Good Afternoon Everybuddy

I hope everyone is off having a good weekend. I'm just back from playing a few games of badminton. We're having some good warm weather but the forecast is for thunder showers this evening. Hope they are wrong as I am going downtown with a friend later this evening to see if we can see the concert they are having for the opening of the new wing of the Ontario Museum which is an outside event.

BOB - Glad to hear you are still enjoying your job. I'm sure it won't take you long to get a hang of the new duties that you have.

Ellen 06-02-2007 05:31 PM

Hello everyone! Sorry I have been MIA. I got a hankering to read a book, so I finally pulled the last Harry Potter book off the shelf and read it. Now I only have to wait 6 weeks for the next one, instead of over a year! I stayed up until 3am reading, then woke up this morning and started in on it again. I only took a break to go to Costco with Laura. :)

Not much else is going on around here. We are going to a good bye party for a young couple we know that is moving to Korea to teach English. I would rather stay home, but Tom is keen to go.....

BOB: It is overcast here, but no rain yet...I sure hope it gets up here, but it would be great if it dumped some on south Georgia....the farmers there are really hurting!

ROSALIE: We'll take that rain if you don't want it! :) I hope you get to enjoy the concert!

Ellen 06-04-2007 08:04 AM

Good Morning! Its a brand new week...and MMM!!

I am down 2 pounds this week.

I am about to suit up and head off o the gym for water aerobics. I hope everyone is doing super!

CountryMom4Him 06-04-2007 02:03 PM

Howdy

I've been such a bad girl. :) But I'm holding steady so I'm really happy about that. I'm actually down about one or two from last week.

Sat. we went and picked blueberries. The kids just love to do this. We usually only do it once a year but we might go back next weekend. I put up 10 little jars of blueberry jam. I had to give it a taste...yum yum. :) The rest went in the freezer for muffins, smoothies ect.

((Everybody)) I hope ya'll are having a GREAT Monday. Remember each of you is AWESOME and the very BEST you there is.

Love and hugs,
Crystle

Ellen 06-04-2007 10:58 PM

Hey everyone! I got about 90 minutes of water aerobics in today. I also finished two canisters, a small lidded jar, a bowl and two utensil crocks- one of which will probably be a replacement for the one I have been promising someone I will mail out ... :s:

I hope everyone is doing well. If you all are lurking, please post. It is kind of sad it is so slow in here.

Good night! Sweet dreams.

Hi Ladies

Back from a great time in Chicago. I bet we walked over 20 miles a day. Saturday, we left the hotel at (9:00 am and got back at 1:00 am. Other then the 1 hr ride to and from the hotel and a couple short bus rides, we were walking the whole time. Didn't eat or drink a lot, but the scale was still up 6 lbs yesterday. 3 was gone this morning.

Home for 4 weeks and I am glad. All this running around gets to me.
Don't know if I told you, but Wed before we left our A/C went out, 3 hrs later, our dryer died and 3 hrs later, we couldn't get our garage door up. Very frustrating day. Hopefully the /ac will be fixed today (getting a brand new one and furnace) and getting the new front loading washer/dryers today too. Garage door started working on its own.

Monet, congrats on your loss. You are going in the right direction.

Bob, glad you are still liking your job.

Country, why is it when we are good, the scale doesn't move but when we are bad we lose? Take it anyway. Good job. Use it as motivation to stay on track.

Rosalie, did you get to see the concert?

Well got to run. It is crazy here. My DD who is off for the summer, is coming in to help out some. That should help. Have a great day.

Good morning

I got the neatest surprise yesterday when I went to check the pumpkin. I have two patty pan squash that are also growing in the compost pile, that I knew. But what I didn't kow was I had a HUGE pappy pan. It weighted over a pound when I weighted it. :) I pulled the other little one hoping it would make again. My yellow squash and zuchini didn't set this year so it was nice to find the other.

Welcome back Solly. I'm so glad to hear that you had a good time. Sorry to hear about all your electircal stuff going kaput. ((hugzz))

((Everybody))

Love and hugs,
Crystle

Rosalie 06-05-2007 10:44 AM

Good Morning all

It's a dull, wet morning here so won't be going out walking to-day. Yesterday I found a new place to walk. There is a wooded area with trails close to where I am living and that's where I walked yesterday. I try to get out for a walk most days - if I miss going in the morning then I will go after dinner.

I didn't get to see the concert on Saturday. The area was very crowded. We probably could have got in to the stands which were set up in the road but it would have been a long wait until the concert started and would have been a problem if we needed potty so decided not to stay. Instead we took the subway down to the harbourfront. That's a nice area just to browse around and to sit around sipping a beer or a glass of wine.

Solly - Glad to hear you had a good time in Chicago. That was a lot of walking you did. Maybe those extra pounds are water weight. Hope they are gone soon. Sorry to hear about your appliance woes but I am sure you will enjoy your new front loading washer and dryer. I bought new ones last year when I moved into my condo. The ones here were working but very old so decided to treat myself to new ones. Hope you don't mind me offering a word of advice - keep the door of the washer open a little after use and wipe inside the rubber where water can collect. Apparently if you don't do this it can get musty. I got this advice from my dil when I bought mine.

Monet - WTG on the 2 pounds gone.

Country - What the heck is a pappy pan? Your blueberry jam sounds yummy.

Ellen 06-05-2007 12:10 PM

Hey everyone! I slept poorly last night, and finally gave up this morning and took a nap. I feel better now after an hour and a half nap! :o

I need to go to the store and get essentials, like luncheon meat, bread and bananas, so will make this short.

COUNTRY: What a nice surprise! I have two volunteer squash growing near the compost pile, and I am going to be interested to see what they are!

ROSALIE: How nice to have some walking trails nearby! Nice scenery makes it easier to walk, I think! I am finding my waterproof MP3 player is very helpful to my water aerobics! I am the type that NEEDS these little trick things to exercise!

SOLLY: Chicago is a neat place to visit isn't it? I grew up there, and used to love wandering around when I was in high school. The public transportaion is excellent, so you could get anywhere you wanted to go by train or bus. What all did you see? Did you get to any of the museums downtown?

We have a lot of folks missing... SEF, TECH, ERICSMOMMY, MELF, and some oldies, like HEART, PANCHO, GATOR, TALITHA, that it would be nice to hear from.....

CountryMom4Him 06-05-2007 07:03 PM

Howdy again

Rosalie...sorry about the typo. I don't know what my fingers are doing sometimes. Patty Pan are a white squash with scallopted edges. It is very similiar to your other summer squashes.

Monet...cool beans. I can't wait to see what you end up with. :0

It is HOT. I should be working or walking or something but I'm so not motivated. Hope ya'll are having a GREAT day.

Love and hugs,
Crystle

Ellen 06-05-2007 08:48 PM

I got in 45 minutes of water aerobics this afternoon. It felt pretty good!

Dinner tonight was good...I made Lion's Head which is a Chinese style meat ball with nappa cabbage steamed with it. That and brown basmati rice completed the meal.

I am feeling rather sore tonight. I guess from the class yesterday. We did a lot of twists and bouncing. It sure is fun, the time just flies!

Rosalie 06-06-2007 10:35 AM

Good Morning all

I went to bed early last night but woke up almost every hour but still ended up sleeping to almost 7.30. So I didn't get out for my early morning walk, instead decided to get out the vacuum cleaner. It was certainly time - I had been putting it off for a while. I just hate vacuuming the carpet I have. It was so much easier when I had hardwood and some rugs - then I could just zoom around in no time.

CountryMom - I hope you didn't think I was being facetious. I didn't realize it was a typo. I didn't know what a patty pan was either. Anyway thanks for the explanation.:)

Monet - It's about time I went swimming again. I used to go to the local indoor pool frequently but it's been a while since I went. I like to exercise while I am in the water although I have only once been to an aquafit class. There is an outdoor pool in the condo complex but it's not open yet. Hope they get it open soon.

Ellen 06-06-2007 11:27 AM

Back from Water Aerobics. Breakfast was espresso, a protein bar, a bowl of Cheerios, and I had a protein shake before class.

My replacement potter's wheel was here on the porch when I got home, so I need to go pack up the broken one to send back.

I will check in later!

ROSALIE: I  water aerobics! It is so easy and fun! I highly recommend it. You don't have to have a class to benefit from it either. I just do the same stuff in my pool alone whenever I get the chance and I can tell I am getting stronger and losing some.

Melf 06-06-2007 09:57 PM

Hello, sorry I have not been posting. I'm hanging in there. It's been a rough few weeks with DS's husband in ICU but things are slowly getting better. After 3 weeks, he's finally off the vent but still soooo weak. It will be a long recovery but at least he's moving forward. So of course things like that stress the whole family but I am doing the best I can.

Exercise has slipped. Scale is still heading in the right direction with occasional slip ups. Last week I was so close to falling below 180 that I even saw 179.8 briefly a couple of times but then back up to 182. Some days I feel so swollen that I know it's a fluid problem. I can't even budge my ring off my finger. It lasts for a few days then slowly resolves & then I see the scale going back down. I have looked back at my weight commander program & looks like I do this about every 2 weeks for a short time.

We're fixing to leave for vacation at the end of the week & I had set my goal to be below the 180 mark. I finally made it this am. I made it!!! :woohoo: 179.6 Now I need to keep down but it feels good to see my goal accomplished! My clothes are feeling looser every day & really starting to show that I have lost these 16 lbs since Feb.

Justwant2Bhealthy 06-06-2007 10:40 PM

HELLO EVERYONE ~ ~ What is the Sugarbusters plan like? Do I have to buy a book for the info? My doctor put me on Metformin when my sugars got a little too high; but now they are staying in the normal range. I have just been doing my own thing with watching my carbs (eating whole grains), lean meat, lower fat, lower sugar, etc.

I'm trying for balance, moderation, and normality; if there is such a thing? Well, at least I'm hoping. I have been popping in now and then to look for ideas. I noticed that you could use some company on this thread.

You'll notice right away that I'm the type of person who looks for the positive in everything (or at least I try to). My Christian faith is important to me, but I love talking about gardening, food, recipes, family, books, and life issues too. My hobbies are writing poems and songs; and learning to play the piano just for fun, as well as gardening and I like to read books now and then too.

I have always loved to swim; we have a brand new complex here, but our swimming pool isn't quite finished yet. I would love to do water aquatics (I know they are planning some classes when it opens). Now, what do I do about covering up this body; maybe tight black stretchy capris over a suit or with a tank ... hmmm? Don't want to shock anyone ~ LOL! I'm jesting ~ sorta!!!

ANYWAYS ~ I'd better not ramble on too much; better leave some room for the others. I have some free time as I'm a retiree; my career now is my home; cooking, housework, laundry, the finances, etc. We have two little furry babies that we adore; getting older now (14 y/o & 12), but still in great health; one is cockapoo and one is terrier; and cute as can be!!!

WELL, take care all; and I'll be back again soon ~ ROSEBUD.

Ellen 06-07-2007 06:58 AM

ROSEBUD: :welcome3: The sugarbusters plan is probably pretty close to what you are doing. It is a very simple, easy to follow plan. Mainly, you avoid the whites-white flour, potatoes, rice, bread, sugar...and replace them with whole grains like whole wheat. Corn is NOT allowed, either by the way. Other foods to avoid include high glycemic fruits and veggies like bananas, pineapples and watermelon. You also watch your fat intake, concentrating on lean protein sources, and using low fat dairy products whenever possible. I recommend you read the book. Check your library for it. Oh, and ramble away. This IS a chatty group usually. Some members disappear for a while, then pop back in again. Summer is usually the slowest time. :) We are glad to have you join us, especially since, as you observed, it HAS been slow lately, and I hate talking to myself! I am a diabetic, and I find following the Sugarbusters plan is very helpful in managing my blood glucose levels. A few tips include not having more than two to three starchy carbs (whole wheat bread, sweet potato, brown rice, etc.) a day, making sure you drink plenty of water, and of course, getting about 30 minutes of exercise a day.

If you have any questions, please ask away!

Melf 06-07-2007 09:52 AM

ROSEBUD, :welcome: Sounds like you're well on your way to achieving your goal & that you've got the jest of SB! Go to your library & check out the book then you'll know if it's one you want to invest in. eBay usually has soon pretty cheap also. It's well worth the read & yes it does work!

CountryMom4Him 06-07-2007 12:16 PM

Howdy

Good almost afternoon. :) I've been eating poorly the last couple of days but I'm trying really hard to refocus.

WTG Melf!!! It feels so great to meet a goal.

Welcome Rosebud. I think Sugar Busters is one of the very best ways to eat even though I've had a rough year. I've been eating this way for five years. The first four I was doing wayyyyyy better. :) There are so many yummy recipes that you can make with out sugar. Even my family will eat sweets made with Agave syrup. They don't follow my way of eating. But I make many things that are healthier for them and they don't even know.. :) I love your signature. When I first started walking I used to say that verse the whole time I was trying to make it back home. There were many days I wouldn't have made it without God. I was SOOOO out of shape.

Rosalie...not at all. I didn't know what they were either until about 2 or three years ago when they were selling them at a road side veggie stand. I tried growing them last year but they didn't do well. We had one for dinner last night...yummmyyyyy :) It did explode a little..I need to put more holes in it next time..haha

((Everybody))

Love and hugs,
Crystle

ThinWithin225 06-07-2007 08:44 PM

Hello everyone! I've been doing well and out to walk three days this week. YES! We are leaving early in the morning for a weekend of camping on the lake! See ya on Monday!!

Ellen 06-07-2007 10:09 PM

Whew...what a day. I had dim sum with my neighbor and her daughter for brunch. Then we went shopping at the Dollar Tree, and Wal Mart. I got a new bathing suit. When I got home, Justin left to go pick up his parents from the airport. His uncle died and the funeral will be here. We ended up going out to dinner tonight at an Italian place to celebrate Laura's birthday, which is next week. They left after putting the baby to bed to take his parents up to North Georgia to his other uncle and aunt's. That aunt is the one I do pottery with.... I got in the pool tonight for about 30 minutes of water aerobics.

Off to get ready for bed! Night all!

Justwant2Bhealthy 06-09-2007 01:05 AM

HI EVERYONE ~ THANX so much for the nice welcome; I've been lurking for awhile and I already know MONET AND MO from the Dieting with Obstacles thread. MO had mentioned this thread to me, as she knew I have to watch my sugar intake. My doctor is trying to prevent full-fledged Diabetes by catching things early; so far so good.

We have a few people with diabetes in my family; so it's good to watch now. The Sugarbuster's Program sounds similar to what I was doing; but it is just a bit stricter. RATS ~ I just love corn; sometimes I have that instead of potatoes or rice for dinner. Now what do I do? I try to spread those carbs out over the day; but my plan allows 5-7 a day.

My plan says not to go under 4 carbs a day for balanced health. How do you find your sugars when you eat so few carbs? Years ago, I could have gotten away with that; but not now. I end up feeling very hungry if I miss meals now or eat too little. We think that's the Metformin doing that. I have to be careful of low sugar too, which I'm sure others do as well.

You know, I don't eat a lot of sugar anymore; we only have dessert once a week like Vanilla Ice Cream or Skim Milk Chocolate Pudding. My biggest problem was probably the carbs over all; now I measure my pasta, rice, and try to eat new potatoes mostly.

BUT, I think I will have to cut them a bit more to lose more weight as I have been a little stalled lately; I'm sure that's what the problem is. That is one reason I have been coming here so much.

My biggest problem is turning to carb comfort foods when I'm stressed or anxious; have to work really hard on that one. I am trying to keep busy too; like today, we spent a lot of time finishing up our garden ~ transplanting our tomato plants and seeding the yellow & green beans.

WELL, that gave me lots of exercise for today; I'm trying to meet a goal of 775 exercise minutes for June. So far I'm doing well with walking, hand-weights, gardening, chair aerobics, and I hope to add swimming soon.

ANYWAYS, it's getting really late, so I better go hit the sack or I'll be too exhausted tomorrow. Take care everyone ~ ROSEBUD.

Ellen 06-09-2007 10:16 AM

ROSEBUD: I know the three starchy carbs a day sounds strict...but Sugarbusters is really not a low carb plan! It is a smart carb plan! :) You can eat fruit, and veggies so you don't have to go hungry. Corn is high glycemic food...just last night I cheated a bit and had some popcorn. Two hours later, my blood glucose level was pretty bad! :o No more popcorn for me for a while! I should have had some fruit, or some veggies and dip. I was stress eating and I knew it. Way to go on the exercising! That is so important! I was amazed when I was first diagnosed with Diabetes at how much just walking (strolling if you please) lowered my blood sugar levels. Even just bouncing on a Pilates ball will lower my levels! Speaking of exercise...I am sitting here in my bathing suit, ready to go out and do some water aerobics! Better get off here and get about it! :) Have a great day!

CountryMom4Him 06-09-2007 11:35 PM

Good evening

I haven't been following SB like I should but I'm trying to show restraint in what I'm eating until I'm doing better. Since I've been too lazy to get any real exercise I've started mowing again. It really seems to do the trick.

I hope ya'll are having a FANTASTIC weekend and if not I pray it gets better.

Love and hugs,
Crystle

Ellen 06-10-2007 09:57 AM

Hello everyone! I slept poorly...had a lot of dreams. I have been following the story of a little seven year old girl with Ewing's sarcoma for a while. She was diagnosed at the age of 2, and she died Friday morning. Most of my dreams were about her. It was weird. She was very vocal about all the angels that were hanging out in their house this past week. She described them as beautiful and they were talking to her a lot. The rest of the family of course could not see them. It just amazes me to think God sent angels to spend time with her and let her get to know them before it was time to take her with them so she would not be afraid. How cool is that?

I feel like I am in limbo on the funeral stuff. I still have not heard if there is any definite arrangements made. I am planning the dinner, and will make it rather informal and easy...ham, turkey, potato salad and a big tossed salad.

Dietwise, I am doing ok, but my weight popped up two pounds after going out to dinner Thursday, and it is not going back down fast enough to suit me!

I hope everyone is doing well.

Ellen 06-11-2007 07:44 AM

MMM- Unfortunately, I was up one and a half. Kind of frustrating....

The funeral is today, so I am heading up to north Georgia a bit later this morning to get everything fixed for the dinner this evening. I am just making sandwich trays and salads, so it will not be too hard. I was going to bake a cake, but then decided to just pie a big apple pie at Costco and make a nice fruit salad in a watermelon. Sounds good to me for a summer supper....

I hope everyone is doing well. Miss chatting with you all....where ever you are. :(

ThinWithin225 06-11-2007 08:10 AM

We're back! and we had a great time! The weather was good for camping. breezy and cool enough to sleep at night!

Rachel goes back to dance this week for nine hours a week! There's her exercise! and Sean is in the new driver education classes this week. So mom is back on the road again almost like during the school year!

we have the best chance for rain today that we have had for a while. I heard over the weekend that people have been holding prayer days for rain. Maybe it will come true today!

Have a great day!

Ellen 06-12-2007 07:30 AM

Morning! Everything went well yesterday. I fixed the after the funeral dinner for the family while they were off, and took care of Kaeleb. He WAS napping until the UPS man delivered a package and their three dogs went nuts. Poor Kaeleb woke up screaming....

We got in late last night, and I just about went straight to bed. I sure was tired! I slept fairly well too.

It looks overcast today...GOOD! We got some rain yesterday, but we need a lot more. I will get a good water aerobic session in sometime today.

Have a great day everyone!

BOB: Good to see you! I had wondered where you were! You will get the hang of that job soon I am sure!

Rosalie 06-12-2007 09:42 AM

Good Morning everyone

It's a beautiful sunny day here, not too hot. I went for my walk yesterday morning. Woke up a bit late this morning so didn't go but will be going out to the shops soon so that will be exercise. I need to buy a couple of things to take on holiday at the end of the month. This evening I will be going to play badminton.

Monet - Glad everything went well for you yesterday. Too bad about the dogs waking Kaeleb. That was so sad about the little girl dying from cancer but sweet that she saw the angels waiting for her.

Rosebud - :welcome2:. Glad you have joined us. This is not a low carb plan but you need to choose carbs with a low to moderate gi. Starchy carbs like bread, rice and pasta should be limited to two or three servings a day. Beans and lentils are good. Because most of them are low to moderate gi they raise your blood sugar much more slowly than most of the starchy carbs so keep you satieted longer. Have you been able to get the book? It is a good idea to read it to get an idea of the theory behind this plan. If you would like to read more about the glycemic index check here
If you follow the links they have a database where you can input a food item and see the gi of that food. They also have lists of foods that have been recently tested including some from Canada.

BOB - Don't get too stressed out at work. It'll all fall into place soon I am sure. Just come on here when you are feeling stressed to take your mind off work for a while.

Have a good day everyone.

CountryMom4Him 06-12-2007 10:12 AM

Good morning

So far so good...half a cup of coffee. :) We could use some rain Monet. My poor pumpkin patch is really starting to wilt. I hope it makes it long enough for the few pumpkins on the vine to ripen. The kids are getting such a kick out of watching them grow.

Bob...hey, thanks for the shove this morning. I wish you were here when I walk into the kitchen. That is when the problem starts. :) You'll have all that surgery stuff down in no time now that you've had a chance to start learning it.

Rosalie...We can trade weather if you like...it is HOT here, the mid 90's yesterday. ((hugzz))

We are heading out in a bit so I guess I'd better get. I hope ya'll have a GREAT day today.

Love and hugs,
Crystle

I'm not lost.

I have been slammed at work this week. It is just crazy and I have not had any time to post. Right now I am missing lunch and waiting for them to give me a bid to type. It gets nuts. Seems like home is no better. We are running somewhere every night it seems.

No time for posts, but wanted to Welcome Rosebud, this is a great group. and Rosalie, thanks for the tip on the washer. I noticed water clinging to it.

Hope to check back soon. I miss everyone.

CountryMom - I just had a smile while reading your post to BOB. I'm reading 'you will get all that SUGARY stuff down soon' then I backtracked and realised it said SURGERY STUFF.

AFTERNOON EVERY BUDDY!!!

I'm home this afternoon due to a death of a former Doc's Mom. The current Doc's went to the service so there you have have it!

I know that I will get the hang of this, it's just going to take time. I'm just and old fart and it takes longer to catch on.

We're supposed to get a rain storm this afternoon, and I hope to GAWD that we do...

ROSALIE...I've really not felt and stress...that's the good thing...but yes, I know, I can come here and vent, and believe me....I WILL!!!

MONET...How was your trip up north? Did you get anything done? I haven't been around because when I get home in the afternoon, my brain has had it...I wouldn't have been responsible for anything that I put on here!

CRYSTLE....Honey, If I were closer, we would knock this thing out in a heart beat! With your garden coming in, you'll be able to have all the fresh veggies your want...just add protein. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

JACKIE...I thought you and DH had gone an another trip...

MO...Are you going to have a BIRTHDAY PARTY for ERIC????

OK...I'm doing busy work, and I'll check in a little later...in the meantime....BEHAVE!!!!

Justin's parents leave for home in Vermont at 6 am. His brother, (my studiomate's husband) drove them down here a little while ago, and they are out having dinner with some friends along with Justin and Kaeleb. It is quiet in the house. I am enjoying the peace and quiet!

I got my 45 minutes of water aerobics in. I need to add a walk in there a few days a week. I am just dragging my feet on that, though I know I should do it.

Today is Laura's 21st birthday! Man, where did the time go? She and Justin are planning on going out to an Irish Pub to celebrate later tonight. I am guessing they are planning on me babysitting, though no one asked.....

I am doing ok foodwise today, but I have a taste for something crunchy and salty and there is nothing in the house like that I can have. :(

BOB: Behave HOW? good, bad? :s:

Hi Guys and Good Morning

Yes Bob we are having a jungle gym party, it's only for kids 6and under and it has climbing things and slides and stuff then we go into a party room there and eat food and cake, open gifts and then they go home, We have invited 6little autistic boys from his class and there parents. So it should be interesting.

Today I am going to curves to get weight and measured, l am excited and scared but l think l have lossed so it should be ok.

Does anybody have any tattoo's? I am thinking of getting one and wondered if there is a less painfull place on the body to get it. I am thinking either my ankle or over my heart area, my tattoo is the autism ribbon with Eric's name under it. Thanks in advance for any replys.

Well l am off to take Eric to school and then workout, so have a great day all.
