New CANADIAN FALL Thread ...
Hello to all our CANADIAN friends out there ~ this is our new fall thread. Summer is pretty well over in most places I guess; although this weekend we had temps up into the 90's -- maybe summer's last hurrah ...
The kiddies are back in school this week; and the leaves are starting to turn yellow on some trees in our neighborhood, so that's a sign that fall has just arrived here. Hope to see lots of you come by and visit -- to share what's going on in your part of the country and don't forget the weather; we like to here about that too (it's a national pastime, you know) ... ;) BTW, I live in Northern Ontario; but even though I was born in Southern Ontario, I have lived here many more years than I did there, so my Dad says that now I am officially a northerner ... Rosebud :flow1: |
Thanks for the Welcome Rosebud!
Yep, I've been a dieter for the last 12 years - most recently in 2008 lost weight on Weight Watchers, gained (almost) everything back, then started Atkins in January 2010 - lost some weight, went off track & am now back on track! ... still feels like summer here - high 30's today (I don't know what the humidex was) but the dog is not having long walks right now! /cheryl |
Hey Rosebud - thanks for opening the thread. I was born in S. Ontario too! - and hi Cheryl - we're neighbours!
Still enjoying the summer weather here, planning on doing some gardening this week-end as well as doing an art studios tour. Usually try to do a couple of those each fall; the Ottawa valley is so beautiful at this time of year, and later on in Sept/early Oct. |
Hey!!
Found this thread and add me to the list! I'm Maddie,42 and living in Nova Scotia. It hit 43C here....HERE...today. Crazy! And yes we are waiting for Hurricane Earl to pound us over the weekend. ugh. CanNOT wait for school to start! My youngest is going to school so that means Momma has the house to herself for a few blessedly quiet hours a day. Love my kids but also LOVE silence... Nice meeting you! Maddie |
Hey! Im Jenny, 24! from PEI. September 1st brought our hottest day yet this year! hard to believe its already september!!! wow
|
Hey all you eastern people :) Greetings from the west. It is significantly cooler over here :( We haven't had much of a summer to speak of, you may have seen me complaining about it in the previous thread. Send some sun our way please? I am seriously not ready for fall, no matter how pretty it is.
|
It's up to 40 already...if I could ship 15 degrees out west you BET I would!!!! ;)
Looks like Earl is going to hit the Yarmouth area. Not a direct hit for us but still fairly close (3-4 hours away). Tomorrow is school (insert happy dance) LOL Maddie |

We do love our kids, and we do love it when schools starts! Mine is nearly 17 and 6' tall. He's just started a course that includes lots (and I mean LOTS) of phys ed. Second day they did a 10k run, yesterday it was 'suicide runs', planks, push ups, etc. And French. And Law. And I forget what else. It sure keeps it motivating for me to get to some level of fitness. (I never expect to be able to do what he does, though!)
Good luck to everyone in NS with Earl baring down! |
:welcome3: to all our NEWBIES ~ nice to have you all drop by ... hey, do we Canadians just breed tall boys or what? I here this all the time ... Some folks say it's hormones, and others say it's the fresh, clean air ... haha! Ya, right! ;)
Sent up some prayers about that hurricane Earl; hope that everyone is safe and there won't be too much damage to speak of. DH and I picked another half basket of green beans this AM before we headed up to our lot. DH & my Dad put a new roof on half of our camper as it had a bad leak and we didn't want the snow to damage it this winter. We had a break from the :hot: temps today; with some breeze and clouds, it stayed in the mid to late 70's -- we'll take that, thank you very much. It is supposed to be nice for tomorrow too, then the temps will drop a bit for the weekend ... but hey, you won't catch me complaining one bit! :D Hope you all have a fabulous Friday tomorrow ... Rosebud :flow2: |
I live in Vancouver and its not that hot out :(
I am jealous!!! I have a 4-day long weekend and I about to head out for a hike. |
Finally, the humidity broke - we had a couple of good downpours this afternoon!!!! Yah hoo!!!!
... too bad I'm too beat from this week to go & and have a good walk with the dog (my bursitis is inflamed & I need to rest the leg to stop me from getting a fever) |
I sat out on the porch this afternoon, and there was quite a breeze going. Nice to have the humidity GONE for a while! I'm still sending good thoughts to our friends in NS who have yet to see Earl, and also to anyone out in New Zealand re: the earthquake. I hope everyone is safe!
|
Hey All!
Still hit 40 today...after Earl leaves it is supposed to go "down" to 21-24ish for the next few days...THANK GOODNESS!! With our summers you never want to complain about hot sunny weather, but OMG....this is what Ontario is supposed to get...not us! ;) (no offense to you Ontario gals but VERY few of us have air conditioning down here because we usually don't need it!) Gusts are supposed to be 90-130km and rainfall about 40-70 mm. All the trees still have their leaves so yep...there will be a lot of downed trees. I'll update y'all tomorrow!! Maddie |
WOW, glad to here that Hurricane Earl had missed you so far; nobody minds a few broken branches or scattered leaves, as long as that is it.
Prayers going up for that, as well as those dear folks in New Zealand; and, for CHERYL's bursitus -- that is no fun, for sure. I have my own challenges to deal with too. :welcome: RISSA ~ glad you have joined us here -- BC is renowned for its cooler temps and rain, of course. Hope those forest fires are under control and all the smoke is gone now. We had :rain: this AM and then some :sunny: for the afternoon; then we had a couple more showers with some pretty RAINBOWS early this evening to cool things off for us. Boy, it is getting dark out there already and it's only about 8 pm. Yes, we were quite relieved when those high temps and the humidity left our area too. Hope you all have a wonderful long LABOR DAY WEEKEND ... Rosebud :flow2: |
Hey Girls - sorry I've been MIA for a couple of weeks. Kinda got in a funk and it took me a bit to get out of it. But I am re-committed yet again. Myself and 2 friends of mine are joining TOPS in the next couple of weeks after they ramp up again for the Fall season. I like TOPS. used to be a leader when I lived in NS so it helps me with the accountability. Hopefully having friends to be accountable to every day will help too.
Earl just side swept us up here. We got some heavy rain for a few hours but the wind was nothing we hadn't seen before in a normal Nor'easter. I used to live in Truro NS though so I know what its like to deal with the hurricanes and such. Its the one thing I don't miss living back up here. The heat this past week is another matter altogether. With the humidex we hit 46 on Sept. 1. Thought that day would never come to an end. Still humid up here but its finally supposed to break a bit overnight. I can't wait! I don't have kids so the back to school doesn't affect me but I can be glad for all you moms who need that few hours a day! Guess thats it for now...I promise I will be here every day good or bad. I am using MFP as well to track calories and such to help me along. Alannah |
I know we're not supposed to complain about the heat...because Eastern Canada never gets this long of a summer....but WOW, I almost want to thank Earl for breaking the humidy and letting me wear gym pants comfortably again ;)
|
ALANNAH ~ don't worry about being in a funk; come back anyways. We all have times when something in life challenges us for a while. Perfection isn't necessary, but persistence really helps -- just keep on, keepin' on. I always say it's really about the "Law of Averages" ... even if you have an off-plan day here or there -- over the week and month, it will all wash out. Some days I just count as a maintenance day (about once a week); and if I flub something, I just make a correction the next snack, meal, or day. That new strategy keeps me from giving up if I make a mistake. There is no end to this back-2-health journey; I'm in it for the long-haul this time (5+ years so far).
HI JENNA ~ ya, we here ya on the humidity; I don't even mind the 80's, but it's the humidity that is so hard on us. My SM was just telling us that in some areas of Alberta, they don't get the humidity we do out east; her brother lives in a small town near Calgary, and he says that they rarely ever get any humidity in his area (sorry, I can't recall the name of the place right now). Well, we had :rain: for most of the weekend with very cold temps; seems it's one way or another, eh? Hot & humid; or cold & wet & windy. I'm glad that Hurricane Earl behaved himself and didn't cause too much grief for you easterners. We finally had some lovely :sunny: today; I think someone upstairs heard my earnest prayers. It got up into the high 60's with the sun, so that wasn't too bad really. We had leftover BBQ spit chicken, a mix of veggies, and coleslaw, sliced toms and cukes. Boy the veggies and salads can sure fill you up; I picked some more green beans and we had some of them for dinner too. Hope you all have a great week coming up ... Rosebud :flow2: |
We've had rainy, cool weather here too. I think Fall is definitely coming upon us; I watched a chipmunk under our birdfeeder stuffing his cheeks and running to hide his loot, then coming back for more. I must have seen make at least 20 trips -even the crows didn't scare him away!
Hope everyone is well and starting the week off right! |
Yes Earl threw us for a bit of a loop here...he was supposed to hit around Digby/Saint John (which is 3-4 hours away from us) but ended up coming ashore a mere HOUR away. Needless to say we lost power for a few hours and our gazebo is toast. Oh well...all those things can be replaced and/or fixed.
Nice to see that we have some maritimers here! I think we just need someone from Newfoundland and we'll be from coast to coast. Rosebud...that's awesome that you have a garden! I used to in our other house...and well before having kids. Do you freeze and can items? I buy in bulk and freeze a whack of fruits and veggies for the winter and also get a side of pork and beef. Well my brain is begging for sleep and tomorrow is school....7:30 -2:30 and I am KID FREE!!! (insert Maddie doing the happy dance) ;) Maddie |
Well, back to work tomorrow for me. I took an extra day off so I had today to relax a bit. It's supposed to be rainy here all week. I did get my walk in today. 40 minutes. I didn't go yesterday but I did on Sunday for 30 mins so at least its a start.
Re-joining TOPS again here in a couple of weeks. I am giving them a week or two to get going again after the summer. Actually I guess it'll probably be next wednesday that I go. Or at least that's the plan anyway. I just wanted to stop by. I'll check in later again. Must go see what I want to wrangle up for supper tonight. Its just me so it isn't like I have to worry about anyone else LOL. Alannah |
 HELLO TO OUR FELLOW CANUCKS OUT THERE ~ we had :rain: most of the day and they are calling for that for some of this week as well. We do usually get spring and fall rain though; so this is to be expected for our area really. Mr. :sunny: tried to come out around dinnertime but some very dark clouds came in right after. They are expecting a little sunshine for tomorrow AM and all day Friday; that would be nice.
I made up a nice soup/stew for dinner out of leftovers; perfect for a cold, wet day. Now, I am having some tea & toast with PB for my evening snack tonight as I was quite a bit under my calorie allotment for the day. MADDIE ~ here's the happy  guy for ya ... Yes, we have gardens along the south and west side of this place; they were already there when we moved here, so I just planted in them. In the spring, I had a salad garden with lettuce, radishes, onions, parsley, spinach, and Swiss chard; then, I planted three patches of green beans. The front gardens had all flowers; and the south-west had flowers and flowering bushes. Next year, I may even try a couple of tomato plants to see how they do here. SEA ~ ya, we see the same behavior here; plus birdies filling up before their flight south too, so we put extra stuff out during this time. ALANNAH ~ good for you getting your big walks in; I got lots of walking done around here today, as we were putting in new(er) laundry machines today. With that and cleaning, my poor feetsies felt like they were going to fall off ... ;) As a matter of fact, it's time to put them up again -- will likely read some, if I can before nodding off, that is. I did get a bit of reading done just before dinner for about an hour. Maybe I should try crocheting tonight instead. Have a great week everyone ... Rosebud :flow2: |
Yay Canadian thread!
I bounce back and forth from Newfoundland (home) and S-Ontario (work) I haven't been outside yet to give claims on the weather but I'm sure it's humid and too hot like always here in T.O :) Had lots of fun in the wind and rain for the long weekend though! |
Signs of fall abound! The chickadees and goldfinches are scarfing at the birdfeeders (as are the squirrels). The Canada geese are gathering in the fields. I can't wait until the leaves change colour - it is so glorious!
Weather here is darkly overcast, but no rain yet today. Likely to come this afternoon though. I took a short walk this morning (my first 'unescorted' walk since surgery) and it felt great to walk in cooler weather. I guess my timing is good for that! Hope everyone is having a super day! |
:welcome3: NUMBER 8 ~ glad you found us over here; so we now have a Newfoundlander & Torontonian in one ... Yes, a vast difference in the weather between the two places for sure. Do you fly between those two places for your work?
We have :rain: here again today, so it is wet and cold here right now. It feels like it has cooled off a bit since this morning too -- that may be the wind. I hope it warms up as the week goes a long. SEA ~ yes, we see the Canadian Geese going through the area here too; we saw a group that was guiding the young ones -- with a big momma goose encouraging them constantly as they flew by: it was so touching to see and hear them. I prayed that they would make it safely to their destination. |
ohhhh the canadian geese :dizzy:
... we have so many of them here, they make a BIG mess on our riverside boardwalk, and in our big recreation fields down at the marina - beautiful yes (and not-so-beautiful when treadding where they once were!) |
Oh yes, the mess of the Canada Geese. My son played soccer in Kingston last summer in a field that had been taken over by the Geese. You can imagine the mess! We made him wash off and change in a Tim Horton's washroom before we would drive back home!
|
LADIES ~I still think the Canadian Geese are beautiful -- they stop off here too, but at the lakes and fields in the country becuz they have to dodge the hunters. I don't know why your town fathers (gov mps) don't look at this as a "job creation project" and hire seasonal workers to clean up after them. I think they are a national treasure, like our precious moose are ... and they have to stop off somewhere on their way down south as it is too cold up here for them ... go geese go ... :D
|
Add me to the "not so much loving the geese" group! Our campground beach/shore area is covered with green goose poop from late April until June. Not a pretty sight. One good thing is...all the dogs are allowed off leash to chase the buggers while they are there. Once the weather warms up and they spend more time elsewhere...dogs must be leashed.
Maddie |
Rosebud - I agree, the Canada Goose is a national treasure, and it would be a great if someone could figure out a way to keep them away from places where children play. I mean, really, you can't imagine what a soccer field looks like in the Spring/Fall unless you've seen it. Ugh. And I'm not sure it's all that healthy for the guys to play on it either! At the very least, they slip and slide more than usual
On another note, another rainy day expected in Ottawa today, and cool (I think they said a max of 15 degrees). I'm still counting on the 'warmer, longer fall' that they were talking about last week, and planning fall (trans)planting in my garden! |

Oy...us too. It's been getting colder at night. Last night I went for a rainy run, tho...it was a nice sprinkling and not soak-you-to-the-skin rain.

HI All! I'm dragging my butt back here, it's been awhile since I posted in the Canada thread. But I'm back to it now. And hopefully be sticking around for some time.
It's fall time way up here in the Yukon but no frost yet!! Keeping my fingers crossed as I have a few more things still in the garden! |
:welcome2: SnowboundChick! I think you're our first poster from Yukon! I can't believe you still have stuff in your garden this late. I always had this image of Yukon being frost-bound by early September... I'll try to send some heat vibes your way (not that I want to lose the warmth here -- I'm sharing!)
|
 HELLO FELLOW CANUCKS ~ nice to see a couple of returnees this fall -- SNOWBOUND ... glad that you have returned. I know that many Canadians get very busy over the summer, then they come back in the fall and winter months. I still have green beans in my side garden; the frost hasn't bothered them yet. I only planted 3 small patches and got over 3 baskets already; if the frost holds off for a while, I will get some more yet too. They are one of my favorite low-cal veggies ... :D
Many of my flowers are still in bloom out there; the brown-eyed Susans, the very tall gladiolas; and the gold cinquefoil bush too. Plus the yellow daylilies have decided to have a second round of blossoming; very cool! We went up to our lot today as we had lovely :sunny: for the whole day today. We did a few small things around there; I crocheted a couple of squares and did some tidying up while DH did his thing. WE had a lovely double lawnchair (with a table in between) made for up there so we hope to take it up there next trip. The guy did a terrific job too. Hope you all have a wonderful fall weekend ... Rosebud :flow2: |
Hi everyone! Hope your week-end is starting as well as mine; it's SUNNY over there, and I've hit the 250 lbs mark (well, 250.8, but I don't round up!!!)
I haven't been able to garden because of the cancer thing, and the yard has turned into a jungle. My brown-eyed Susans have spread from side to back yard, and bring bright colour to some of the darker corners :) Our postage-stamp-sized lot has such a variety of flora and fauna. The adult neighbours keep saying they never see anything :?: but their kids come by and wonder why they don't have insects in their yards  There were boys back there the other day as quiet as can be watching the chipmunks fill their cheeks! It makes being home alone while I'm on leave very entertaining! |
Most of my garden is in but my green house still has tomatoes and cucumbers in it. But my Dad's garden still has a lot in it. I think we'll have to go pick/dig soon. It's been a crazy summer. Lot's of stuff in our personal life. My Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer and he told us at the beginning of August, we knew it was cancer since June just not how bad. It's lung cancer. I quit smoking in June for the hundredth time and I haven't looked back.
I've been struggling for the last year trying to keep it together but failed and now I'm finally getting back to myself. I joined a challenged over in the 100lb Club to lose 50lb by the New year. It'll be a good start. |
Well for a saturday, I've managed to get a lot done so far and it's only 3pm. Was up early since Chancey (the pooch) decided it was time for her to get up so mom had to as well. I don't mind really. I only have her 1/2 the week anyway so if I get up a little earlier so be it. I was out and back from doing a few errands by 11 am and have 3 loads of laundry done, cleaned the bathroom (so NOT my favorite chore!), and bathed Chancey. Not bad for a few hours I guess. Making spagetti for supper. I use only whole wheat or multigrain pasta so it won't be too bad.
In one week we have dropped around here from 43C to 14 C. What a difference. Its nice out today but with the breeze a bit chilly. I like it though. I got a chill bathing Chance with the cold water from the hose but she doesn't care. Gradually getting myself back on track around here food wise as well. Not as good as I should be - but a definite improvement over a couple of weeks ago. My short term goal would be out of the 200s by Jan 1. Thats 32 lbs. May not be completely doable - but I am going to work hard for it and see what happens. Going to change my ticker to a goal one for Jan 1. Hope you girls are having a nice weekend so far. I'll check in again later! Alannah |
Hi everyone, great to see so many new and returning faces.
I have been really struggling weight-wise lately. Have managed to gain back 7 pounds. :( But today is a new day and I am feeling like I am getting back on track. Went for a big grocery shopping trip at Superstore and got lots of fruit & veg so I am set for the week. Tomorrow I am going to make a menu for the upcoming week - and stick to it!!! Here is a funny story. I had enough PC points to pay for my complete order at Superstore (I have been saving them for a long time), plus since I spent over $250 I got a $25 gift card. Free groceries plus they paid me to shop there! lol! Sea, sorry to hear about the cancer thing. Hope you are on the road to a full recovery. Snow, Sorry about you Dad. Good to hear you have quit smoking. Have a great weekend everyone! |
JUDY-LYNN ~ some of that may be water-weight, but good for you for not giving up; you can do it -- just keep on, keepin' on. That was quite a bargain you had shopping; saving enuff points for free groceries & gifts too.
ALANNAH ~ wow, you got a lot done in such a short time; good for you. It is good to have a goal in front of us; give it your best shot!!! SNOWBOUND ~ sent up prayers for your DAD and your whole family; congrats on quitting smoking! Both DH & I quit over 7 years ago; the best thing we ever did ... SEAWAVE ~ sending up prayers for you for restored health and wellness; nothing like nature to sooth our souls ... We had another day up at our lot; it was even nicer than yesterday. Lots of :sunny: and warmer temps in the 70's as well. We took our double lawnchair up and I put a few coats of stain on (man, am I sore now); while DH made some stairs. It looks really good; and is really comfortable to sit on. Hope you all have a peaceful & restful Sunday tomorrow ... Rosebud :flow2: |
