Good Evening All

Sorry I have been AWOL for so long. Last week I was away doing a training session for the job I am starting next week and didn't have any access to a computer. Eating wasn't too good while away and I was surprised that I was only up 1/2 pound from the previous week. Actually I shouldn't say it wasn't good as it really was very good - just not all op. The first night for dinner was o.k. as I had chicken with salad and veggies - that took quite a bit of will-power but I was glad I did it. I was telling myself that I shouldn't pig out on my first night away as that would really screw things up for the week. One night I had liver, onions and bacon with a baked potato which I thought was the best meal I had had in a long time. That was really worth the cheat. The last night away we all went to a Chinese buffet which was scrumptious. Probably the reason I didn't gain was because we were fed lunch at the facility we were working in which was an adequate meal but not a big meal. Also there was not much time or need for snacking. They kept us too busy, even gave us homework.

I was down a bit this morning when I weighed - not my lowest but close to it. Was surprised as I stuffed myself yesterday - can't think what I had but know it was too much and not op - must be having a senior moment. I went to the doctor's this morning for a physical and he told me I was down 8 pounds since my last physical three years ago. At this rate I might reach my goal by the time I'm 75. :dizzy:

Keng - I can remember when I first started to drive I was terrified too. My dh was pushing me to drive for a couple of years before I finally got the courage to do so. We had a car with gear shifts at the time and that is what I started to learn with - not too successfully as I failed my first test which was taken downtown during lunch hour. After that I wouldn't drive for a while then about a year later at the pushing of my dh I took some private lessons in a car with automatic transmission and that is what I passed the test in. I am so glad that I am able to drive. I would be lost without a car now - particlarly since my dh passed away a few years ago so wouldn't have anyone to drive me around if I wasn't able to do so myself. I am sure you will do fine once you get used to driving. When I started to drive I would think that all the other cars on the road were aiming for me. But that feeling did pass. :D

Monet - Hope you were able to get out and celebrate Erik's birthday with him. Have a Happy Anniversay tomorrow. It's always nice to get in touch with old friends.

Jack-K - Hope you will feel better after a restful weekend.

Has anyone any experience with VALERIAN? I bought some to-day as I often have trouble getting to sleep and when I can get to sleep usually wake up several times during the night. Just wondered if anyone has tried it and what they think of it.

To all the FLORIDA gals I hope you stay safe and don't get hit my the storm.

Sorry I can't get to you all - two weeks is a lot to catch up on.:)

Have a good weekend everyone.

Marie.

Hello

Well, for dinner I had olive, pickles and triscuits and cheese, and now I am very very thirsty.... we are having a slight squall hit us - wet outside and breezy...they expect us to have winds up to 50 mph starting sometime tomorrow morning...the pine tree outside is already starting to sway some - it is the only one making me very nervous.

Bob - I am jealous you have all those movies, I have only two - both Swedish, and I am really not interested in them - got them from Netflix - and forgot to mail them back and get different ones...

Rosalie - Congrats on the weight loss!!!!!!

Monet - Happy Anniversary!!!!!

Keng - Keep practicing and pushing yourself to drive, and build up that confidence!!!!

Better get off to clean up kitchen and hit the sack, I imagine I will be offline from tomorrow on and I intend to use the time stuck in the house to scrub floors and clean the house from top to bottom...when the storm is over and I can leave the house - I will be too exhausted!

Night, Sabrina

Hey, guys! I haven't even been on my computer since the 27th. I had over 700 emails to delete, lol. Anyway, the good news is that the scale has read 162(down 1) the past two days. The bad news is that it won't tomorrow  I don't know what got into me. I had a combo from McDonald's AND a cheeseburger AND a king size candy bar. That's in addition to my "other" meals and stuff today. Well, it's over and done with now. I plan on doing much better with my eating the rest of the weekend. Maybe I'll see the 162 again, Monday? Not much going on here. Popping in to let you guys know I'm still alive. Oh yea, I still don't know anything about the house loan. I pre-qualified to see if I'm elgible to even apply. I have to bring in a couple of receipts on my medical collections and then I will apply. He said the rest of my credit looked good, just need to show that I'm paying my outstanding medical bills. So I'll probably wait until the 1st of next month before I do the loan application. I've come to learn that having or buying a house with government money(although I pay it all back) is starting to be a headache and I haven't even really started. EVERYTHING is very particular. I live on 16th section(own the rights, but not the land)land, and I don't know if I want to build on it or not because of all the crap you gotta go thru. Then, if I decide to sell it and just buy a house somewhere else, then I'll have to wait until the schoolboard is able to put it into the buyer's name before I can do anything. This process can take months. Also, I learned that I have to come up with insurance, surverying money, fees, etc...all up front. Doesn't make sense to me because it's a LOW income loan, um, hello, most low income families don't have money floating around at their disposal. But if everything is approved, I'll just have to pinch pennies or find a way to come up with the money. I really want a house. Alright, I've rambled on enough about this...it's been a little bit of new stress added each day with this, but I guess it'll be worth it in the long run.

Article: Why didn't diet save Clinton from surgery?
Why didn't diet save Clinton from surgery?

BY RONI RABIN
Staff Writer

September 4, 2004

Early this year, former President Bill Clinton traded in Big Macs for South Beach Diet specials like grilled salmon and vegetables braized in olive oil, and the junk food king slimmed down before our very eyes.

Yesterday he was diagnosed with advanced coronary artery disease and scheduled to undergo quadruple bypass surgery to open up his clogged arteries. Why now?

The short answer, doctors say, is that atherosclerosis — commonly known as hardening of the arteries — doesn't happen overnight. It can be present and silent for years, said Dr. Valentin Fuster, director of the cardiovascular institute at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York and former president of the American Heart Association.

No matter how good a diet may be — and there are no published studies assessing Dr. Arthur Agatston's South Beach Diet — it can't erase the past.

"Coronary artery disease doesn't happen in two days," Fuster said. "It develops over time. Then at some point there may be a trigger that leads to sudden closure of an artery and chest pain, but it's the tip of an iceberg."

Other risk factors besides lifestyle and diet include diabetes, high blood pressure, genetics, smoking, high cholesterol and obesity.

The South Beach Diet is a modified low carbohydrate diet that promises rapid weight loss — 8 to 13 lbs in the first two weeks — without emphasizing exercise, and is less extreme than the popular Atkins diet. Developed by Agatston, a cardiologist, it promises to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes without hunger, by relying on choosing the "right" carbohydrates — not the highly processed ones — and the "right" fats.

The first two-week phase is the strictest part of the diet, though it includes low-fat cheese snacks and Canadian bacon. During the second phase, complex carbohydrates — fruits and whole grains — are phased in.

"It may have been too little too late," Dr. Randolph Martin, a cardiologist at Emory University School of Medicine said of Clinton's dietary changes. "For years, he's had this plaque build up."

There's another possibility too, added Martin, who wrote a blurb for the back of Agatston's diet book. "He may have gone off the wagon," Martin said. Even if Clinton had been on a low-fat diet, he may well have broken it while on his book tour.

Could the diet itself be to blame? There is no scientific data to support this hypothesis, but Fuster said he has observed a similar phenomenon in some of his patients. "We have seen a number of patients who, during very drastic aggressive weight loss, may develop a coronary event," he said, adding that it is possible, though entirely theoretical, that removing fat from the body very rapidly may destabilize built up plaque.

We went to the Mexican restaurant near here for dinner to celebrate Erik's birthday. I got the poblano chili rellenos and double beans no rice. All legal. The meal would have been great if I had not eaten several handfuls of chips and dip while waiting for the food.

Now I feel stuffed, and out of it.

After my nap this afternoon, I got on the web and found a new place that sells art supplies. They were having a big sale. I am going to catch it from the hubby. :yikes: I got some very cheap pastels- a 72 color box- to play with. I think it will be easier to really play with cheaper ones. When you pay two or three dollars a stick for them, you kind of don't want to waste them! The cheap ones will help loosen me up, I hope! They also had something I am really interested in. Its a book and CD with a model in millions of different poses. Its supposed to be the next best thing to hiring a model, so I am looking forward to trying it out.

I think we are going to go out to PittyPat's Porch for dinner tomorrow night for our anniversary. We went there for our second anniversary and it was fabulous then, and is still one of the best restaurants in Atlanta. Its a huge buffet and then you order entrees. I remember the salad bar being the largest I had ever seen. When we went 26 years ago, I was six months pregnant with James, and could not eat much. I bet I can do it justice this time! I will try to stay somewhat legal.....

Guess I will sign off, put on my nightie and read a bit before I fall asleep. Sweet dreams everyone!

THE BIG ORANGE BABE 09-03-2004 11:37 PM

let me draw your attention to the following recipie:

1 can of whole jalapenos

two blocks of cream cheese, softened (low fat, fat free...you pick)

two to three pounds of ground meat (I prefer sausage)

Preheat the oven to 375. Take the jalapenos and cut off the tops then pull out the seeds. The seeds do not like to come out, so a small knife can help. Then take the cream cheese and put it into either a pastry bag or...if you are like me and don't own one...put it in a ziplock freezer back and cut a corner off. Squeeze the cream cheese into the peppers. Take the meat and wrap the peppers with it. Make it as thick or thin as you like, just remember to cook longer if it is thick! Saran wrap helps for getting it thin enough. Bake them on a cookie sheet for 30 min (or so). Serve with something to put out the fire!

So, now you can comprehend the horror that my mouth went through as I scrambled to the nearest waterfountain (this means I have to leave my desk, leave my building, walk down the path to another building, and get to their fountain).

Note to self: fill water before lunch tomorrow.

Will try to be faithful tomorrow morning...

Night all...

I have just finished watching some movies and TV shows. Anyone likes Lifetime Channel? I used to watch it all the time but not lately. Gosh, the shows always get me if don't walk away...lol. I also watched, "What Not To Wear" on TLC. I love to see those tranformations, amazing!! The show really inspire me not stay sloppy...LOL. Looking good and fashion was quite important to me when I was single but now that I am married and a mommy, I am just so sloppy!! I can be in my pijamas all day and not comb my hair by days..lol. Anyway, I shall not disgust you ladies anymore...lol. Lately, I am definitely trying to put more effort in looking better...well, sometimes :)

Dinner was spaghetti and meatballs. Don't feel like eating salad or cook any veges so didn't get my veges in. I didn't get my walk in today but will catch up tomorrow. I am feeling much better now, not terrified anymore. I am ready to drive again tomorrow but will try to stay in my county for now. I am going to build my confidence behind the wheels, the basic stuff before I hit the high crazy traffic area like today...lol. While dh is at work, I plan to learn to reverse in a straight line (the straighest possible) on my driveway. That would be fun :)

MONET : Happy Anniversary tomorrow!! Wow, 28 years, that is an awesome achievement! I agree, keep your dh for another 28 years and double that...lol. Where is PittyPat Porch? Sounds like a wonderful place. Buffet? I am sold...lol. Dh and I will be celebrating our 6th year anniversary next week. I have no idea where to go yet. He took off that day so I am excited. Glad you found some bargains on the web. Now, you can go play and make masterpieces :)

ROSALIE : Glad to see you. We have missed you. Wow, you did great while you are on training. WTG on the 8 lbs loss. Hey, going down is better than doing up!! Afterall, you feel so much better and healthier now than 3 years ago :) Thanks for sharing your driving story. I am going to keep driving till I get comfortable. I know that I will, I just need to hang on when I get terrified. In the past, I gave up so I didn't get to see the end result. I just have to keep telling myself, practice! practice! Oh, when I was in Malaysia, we had to learnt to drive in a manual car too. I had a driving instructor taught me and the first time, he took me to a busy 4-way street. When the lights turned green, I was too nervous to balance my gear and backed up the traffic...LOL. The instructor wasn't nice at all. Infact, he was the rudest man I ever met, I gave up learning to him. He won't let me have my written test result unless I finished taking my driving test with him. I just gave up because I just didn't want to see him again. I remember my legs shaked so bad after each driving lessons. That was terrible...lol. Okay, now I can laughed over it but then it wasn't funny. Automatic is definitely so much easier to learn but someday I would love to learn to drive manual again.

TRANQUIL : Glad to hear from you and know that you are safe. My FIL is in West Palm Beach. We are worried for him. We checked how he is doing tomorrow. Thanks for your support, I will keep driving.

BOB : Thanks for the article. Well, I agree change do not happen overnight especially with the damage that took decades to do.

That's it for tonight. Sweet dreams...

Julia

AFTERNOON EVERY BUDDY!!

It's still sunny over here, but the winds have not let up...very hot winds off the gulf...

MONET....I LOVE PITYPAT'S PORCH!!!! I put it right up there with THE COACH AND SIX...is that still open? Hope y'all have a wonderful day and evening!

SUSAN & MISSY...I sent y'all cards, but I'll say it again HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOTH OF YOU!!!!http://pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys.../Birthday1.gifhttp://pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys...3/BALLOONS.GIF

I'm off....had to take TIPPY to the vet this morning for her heartworm shot which I found out last night had been recalled due to vet's giving too much at a time. My vet said he had not had any problems and if anything were going to happen, it would have been with the first one she had six months ago.

Went to TJMAXX to pick up some perfume....while rolling around with Tippy in the basket, I picked up the perfume, found some ORANGE bedroom slippers
(easy spirit) at $10 off so I got two...one to put up...orange is hard to find!
8 WATERFORD CRYSTLE ice tea glasses for my cousin's wedding present. They had been $49.99 for each 4 pack box and I got them for $22 each!!!
Not bad huh! That was just TJMAXX price, so I can't even start to imagine
what they are in the stores! On my way out, I stopped at a mark down bin and found my perfume in there....one had not lid (I can use the one I have)
and one not opened at all! Both marked down $10!!!
Needless to say...a good day at TJMAXX!!!

I'll check in later!!

BOB

Ellen 09-04-2004 12:44 PM

Change of plans...after talking it over, we are not going to PittyPat's Porch. The recent reviews have not been good...poor service, overpriced food, etc. Instead, we are going to go to Yakitori House, which has a traditional tea room you can request. They have low tables, mats to sit on, and you can't wear shoes. That appeals to Tom...he hates wearing shoes. The food is Japanese, and really good. I think we will enjoy dinner there much better. The atmosphere is quiet and totally unhurried. Oh, and to accomodate their American customers, there are holes under the tables so you can sit on the floor, but can put your feet down into the hole and not have to sit on your knees as the Japanese do. Its fun...

So far, its been a slow day. I need to go do some drawing, then go to the store. Ruth received her transfer orders, she is starting at the new store next Saturday, so they are in a hurry to get moved this next week. I sure am going to miss her!

Off to draw...
