Default The GI Diet

Finally getting on this project I've been talking about for a few weeks now and decided to start with one of the first books I ever read on the GI/GL subject -- The GI Diet, by Rick Gallop. It was written in 2002 and probably first caught my eye, because the author is a Canadian.

Gallop divides his plan into two phases with Phase One being the Weight Loss phase and Phase Two being Manintenance. Although he doesn't go into great detail about laying out specifc meal plans he does make lots of suggestions that will help you put together your own meals easily and even includes a few recipes (the newer edition from 2004 includes more recipes).

The book doesn't really provide any GI numbers, but lays out foods in a Red Light (Stop, these are not recommended for regular consumption -- includes both high GI foods and high fat foods) / Yellow Light (use Caution and limit portion sizes) / Green Light (GO, GO, GO -- including low GI whole grains and most fruits and vegetables) kind of format -- making this a pretty easy plan to follow, especially for those who do not like (or need) to keep detailed written records.

The author has included brief sections outling recommended supplements and exercise routines, but these are not a main ingredient in the book.

Both the book and the plan have had an amazing success both in Canada and elsewhere and there are now quite a few more titles in the series. He also writes an on-line newsletter (free) to which you can subscribe through the website.

Personally, it wasn't detailed enough for me -- I'm a diabetic and need to track my nutrients (especially carbs) pretty closely. I'm a math nerd, too, so I like to track stuff -- but the science and the basic guidelines seem very good.

If you are looking for the original book, this is what it looks like . . . http://www.amazon.ca/G-I-Diet-Green-...4863873&sr=8-1 . . . this is from the Amazon.ca site, but you will find it on Amazon.com too, of course.

If you've read the book (or others in the series), we'd like your input on it and, if you are following this plan, we would really love to hear details and have you think of this Forum as one of your regular hangouts around 3FC.

See you later . . .

Hey!
Yeah.. since feb I have been following the GI diet. I swear by it and I love it. It tells you how to do it as cheap as possible, as easily as possible and everything. I have the living the gi diet book and a gi shopping index book.

I highly recommend these books and I know they work, I lost 30 pounds following it!

If you want more details I can recommend another candian book for you with more scientific info for you..
