Horrible Trip to the dentist December 13, 2007

I have really “soft” teeth.. my mom claims its from all the antibiotics I was given growing up lol. I also have always been a sugar addict. Anyway I had a dentist apt. 2 months ago and they found 2 cavities (these are number 16 and 17) that im getting filled in Feb. This is frustrating for me because I brush at least twice a day, floss, and use fluoride rinse. The past 3 weeks I felt like something was stuck in between my two back teeth and it was really irritating me so I went in yesterday… and guess what, ANOTHER cavity, apart from the 2 they just found! :\ Well I had it filled right there.. I needed 4 shots of novicaine and I still had some sort of panic attack for the first time ever.. I started shaking like crazy and my eyes started watering.. I felt so dumb… crying at the dentist as a 22 year old.. lol.. I was afraid I would see some little kid and scare them away from the dentist forever lol. :\ thats why I usually get the laughing gas, PLUS 3-7 shots of Novocaine (They never hit my nerve right or something!).. to calm me down because my teeth are so sensitive. Well I guess that was kind of the last straw for me.. I really need to cut out sugar. Not just to lose weight but for my teeth’s sake! I know I will “lose my taste” for sugar after a while.. but I need something to hold me over until that happens
Aside from my horrible trips to the dentist I really need to lose weight. My only problem is I CAN NOT do very low carb diets. My body goes HAYWIRE when I do (all of a sudden TOM lasts 3 out of 4 weeks a month, and other digestive issues ). But I also really need to eliminate the sugar. Another problem is fitday - they dont even give you the option of the amount of sugar! What do you all use to keep track? How many grams of sugar from fruit and other good stuff is acceptable? Any tips would be appreciated

Hi PinK! Sugarbusters is probably a very good plan for you. It is NOT low carb, but good carbs. Have you read the book? It will help some. Ask away on the support thread too, as most of us check in there daily and will be more than happy to give advice and suggestions. If you read the labels on stuff, you want to find things with less than 3 grams of sugar per serving. Also, look that there is no ADDED sugar. A tomato sauce for instance, may have more than 3 grams per serving, but the sugar grams come from the fructose in the tomatoes and it is ok. Just read to make sure they have not ADDED something, like high fructose corn syrup, or dextrose, etc. Include lots of veggies and fruits. And when you eat starchy carb foods, only use 100% whole grains. You can have 100% whole wheat, brown rice, sweet potatoes. But NO corn, white potatoes, white rice, white flour, white sugar, pineapple or bananas. They are all high glycemic. The diet is based on the glycemic index and there is a lot of good info on the Glycemic Index of foods on line. Mendoza's site has a chart of the GI of foods. I am sure getting off sugar and watching your diet will help your teeth. Make sure you get plenty of calcium too. Low fat dairy products are fine for Sugarbusters, so make sure you include them in your menus! Come on over to the support thread and join it! We are happy to have you! (I chose this color just for you! )
