Phase 2 & Exercise

  • Providing I'm having a good stretch, I exercise on a regular basis (3 to 4 times a week). That being said, what are the least amount of Phase 2 foods I should be having? Sometimes I'll have 2 fruits, or a fruit and a grain, etc. I've been sort of nervous to go past 2 servings per day. I've read some posts in other forums about not eating enough fruit and/or grains having an adverse effect on weightloss if you exercise regularly.

I was stalled for almost a month and a half, and only recently has the scale started to budge again (my body just doesn't want to let go of the 170's). That's another reason I'm skeptical about adding anymore Phase 2 things.

I'll also confess while I'm here, that I'm a scale addict. Seriously, I step on it everytime I enter the lavatory - even if it's just to wash my hands! Not necessarily to see what damage my lunch may have done, or the after effects of my dinner.. it's a habbit. I don't let it get me down, or really effect my mood. But I can't help it! It's like a cigarette to a smoker... So I've hidden my scale and refuse to step on it for a month.
  • Hi Fire Fly:

I'm having the same problem, afraid to add new carbs also. So far I'm eatting 1 fruit & 1 grain per day on Phase 2.and it all depends on the carbs,Ican NEVER eat a POTATO again, someone elsle can't have PASTA.You have to experiment on what carbs you can eat without gaining.. I starting losing the beginning of last week, but now I'm stalling again. My Daughter told me to drink ICE water, its supposed to kick up the motabilism by burning energy to keep the water body temp up..You mentioned exercising 4 x a week. Remember muscle is heavier than fat. Go by the measuring tape rather than the scale. Hugs BB
  • I'm on week six and usually have one fruit serving and one grain serving per day. I am content with that and don't see why I should eat more of these type of foods if I don't have the desire to eat them. I'm losing well and exercise pretty much daily.
  • Well, I think your concern is justified, Firefly. Yes, you don't want to mess up your weightloss, but messing up your health is much more important, don't you think? Can you get a referral to a nutritionist from your doctor, Firefly? I was able to do that and meeting with her not only helped me have a better idea of what my body needs, but it also reassured me that what I'm doing with SBD is not unhealthy for me.

You can get a lot of the nutrients you get in fruits from vegetables, but you definitely need good fiber in your diet, and that can be somewhat hard to get without grains.

I have one starch and one fruit a day, but like Beach Bum says, every person is different. You should try different things and at the very least, vary what types of fruit and grains you use to ensure that you get a variety of nutrients. Sweet potatoes one day, WW bread the next, then quinoa the next day, etc. A different fruit each day. Does that help at all? I do think talking with a nutritionist will give you better information. You might also benefit from putting your daily foods into www.fitday.com and seeing if they tabulate vitamins and fiber.
