The old Phase I Thread is closed but look back at it for reference here.

This thread is for new and re-tread Beachers. Post you questions, menus, triumphs and slippages here so we can all learn from each other.

L.J. 02-15-2009 02:52 PM

I'm new..and have a questions and a comment.....day 1 today...are you only allowed 1 snack inbetween meals and then 1 after dinner?
That being said, I forgot to eat my turkey bacon with my breakfast, so I had it much later with HB egg and 1 piece of the allowed string cheese...did I mess up, already??
What if I have the need to have a snack in a hour or so, if I'm hungry and then after dinner...did I use my alloment up?
I'm thinking pastashcios and for after dinner No Sugar added fudge pop.
I am a work in progress with this, so please excuse my ignorance.
Thanks for any input you can give me.

murphmitch 02-15-2009 05:03 PM

I'd eat when I'm hungry as long as it is Phase I approved.

Ruthxxx 02-15-2009 05:08 PM

L.J. - go right ahead and ask questions. You probably weren't very good at sex the first time, either. (Slaps self on hand for inappropriate comment!)
If you are hungry, eat! Milk is a good choice too.

kimkateray 02-15-2009 05:18 PM

I'm starting tomorrow so I will probably have lots of questions then. I would love it if someone would share their success stories or point me to a thread that shows those. I saw some things on the internet from negative people who started South Beach and then said it didn't work and gave up. I love that it seems healthy. I was going to try Atkins but I think it is a little too limited for me. I was last on this site in 2001 so I am due for a change. The thing that will keep me going is I am never going to have a fat embarrassing summer again!!!

I do have a question about beans and protein shakes. I can't figure out if pinto beans are allowed on phase one. I need my chili.

Thanks Kimkate

kimkateray 02-15-2009 05:41 PM

Okay I answered my own question about the beans. I guess I had an old list. I have a new question about ketchup. Is there any sugar free varieties out there or a good substitute?

LindaBC 02-15-2009 06:02 PM

Hi. I've been here before too. Actually, I'm skipping Phase 1 due to my Diabetes and problems with low blood glucose, but I'm going to be VERY cautiously starting Phase 2 tomorrow.
Looking at the GI list, it seems as if canned legumes (pinto beans, kidney beans, etc) are higher in GI than the ones you cook yourself from dry, or am I getting confused again?
I'm not an egg hater but they are not my favourite food so I'm happy to see some alternative breakfasts in the recipe section. Check out the waffles and pancakes and the muffins. That's more like it. Yes, they are mostly eggs, but I can fool myself that they are something else.

dreaminstacy67 02-15-2009 11:18 PM

hello again... 2moro is the big day and im really excited about it!... okay... as for eating inbetween meals, ive done this way of life b4 and i just ate what was allowed in ph1... sugar free ketchup? yep, its out there... dont know where youre from but i found it at fortinoes... there was other sf stuff there too....went to the store today and got some things to start me off.. 1% milk ect... i tried the atkins... didnt go well with me.. lost weight, but my legs ached so much because of the lack of milk i had to quit. then found the beach and i was hooked. its easy to follow. i bought the book, and have read it over and over. i know what to do, just couldnt bring myself to get started.... so here we are 2 years later and alot fatter lol.... but this time im trying to keep a sense of humour about it all... the weight will come off, just have to try. and i cant remember who wrote about the cardio and not losing weight.. yeah someone answered you, but shes right. you work out and dont supply your body with enough, it will go into maintain mode so to speak. it will think that its starving and hold on to what ever it can. so watch what your doin hun. and eat. i put on a step counter when i wake up and i walk around the house. or i step in place. i look like an idiot but its movement. even while im cooking or doing dishes, im stepping. my 18 month old does it too, its hilarious!! (her name is savannah, savvy for short) once the warmer weather gets here (who knows when that will be) i will be goin out for walks along with my steps in the house. well im gonna head off to bed. looking forward to 2moro. remember to think positive, even when the scale says you've gained, stay positive. im my own worst enemy when it comes to this, so im just preparing myself lol... take care ya'll... until 2moro.. stacy xx :carrot:

L.J. 02-16-2009 06:41 AM

Ruthxxx, just to let you know I took your advise and finished my day with the remainder of my milk quota with SF Choc Syrup...great idea, thanks. I felt very satisfied with it.....
You have a point on the 'comment' Never thought of it that way:D

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions....:)

L.J. 02-16-2009 06:44 AM

Kimkate...I didn't realize about the beans either, until I printed Ruthxxx's list.
A mix of the a few different beans would make a great soup as well.
I don't like spicy so I wouldn't know how to make chili without chili bean (aren't they spicy) How do you make yours?
Good luck today. I got through my 1st day without any problem and felt completly satisified, in my hunger and choices.

CyndiM 02-16-2009 08:20 AM

Watch out for canned chili beans, they often have sugar in them. Once you start eating beans regularly you may find that dried are the cheapest and easiest way to know what's in them. I eat crockpot refried pinto beans most mornings with my breakfast. I'm hypoglycemic and the beans really help keep me going.

I can get sugar free ketchup at my co-op so there must be a few varieties out there :)

Kim - My doctor loves SBD and considers it very healthy. I often find people who think it is unhealthy don't actually know what it is or confuse it with their perception of Atkins. The name and products probably don't help that perception either. Quite a few people have expressed surprise when I told them what plan I use because they know I'm vegetarian and tend to eat natural, whole foods. That just shows me how much misinformation is out there.

and Ruth, I am so not commenting ;)

Ruthxxx 02-16-2009 08:36 AM

 at Cyndi who is probably biting her tongue really hard.

If you buy a pound of dried beans and cook them, you have the equivalent of three 19 oz cans of canned beans! I do them in big lots and freeze for later use. I haven't had time to think out why canned beans are higher GI, LindaBC but I'm sure there's not much difference - they are legumes and we need them.

Stacy, on Phase I, it's best not to focus too much on exercise until your body adjusts. Of course, keep it up if you are already doing it!

Everyone: be sure you have your dairy, legumes and 4½ cups of veggies daily. Please make it good veggies, not just lettuce!

Here's a thread about weightloss on Phase I. Please remember that Dr A's 8-13 pounds was there to help sell the book. Your own loss will vary depending on how much you have to lose and whether or not you have been dieting before. RMV - results may vary!

dreaminstacy67 02-16-2009 09:41 AM

i dont like beans... not any way shape or form, so this is one thing i struggle with. i read somewhere in one of the other beach forums, to rinse your beans if youre using the can kind. it gets rid of that juice and apparently thats where alot of the gases are. i put my beans in my little bullet and mince them to a pulp then add them to my chili. its the only way i can get them in me. as for the vegies.. ugh.. im not a huge fan, hence why im over weight, so again i pulp them and add them to the chili. no one even knows they are there lol. with my steps, i am not trying to run a marathon lol, just trying to keep active so that when i do need to start excercizing i will be ready. i make a great brocolli salad that i made into sb freindly. brocolli, vinegar, mayo, splenda, some crumbled bacon. mix the liquid and pour over brocolli and bacon. its good lol. some people add onions and sesame seeds. its an easy way to geet some vegies in me. i also drink a cup of the low sodium v-8. i of course add some "no-salt" because it really needs it lol. cabbage soup is also very good. i experiment alot because i get bored. so once i remember all my old tricks i will post them for ya'll. have a good day, talk later tonight. stacy x

TwilightMom 02-16-2009 10:00 AM

Today is my official 2 week weigh in and I'm down to 235.2! Yay! I met two goals in one week (hitting 239 and then hitting 235)! I'm so excited! This means I've lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks and after the first initial sugar cravings, it's been pretty easy!

mythreesons 02-16-2009 10:09 AM

Hi everyone! I am starting (well restarting today). I did the SBD about 5 years ago with great success. Then, I had 3 children and gained all of the weight back and then some (I went under the philosophy of I'm pregnant and I can eat what I want.:o) I have tried to restart the SBD several times in the past few months but I always had some excuse. Well, I have now joined a weight loss group and DH is doing the SBD with me, so I am confident that I will be able to stick with this way of eating.

I look forward to chatting with everyone on here!

CyndiM 02-16-2009 10:10 AM

Stacy - With the beans how about hummus and bean dips? You can season them with anything you like. If all else fails absolutely try the chick pea crunchies. I don't think I've ever met anyone that didn't like those. I made them for a party so I would have munchies and everyone else ate them all!
ETA - White beans are especially mild tasting and yummy with garlic, Parmesan cheese & basil.

For veggies it sounds like you've got an approach that will work. I like to hide things in spaghetti sauce too. I never ate eggplant before starting SBD and discovered I could hide it in sauce. Now I add it to everything because it just disintegrates into whatever you make. Shredded, steamed cabbage is good under saucy foods and really has no significant flavor of its own. I often use that where I used to use noodles.

You can do it!

murphmitch 02-16-2009 10:25 AM

Stacy, make sure the bacon is turkey bacon or Canadian bacon. I have Heinz One Carb ketchup that has no added sugar.

dreaminstacy67 02-16-2009 01:04 PM

:D by "canadian bacon" ya'll mean peameal bacon right? ive had this dicussion b4 and never got a real answer lol.... im canadian, so we dont call it canadian lol.. its pink with yellow corn meal around the edges, and we call it peameal. and yes i do use the turkey or even the chicken bacon, although bacon bacon tastes better lol....

Ruthxxx 02-16-2009 01:13 PM

That's right, Stacy. Up here it's made from the pork loin and is then sliced. In the States it seems to be rolled into a round sometimes - Hormel?

wannabesmaller 02-16-2009 01:42 PM

I'm starting AGAIN today as well. I was doing well on SB before we went to Cancun for the week...well needless to say "All Inclusive" is just too tempting. Gained 12 pounds and so far lost 6 of it...back on Phase One today!

Chelby29 02-16-2009 02:52 PM

Stacy -- My 'canadian' bacon doesn't have cornmeal. But, you're right, it isn't as good as bacon bacon. :) Cornmeal... sign. I miss cornbread more than anything with this WOE.

Wannabe -- If 'inclusive' involved margaritas, I'd be in trouble! Welcome back from the beach, to the beach. :D

TwilightMom 02-16-2009 04:45 PM

Why did the other thread get closed?

dreaminstacy67 02-16-2009 04:53 PM

twilight.... i dont know, i went to post and it said closed. which makes no sense to me cuz im the one who opened it lolo.... i guess this our new meetin spot lol.. talk soon... stacy x

TwilightMom 02-16-2009 04:55 PM

I know! The other one was only 2 weeks old. Oh, well. I'm in PH 1.5 this week, so I'll probably be moving on to find a Ph2 thread next week. Regardless, I love this site and the support I get here!

dreaminstacy67 02-16-2009 05:00 PM

oh i thought you were talking about the thread that i opened... it was closed too and it was only a few hours old!! lol... i just started today so i'll see ya in a few weeks over there-> lol

My canadian bacon is made with soy and wheat so what do I know? ;)

Ruthxxx 02-16-2009 05:11 PM

I close the Phase I thread periodically when it gets too long or there are lots of people moving into Phase II. When it hasn't had entries for a couple of days I close it and start a new one as it's usually off the page. Please note that I did include a link to it in my opening post in this thread and a reference to this thread in my closing post on the old one.

Besides it gives me a real sense of power!

Chelby29 02-16-2009 05:20 PM

Ruth, you crack me up!

Cyndi, Soy bacon doesn't really sound good, but neither does tofu or tofurkey. In fact, tofurkey sounds like a disease. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Jones. Your son has tofurkey." :) I need a real vegetarian to cook for me. No doubt I'm doing it wrong!

TwilightMom 02-16-2009 07:34 PM

Ruth has the power! :carrot:

Thanks for the congrats! I'm afraid to step to Ph2. I think I'll hang on Ph1 for a few more days.

I tried the cinnamon omlette thing - GROSS! I must have made it wrong. It was like cardboard. I still can't get the taste off my tongue.

*sigh* I'm still waiting for my ticker time to come up, too. Waiting, waiting, waiting. Waiting for the pounds to melt, waiting for my ticker, waiting to g to Ph2, waiting to buy the book (rather than check it out of the library for the upteenth time) because that would mean I HAVE to move to Ph2.

Are most people afraid?

swandive81 02-16-2009 07:41 PM

Twilight- The cinammon omelet is one of my favorite recipes I've found posted, but I will say that the first few times I tried it, it left a really bad aftertaste in my mouth... I tried cutting the splenda a bit, and it is much better, and still plenty sweet.

As for the transition to phase 2, you can do it!!! As I am sure you'll here from everyone else here, go slow and be patient... add phase 2 foods one at a time, and pay attention to how you react to them. Best of luck :)

mythreesons 02-16-2009 07:51 PM

hi everyone! I completed my first day of P1 (something I haven't been able to do in a while)

Cinnamon Omelette. . .ummm. . .not to sure about that one.

Twilight. . .I remember when I was on the SBD 5 years ago, I was scared to transiiton to P2 but as long as you take it slow, you will be fine. GOOD LUCK!

I read the book but I obviously am lost Milk?? I know it is in the new book but I thought still to be careful I eat cheese...And beans everyday arent they high in carbs i know they have lots of fiber...confused help I can add beans i like black beans in my salad at lunch so tell me what kind and how much I can use daily...

murphmitch 02-16-2009 11:34 PM

Bekabu, you can have beans. We don't count carbs. SB is a healthy carb, not a low carb diet. I eat beans every day. Sometimes more than one serving a day. You can have any kind of beans. Check the list Ruth made in the SB FAQ's. Start with 1/2 cup serving. You can also have 2 servings of dairy a day. If you print the Phase I & Phase II lists out to refer to, it makes things much easier. I used them way more than the stuff in the book. :)

South Beach isn't really a "low carb" plan. You can definitely have beans. I eat them almost every day.Personally, I don't limit beans at all. I eat mostly black beans but there are many options. The allowed beans are on page 178 of the "Supercharged" book. It says to start with 1/3 to 1/2 cup as a serving.

SB allows 2 cups of dairy per day, and cheese is counted as a protein, not in the dairy allowance. Once you are in phase 2 you can have up to 3 cups per day of dairy.

dreaminstacy67 02-17-2009 08:19 AM
