Default Eggs - evil or good?

I am nearing the end of Phase 1 and have been enjoying having 2 eggs for breakfast every day. I am concerned, though, if having 2 eggs every day is good for my cholesterol. I am on medication for high cholesterol and it is now at a really good level (low-actually). I don't want to screw that up.

So, for those of you who have been doing this awhile....how bad is having 2 eggs for breakfast every day...really?

Patty

You can have egg substitute - in fact, on SBD the use of eggs is not limited unless directed by your doctor. Being that you're on HC medicine, I would probably switch to either using all egg whites, combining one whole egg with two whites or an egg substitute (egg-beaters)....although eggs really aren't much to worry about in the grand scheme of things.

I have ONE egg every morning for breakfast (and on the weekends I add whites)

I cut back to ONE egg (and no other protein) after I added oatmeal fruit and milk to my breakfast)

I'm not doing SB but I eat 2 eggs almost every day. Been doing that since January of this year and, without medication, my cholesterol has dropped from 244 to 170. I would make sure to keep getting checked regularly just to be sure but, if they fit into your plan, enjoy your eggs

From what I've heard, eggs don't affect the overall ratio (which is most important) of your cholestrol. This may be incorrect so just ask your doctor.

Lightbulb Thanks JerseryGirl

Thanks for doing the legwork for us.

I always love your contribution to any topic.

I love my eggs, eat them almost every morning and I have yet to have a cholesterol problem.

since you are on HC meds though I would check with your doctor. My understanding is that egg industry has heard this and actually bred it into the chickens to have a lower cholesterol egg. Now, this is what I heard but I can't remember where I read it.

I did read in the book You On a Diet that eating organic eggs actually also have the omega-3 acids that are found in fish! I thought that was interesting!

Also, remember the old rule ( I read that in a whole heath type article): Go backwards from four legs to two legs to no legs when choosing your source of protein. I would definitely count eggs as a no leg variety of protein, wouldn't you??

Newer studies have shown, as JG linked, that dietary cholesterol has much less of an impact on serum cholesterol than was previously thought. I personally eat 2 or 3 eggs a day and have no problems.

I'm not on SBD, but here's my take.

Mother Earth News did a study comparing true free roaming chicken eggs vs. conventional eggs. The eggs coming from the free roaming chickens had less cholesterol and less saturated fat then the conventional eggs. Plus, they had good levels of Omega-3s. Now I'm talking chicken eggs that come from a farmer who lets them roam and forage (as in eating bugs and grass along with feed.) So if you can find a source of eggs from a local farmer (try the farmer's market) then eat those and don't worry about it.

I've seen the same study Photo chick has that shows that dietary cholesterol isn't the issue they thought. Also, I know this is anecdotal, but my father ate eggs with bacon every morning and it didn't effect his cholesterol.

I just saw a Danish study that showed that full fat cheese doesn't raise cholesterol levels either. Very interesting.

I'd ask your doctor. As I understand it, cholesterol isn't what raises your cholesterol level -- saturated fat does. If you eat more cholesterol, your body makes less, but if you eat more saturated fat, it just circulates around in your bloodstream.

To be sure, I guess I'd stick to 3 eggs a week (which is generally considered okay) and use egg beaters for the rest.
