Hump Day Chat

Got up really early just so I could beat Cottage in starting the Daily!

It was very strange around here yesterday - Disney doesn't bark as much without Hershey around. She prefers duets, I guess. I had a meeting in the morning but we did get out for a walk down to the Library where she made a new furry friend - a darling pug! We have a play date!

This morning I have a periodontist appointment in Kingston at nine and will need to leave before eight to beat the rush-hour traffic. Why do they call it rush hour when the traffic is so slow? I hope to be home by noon to grab a quick lunch and head off to pet therapy.

Thanks to all who sent me PMs about Hershey. It really did help.

Hump it, Beachies! Let's not waste a precious day. :cofdate:

femmecreole 09-24-2008 05:22 AM

Morning Ruth! A dentist apt. does not sound like a fun way to start the day. Hope you and Disney have a great time at therapy! I was thinking about you yesterday when we were reading a story at school about "dogs that work". Hmm, with all these puppies around here, I wish some of mine would get a job! My son left the door to this sun porch/den room open last night and the puppies got to explore my living room last night while we were sleeping and leave little presents all over my oriental rugs. No doggies allowed in there, but I guess they were too little to read the signs! The babies spend the morning in a play pen when I leave for work and my husband takes them out when he gets home, so at least no surprises when he gets home. I wish they would stay in there at night without yipping.

Nothing on my plate today except for work and leftovers. A charmed life indeed. ...snore.

I saw a new commercial here for V-8 vegetable soups last night and googled it and found the site. Looks like they would be ok alone and pretty good used in recipes. They have some recipes on the site that look pretty good. Except for the corn one, they look pretty SB compliant. The meat loaf recipe looks really great.

ladybugnessa 09-24-2008 05:34 AM

i'm glad disney made a friend... good luck at the periodontist. ugh

hi Cat!

me: weight watchers weigh in, putting a new battery in my scale, working, nothing much.

CyndiM 09-24-2008 05:47 AM

Ugh where's the coffee. Woke up earlier than I wanted and started thinking about all I could do with that extra hour. lovely. Don't know how the people who don't drink coffee get up in the morning ;)

Ruth -I hate the periodontist! Hope your appointment is a quick and easy one. How nice for Disney to have a new friend :)

Cat - All the pictures give me puppy envy but the stories are good reminders ;) Hope your leftovers are yummy and the work day is fun.

Nessa - Have a good day

Today is a half fun day at work. It's our regular equinox celebration so we are heading up the mountain to look for hawks (can you tell I helped plan these things?!) I've got a program visit this morning so all in all a good day.

*added - My best friend may have pancreatitis. I'm going to make a pot of garlic broth for her when I get home. Liquid diets are no fun :(

Have a good day all

cottagebythesea 09-24-2008 06:10 AM

:coffee: I'm glad you beat me to it, Ruth. I'm feeling just awful this morning, and even slept in a few more minutes. I could stay in bed for a while, but then the morning would be wasted. Hopefully some coffee will set me right, although tea would probably be better. My throat is so raw that I can barely swallow.

So far it's looking to be a somewhat easy day. I'll head over to meet Maggie's bus at noon, and the girls have gymnastics after school, which gives me an hour for myself. :) Then home. I think I'll make a nice soothing soup in the crockpot for tonight's supper.

Cat, did you wake your son to clean up the mess? I sure would have!

Nessa, how are you doing, these days? I thinking about your ankle, and hope it's not giving you too much pain.

Cyndi, it sounds like a fun day for you. I hope you have nice weather for the hike!

Loriann7 09-24-2008 07:19 AM

 ruth, Enjoy making new furry friends for Disney! I was so proud of Jade, there's a dog she hasn't gotten to meet because owners say he's not friendly to other dogs, last few times I was able to walk her by the house with not even a growl, yip, only a little hair on end because he was barking loudly at her, but she remained calm and kept walking with me! I was so proud!

Femme, You WILL miss them when they all are replaced into their forever homes!

 Nessa!

Cyndi, sorry about your friend! Give her a hug for me!

Cottage, Hope it passes! I woke up about six feeling nauseated myself!

Me, paperwork that didn't get done yesterday, researching a company I have interview with tomorrow, meet sis after she gets out of work so I can pick up that puppy/baby gate! I think today I WILL make that mexican lasagna I ahve all ingredients for.

Kitty, last two nights, has decided her bed was on my shoulder. I sleep on my side and she gets up on my arm, the highest part of my body, and claims it as her bed! I'm sore from sleeping on one arm all night! She is such a doll! I have the bedroom door open and she's out exploring since the big bad doggie is outside. Actually Jade isn't that bad, when I tell her to sit, she does, she leaves kitty alone for the most part, except when kitty gets scared and runs from her, then the Prey comes into play and the chase is on! I'm hoping sooner or later kitty will claw puppy and puppy will understand kitty IS alpha! LOL

ETA: the sharp pains are back with fury.

femmecreole 09-24-2008 07:22 AM

Cottage, if I woke him up everytime he did something "careless" he'd never sleep! He's one of those really brilliant professor types. Terribly smart, but doesn't really think about "common stuff". At 21,He will still put plates down on the edge of the counter etc. He is going to law school next year, can carry on a conversation about anything to anyone, but won't think to close a door and doesn't even notice the disaster that is his room. But, he's a great kid and other than doing careless stuff has NEVER given me a minutes worry. My other son is so detail oriented it's unreal..He notices EVERYTHING and is such a neat freak! (gee, where does he get THAT from?)

For the sore throat. I had one a few weeks ago and got some of those "melt on your tongue" strips and they worked pretty well for a little while..enough to take the big pain edge off.

Lori, looks like I won't miss them at all. I think these 3 are staying unless someone comes along who is "good enough" to take one. We are nuts.

TwynnB 09-24-2008 07:40 AM

Good morning all!

I figured I'd drop a line....today is of course, routine. I may be taking an interviewee out to see the sites (I LOVE where I live!!) after working this morning. I'm flying out tomorrow morning at 6 am (po-dunk airport,so only a 15 minute drive with no waiting in line!!), so I'll won't be around much til next week. Flying to FL for a conference...bring on the coffee!!

Have a great day!

Schmoodle 09-24-2008 08:00 AM

Good morning chicks,
I woke up with a lovely itchy rash all over my arms this morning. Very red so I must have been scratching all night. It started last night but I thought it was just a bug bite. Very strange, the only thing I did yesterday that I don't do every other day was to take my book out in the yard to read for a while in the evening. Oh, and I picked a big bucket of the last of the grape tomatoes. I think I'll try to dry them, I'll never eat them all.
Still no word from DH, about 3.5 weeks now. Oh well, no news is good news, I always say. I'm sure if Russia had taken an American merchant ship, we'd have heard about it!
Nothing too exciting here today, Parks and Recreation Committee meeting tonight, and I think I'll make a quiche with some leftover fish and crab and shrimp for dinner.
Have a great day to all. If I'm going to get a shower, I need to jump in now before I have to take DD to school.

Do you happen to have my DH's long lost brother?

They sound identical.

What law school is he going to?

Schmoo- I don't know how you do it. You're a stronger woman than I am.

--

nothing new today. same ol' same ol'. DH starts his new job at another high school doing dual enrollment stuff. This time it is Cecelia High, for all of my LA girls. I have to start planning DH's 30th birthday party - it's next week! He wants to go golfing and then have a bbq...should be easy enough.

KO 09-24-2008 08:45 AM

bbl!

ladybugnessa 09-24-2008 08:46 AM

cottage, feel better sweetie.

Schmoodle.. get some cortizone cream for your rash....

beachgal 09-24-2008 08:48 AM

 No fair starting an early post war, Ruth...I'll never win! :tired: I'm so glad you and Disney are forging your own path. Oh, a darling pug! After looking at H's pictures, I can't wait to meet one in person! Hope you both enjoy the playdate! Have fun at your appointment.

Yikes about the oriental rugs, Cat! :fr: I saw a whole line of hilarious books about how babies should work for their keep (things like "Teach your baby how to repair cars" and "Teach your baby to mix drinks"). Maybe they should make some for puppies? ;)

 Nessa

Have fun on the fun day, Cyndi! I'm hoping, since you designed it, that you'll enjoy it! Sorry about your friend. Hope she's better soon!

Wow, Cottage, my throat has been hurting since this weekend, but today it seems to feel better. Hope you feel better soon, too! Do you have any of that "throat coat" tea? Works wonders when you can't have sugar.

Glad kitty is settling in so well, Loriann! Does she have a name?

Twynn, are you starting to get color yet? I'm just north of you, and we have big patches of color all over. Enjoy your drive!

Yikes, Schmoodle! I get really bad reactions to mosquitos and nothing ever helped until my doc tried Claritin. It works wonders for itching! Hope you feel better. A book in the backyard sounds heavenly, but it's a shame it resulted in a rash!

Me: Not much to report. Work, gym, then the usual rush around at home before heading to my food and mood support group. looks like a student just walked in...gotta go!

Pacergal29 09-24-2008 09:05 AM

Chatty group this morning, I'll never get through personals. Crazy phone won't stop ringing this morning, don't these people know I really need my Coffee, and 3FC fix in the morning?

Tried changing up my exercise this morning with an on demand yoga/cardio workout and though not much different than my usual yoga I was sweating buckets and I feel it in my legs. Feel the burn!

Aw crud I have a broken nail! Totally random I know, just keeping you all on your toes! :D To think I wonder why I have so much trouble with the meditation part of yoga! :dizzy:

Alright I must focus on my day now! Have a great one ladies and I will be back later rest assured for more random thoughts.

ladybugnessa 09-24-2008 09:10 AM

pacer did you meditate on the broken nail?

are your nails natural or acrylic? i have acrylic and when i break a nail it's so obvious....

Pacergal29 09-24-2008 09:23 AM

They are natural which makes it so much more heartbreaking. My day is just going to heck now! :D

hmacneil6 09-24-2008 09:24 AM

Good morning all!!! Happy hump day!

Ruth - Glad to hear that Hershey found a friend. Good luck at the dentist!

Cat - Hope the puppy incident wasn't too big of a mess. I think your son and my dh are also related. Very intelligent man, my husband, but he's prone to forgetting things....like keys in a car and ATM cards in the ATM. But I love him!!!

Cottage - Feel better, sweetie! Be sure to drink lots of liquid, even if it hurts!!!

Nessa - Good luck at the weigh in tonight. I'm sure your number will be great!!!

Cyndi - Enjoy your day, sounds splendid!

Loriann - Your kitty stories are fun. I'm sure Honey and Jade will start to figure out co-habitation soon.

Twynnb - Have fun with your trainees today!!! Enjoy your time in FL.

Schmoodle - Saying prayers for your dh's safety. Hope the rash goes away soon.

Zeff - LOVE planning parties! Hope you're able to get some fun stuff in for dh's 30th!

KO - Black bean soup on a cold morning I'm sure is really yummy.

Laurie - Enjoy your meeting tonight!

Stephanie - I also did a new routine this morning......isn't it amazing how a few changes can really make a big difference!!! Hope the nail isn't too bad.

Me - Biggest Looser was good last night. That week 2 is tough! Had yummy sloppy joes so I was in a very comfy mood last night. Today at work I have to drive out for a meeting that's an hour a way. I'll be off campus most of the day. It'll be a nice break. Not much going on tonight. I'll probably make some phone calls to figure out what we're doing this weekend. Hoping to get together with some friends.
Have a great Wednesday, ladies!!! Can you believe we're already half way through the week!!!
ENJOY!!!!!

cottagebythesea 09-24-2008 09:27 AM

Twynne, I hope you have a nice trip to Florida and don't fly into the Nor'Easter that's headed our way!

Schmoodle, sorry to hear about your rash. Since you were picking tomatoes, I wonder if you are allergic to the leaves? I know I always get an itchy rash from tomato plants. I hope it clears up soon!

Good morning, Zeff! Any exciting plans for today?

 Laurie! I know! It seems several of us are complaining of sore throats since the weekend. Maybe I can't blame it on my girlies afterall! I'm drinking jasmine green tea and chamomile tea. It's helping some. I just went to the store for some of those new Herbal Sucrets, too. You're lucky to have only gained from water and muscle weight after all the Food Porn we enjoyed! I'm not even going near a scale!

KO, I just made a crockpot full of Turkey Pumpkin Soup. I think it will hit the spot tonight!

Stephanie, you just reminded me that I want to look into yoga classes. I sure don't know when I'm going to find time to attend a class, though, with my crazy schedule. A broken nail! I hate when that happens!

ha Heather, I was just thinking how SLOW this week is going.

zeffryn 09-24-2008 09:34 AM

Heather, I love party planning as well. I really have to start concentrating on how on earth I'm going to make the cake that I have planned in my head. I got DH hooked on Biggest Loser last night - he whined at first, but I told him with everything that he monopolizes the television with...that I should be allowed just one reality show per season. He shut up and was pretending to read a book....but sure made a lot of comments for "not paying attention". ;)

Cottage, it depends on what you would call exciting. I have a load of laundry going and another just coming out of the dryer...I know, huh? Living the fast life. I do have to go to Target to pick up a birthday gift for a 4 year old at some point today...Also, Big Lots has some cute fall and halloween decor, so I'm going to swing by.

--

I asked this the other day. I'm looking for a good family movie for our movie night this week. It doesn't have to be animated or new, but it has to entertain a 2 and 4 year old - plus a 35 year old man who refuses to watch "kids movies" ;) Anybody have any ideas?

Pacergal29 09-24-2008 09:40 AM

Nessa depends on how bad the break is, as luck would have it this one isn't to bad and won't require chopping them all off and starting fresh. I have really strong nails and always have, I get alot of compliments on them.

Cottage yoga is my absolute favorite, I would never be able to take a class as our local gym offers them at such strange hours that just don't work with my work schedule. Thank goodness for on demand and Inhale on the Oxygen network!

ETA: Zeff Have you seen Robots? I think it is a cute movie with enough humor to keep adults happy and excitment for the wee ones.

Have you seen "Milo & Otis"? It's a great adventure story between a dog and a cat. Another one we enjoy is "Balto".

zeffryn 09-24-2008 10:01 AM

RE: movies.

We just watched Milo and Otis a few weeks ago. I love that movie.
I'll look into Balto - DH suggested All Dogs Go To Heaven
Robots might be a possibility as well - DS loves his Robots book.

ladybugnessa 09-24-2008 10:06 AM

oy small kids.. big men... Cars? Rattatoulli?

old movies? chitty chitty bang bang?

Jenskihere 09-24-2008 10:29 AM

I LOVE Meet The Robinsons. I even cried at the end! :-)

My kids love Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (The old version, not the new freaky version!!), The Cat in the Hat (with Mike Meyers - even has adult comedy in it, over the kids heads), any of the Shrek movies, Toy Story, Madagascar and the one I highly recommend for this situation - Night at the Museum.
We watch a lot of movies, can you tell?
Probably helpful to post that my kids are 3 and 6, so not too far off your target ages.

Jenny

Schmoodle 09-24-2008 10:44 AM

One of DS's favorites when he was small was The Iron Giant. We all enjoyed it, even DH, it's really good. We also loved All Dogs Go To Heaven. Robots is good.

Jenskihere 09-24-2008 10:47 AM

My son loves the Iron Giant too!! We took it out at the library this summer.

So I had a reality check this week that has had me bummed since. Monday night I went for a bike ride with my 6 yr old son. He wasn't in a baby seat on the back of the bike... he wasn't on his big wheel... he wasn't in the stroller.... he was riding his bike next to me, and I was working hard to keep up with him (his energy is CRAZY!!). That is when it hit me. He is old enough for us to go on bike rides together. Not a toddler/preschooler anymore. Yeah, I know he is 6, this has been happening for a while now... but the reality of just how old he really is, hit me on that bike ride! I'm such a sap! I know they say it goes fast... but I feel like it zipped right by! :-(
I'm getting old!! LOL :o

ladybugnessa 09-24-2008 10:49 AM

oh i love the old willy wonka... dh is creeped out by the ooompa loompas

what about mary popins?

We love the Iron Giant too...and I think we might have it. DH loves it.

Thanks!!

Pacergal29 09-24-2008 12:24 PM

awww I'm trying to eat lunch here! :D

Fat Melanie 09-24-2008 12:41 PM

I should start getting up earlier so it's easier to keep up with the personals. I'm so lazy!

Ruthxxx, how are you doing? I'm glad to see Disney made a new friend.

CyndiM, sorry about your friend. But garlic broth sounds good!

Loriann, are you going to go back to the doctor??

Femmecreole, your son sounds hot. The whole smart thing, and all. Too bad I'm not single and I live in NC!

Schmoodle, often my friend's mom doesn't hear from her son weeks at a time as a well. I gather your husband is in the marines, navy or? Through my friend's mom, I see how hard it can be. You are strong! I hope you hear from him soon.

Cottagebythesea, what is that turkey pumpkin soup??! That sounds original. I've been craving pumpkin lately... is there any way you would share the recipe? *puppydog eyes* :p

Zeffryn, I'm a Big Lots Princess. I love how I can find quality stuff for cheap. There are a good place to buy Xmas presents as well, I just pull off the big lot stickers if the item happens to have one. And they've got good $5 candles. They may not be Yankee candles (if anyone likes them, I love them) but they're pretty decent. Family movies: Well we watched The Water Horse not too long ago which was good yet predictable and I saw the beginnings of Nanny McPhee ... it was pretty good thus far, those kids are terrible and hilariously bad.

I'm not trying to leave anyone out, just trying to get through personals quickly 'cause I'm a lazy girl :D Hi everyone.

Baby boy is angry that he has to sleep in what BF calls a baby jail now. A crib! We got the fisher price Rainforest set from my great-aunt when I was still pregnant and I was excited to wash it so we could use it. Well, let's just say it was a pain in the :censored:. First, the ruffle thing confused me. I was like, where in the world does this thing go? On the springboard or on top of the mattress and then the sheet? BF said obviously the ruffle was made for older cribs and it couldn't be used, but that doesn't make sense because fisher price has made rainforest stuff pretty recently. I think BF just didn't know how to do it and didn't feel like taking the time to figure it out. So we discarded the ruffle.

We got the mattress sheet on, and then it was time for the bumper. I didn't want to use the bumper because of the associated SIDS risk, but BF said he was old enough that it wasn't a concern... but to my knowledge, the sids risk is from 0 months to 1 year, with the most crucial time between 2-6 months. While DS is older than 6 months, I still didn't want to take any chances. However, the nurse at the health department said it was fine. I still wasn't sure... but we tried to put the bumper up. That thing was impossible... simply impossible. When we tied it to all four posts, there was parts on the inside that didn't fit perfectly against the inside of the crib and no amount of adjusting fixed it. I took it off in frustration and threw it to the side. I wasn't comfortable using it to begin with, no matter how adorable the rainforest frogs and giraffes were. So, the only thing from that $100 set that DS is using is the mattress sheet. The bumper and ruffle are crumped in a heap on the floor. The blanket that goes with the set is here in the living room, used for his tummy time

He was crying and he hated it, even though he could stretch out now. (Yes he's a little late getting into a crib, but the bassinet was pretty big and roomy). I put him in a long sleeved, long legged green Old Navy baby thingy. (who knows, they all have different names. Jumpers. Onesies. Etc. Anyway, it was comfy!) We held him in the bed for a little bit and his daddy made him laugh. I told him not to get him so worked up before bed but it was still quite cute. Finally we put him in the jailcell and he kept twisting his body to look at me through the rungs. Finally he went to sleep though. His deafening cries from earlier had stopped.

We'll see what sort of fight we're up against tonight, however. He knows now that we'll take him out of it and give him attention, and my grandma said he'll learn to manipulate us that way. We'll see! I have no qualms about taking a crying baby out of the crib to comfort him. It works for me! And he knows he's loved.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice regarding the bumper and ruffle, let me know. It was a pain.

zeffryn 09-24-2008 12:49 PM

mel - the ruffle goes under the mattress. Your thought that BF didn't know how to use it was probably right ;). Also, if your DS can roll over by himself...he is pretty much out of the high risk category for SIDS.

That being said....bumpers are nice....for looks. We had a breathable bumper, not quite as cute but kept his little feet inside the crib. They should also have ties that tie in the middle slats as well as to the four corners....yours didn't?

As for taking the baby out of the crib every time he cries....you are setting yourself up to get burned, dear. He is going to need to put himself to sleep by himself eventually....you do NOT want to end up with a two year old who can't go to sleep by himself. A friend's child has to be rocked to sleep every night and it can take hours. You are not mistreating him by leaving him in the crib to cry himself to sleep...he is old enough to do so. You would be teaching him independence..a vital skill for toddler-hood. If you absolutely must calm him - don't take him out of the crib, go into his room, pat his back until he calms down and keep telling him that it is time to sleep...it might take a bit, but he'll learn to calm down on his own and won't learn that if he cries hard enough - he don't have to go to sleep. Even 8 month old babies know how to manipulate and it won't get better as they get older if you set the precedent now.

I didn't think I was eating that much myself, till I started tracking it yesterday, I was floored at the amount of calories in my salads... good thing it's all I eat from noon till dinner! :)

You may want to start tracking your cals, you'd be surprised how quickly they add up!

I have to admit that counting points (same as tracking calories) was a HUGE eye opener for me. OMG i was eating a ton...

i mean 1 oz of feta on my salad is about 1/5 of what i was using... so figure 5 oz of feta on top of 6 oz of protein and then add 4-6 tablespoons of full fat dressing... oh **** yes it adds up...

Mel as a young mother who had no clue what she was doing I made a HUGE disaster with my first born of bedtime routines. When my second was born I regreted it to no end. It took weeks of sitting by his bed, at the end of his bed, at the door and then outside the door before that child would goto sleep at night. Trust me when I say you don't want to start bad habits. In the long run it will be much more painless for both of you to get it right now. The hardest thing about being a parent is knowing when your love for them is actually hurting them, and it doesn't get any easier the older they get. :D
