Default Surprising Realization

I re-joined my health club (Lifestyles) a couple of weeks ago, knowing that the added investment in money and time would give me incentive to make this butt of mine start moving. When I was at work today, I debated on whether or not to go tonight -- I was feeling a little bit lazy, and hemmed and hawed a bit when I got home, made dinner, etc.

Around 7pm I convinced myself to go, and at least ride the recumbent bike for 30 minutes. I set it for 40 just to see if I could make it that long without whimpering, and about 15 minutes into it, I realized that I was actually enjoying myself...for me, that's a breakthrough! I did the full 40, plus a round of the toning/weight machines (arm stuff, leg stuff, back stuff, chest stuff, most at very low weights but I'm just starting out). I skipped the crunch mat because it was crowded, but will do them tomorrow for sure.

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd actually not only enjoy going to the gym, but look forward to going back throughout the week.

By the way,I know a lot of people say to get your exercise done in the morning (so it's out of the way and in order to get your body burning throughout the day) but I find that going in the evening works better for me -- gets me out of the house, relaxes me after work, and makes for better sleep. But your mileage may vary. I'm just happy I'm enjoying going!

Excellent !!

Isn't that the BEST feeling in the world?!? LOL...I wish I had it more often myself, especially when doing cardio! Weights, I could do for hours....but cardio...well, every 2 weeks or so I find myself enjoying it. I wish it was more often.

Congrats!!

Congratulations

Morning, night, whatever. Exercise works best when you can do it and enjoy doing it!

Kate- Do you have good music or have you tried books on CD for cardio? my dh just gave me a teeeeeny mp3 player and alternating between that an downloadable books has made a world of difference in cardioland. (Tho I'd still rather lift.)

Hi Mel,

I listen to music on the elliptical (Robbie Williams Live From Knebworth -- he's big in Britain if you've never heard of him ). And weirdly, it's the only CD that seems to work for me. I've tried other CDs but for some reason Robbie's my main exercise man . I've been thinking of burning a special exercise CD but (sadly) my laptop...ah...doesn't have that capability. Yeah, I know. Time for a new computer .

My trainer says I'm more of an anaerobic person vs. aerobic, which is why I enjoy short, tough spurts more than the long-haul stuff. I know she knows her stuff, so I believe her...BUT...I also suspect that because for YEARS any time I was huffing/puffing/sweating it was because I couldn't keep up with other folks on a walk/hike/stairs/whatever that I now have some kind of subconscious aversion to aerobic exercise. My brain thinks "breathing heavy for long periods of time" = "not good enough to keep up" or something...Example: my parents used to make me go hiking with them and then they never bothered to adjusted their pace to fit mine -- and I'm talking when I was 5 - 6 years old -- so "moving quickly" when I was a kid was closely linked to a sense of failure (LOL, and fear of abandonment due to the dreaded but oft used phrase: "sit right here and we'll come back for you later"). I don't know, maybe I'm trying to make a connection that doesn't actually work .

Sorry for going so off topic on your thread, Ry73!! I tend to do that...sorry

LovesBassets - Robbie Williams - big in Britain! It's amazing that he hasn't broken the states. There's not one person over here who doesn't know who he is!! I saw him the other day at BBC studios about to film Top Of The Pops. He's a cheeky chappy! Much smaller in real life too!

Ry73 - congrats that you're enjoying the gym! I've come to the realisation that I love my kickboxing more and more every week! I just wish it was the same for lacrosse!

I joined 3FC because I hated exercise. I typed in Fat Chicks and Excercise into google, and here I am!!!! I now I go to the gym 6 days a week, I swim two or more times a week, exercise is MY time, and I love it. I never would have thought I would be weight training, swimming and doing cardio, and am now considered one of the "oldies" at the gym, and used as an example for fellow fat people!!!!

You'll love Robbie's new single "Trippin" I didn't like it when I first heard it, but it's a good exercise one!!! He's big in Australia as well, it's a bit sad he hasn't made it in the states!

LOL 2frustrated...I can't believe Robbie's not HUGE over here, either! He sings "Under the Sea" during the closing credits of Finding Nemo, but that's about all the U.S. exposure he's had. It's very weird.

I love him!

Isn't he the one that did "Millenium" as well? It wasn't a huge hit over here but some people would at least recognize it. {sorry for the thread hijack}

I think he's lucky that he's not HUGE in the states, so he can live there and not get mobbed! Otherwise he'd be living at the North Pole or somewhere!
