Good morning gals. It is going to be a super weather week here in Elvisland. It got up to 65 yesterday and we even got warm enough to turn on the ac as I had the oven on.
I fixed us a meatloaf dinner last night, which was good and I finished all the trip laundry, the sheets and leftover laundry. We made the beds, put everything away and did the dishes. The house is all nice and tidy as I had cleaned it completely right before we left. I am going to do a bit of vacuuming and dusting this morning and tackle that other sock of Kelly's and get it done and start a new pair.
We had a really nice visit with everyone including my sister while we were up there. I think she knew it was coming. Come to find out it looks like he had the flu for the previous couple days and had possibly aspirated vomit into his lungs when he couldn't turn over on his own in bed. They had not kept a close eye on him and it caused his death basically. She is very angry about it, but can't do much about it. She came over to Jay's for dinner the night before we left and we had a nice time and she was able to laugh over Jackson's antics. She loves that grandson a lot. I am hoping to take Thomas to Indiana for Jackson's birthday. His mom already said he could go if nothing is going on with him. He rarely sees any of my family and he loves Jackson to death so it will be nice for him. Maybe we will take the two boys to Chuck E Cheese or something.
Susan: I just finished a fabulous book I actually got free on my Iphone. It was nice because I could read it on the way home when I wasn't driving and I read it in the hotel room too. My phone is backlit so I can read in the dark when Jack is sleeping. I just want Jack's problem to be fixed so he doesn't have something serious happen. I know it is something that needs to be taken care of and isn't just a case of having some heartburn once in awhile. You should never be in a position where you feel like food is stuck and you vomit and that is what he does.
Jean: Wow, you had a busy week. We need to buy a pair of jumper cables and keep in the Mariner, but we haven't done that yet. I always feel so sorry for people broke down on the road, but in this day and age and where we live it can be dicey to stop for someone.
Maggie: I have to go back in the posts and find the soup recipe and keep it. Maybe I can downsize it a lot and make it for myself for lunches. Thanks for posting it.
You girls have a lovely day today and enjoy the weather if it is nice where you are! Faye
Well Magnolias it is 43 here today in the Heartland and it feels like 43 because of all things ~ the wind isn't blowing so no wind chill. Not much on my ticket today to get punched. I need to plan my day. The dogs are at the groomer and Will is out running errands and all is quiet at the home front. I am going to make some yogurt soon for I now have some 1% milk to use in it. We still have some other yogurts that we need to use up first. I am anxious to use my new appliance but will wait. I received my wok book Breath of a Wok I was waiting for and it is interesting history plus recipes and pictures of the folks. It will make interesting reading. When I seasoned my wok I noticed it wasn't quite level on the botton for it rocked. We pounded it flat and if it decides to bow again we can pound it some more. With that book I mentioned I am learning things I never knew which is a good thing. To keep your mind active always strive to learn at least 3 new things each day. I sure do hope I show a loss at weigh in tonight. She is starting an hour earlier so folks who want to celebrate can weigh and leave for their celebration.
DONNA FAYE Thank you for starting a fresh thread this day. Isn't it nice to come home from a trip to a nice clean house. Now that you have your work done you can sit and knit. Let me know if you can't locate that recipe in the archives for I can send it to you easily enough. It would be easy to cut down to 4 servings instead of the 8. It is just so good. I have some in the freezer as I type. Next time I have some I will make a batch of Krustaez fat free corn bread. I also eat things Will doesn't care for when he is gone and sometimes when he isn't. The other day I had shrimp and he had chili beans. He is in for a big surprise when I start using the wok regularly once again. He has forgotten some of the things I used to make in one that he liked. He will always pick out the mushrooms and give them to me though. I think the only thing I make where he does eat the mushrooms is in Beef Strogonauf. OH yum. Now that is a good one. We like enough of the same things it isn't hard to make a menu for us. Sometimes I just want some sort of shell fish and he doesn't mind if I have it at all. I sure wish we had a Red Lobster nearer to us.
JEAN & SUSAN Are you having a good day or a Moody Monday.
Well Magnolias I need to get a move on and do something constructive this day. Type at y'all later
Good Morning, Flowers! I drove to church in sunshine this morning but now the clouds have moved in and it's kind of dreary. We are still in the mid 30s for the day. The money balanced so I was happy about that. I've got lots on my "to do" list but won't start anything until this afternoon after Bob goes back to the office.
"Gma" -- Thank you for starting the new thread today. I can't believe you turned your air on already! Our furnace has finally slowed down so I'm hoping our really cold weather is over with. Bob always thought I was nuts when I cleaned house before leaving on vacation, but I like coming home to just laundry to do right away. I am hungry for meatloaf! I don't know why but mine just haven't been turning out like they used to. They don't brown on top so don't know if I don't bake them long enough or if it's my oven. Some taste ok while others are !
Maggie -- Good luck at WW tonight! Have fun with your yogurt machine and new cookbook! Bob is good about eating whatever I fix because he knows it's either "feast or famine" around here! There is always pb&j if all else fails. Since today is his birthday and he has practice tonight, I think we will eat out!
I guess I will start digging through recipes. I need a dessert of some sort for crafty club on Thursday. Anyone have a suggestion for something simple and easy?
Good evening, ladies! It was 70 degrees today. Very welcome!
I had my applique bee this day and that was fun as always. We had lunch from Tropical Smoothie. Their Hawaiian Breeze smoothie made with Splenda is only 4 points for 24 ounces so that is a real treat. We aren't having Bible study tonight so people can go out for Valentine's Day. I'm happy to have an evening with nothing on the agenda.
Faye, that would be so nice if you could take T with you for Jackson's birthday. I sometimes get that blocked and cough until I throw up when I am eating. Not too often but enough for it to be annoying. For some reason, it's usually at lunch more than any other time. The doctor seems to attribute it to esophogal spasms. I have a very low dose of Elavil (25 mcg) that I take for it. It seems to work some. Getting old is not for sissies! I probably won't put the AC on until May or June. I never put it under 78 degrees. I'm always cold.
Jean, I hate having to clean the china closet. There is a lot of stuff to be washed in there. I have a whole house air purifier because of my asthma and it does keep the dust down.
Maggie, I think you need to open a restaurant. You have such great ideas and such good recipes.
We just got through watching a movie with Tom Cruz which is called Knight and Day. Quite an adventure. I now have a headache and am going to go cut some zzzzz's when I get off of this computer. I took some head slammers and they will kick in soon. I showed a tad bit of a gain at WW point 4 of a pound, which will just have to take a few friends with it when I weigh in next Monday and show me a loss. I have fruit to cut up and get in the fridge tomorrow. Make a fruit salad w/o any dressing and it is so good. I think for tomorrow's main meal I will bake panko dipped chicken breast tenders and some of my rice mixture and fresh cooked asparagus and of course some of the fruit that has been cut up. They gave out sample bags of the Dijon Pretzel Thins at WW tonight and Will and I split the bag and both like them. They have just an illusive hint of the mustard. They would be great crumpled over top of a serving of cole slaw I imagine. I will buy a box of them next meeting and give that a try.
SUSAN Thanks for the vote of confidence in the cooking department but I am not ready to start a new career. I have been retired for about 26 years now and don't need another job. Yikes, has it really been that long. I was just a youngster when I retired. I have certainly been busy and not let any grass grow under my feet. That's when all the traveling started.
JEAN Happy Brithday to Bob. Hope you had a wonderful meal out to celebrate. I should also say congrats to you for getting the books to balance. I have been having fun reading in that book ~ quite the history. Your temp goes crazy like ours does. I think that attributes to so many folks getting colds. Quick changes in the weather. I haven't had to use a jacket for two days now. Tomorrow is to be in the high 50's near 60. More like early spring. Simple and easy is Banana Pudding.
Everyone have a nice nights sleep and rest. My headache is now gone and I can go to sleep quickly. Type at y'all later.
Good morning all! We are in for another beautiful day around here. I am so ready for spring to get here. We need to get out back and get things cleaned up for spring. Everything seems to look like a mess in the winter time. Living in a condo provides its own set of problems getting rid of stuff though. We have to find a way to do it ourselves and we don't have a pickup truck to do that kind of stuff. My table and chairs out back are finally shot after about 10 years and need replacing that's for sure. I got a steal on them for $100 for table, 4 chairs and umbrella. The chairs were very sturdy and had pads included to match the umbrella. Over the years they have gotten rusty and such so they need to go.
Maggie: Hope you are now feeling better and the headache is a thing of the past. Jack and I have seemed to have more allergy issues this year than last and I get some headaches with them once in awhile. I know you migraines don't compete though. Kelly has migraine issues and it just totally dibilitates her. You will give that tiny weight gain the ole one two next week.
Jean: Hope Bob had a nice birthday. Yesterday was the 22nd anniversary of my mil's death. Of all days to pass away on Valentine's Day and it was very unexpected on top of that. The trip to Texas was horrible, our car caught fire and burned everything in it up, Jack seriously sprained his ankle in the rainy weather trying to get stuff out of the car before it was totally engulfed and had to ride in a Greyhound bus for hours with a hugely swollen foot. We lost all our clothing, all of Jays artwork, Kelly's toys and things, even my wedding ring, which was in a pouch in the suitcase as the prong had come loose. We had enough cash to buy bus tickets to Lubbock and for a comb and toothbrush and toothpaste for us and that was it. We had to go without eating the whole way because we had no money as it was all in travelers checks and was in the glove compartment of the car. We got the money back of course, but the car burned up in the middle of nowhere in Arkansas. So, Valentine's Day is not always a happy memory for us. Having a clean house to come back to takes a huge amount of stress off of me. I don't feel like I have so much to do to get things back to normal.
Susan: I am hoping T can go to Indiana. He does love Jackson and the feeling is mutual. Sounds like you "bee" went well yesterday and so did your lunch. I love smoothies but so many of them are loaded with sugar as a lot of them have powdered sugar in them. The thing is, you don't need all that sugar to make them taste good, the juice does that all buy itself.
Jack's yearly cardiology appt is today. I am not going to go. There isn't anything I really need to be there for and hopefully they won't be backed up the wazoo and he can get in and out. He had a PSI test and they checked his cholesterol and such at his regular dr appt before we left town so if he takes the results, he may not have to have another blood test after his appt. His HDL is still lower than they would like so he is going to get the "you need more exercise" speech. His weight is up too, but they never say a word about that.
Well girls, I am going to go and put away dishes in the dishwasher and start morning chores. Jack should be up anytime as he had to take a sick day to go to the doctors. Have a great day and hope you all are having a warmup like we are here. Faye
Good Morning, Flowers! The weatherman promised "warmer and sunshine" today; it's cloudy, windy, and 17 degree wind chill. The bird bath heater was unplugged this morning so the birds and squirrels will have to ice skate until the water thaws again. Enough snow has melted so the deer have not come to visit the last few nights. They were emptying the bird feeders and draining the bird bath on their nightly visits. I have undusting, as Jane would say, and scrubbing bathrooms today. I need to decide on my dessert for Thursday and make a grocery run. I've never "entertained" this group of ladies before so would like to at least have the top layer looking spit shined.
Susan -- Tropical Smoothie sounds like a fun place to go. I have a very heavy cut glass water pitcher that sits in my curio cabinet. My grandma used to have it on her diningroom table and the sun would shine on it to make it sparkle like diamonds. The sun hits my cabinet twice a year for about a week each time; once in the spring from the west and again in the fall from the east as the sun moves around. Is your air purifier a separate machine or is it part of your furnace?
Maggie -- You will have the tiny gain gone by next week along with some friends! I saw Panko in the grocery store last week and forgot to tell you. We ended up eating at a sandwich/coffee shop last night. It was 6:15 when Bob got home from practice and all of the nicer restaurants were full. That was ok because I had on my usual jeans and sweatshirt outfit so didn't want to change.
"Gma" -- With so much snow melting it is looking pretty grungy around here too. I have a mountain of bird seed shells on the deck and leaf piles all over. It snowed before the final leaves were bagged last fall because our trees are all the last to give up their leaves. I hope Jack has a good cardiology appt.; perhaps the exercise lecture will "click" this time. We need to get back outside to walk.
I need to get dressed and get a move on! Have a terrific Tuesday!
It is a sunny day of 40 degrees and Spring is on it's way. Every day we get closer to planting time. We are going to enlarge our garden and put up a raised one across an area of the huge back yard. Make it long and just wide enough to reach the center from either side so as to tend the plants. It will be easier to do a raised garden that way then to plow up the existing grass area. Anyway that's the plan so far. We have most of the material to do this. But need to haul in some really good dirt. They have some out at our favorite nursery. Our friends who own the tractor store supply us with all the wood we need for their equipment comes in heavy crates. They sell those huge sprayer rigs. They are happy that we want the wood. They even loan us a nice flat bed trailor we can pull behind the Jeep to haul it home with. Will is planning on expanding his natural drying system out back also. I still have a few sun dried tomatoes to use up from the last drying session. He was just getting re-aquainted to sun drying last year and plans on expanding his efforts this year. I will also dry some of the veggies in my inside dehydrator. It's quicker and I can do that. I used up a lot of what we dried this last Christmas in jar gifts of soup and such. Life is good.
DONNA FAYE My headache wasn't a migraine (thank goodness) last night just one of the 700 other kinds. It was gone by bedtime. I slept good. I'd say it is time for you to get new yard furniture ~ 10 years is a long life for a set. What we have outside is somewhat protected by the overhang on the patio. However, we need a nice table and chair set for we like being out there. That will be a purchase when they are on sale. You sure got a good deal on yours way back when you bought it. I think when we do get a set we will purchase a nice cover for it though since the wind does blow so here. I pray that the doc's can get done to your main squeeze what he needs to get back to exact and have comfort.
JEAN We knew restaurants would be packed last evening so we opted to stay in for the meal. We go out to eat enough. In fact on Sunday we cut back to eating out only at lunch time. I love eating out but it is really better for my program if I fix my own and I do know how. We were eating out at least 3 times a week and now have cut back to one. I am talking about "sit down" restaruant eating. Guess that is why I have been yacking here more about food and cooking. We never went out to eat that I remember when I was a kid. I remember what a thrill it was to go out to a Chinese restaurant when we were studying about that country in 7th grade. The whole class was taken to eat lunch at that really good restaurant. Mama Sue Hoos ~ I still remember the shrimp there was huge. Times have sure changed for kids hardly ever do eat at home. Fast food was not so everywhere back then. Only a few drive in's that had the gals on roller skates. Restaurant eating was what there was. In high school on some days a bunch of us would take our lunch money and drive to town and eat at the Blue Onion which was a walk in restaurant. We got back to school on time too. Life was kinder and slower back then. Not so much of the ugly that is out there now days. My, I do go on.
Have a wonderful day all y'all. Type I will later.
Good morning to you ladies. It is absolutely gorgeous out and supposed to be in the 70's today.
I am watching the movie "She Devil" with Roseanne Barr. It is a cute movie. Just finished watching "Cheyenne" on the western channnel. Boy, that was one handsome hunk of a man back in his younger days. Clint Walker actually still lives out west somewhere. He has always pretty much remained a cowboy sort I guess.
Maggie: I didn't eat out when we were young either. I remember getting to eat at McDonalds when we would have something special with Camp Fire Girls. We also would get to eat out once in awhile when we went on vacation. When I was in high school, I used to save up my babysitting money and would occasionally run to the drugstore for lunch. I could get a cherry coke, ham salad sandwich, and chips for 30 cents!!! They had the best ham salad. Come to find out, it wasn't really ham salad but ground up bologna! Anyway, it was always really good. Today everyone eats out all the time, fast food places are on every corner so no surprise so many of us are fat.
Jean: Sooner or later you have to thaw out. You sure have had cold temps this year. I am hoping we are over with cold stuff and start warming up towards spring. I am so over winter this year. Part of Jack's exercise problem is his knees. I don't think anyone wants to walk when your knees hurt and his hurt all the time. At least he got his referral and has made his ortho appt. He does want to wait until May to get his surgery though so he has enough sick time built up he can be off 6 weeks for it. Of course, he doesn't know exactly what needs to be done yet. Tomorrow is the esophogram and I am hoping they can find his problem and we get that straightened out. Did Bob have a nice birthday this year?
Tonight is beef stew night. I am using up a couple pieces of steak that I have had in the freezer. Jack is supposed to have something not spicy and such for dinner so I figured soup would be the ticket.
I guess I better get myself in gear and get my chores done. They don't do themselves. Have a wonderful day today. Faye
Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is supposed to shine again today but so far it is a "no show." It is also supposed to be in the high 40s today and 50s tomorrow; I'm hoping that happens! I decided to make a lemon bundt cake for crafty club tomorrow. I haven't made it in years so hope it turns out. If not, I'm buying cheesecake from a local restaurant!
Maggie -- We still have a back yard full of snow and you are talking about planting a garden. We have lost a lot of snow this week and the grass is beginning to show along the curbs and driveways. Spring has to be on the way! We did eat out when I was a kid, but just at local 'mom 'n pop' type cafes because the owners were customers of my dad's and he felt we should return the favor. I just remember ordering hamburgers and not liking the bun "crunchy" because they browned them on the grill.
"Gma" -- I remember my very first McD's visit when hamburgers, fries, and drinks were all 15 cents! I don't remember how old I was but do remember my dad grumbling that they didn't have car hops. I'll be thinking of Jack tomorrow. I'm sure he is tired of doctor appts. and having tests done.
Susan -- Are you and today?
I need to declutter my bathroom counter and get busy on my cake. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
It is in the 70's this day and sunny. AH spring is in the air. I have had a dickens of a time getting my printer to recognize a new cartridge in. It is the right brand that I have always used and it kept saying it wasn't there. My computer told me it was installed but the printer didn't know it for some reason. I ended up just turning off the printer and back on and it still didn't work right but when I unplugged it and plugged it back in ~ it worked fine. Some glitch in it I guess made it cranky. It sends mixed signals anyway. It told me I was low on ink a month ago and I have printed a lot of things since then. When it printed out a color wrong this day I knew it was time to give it fresh ink. I don't have a clue what I am going to do this day besides some glass work. Better get a menu going for dinner ~ still time to thaw something. Stir fry - yep I will do a stir-fry. I can thaw out some chicken tenders and I have lots of veggies I can cut up and make a tasty low point dinner. Chicken, asparagus, bell pepper, onion, celery and baby carrots all served over some pasta. Sounds good to me. Looking at the recipes in my books they seem to all call for at least 2Tbsp of oil. I can cut that in half and use spray if more is needed. Yesser, my wok is calling my name. I will use some smoked paprika on the chicken. That stuff is sure spendy. It comes to $90 bucks a pound. I certainly don't buy it by the pound but do keep my little container of it in a cupboard away from sunlight. I have hot, mild and smoked paprika I keep most of my spices in a cupboard. Ones I use almost daily that don't deteriate quickly are on a rack on the wall. Like for instance garlic powder, lemon pepper w/o salt and the Italian leafy ones, etc. One thing about spices if they do lose some of their zip you can just use more of it in the recipe. I use very little salt but some season salt on occasion. Very little. We get more sodium than we really need from canned veggies. Salt is a preservative. I don't buy spices that contain salt like the lemon pepper. Mrs. Dash is the only one we have found that is salt free. I use a lot of lemon pepper and have lots of different spices and blends. It is my main most favorite for chicken, steak, pork chops and eggs. If I was to only have a few spices it would be cut down to 10 I believe that I could get by with.
DONNA FAYE I don't like that nasty mouth Rosanne Barr so I won't be watching anything she does. But if you like her go ahead and do so. Your stew sounds good. And that Clint Walker was surely a hunk. I do hope the doc can fix your husband up.
JEAN Well the weather sure feels like spring here. I am sure it will turn cold again before planting season does actually get here though. But we like to plan. I can now visualize what the garden will look like and that is a good thing. With the way prices are going up on produce we will be very happy we did plant a small garden for our use. The berry plants we planted last year are looking good.
SUSAN Howdy, way out east. Having a good day are you?
This has not been a hungry day for me at all and I only ate about a fourth of a sandwich for lunch. That is a good thing. With the stir fry I will make tonight after class we will have a bowl of that fruit I cut up yesterday. Life is good.
Good evening, ladies! It was in the 50s today and overcast.
I'm having a hard time with asthma again. It seems to be letting up a little now, but I've been using my nebulizer. I'll probably sleep in the recliner tonight because laying down makes it worse. I'm making some Campbell's chicken noodle soup for my supper. That's what I always want when I don't feel well.
I probably won't get back in here in the morning as Jack has to be at the hospital at 8 am so thought I would just come read what everyone is doing and post this evening.
Susan: You take it easy, rest and use your meds. We will still be here when you feel better.
Maggie: I am not a fan of her either, but this movie she made was years and years ago and was before she got that nasty mouth and attitude and all the other garbage. Hope you enjoyed your stil fry. We enjoyed the stew. It was pretty yummy even if it was in the 70's here today. Jack wasn't supposed to eat anything with spice in it and this was fairly bland, no heat or anything so I thought it would be ok.
Jean: My very first job was with Mcdonald's and it was right after they came out with the Big Mac. We used to have to wear black shoes, hose, black skirts (no pants back then) and these blue uniform tops that zipped up the front. On our heads we wore those ridiculous paper hats. I think hamburgers at that time were around 22 cents. I could work so fast and cleanly they wanted me to work the grill, but my manager found out there was a BIG problem with that. The grill is set up for righties! I couldn't do it no matter how much I wanted to because of the way it was set up and how you had to flip the meat. So, I stayed out front waiting on customers, which is what I preferred anyway. I always complain to Jack when we get something from Mcdonalds and it is thrown together that we would have gotten raked over the coals for putting together sandwiches like they do now. Back then everything was wrapped in paper and the big mac had this little round sleeve on it to keep it together. About 3 or 4 years ago I saw in the South Bend paper that one of the girls that used to work with me there passed away. She and her sister both worked there and her sister worked there all these years and is now corporate! That little ole job helped pay for my wedding! When Jay was a baby I found this adorable little tshirt that had a big mac on the front and said, "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun." Each layer said what it was. It was really cute and I have never seen another one like it.
Well, I guess I should get off the computer and see if there is something to watch on tv for just a bit. I have my alarm set for 5:30 so I can get up and get around a bit before showering and dressing to go to the hospital. I hope we don't have to wait hours and hours to get this procedure done. Jack doesn't get to eat past midnight so he will be starved like he always is when he doesn't get to eat for a test. Have a good Thursday all! Faye
Maggie -- I just bought some paprika and in all 3 stores it was labeled "Spanish" and there were no other choices. My old container just had paprika on the label. You will have such fun when your garden is planted and you can watch it grow.
Susan -- I hope you are feeling better soon. Did anything in particular contribute to the asthma this time?
"Gma" -- I will be thinking of you and Jack tomorrow morning. I hate the "hurry up and wait" routine at the hospital. I hope that something can be done to help him.
I'm tired and heading towards bed. See you all tomorrow.
Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is shining, the snow is melting, and it's a beautiful breezy 45 degrees in my neighborhood. I've been checking for cobwebs and doing some last minute picking up before this afternoon when the "group" comes. I had one gal email last night and said she was coming; that will make 8. I sent the email invite on Monday and everyone else let me know by Tuesday eve. GRRRRR!
"Gma" -- Hope things are going ok for Jack this morning.
I need to change clothes and put on my face. Hope you all have a GREAT day with GREAT weather!
