Default Intro and SB question: have I blown it?!

Hi all!

Looking forward to getting to know you all. I started SBD on Monday. It's been fun! I have tried great new recipes from the book as well. Today...I had a challenge: I was contracted out to work in a Dr.'s office for the first time. The doc comes in with a box of bagels and says, "I brought bagels in your honor! Come on and have one." OY! I felt I couldn't refuse. I did have a semi-victory as I only ate 1/2. I have been perfectly following the plan since Monday (and stuck to it after the evil bagel). Is this 1/2 bagel going to seriously derail me? Will it have a huge effect on resolving my insulin resistance which is the goal of Phase I?

Now...about me. I am 39 YO and work professionally in a medical field. I am currently working on my doctoral degree (can you say STRESS!!). About 4 years ago I lost 83 lbs. with WW. I do LOVE WW...but I just felt I needed a jump start lately after gaining back about 50 lbs (I lost 25 of it by following WW again). I have 25 lbs. to go to goal. I have never really subscribed to the Atkin's philosophy, but SBD's combination of lower fat and allowing the "good" carbs made sense to me. I really liked the info about the glycemic index in food and how that affects our blood sugar and cravings.

I am married (will soon be 11 years!!) with 7 cats and a dog. My hobbies include knitting and geocaching (ever heard of it!?!?)

Thanks for any light you can shed on my question/dilemma too!

BGG

Hey welcome to the beach! no 1/2 a bagel is not goin to shipwreck you. We all get caught in situations that we have to bend on. You did good by only eating half. I take it you are from Ky the bluegrass state. We lived there for about 8 yrs. when i was growin up. I was once a ww follower myself but I know for me i cannot count points the rest of my life. I love the beach.

Bamiegurl: Thanks for the encouragement! Actually, I don't live in the Bluegrass state now...but I was born there. My Mom lives there, that is where she is from. Are you familiar with Campbellsville? It's the middle of the state and if you blinked fast you'd miss it!

Hey BGG, I just started on Monday as well! I have done WW in the past and I really like their program a lot, my husband is doing it right now. I just have blood sugar problems so I am hoping SB will help with that and it has so far

What is your job if you dont mine? I am a mom and a full time student as well. I will be applying to Nursing school this month and am also considering medical school....but think I will wait until my girls are a little older (they are 2 and 5) before attempting that.

Welcome!!

Skinnymini

Hi skinnymini! I am an audiologist, which means I am a hearing specialist. I test hearing, fit hearing aids, consult in schools for hearing impaired students, etc. My husband is a nurse! (psych nursing is his area). Good for you for having such aspirations!!! Good luck!!

dont worry too much about the bagel, as there are times when (in my opinion) it seems more important to go with the flow of a social situation than to stick to predecided rules. But I would say watch out for the bagels, they are incredibly high GI.

Good luck.

Ellis,

Geocaching is a relatively new sport. You have to have a GPS (global positioning system) receiver. You use the GPS receiver to find "treasures" (waterproof tupperware/rubbermaine containers or old army ammo boxes that are filled with stuff...most are kid friendly things or cds, pens, other trinkets) that people around the world have hidden. You find them because they post the coordinates to a website. I used www.geocaching.com (go there for more info). You input the coordinates into your GPS receiver (I have a Garmin eTrex Legend...got it on Amazon.com) and off you go!! I have logged 94 finds since I started in September!! It's GREAT fun. I have seen extraordinary places that I would not have found had it not been for geocaching. And...it's great exercise to boot!!!

Edited to add: You take something from the box...then you put something in (a trade). Then you sign a log (notebook) that is in the cache.

Hi, Bluegrass!!!
And welcome to "the beach." Sounds like you're doing fine to me. You got yourself right vback on track after only 1/2 a bagel. That's awesome!

Hey, you guys....I know both those Kentucky towns.....Campbellsville and Crofton. Actually, we live in the state right next door! Small world. right??

I am also a WW at heart who has found that the eating principles of SBD make sense for a healthy lifestyle. I am a Lifetime WW since 2002, and found SBD last Sept. I love it, and am now trying to incorporate the two together. This forum is just wonderful for group support and information. The conversation gets very stimulating at times and keeps us all in stitches!

Welcome.....I think you'll love SBD.

Oh my gosh geocaching sounds so cool! I told my Dh about it and he loves it! He's a pirate at heart and is always talking about finding treasure! And since you do a trade the game never ends! We are going to start looking for a GSL!

You guys are just my type!! I tell so many of my RL (real life) friends about geocaching and I just get a blank stare!

Sharon: I agree that SBD & WW can be incorporated. I still find myself unconsciously counting my points. I think it helps me know if my portions are OOC. I found I was most successful at WW when I tried to "limit" my carbs (not erradicate them) and that is why I bought the SBD book.
