  • Good afternoon, ladies. It's only 32 degrees right now and we are supposed to get an inch of snow during the night but 40 degrees tomorrow so it won't last long.

Faye, be safe in your travels! I suppose Thomas is caring for Fortune.

Jean, sorry you have to go to SC for such a sad reason.

Maggie, I don't know what I want to do today, either. I went to the Y this morning after my doctor's appointment. Had water aerobics, weight machines, and treadmill. I feel so full of energy! You know Beanie had to work really hard to get onto the bed! Cupid wanted me up by 6 am and if I wasn't, he'd pat my face with his paw. He was such a creature of habit and if his meals weren't on time, he wouldn't eat them later.

    Have a great day!
  • Good Evening, Flowers! It's been another long cold day in my corner of the world. Coming home tonight the car said it was -9. I think my weather bug died because he says it is 73 degrees! I worked in the church office this morning and had to be there at 7:30 to let the furnace repair guys in. They didn't show up until 7:45. GRR! I went to lunch bunch at noon, came home and did a load of laundry, then headed for Sioux City. We were early so stopped at KMart so I could use the restroom and Bob bought a bottle of water before heading to the funeral home. Took the kids out for supper and headed back home again. Tomorrow is all day at the church office and funeral #1. Friday is funeral #2 and I'm hoping we can close the office so I can go with Bob. Funeral #3 is Saturday and the kids will be here so we won't go to that one.

Maggie -- I wish you lived here so you could provide "take out meals" for us! Your menu ideas always sound good. Do you have enough room on your bed or two dogs?

Susan -- We are supposed to hit 40 degrees this weekend. That's hard to believe with so many days below 0 the last few days. The sun has been shining so that does help alot. We didn't spend a long time at the funeral home. The family is quite large -- 8 children and spouses, 16 grandchildren and most have spouses, and I don't know how many "greats." Grandma was more than ready to meet Grandpa once again and had lived a very full life for 89 years. Congrats on another day of exercise! Did you get a new instructor yet?

I need to pick up the newspapers and paper clutter then head for bed. Have a terrific Thursday tomorrow!

    Jean -- from Iowa!
  • Thankful Thursday
    GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a sunny cold day here in the Heartland with a temperature of 19 which feels like 9 because of the breeze. All is well and the dogs are outside. Beanie will probably come in with a snow mask when they have had enough out there. Will is at his volunteer job at the Museum and all is quiet. I have a couple chicken breast tenders out to thaw which I will grill and serve with them some brown rice mixture, green beans and a fruit salad. That's the plan for dinner. For lunch I had a WW frozen noodle mix with veggies for a whopping 4 points. Now I have my menu planned I will do some glass work this day. I have a barn cut out and that is as far as I have gotten with it so far. Busy doin' other stuff. The mail man brought my skimmer and long tweezers with the mail today. The tweezers are trick ~ they have slip on silicone tips so they don't scratch non stick pans if that is what you use. They are about a foot long and will be very useful. The skimmer surprized me, pleasantly. The one I used to have had the chicken wire look bowl about 3 inches across but this one has one of 5 1/2 and a sturdy bamboo handle. It is certainly "job rated." I now have all the wok tools I ordered. Still waiting on one of the books though. Wonder what is "out there" for what ever it is set all the neighborhood dogs to barking.

DONNA FAYE Do hope you are warm and safe. I miss your posts.

JEAN OH there is plenty of room for those two little dogs on our bed for we have a king size. I don't like having Beany up there for he is too hyper and "in your face" when I just want to sleep. He has found a way to get up there and he does just that. Ragg Mopp usually just stays down at the foot of the bed and out of the way completely. Thank goodness Beanie spends the night on his bed under the chair in the corner. But in the morning watch out. You certainly have a lot of funerals to attend.

SUSAN Cats are such wonderful creatures. So picky and independent and smart. Do you stay in the water long enough for your fingers to prune? I do so miss my swimming days. I have been meaning to ask you ~ what is that "x" down at the bottom of your posts not showing?

Have a wonderful day Magnolias. Type at y'all later.
  • Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's 15 degrees here but the wind chill is still -3; it's been sunny so that's a plus. We are supposed to be in the 40s this weekend. The town is having some sort of winterfest activities planned so I hope it isn't windy. I spent all day at the church office; 1 funeral down and 2 to go. We have an Admn. Council meeting tonight. The associate pastor told me she is also leaving and will announce that tonight and in church on Sunday.

Maggie -- Are you feeling a bit lonely here today? I think today is Susan's two job work day. I'm glad your new tools have arrived. You will have fun with your wok now! All of our cats slept on our bed except when we had the 3, whichever one got there first had dibs for the night. Ernie is shut in the basement because he bit me that one night.

Susan -- I hope you've had a good work day today.

"Gma" -- I'm hoping the weatherman has been good to you while you are up north! Travel safely coming home.

I need to dream up something for supper -- maybe egg sandwiches or grilled cheese. Bob will be home soon. Have a relaxing evening and a Fantastic Friday tomorrow!

    Jean -- from Iowa!
  • Good morning, ladies! A brisk 33 degrees this morning, but it'll be in the 60s by Sunday and all next week. We did get about an inch of snow yesterday but it was all gone by noon.

I haven't done anything exciting - just work.

Maggie, I'm in the water for more than an hour during water aerobics so my fingers do prune. I didn't go this morning because they have water zumba in our time slot and it just tires me so much and I have to be at work at 1 pm today. Thank goodness we'll have our regular classes back with a permanent teacher March 1. I guess they realized that they are a lot of upset seniors in our classes ... and we have more to donate than the younger ones.

Jean, I think you work as much now as when you had a paying job! I always tell my friends you are busier when you retire than when you were working. I hope things go well for your winter festival this weekend. Won't be long until we change those clocks ahead!

    Have a great day!
  • Finally Friendly Friday
    GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is 24 and a sunny day here in the Heartland. Perhaps the snow will melt. The neighbor was stuck in his driveway and I heard the sound of his truck which clued me in. I asked Will if the neighbor was stuck and he went out to tell him he would get the Jeep and snatch em strap and get him out when he broke free. It had dawned on Will the same time it dawned on me what that sound meant. Will told him next time just come get him and he would yank him free. Since we have been using quite a bit of yogurt lately I know I will get some use out of my new yogurt making machine. It makes several small jars at one time then I can flavor them or sweeten them as I want. I used to have one and used it a lot but gave it away when we downsized. I make yogurt cheese by putting some on a coffee filter in a strainer over a bowl to drain off all liquid. Makes a firm consistancy to mix with salad dressing or mayo or Miracle whip to cut down on points. It truly takes on the taste of the host material. Anyway we do use a lot of yogurt around here. This way I can make it as light as possible and use splenda, flavorings and what ever fruit I want. Lots of uses for yogurt. I dug out a neat recipe I am going to make today which is called "Spicy Onion Jam". It is good on crackers with goat cheese or on meat or such. I have the ingredients on hand so will give it a go this day. I haven't made it in awhile and it sounds so good. It is 1 point+ for 2 Tablespoons. My grandmother made something like it and when I ran across this WW recipe years ago I was jazzed. It makes 2 cups but is easy to cut the recipe in half for you cover and refrigerate it for one week. I don't want to make the full 2 cup recipe unless I am having company or taking it to a party or pot-luck. I always find something to use it in so as not to waste it for it is so good. I am planning on serving it will steak this evening.

DONNA FAYE Staying safe and warm are you and getting in a good visit with your loved ones? I imagine you are.

SUSAN I am so happy for you now that you are going to get a new water exercize instructor.

JEAN Busy at work this day are ya?

Have a lovely day all y'all.

  • Good Afternoon, Flowers! TGIF for sure, and my "work" week is over; my work week at church that is. The sun has disappeared but it's a "warm" 32 degrees this afternoon. I'm hoping it will melt some of the ice ruts in the streets today.

Susan -- I'm so glad you are getting a new instructor for your water aerobics class! Being extra busy kind of runs in a cycle; I'll be so busy for a week or so, and then hardly anything for awhile. It's nice to know that I can say 'no' if I choose to. I think we change the clocks earlier in March, maybe in about 4 weeks or so. I still haven't figured out the purpose for starting earlier and ending later; I wish they'd choose one or the other and leave it alone.

Maggie -- I think you missed your calling! You should have been a chef! Just think . . . you could give Paula Deen a run for her money using FF, Splenda, etc. It was a busy morning at the church with a funeral which Bob and I went to. We ate lunch afterwards. Next on the list was to run bulletins and inserts for Sunday. I couldn't get the folding machine to fold straight (neither could the minister) so the gal that came in at 1 is folding them by hand.

"Gma" -- I imagine you are "on the road" somewhere.

I'm off to make my grocery list and head out. Hope you all enjoy the "rest of the day," and have a great weekend!

    Jean -- from Iowa!
  • Back For A Bit
    GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

I just gotta tell ya ~ I just finished making a half recipe of that Spicy Onion Jam and believe me I had forgotten just how good it is. It is worth any amount of work that goes into it. To saute the onions takes half an hour but I was doing things in and around my kitchen at the time so it wasn't a chore. It is something that Will likes also. Anyway I have the recipe on a card if any of you want it just let me know and I can e-mail it to you. The only thing in it you may not have on hand is pomegranate juice but it is easy to find at a liquor store if your market doesn't carry it. I have never frozen any of it so next time I will make the full recipe and freeze half and see how it turns out. Some things just don't freeze well ya know. I am already thinking of things I can make for Christmas and this would be a nice one to give along with a pack of crakers and some cheese. Around the holidays folks are always wanting something to serve to guests. Tonight I am serving it with grilled meat along with some of my rice mixture and a veggie and fruit. Love that fruit ~ and it goes well with grilled meat. I am so looking forward to Spring when we can cook outside. We really could now but the cold breeze does affect the temperature of the grill. I have a wok that can be used on the outside Webber. I also want to get that smoker going with a few turkey breasts in it.

JEAN You sneeked in there when I was typing. Sounds like your Friday is going well. Also I do hope you find what you are after while shopping. Prices are definitely going up in our area, how bout yours?

Life is good. hope y'all are having a lovely day.
  • Sunny Saturday
    GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It has warmed up some here in the Heartland this day. 34 degrees with a W wind at 10 mph which makes it feel like 27 ~ but it is warmer. I have my list of "to do" things this day and I can work my way though it. One of the tasks is to season that wok. It takes doing it 3 times before use so I need to get that part done. It involves scribbing all the oil off with soap and a scrubber that it was coated with to protect it in storage, then heating the pan, adding oil to coat the inside then rubbing it in and blotting the excess. Then repeat all but the initial washing of it. And the rest has to do with my usual Saturday chores. We all have those. Not much else going on this day so far.

Everyone I hope you are well this day. Type at y'all later.
  • Good afternoon, ladies. 50 degrees and sunshine. The geese work me up this morning. I think they were greeting some of their friends because there are more of them now. LOL

I went to WW - down just .2. This last little bit is taking forever but it is going down. I'm just about due for 2 pounds or so, I hope.

I'm making Faye's chili for dinner. I like having leftovers of that. Sometimes I use it to make chili mac or put some over a baked potato for lunch. I'm making Maggie's bean soup tomorrow. I was going to make it earlier this week but just never got around to it. I have my beans soaking now.

Jean, I agree with you on the day light savings time. It's just dumb. I say turn the clocks 30 minutes and leave them there permanently.

Maggie, I'd like the onion jam recipe. I love your recipes.

I have a load of laundry to get out of the dryer, and then I'm going to quilt.

    Enjoy your day!
  • Back For A Bit
    GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

I just got through seasoning my wok and Will thought I was cooking something. Guess he smelled the hot oil I was rubbing it with. Too early to start dinner so I am taking a rest from my work. He bought me a real pretty bunch of flowers this day and I have the stems cut and in a vase and they look so pretty. I placed them in the front room on the table beside my rocker. I just located another recipe I was looking for and I will send it to you ~ it is "Seafood Sauce." I needed some for a stir fry recipe that called for some fish sauce and of course they don't sell it around here but it is just a seafood sauce anyway. They do sell "Shrimp Sauce" and of course that would work but I like this recipe that I mix up myself. I have recipes for most of the mixes & dressings I use. We are up close to 60 today and supposed to get up in the 70's the first part of the week.

Well brake time is over and I have more things I want to do.
  • Evening ladies. Quick post to let everyone know we got home safe and sound about an hour ago. I perused the postings but will talk to you all tomorrow.

Manuel was cremated so they had a memorial then a service. It was done beautifully and I actually saw several people I haven't seen in years including her first husband's sister in law and niece.(My sister's first husband committed suicide when her kids were young teens.) She held up really well and her son in law put together a wonderful vid of Manuel from babyhood on.

My grandson is a real peach and so very funny. We had a delightful time visiting with them too even though the trip was short. We did extend it one day though. I had Amazon ship him his little books and sticker book for Valentine's Day then had Popcorn Factory send some goodies, which will be delivered on Monday. I had told him that he had another surprise coming from Nonny for Valentine's Day and when we showed up this morning to tell them goodbye, I barely got in the door before he said, "Nonny do you have my box?" I told him no that it would come after he got home from school on Monday. He is really growing tall and thinning out and talks a blue streak now and everything he gestures with his hands.

Jack went out to get us a bite to eat from Olive Garden as I have nothing to even make a sandwich out of tonight. He should be home in a second so I need to get off and set up some tray tables so we can eat.

Talk to you all in the morning. Faye
  • Good Evening, Flowers! Another long day in my corner of the world. The kids were here in time for dinner and just left a half hour ago. Bob thought the winter festivities were in a park close (7 - 8 blocks) to us so we walked there to watchl It's been a long time since I've walked there and I could tell it in my hips. Well, everything is scheduled for tomorrow which surprised us. The kids played on the playground equipment even though most of it was buried in snow. We had some major melting today so it will be slippery tomorrow morning. We went to set up the bell tables after church this evening. Practice is at 9:30 but I think we are still going to early church first.

Maggie -- Thank you for sending the recipes; I haven't read it them yet but I'm sure they're good. Yes, grocery prices are going up around here also, and not just by a few cents at a time but by dollars!

"Gma" -- Glad you are home safe and sound once again. It's nice you could spend time with Jackson and others that you haven't seen for awhile.

Susan -- on losing another .2 part of a #! The scale is going in the right direction and that's what's important.

I need to iron a shirt for Bob to wear tomorrow. Enjoy your weekend. They fly by too fast!

    Jean -- in Iowa!
  • Good morning all! I am up to my ears in laundry and stuff to put away so got in here kind of late this morning. I also had to wash sheets since Kelly stayed with us and it was time for our bed sheets so lots and lots of laundry.

Jack has dr stuff going on next week. On Tuesday he has his cardiology appt, which is his semi yearly thing then on Thursday he has his esophogram to find out what is going on there. On Monday next he has an appt to do his colonoscopy, but it must be a consult first as they sent no info or prescription for elimination before the procedure so we shall see. I told him he better change the appt and get a referral for this dr so there are no problems. They have royally screwed up the meds so he isn't taking them right now. Our prescription won't allow this medication right away you have to start with a generic. If no generic, then the dr has to indicate this is a medical necessity. Jack is all irritated about it so is refusing to do anything until he sees her again, which is in 3 months so we shall see after his gi thingy what happens. Maybe she will want to see him sooner.

Jean: I can't even describe to you how much snow they had up there and dang if it didn't snow again while we were there, the day before we left actually. It was seriously cold too. Most days below zero wind chill and I was not equipped for that at all. I was thrilled to get out of town and into 50 degree weather again. Jay's street had so much snow that when two cars parked across from each other, you couldn't get down the street. Jack had to back up to the next cross street to get out. Ugh, it was just awful.

The funeral home where the service was held also does weddings and wedding receptions. Have you ever heard of such a thing? It was really a lovely place, but it is very expensive I hear. They have this huge beautiful kitchen just as you walk in and the bathrooms rival ones in high end hotels.

I am trying to find us a hotel for June. We plan on going to Indiana for Jackson's birthday. He was telling us all about his birthday party this year. He was first having a batman party, then avengers, then superheros. He told me at dinner he wanted us all to dress in a costume so he wants granddad in the green goblin, which is a bad guy, but I can't remember who he wanted me to come as. I do remember it was a woman and it was a "good guy." He was getting sick while we were there so I imagine it is in full swing by now. He was coughing and when we left he had a runny nose and a bit of a fever, but that didn't stop him from running all over the place. He is one wild child that is for sure.

My other grandson is being inducted into the beta club on Friday and I am looking forward to going to that. I am so very proud of him. It is basically like National Honor's Society, which is what we had in high school. He will be able to take this with him through middle school next year right into high school. He is also president of the student council this year. When we were in Indiana Kelly was telling us that at the moment, Thomas wants to be a pilot. She said one of the schools they were thinking about for college was Notre Dame and his granddad almost died. Jack absolutely, positively hates ND! He said he would have to win the lottery so he could pay for him to go somewhere, anywhere else! It was pretty funny.

Well gals, I need to get going. I have so much to do to get the house back in order today. Have a lovely day. Faye
  • Simply Sunny Sunday
    GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

We are having wonderful sunny weather and it is supposed to warm up some more. The snow is melting quite nicely for lots of it got soaked in. Went out to eat at a steak house and I ordered open flame grilled pork chops which came with a baked potato, baked apple wedges and a green tossed salad. I ate the salad and used my usual method of dipping my fork in the dressing so I had just a fraction of it. I brought home half of the potato, one chop and most of the apples. That makes a another meal. I got plenty to eat and stopped when I had eaten my fill. In olden days I would have finished it all because it tasted so good. I didn't even have a slice of the fresh baked bread they brought to the table. There were 6 of us and the bread stayed at the other end of the table when we said "no thank you." Not much going on here this day except for church. Tomorrow I am going to start some yogurt going in my maker and see just how this one works. It is supposed to be a good one.

DONNA FAYE Good to see you back safely. Laundry should be a whiz now you have your own dryer. Your grand kids are sure on the smart end of things. That is so neat to hear about them and what they are up to, what a treat for you. You can tell your main squeeze I don't like ND either. It doesn't get real cold here but I have clothing that keeps out the weather for we do travel some. I remember the time when we were "somewhere" and it turned real cold and we had to buy jackets. We now have jackets which we keep in the Jeep. Also a pair of sturdy gloves and other emergency equipment for if we have to do anything to the vehicle. Having been stuck in a snow storm in that van and having to be rescued sure taught us a lesson we learned well. Just trying to be prepared and not caught in our un-a-wares. I love having a "snatch-em strap" for I used one a few times yanking folks out of being stuck on my way to or home from work on several occasions out on the left coast.

JEAN & SUSAN I do hope this day is kind to you.

    Type at y'all later.
