  • Woohoo, you can do it!
  • I've been on this diet for two weeks. I screwed up on Thursday and ate. I ate a lot because I was stressed. It really screwed me up. Would you suggest I more exercise to compensate, or is it okay not eat an extra day this week? I'm really worried I won't make my weight loss goal this month, any advice or suggestions would be wonderful.
  • Kaycaroline - I'd say "Fo'get about it!" (my best New York accent) and move on. So, you screwed up 1 day...big whoop. Our diets -- or lifestyle changes -- aren't a video game. You don't kill yourself and it's game over, start from the beginning, and our bodies aren't going to make us start from the beginning, either.

Just move on and do it right in the moment. You don't gain 10 pounds for having an 'oops' day, so do NOT beat yourself up about it.

    You're doing great!
  • AriesNV - Thanks. That really puts things in perspective. I guess I'll just do better next time. Thanks for the advice.
  • Anytime! =]
  • Hello, I'm new to 3FC and IF. I have been stalking this thread for a couple days. I've read all the comments and have registered at Fast-5 and read the ebook yesterday. I am convinced this is what I've been looking for. I'm, just so surprised that I hadn't found it until now.

I am excited to start this life style and began my treck today. I'm starting slowly because I struggle with binge eating. I fasted until 11:45 am and broke fast with soe hummus and bell pepper slices. I'm feeling great, I can't wait to start winning by losing
  • Kay, what Aries said is so right...just start all over and forget it happened. Weightloss is a journey that has it's ups and downs.

Amber, welcome. I wish you the best. IF is amazing.

Anyway, I posted the Challenge thread, ladies! In the Chicks Up For A Challenge section. I'd post the link but I'm on my cell and don't know how to copy and paste with this thing yet. LOL. So, please go look for it and join us starting Monday and let's drop some pounds!

  • Hi all!

Checking in. IF has been going well lately. I haven't been nearly as hungry early in the day and my blood sugar has been very stable. I also started bicycling to work while fasting without any problems. And I am down a couple pounds this week. I feel better now than I've felt in years! Go IF!
  • Good Morning-

Yesterday went pretty well. I am going to have to work on what I eat during the window though. Today will be better. The fasting was a little difficult. Again, I ate a little bit around 11 and then I was fine until the window. I also was hungry right before bed and ended up eating a little bit then also. Strangely, although I ate a decent amount of calories yesterday, I am really hungry this morning. I guess I will try to tough it out until 11 and then eat something small.

How did most of you start this? Did you just do it or did you kind of transition into it? Do you think it will it be more difficult if I only do it four days a week and eat three "regularly" spaced meals on the other days (basically a 12 hour window)? How many hours is it from when you wake up until your window's starting time?
  • @amber Good luck!
  • @terapet For several people I know, there is a period of adjustment. Most of the "experts" suggest that if you have trouble just start pushing your first meal forward one hour each day until you get to the eating window you want to use. I am up at 5:45 AM and start eating at 5 PM with a five hour window (5 to 10 PM).
  • Quote: Sure what specifically would you like to know? Essentially the only really good data we have comes from the Minesota Starvation Study. Metabolisms slowed down by about 50% but 35-40% of that is attributed to loss of muscle and fat. Thus - 10-15% is attributed to the body metabolically adapting.

How much and how fast depends on genetics, body fat percentage, and overall deficit and probably a bunch of other factors I'm not considering.

If you stop eating completely you might see a 10% drop after only 5 days. If you're 500lbs and you're eating only 600 calories a day your metabolism might not slow down that much after 6 months.

The main take away is that starvation mode is a myth because the body can only slow down one's metabolism so much. The primary problem in the short run is psychological and if someone is lean enough, hormonal. In the long run health can suffer due to lack of micronutrients.
Thanks, JohnP!.. I think that covers it pretty well... I had always pretty much ignored warnings about starvation mode, but I was starting to wonder if that was wise... thanks for reassuring me...

    hugs
  • This IF thing is such a learning process for me. This week, I noticed that I don't really experience hunger after around 9 pm, but my most "noshy" period is between 7 and 9 pm. I wonder how to act on this bit of information. For now, I can keep from succombing to hunger till around 4:30 pm, but it's a real push. Maybe I can eat something nutrient dense (avocado?) at that time and then have a meal at 7 that's more balanced. I've taken up Monique's IF challenge, so this'll be a good week to try to figure this out.

I weighed in at 301.5 this morning. I'm so ready for the challenge and to break into the 290s with no looking back!
  • @geoblewis I drink green tea all day. Really helps keep appetite under control and its good for you.
  • KTucke7, if I drank green tea all day, it would definitely work...because I'd be in the bathroom most of the day!

Oh, silly me. I just got home from having brunch with my son. I really, really regret my food choices. It tasted bad, and I still ate it! I am uncomfortably stuffed, I now have a headache and am feeling poorly because I suspect there was soy in everything. I calculated my calories and I am soooooo done eating for the day! I am going to sleep it off for the next few hours and then I have lots of chores to keep me busy until I'm ready for bed, which will now be very late.

The good side of this...I'm all set up for a 30-hour fast and a small meal tomorrow evening. Hope I can succeed and record credit for it in the challenge that starts tomorrow.
