So, over the past 5.5 years I have lost 95 lbs. Did it slowly, carefully, ate right, exercised my butt off (Jazzercise), weight training (also a Jazzercise class). I still exercise (cardio work, regular and step aerobics) about 6x per week, and weight train 2x per week.

My question for all of you who have lost weight and maintained the loss successfully -- do you ever stop obsessing about the possiblility of regaining any of it? The lowest I got to was 139 (I am 5'9"), and then I quit "trying", due to the fact that my weight was low enough, my body fat was/is around 17%... and people (most specifically my fantastic instructor) were telling me that it was time to stop the "loss" process and work on maintenance.

Well anyhow. That was nearly 4 months ago, and in those 4 months I have gained back about 4 lbs. I know, not a whole LOT of weight, but I can't help but thinking, "4 lbs in 4 months! I can't go around gaining a pound per month!". Scares the heck out of me. So I'm back on that weight loss thing, kicking up the cardio workouts and adding more weight training in again.

I know that I probably have gained more muscle lately, as I have increased the amount of weight that I use (9 lb hand held weights and 8 lb wrap around leg weights) - and my clothing size has remained constant. Am I just an obsessive freak or what??? I know the probability that I will gain too much weight back is low, since I am so VERY AWARE of it -- but honestly, sometimes I get so sick of thinking about it, but then again, I can't seem to quit!!

So any advice would be more than welcomed.

You have obviously made some serious lifestyle changes that got you where you are--it wasn't just a fad diet or something like that. I know it's easier said than done, but obsessing about the potential for gain will drive you to drink! Monitor yourself monthly, instead of daily/weekly. If you see a huge gain (+5 lbs a month or more) evalaute if you are reverting back to old habits.

I've lost about 50 pounds, and haven't gained any back because I live differently now. The only way I can gain it all back is if I eat dramatically differently and don't exercise. I too am taking this journey slowly, modifying things slowly, so they will be with me forever.

You have accomplished something great, but you need to enjoy the benefits of your hard work. You will not gain it back if you are following your same plan.

Great job and I hope all goes well for you..

Default Shauna - good for you!

First off - a heartfelt CONGRATS! to you for taking the weight off! That was a lot of work!

I don't think you're obsessive at all. Even after losing the weight, keeping it off requires diligence. I do think it's a good idea to weigh yourself periodically, and continue to watch what you eat. You'll be able to get a handle on how many calories you can have daily by keeping an informal food journal for awhile - and if/when you slip up, keeping an occasional food journal is a good way to get back on track!

You might want to go to the library and pick up a copy of "Thin for Life" by Anne Fletcher. This book is terrific - the author interviewed over 100 'masters at weight loss' who have lost and kept off 20 pounds or more for at least three years. You should be able to get some good tips there.

Stay educated on the nutrition and exercise front. Actually Jazzercise is great at keeping up with the latest fitness news and innovations - do they still have their "No More Diet"?

Mix up your exercise. I remember how great it was to finally feel comfortable wearing shorts (although I still have flabby legs) and going outside! Do fun outdoor things with hubby and kids (if you have 'em). Bike riding - hiking - maybe if it doesn't break your budget spring for a new bike or horseback riding lessons!

Treat yourself - get a pedicure, a manicure, buy a great new workout outfit. I still get a charge out of going to the mall and trying on 'normal' sized clothes (I'm a size 8/10 and working on being a size 6/8 right now). Even 10 years after losing so much weight, I still enjoy it! Or how about a massage? Just do something that makes you feel special and beautiful!

One more thing - have a fantastic weekend!

Default What an accomplishment!

ShanaRad,

I am glad that I found your post here. I was in the support forum and was going to post there when I saw the recommendation to post it in the success forum. I think you should feel pretty good about someone telling you to put your story in the Success area. You've earned it.

I understand where you are coming from. I haven't had to try to lose weight, but I have had to try to make changes in my life. I finally reached a few successes, but still worried about slipping. I just wanted to feel good and forget about worrying!

You made it, and that is something that thousands are still trying to do. Perhaps you could put together a regular schedule or work outs and eating plans. Write them down, and when you need to work out, work out. But don't worry about it before or after. Just look at your schedule, and when it says exercise, exercise. When it doesn't, don't think twice about it. Let the paper and ink worry for you.

You're doing such a good job, and you'll be able to keep it that way.
