thanks Rick, i will keep it up because I am sure it's working. I am also sure the weight loss will come soon.
  • Ideal fast time
    John and AmberJae
The theory is all fine and dandy and many many have had great results with 16 hours but I have over the last 2 days talked to 2 different long term 2 year and 4 years on IF and they have found there sweet spot around 18 hours without loosing any strength in the weight lifting so that leads me to believe that for whatever reason the theory doesnt hold up so if the 20 hours is working well for you maybe thats your sweet spot
    Cheers
  • Thanks so much for your contributions to this thread, Rick... good info...

Here's a good blog post from Brad Pilon's blog... "Something to 'tide you over'"

  • makes sense to me John and Rick. As I said I am doing a 7 hour window, and I have definitely not had any trouble putting on muscle. I agree with Shesie, I am happy to have 2 very knowledgeable of the subject males on the forum.

well, weight finally dipped down again. I had a huge dinner last night, so wasn't expecting it. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 mile walk up and down hills last night. I was so pumped for it. This is day 4 of IF for me. I am only slightly hungry. Will be fixing a glass of chai tea here in a minute. I really appreciated JohnPs info on how something under 50 calories doesn't break your fast. I have done such a fast with Dr. Bragg's ACV and honey--just sipped on that all day long. And saw such good results as well as I had HUGE amounts of energy. I worked at a fast food restaurant and people would ask me to cover part of their shift after my shift ended, and I still had the energy to do that!
  • through day 4. It got a little tougher around 3 pm. But i made it through.

I really like the feeling of being hungry followed by the feeling of sateity. is this wierd?
  • Rick -

All of your calculations look to be true but you're not accounting for the digestion time of protein in one's last meal.

Take a look at the digestion speed of protein and then recalculate how long one can fast after their last meal before muscle catabolism begins. Even whey which is one of the fastest digesting proteins takes 3-4 hours to completely digest.

I really don't know that anyone knows the answer but I imagine it depends on a variety of factors including the size and composition of one's last meal.

I am a big paranoid myself about muscle loss so I don't go more than 15-17 hours depending on the day and always include a good amount of slow digesting protein in my last meal.
  • day 5 over. really really wanted good wholesome foods when i broke my fast. that food was delicious. Ate lots of protein after my walk. yummy baked chicken. on to day 6. this thread is slow.
  • I am trying to relose some pounds I regained from a major weight loss years ago and have been interested in reading different versions of IF that pop up in forums as I naturally seem to do this, not for lengthy periods but I do seem to do better blood sugar wise if I am able to not eat until hungry.

IF is just people's attempts stabilize an eating pattern suits their body, in my opinion. I don't adhere to Fast 5 or any set program, just a person on a journey to keep weight off and stabilize blood sugar.
  • "I really like the feeling of being hungry followed by the feeling of sateity. is this wierd?"

Hi jen, another jen here. i don't really think it's weird. No matter what diet plan i followed before IF, i would always crave the feeling of hunger followed by a good filling meal. Not so filling i am sick, just filling and nutritous. i try not to be too philosophical but you have to figure in most of history that's how things went-either people had to forage/hunt/grow their own food... or even in our parents and grandparents time, food wasn't "entertainment" it was just to keep you alive and working. Dinner was dinner, everyone sat at the table, ate, it was over. KWIM? Anyway, just a few thoughts.

i have had some trouble sticking to my WOE this weekend due to alcohol...it clouds my judgement and my plans. But i am going to get back on it, today. -fm
  • Amarantha, i have felt that my blood sugar is MUCH more stable when I do IF. before IF in 2 hours after eating I would get jittery and feel like if I didn't eat I would claw something to death...but now I can go 6 hours without eating after i wake up..and I feel fine, just slightly hungry. I also have more energy and get alot more accomplished. I wish i could get myself up earlier in the day though...but i have a 2 month old erratic sleeper.

foodmasochist, i used to be a vegan. I guess that makes sense. I relish the feeling of going about my day busy with an empty tummy. There must be something in me that remembers this or craves this. I wonder if it goes back to my fasting days where I ate every other day. I lost a lot of weight this way. And I felt great.

my waist is looking better and better every day, but I have not lost any weight. blah. i guess I should just enjoy losing 2 1/2 inches off my gut for now. Weight loss surely should be coming soon.
  • @jendiet I have a friend with hypoglycemia. She decided to try IF anyway (Fast 5). She's been doing it for 3 months now and hasn't had one episode. Seems odd but also seems to work that way with everyone I know who has tried. It certainly does seem to keep blood sugar stable.
  • KT, i am pretty sure it has to do with taking an insulin resistant body and making it more insulin sensitive--therefore the body is using up its own stores. Of course I have to look into the studies done on it, but i think that is why i love it most of all--i am not a slave to food.

    day 6 over.
  • Glad to see this thread still going strong. I've had a lot to deal with lately and my mother is in the hospital.

Anyway, I've gained a group of workout buddies at work since they've made it easier to access the gym at work (we can open it with our badges, unlike before) so it's been great. I tie in IF whenever posssible and have lost a few pounds so far. I look forward to many more pounds lost.

    Hope you're all well.

  • day 7 completed. i had a rough day today, but not with the food. I was just tired and had a project due. I also didn't eat like I normally did, cuz I was too busy. carefully broke the fast, but my ONE meal didn't turn out like it normally did.
  • I'm a bit worried that I'm not eating enough now that I'm using IF. This is what I ate today.

Meal 1: Egg and slice of brown bread, carrot, cucumber slices, red pepper

    Snack: low fat strawberry yoghurt

Meal 2: Turkey breast, potato, salad

    calories: ~1000

I also did an hour swim.

Should I add an extra snack in my day?
